Ajuda is the area (a couple of miles out of central Funchal), so there are one or two other hotels with that in the title (Jardins d'Ajuda, Musa d'Ajuda, for instance).

The Ajuda Madeira is a pleasant enough hotel with generous room space and extremely helpful staff. Guests were a mixture of English, French, German and Dutch. Breakfast is expansive, dinner is buffet-style, with a usual choice of two fish and two meat dishes (My wife and I are not vegetarian, but there didn't seem much on offer for those who are -- apart from salads). There's a floor show on a couple of evenings during dinner.

The pool is quite small, with beds (free) and umbrellas (1 euro 50 to hire). We went slightly out-of-season (September), so space wasn't a problem. The pool man keeps a close eye on activities.

There's a courtesy bus into Funchal centre and back. One pleasant surprise was the rather stylish shopping mall a short walk from the hotel. Another was that we were assigned a holiday rep., even though we booked independently through lastminute.com. Joanna was able to arrange excursions and a much cheaper option of getting to the airport at the end of the holiday.

To sum up, a relaxed and comfortable hotel that will probably appeal more to couples than families. Happy holiday!

After reading reviews on the website I was a bit wary of what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised! Comfortable Hotel, well situated, helpful staff, good food, clean rooms, although some decor was in need of a bit of TLC. Overall we had an excellent holiday and enjoyed our stay at the D'Ajuda.

We stayed at the Ajuda Madeira for two weeks in September and on arrival we were greeted with a very friendly receptionist who gave us a map of the area and other useful information. On entering our room, we found a fantastic view of the sea (we were on the third floor) and a nice marble bathroom. The downside to this was that the carpet in our room was bald in places and had large pieces missing from it. We could have changed rooms but opted not to do this as our sea view was so good. Breakfast is buffet style with the usual breads, cheeses, cereal, cake and champagne! There was also a cooked option but the food was the same every day. Staff at the hotel were very pleasant; especially the pool man who would do his best to ensure that the area was clean at all times. There were always plenty of available sunbeds and the main pool was usually free since this tends to be a hotel for couples, not groups of teenagers. The hotel location was good, nice and quiet but a 40 minute walk to the centre of Funchal. There is, however, a courtesy bus service which runs from outside the hotel into town but beware: there is no service into Funchal between 11.30am and 3pm due to siesta-style working hours. This was a lovely, spotless hotel; the rooms are cleaned every day and it was very good value for money. There is a panoramic bar on the 6th floor which affords a fantasic view of the sea but the bar closed in June which is a terrible shame as we would have used it regularly. Overall, the Ajuda is very good value for money but not suitable for those with walking difficulties as it is situated on quite a steep hill. On the downside, we seemed to be the only Brits in the hotel since most of the guests were German, French or Portugese. If you go out for a meal in the area, I would avoid the Summertime restaurant on the main strip as the service is terrible, the food is awful (try eating fish that hasn't been scaled or gutted) and we were charged 15 euros for a bottle of wine that we were given when our first choice was not available. We later saw the same bottle of wine in a local supermarket priced at 1 euro 50! Avoid this place!!

To escape the rain in good ol' GB, we booked a "last minute" to Madeira. To be honest, there was little else available and having heard good reports of Madeira, but never having been, we thought we would try it out.
We were not disappointed. It would be hard to find any grumbles. The Hotel was clean, reception greeted us in a friendly way and with efficiency, the room was spacious, clean and had a wonderful view (being on the 5th floor) right the way down to Funchal and over the sea. The Restaurant was clean (if a little warm), the food was buffet with plenty of choices, all of them tasty and plentiful (we were half board). Restaurant Staff were the best, service was faultless and they were up for a laugh and made our stay really enjoyable.
The Pool area was spotless, always beds available with only one couple insisting on "booking" their beds with their towels(when are hotels going to stop this stupid practice!).
There was always a pianist/guitarist playing/singing in the evening, tastefully and well done.
The Hotel was a little far out of Funchal, we took a 45 minute walk, but the Coastal Path (only some of the way) is lovely and Service Buses are cheap and plentiful, as are Taxis. In all, we loved it and will certainly return to Madeira to see more of this beautiful Island.

Great hotel with wonderful, welcoming and obliging staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The outdoor pool is COLD.
Don't exchange cash at CAXIA GERAL banks. There is an unadvertised 10% surcharge

Arriving at the hotel we were greeting very well, although the first room we were given was very shabby when we asked for a new one this was done with no hesitation, this room was lovely. The bar and restaurant staff are fab, always cheery and up for a laugh.
The hotel was always clean, the pool man kept the pool area clean, plenty of beds and brollies (both free),with a selection of English reading books to borrow.
Large selection of food for breakfast, buffet for dinner - salads, 4 main dishes (fish of some description most nights) you have to try the local fish - Espada - known locally as the ugly fish - very nice.
Duo played every night in the bar, only 7 of us there, which is a shame because they were good and up for a laugh when we all joined in.
Area very quiet at night but only a 15 min walk to the lido area with lots of bars and restaurants - China Town restaurant is great. Irish pub called O'Brien's with real beer but very expensive at 5 euros a pint.
Coach trips great should do east and west coasts, fab scenery.
We went for 2 weeks got a bit long towards the end 1 week would probably have done but had a grreat time.

Very very bad hotel, I don't know where the four stars will be found😳. In the middle of August without air conditioning all week, an oven in the rooms and dining room. We had a room facing the road and we had to ask for a change, it was impossible to sleep with the noise (and heat). The cleaning is poor, the hallways look like something out of a horror movie, the carpet can't have any more stains and it smells horrible, one day we found a huge cockroach. In the dining room it was impossible to have breakfast because of the heat. I don't recommend it but it's not even close to a bad vacation.

Double bed (5ft), writing desk/vanity table, small table, 3 chairs, balcony with 2 sunloungers and drinks table. Small kitchen area with 2 ring cook top, sink, fridge and small selection of pans, crockery glasses and cutlery. Large enough to cater for casual meals but not enough for a formal dinner. Ensuite bathroom with over bath shower, wc, bidet. We found it very adequate as we occasionally prefer to get fresh food from local shops such as fruit, veg fish etc and local food is wonderful. The fact there are very good local shops close by encourages you to try something different. The 'land view' in our case was over the pool and towards the mountains beyond Funchal. Wonderful. We would certainly go again. Be aware that the evening meals are pretty basic and very 'local'.

No. There are best hotels to stay. There are no free parking, you have to leave the hotel to go eat and go to the pool. The best thing is very clean..
