Detailed Reviews
I had bed and breakfast. Room was a nice size with a nice sea view balcony, although not good for someone who is scared of heights! Good size bathroom, room was cleaned every day and I was even provided with a toothbrush, shower gel, shampoo etc. Breakfast was a good spread, with a spread of cooked and cold food so you have either a fry up or continental option or both. Swimming pool was clean, a good size and had a nice sunbathing area. The hotel is in a good location with shops and restaurants near by. The walk to Funchal is about 20 minutes but is a bit hilly so if you aren’t good at long walks etc this hotel is too far from the city but if you are willing to take a walk in to town then the location is fine. There are lots of tourist information points all around with options of booking trip. My only criticism with the hotel is that the room got very hot and the air conditioning didn’t work properly, it would come on spontaneously and would only stay at 20 degrees, when we turned it down to 16/17/18/19 it would go straight back up to 20 which was too warm. We reported this to reception 3 times but nothing was done, we were told it is a problem with the entire hotel, seemed like it was pre set to 20 to save money or something but was very frustrating as we had to have the balcony door open all night which allowed in light and noise and you couldn’t do this on a lower floor obviously, I would assume in the summer the rooms get way too hot. I would give the hotel a 5 star review if we didn’t have this problem with the air conditioning. This was a frustrating problem. Staff are friendly, all in all a nice hotel and incredible value for the price you pay. £136 for 4 nights B&B. Also a nice games room with ping pong.

Me, my husband and our 2 years old boy spent a week in this hotel. Although it has 4 stars, in reality it's very outdated. If you have a disability i would not reccomend this place as you don't have access to get even to the 1st elevator. The same for pushchairs if you don't have someone to help you. However,we checked in without any problems, the person from the reception gave us a kettle when we asked for one, we had a lovely sea view from the 11th floor and we had the pool mostly for ourselves. The water in the pool was always nice and clean. Our room was cleaned every day, we had breakfast included, could choose from different varieties, the coffee wasn't good but that wasn't a huge problem for us. The only problem we had was with laundry service, we didn't had a price list but we were advised to leave all the clothes in a bag on the bed so the cleaning lady can pick it up. We used this service twice to clean all our clothes, to find out later that they charge €3,40 only for a t-short. You have to insist to get a price list. They lost my husband's trousers so we ended up paying only one bill of €32. The big plus i want to mention here is the SPA they have here. There is a Venezuelan lady named Nancy that is doing slimming treatments and the best massage i have ever tried. I will be coming back in Funchal if only just for this massage. She is absolutely amazing, i had a sports deep massage twice and she managed to fix loads if my foot and back problems. I think the hotel doesn't advertise this service enough and this is something you will want to come back to. All in all, nice people around, we had a nice holiday here.

We were rather pleased with the hotel overall, not where near the best, but decent enough.
The room was spacious and have a nice little balcony. The room also had a lockable fridge, which was empty (not filled with items to buy) so you could keep your own drinks etc there.
Some negative feedback:
A little desing flaws, in the bathroom the drain is too high, meaning if water splashed from the bath on the floor, but water would not properly run down the drain, leaving the floor wet. The room didnt have enough places where to hang items, such as towels and clothes to dry.
The rooms can be rather nousy, which usually doesn't bother me, but our neighbours (or cleaner) did not know how to use the keycard, and every morning I would wake up to that annoying biiping of the lock.
About the cleaning, towels were often changed even if not left on the floor, which were the instructions if a change is not needed. Rarely would anyone complain about a clean towel, rather just to point out the environmental effort the hotel should be making (as they advertise). I would also suggest having a "no need to make the bed / change the sheets" sign to leave on the bed.
Most staff were very pleasant and welcoming, but a negative feedback from our check in. The receptionist felt rather distant and barely spoke to us. She asked for our ID's and then wanted my booking number (or something as such) from my reservation site. I have never been asked this, so there I'm scrolling through hundreds of emails trying to an email with a booking / reference number. This whole time she clearly had my reservation open on her screen. Eventually after I found the number, she asked to look at it, and comments "oh, it's in your language". I was very suprised about this and it felt very weird and unprofessional.
Checkout was the opposite, very fast and friendly (different receptionist).

Just returned from my first visit to the Raga. I had a seaview room No. 405. The views were excellent. The room was spacious, bed comfortable. The shower was over the bath and was always warm and powerful.
I was happy with the breakfast.
The hotel is in a great location, I prefer to stay in the Lido area and it's only approx 30 mins walk to the City. Or you can easily get a bus.
The staff was approachable and helpful and I would definitely stay at this hotel again

+1
When booking I asked for a double bed, when I arrived I had two singles and requested a double again. The solution to this request was to push the beds together and put a stretch sheet over them. The bathroom was small with a shower that pointed back to the wall and bath that would could only be described as a large basin. A strategically positioned door stop was placed in front of the toilet to guarantee that you would stub your toe at least once a day. The room was barely cleaned daily and at best the bed sheets were changed, towels weren’t replaced so by the end of my visit I had an impressive collection of bath towels draped over a chair. Basic amenities like tea and coffee are non existent so expect to go to the bar or restaurant to get one…if they’re open.
The restaurant provided a buffet style breakfast each morning of the same thing each day, accompanied by a wide variety of pigeons regularly walking the restaurant floor or casually hoping up on to a table (without a reservation) to finish of any left overs. Mix that with busy staff who bus an old trolley around collecting plates, recycling butter and barley wiping a table properly. Needless to say, I didn’t have dinner here.
The pool nice but in need of refurbishment as you can see patch fixes all over the place, the sun loungers we’re playfully uncooperative and wear made of a fabric that would give you friction burns if you dared to get up too quickly. If you don’t have a towel and need on then expect to pay €11 for the privilege €10 of which is a deposit that if you don’t produce your ticket they will keep as clearly towels are in short supply in a hotel.
The on-site spa service was a 3rd party and they were actually very good. Very much needed after going 10 rounds with a sun lounger. Full body massage from €40 and it is certainly underpriced for the quality….this WAS 4 star service!
On the whole this hotel would’ve been 4 star probably 20 years ago but has failed to hit the mark by a long long way and needless to say that my next visit to Madeira I’ll wave at this hotel as I drive past it on my way to one that is actually 4 star.

Thank you for your kind review and sadly nothing to comment considering an anonimous one, otherwise we would certainly be able to comment on some of your points and for sure as per our daily reports any particular issue. Clearly, to pay is an issue for services and indeed for what you paid, did not include features, therefore you cannot expect to have as many others get. Furthermore, we are sure of one thing as you compare to other 4 stars - our hotel is much cheaper than all other 4 star hotels, threfore being price driven, you had a very nice 4 star hotel. And as a last comment on breakfast - we have 4 rotating menus, therefore we are sorry, but it is not true that everyday is the same. Likewise, our team are fully available for any special request to anhance ytour breakfast. Thank you for your visit.

Me and my wife was looking for a hotel in Madeira for our weeks stay we came across this one good price for bed&breakfast we had a room to the back of the hotel wax room. 616 had everything you needed there was rooms with a sea view fir a extra cost. We found the check in very easy and staff was helpful too. As we was on bed and breakfast we used the restaurant in the morning well laid out and staff very helpful too they had a range of food to choose from. As the hotel was central to Funchal we could walk around from shop to shop. We used the hotel pool facilities to loads of sun beds and nice pool too. The hotel was very well kept to. There is a small car park but if no space then you can park on the hill rem to leave in gear and full hand brake on. It’s a hotel I would return to but would pay the extra for a front room.

We booked this trip last minute 2 days before and struggled to find somewhere to stay. We were so disappointed first of all the reception staff please train them! There is no greetings, no help given for information about the island (it’s a beautiful island they should at least ask guests if they want any recommendations), asking about how your stay is. When no one if around and you see reception staff daily not bother to greet you it is really sad!
The breakfast is poor and the same each day so we went out most of the time as it was very basic. The breakfast staff were nice though.
The air conditioning is the worst I have ever experienced owners of the hotel should really look into it! I moved room and heard others on the trip say how bad it is.
The room is basic and outdated the pillows are terrible I had to ask for extra as they are so lumpy. However the view of the sea is nice and room is kept clean.
Location is good lots of restaurants nearby and you have the lido too.
If you want to get to the centre prepare yourself for a long 45 minute walk with big hills or get a bus down.
During our stay the water went out called reception and was greeted with a very rude response so I couldn’t wash that evening and felt bad about contacting reception which you shouldn’t as a guest.
The pool area was okay with lots of sun loungers and parasols too.
Overall don’t bother spend more money and go somewhere that’s nice as Madeira is an incredible island you’ll love it!

Dear Jessica, Thanks for your review. It's not at all what we like to read, so please allow me to add a few words... I must say that I'm very surprised to read your comments regarding our reception team. We normally get good feedback and I'm sure that maybe due to the fact that we were completely full, we're not able to give you the attention you deserve. I honestly think that was the case. Our breakfast (that we do not charge) is a full american, buffet style. It has scrambled&boiled eggs, baked beans, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon. Cheeses, ham, smoked ham, 2 types of yoghourt, croissants, bread toast, rustic bread slices small bread rolls with and without seeds, 3 types of cereals, cold milk, hot milk, espresso, latte, coffee, tea, three types of juices. And fresh fruit. To consider this as "basic"... The AC, you're absolutely right, as we faced issues in some of the rooms. We've already took the necessary measures in order to solve this. The pillows, we have some alternatives, but we do consider that you also have a point there. We are located in one of the city centers, with lots of entertaining spots and if you wish to go to the old part of town, well, it will take you around 20 minutes in a relaxed walk (I'm over 50, by the way...). No way, 45 minutes! :):):). Just to finish, I would like to thank you for letting us know your opinion and to also to present you our apologies for not fullfilling your expectations. Regards from Funchal, Jorge Xavier - GM

I booked two nights here for 45 euros per night b&b. Our room on the 7th floor had lovely views from the balcony over the sea, the room and bed were comfortable. I requested a kettle which was quickly provided with cups and a selection of teas and coffee sachets. We didn't use the pool or massage suite offered by the hotel during our stay as we wanted to visit Funchal which was about a 20 minute walk away.
Breakfast offered a range of hot food, fruit, pastries and continental options, which was okay, but not 4 start quality - the coffee was not pleasant and the fruit juices tasted like they were from powder certanly not fresh juice, but the choice available meant that we did not leave hungry. Tables were laid out in long rows with little space to move around easily. Outdoor tables were available, but left you at the mercy of a pigeon attack for your food. A poster in the small lift advertised rooms in the hotel from 19 euros per night (b&b) when booked directly for 3 nights or more which sounded like a very good deal, but also highlighted possible desperation of a 4 star hotel. Nonetheless it served our needs very well four our two night stay. .

I paid for a mountain view room however there was building works going on over the road so my view was just scaffolding and building works which started loudly from early in the morning. I asked to move rooms so I could get a better sleep and some privacy from the building workers but I was told I would have to pay. As a woman it’s uncomfortable going onto your balcony (dressed!) with workers whistling at you.
The lifts in the building are shaky, slow and old and feel like they are about to break. Feel like I spent half my time waiting for them.
The pool area you would not want to sit around it honestly feels like something from a 2* Benidorm complex. This needs to be downgraded in its ratings Everything was yellow, old and outdated. My parents paid for a 4* hotel about 2 min walk away and it was a whole different class (Alto Lido).

Dear Wanderer, I'm really sorry for the inconveniences mentioned. We should have moved you at no cost to a sea view room, I must agree. Our lifts are in perfect condition, inspected and well maintained. However, they're just two of them and in rush ours (breakfasts and dinners) they face difficulties to bring all our Guests to the ground floor. Our pool is normally considered one of the most atratctive points this hotel has, and I'm a bit surprised with your words. Once again, please accept our apologies for not being able to fulfill your expectations. Regards from Madeira, Jorge Xavier - GM

We stayed for 2 weeks here. The property is really nice. Yes, like others have said that it's harder to get to the main promenade if you have difficulty walking. It requires taking several stairs to get there. Even when you take the back entry through the parking area, it has a really steep climb up to the street. So, if easy access in/from the main drag, this may not be a hotel for you. That's that....
Over all, our stay was wonderful. Everyone but 1 person (a young lady working the front desk) are nice. That 1 lady doesn't seem to be so interested in her job. She is lacked of character and snappy. Because of that, I can not give a full 5 bars on the overall rating. All the other employees are super nice.
We celebrated my husband 61st birthday while in Madeira. They had a bottle of prosecco waiting for us when we returned from brunch. It was truly a nice touch. And we really appreciated that.
The hotel is rather outdated but they keep everything in working order which is fine with us. The shower is great, great room for European size hotels, great views from the balconies (we got 2 balconies).
The breakfast could use some variety. After the 3rd day, i think we pretty much tried everything they have in repeat. We then started bringing extra items to the breakfast that we bought at a local grocery store.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay here. But like everyone said," There's always a bad apple in a basket" (i'm referring to that young lady working the front desk!) .. She could use some more customer service training sessions.

No out door only
It was done a few years ago. I have to say we have stayed at the dorisol hotels and the Raga is much much better value.
But of course!!! We'll take that into serious consideration. Any problem, my office it's just behind the reception!
Regards from Funchal,
Jorge Xavier - GM
