Unless "Frank Widsor" "PC Fancy Smith" or "Emergency Ward 10" are instantly recognisable to you then you are probably of age too young to fully appreciate and enjoy a stay in this quintissentially and unashamedly old world charm hotel which sits in luscious and beautiful gardens in the hills above Funchal.

Here the pace of life is testament to Einstein's theory that "all time is relative".

Nothing moves fast here, except the staff for whom the needs and expectations of the guests are met with exceptional courtesy and efficiency. Nothing is too much trouble for them to ensure that your stay will be most enjoyable from start to finish.

The buildings are akin to a country manor house in the Cotswolds, with paintings and fine china dispalyed in cabinets throughtout the hotel and the adjoining "old house". The library in the old house is a haven of tranquillity for those of us who relish books not Kindles.

Dinner is a set four course meal, unless you choose to be regally entterained with an a la carte extravaganza in the private dining room in the old house. Altough it may be a set four course meal its quality is superb..every night.

But, as I indicated above, it is the staff who are the stars of the show, not the buildings.

Led by the oustanding Hilario ( the maitre d') you will be literally waited on hand and foot by the quiet, unassuming, Sonia or the effervescent and vivacious Carina.

Ah Carina ! She bubbles like champagne with an ever present smile as she glides around the dining room.

If you are lucky you might bump into Hercule Poirot on the stairs or Professor Plum deep in conversation with Colonel Mustard in the library.

Have you got the picture..I hope I have summed it up.

I can only add my own experience of this lovely hotel to the glowing reviews it has already received. Despite the Covid restrictions we were treated as honoured guests, receiving excellent service at all times. The staff were, without exception, friendly and efficient, making sure our holiday was the best it could be. Our room was spacious, well maintained and spotlessly clean with fresh flowers which lasted for the whole week. The dining room easily accommodated everyone with ample social distancing and every detail had been thought of to make each meal special. We had opted for half board and each meal was a delight - the delicious food coupled with the friendly and attentive staff confirmed that we had made the right decision.

The hotel is in a quiet location with a five minute walk to the bus stop into Funchal town. The delightful swimming pool was a restful place to relax and the poolside bar provided more excellent food.

This hotel obviously has high standards and prides itself on it's excellent service, with seemingly no compromise to that service despite the difficulties thrown up by Covid.

We stayed at this hotel for a week over new year to see the fireworks. We normally stay in the center of Funchal but decided to stay a bit outside of the town. The hotel was very nice with spacious clean rooms, however it is a very quiet hotel. We never saw anyone in the restaurants of an evening or in the small pool bar. Having said that if it is piece and quiet you want then this is the hotel for you. The only downside is that the hotel is in a residential area and there is nothing around. If you want to go to the restaurants or sightseeing in Funchal you have to either book the hotel shuttle bus, walk or get a taxi. The shuttle bus runs until 6pm in the week and not on Sundays or bank holidays and it drops you in one place only at the harbour which sometimes isn’t convenient if you want to go to the old town for example or to the other end by Reid’s. The walk into Funchal from the hotel is mainly down hill and takes around 35-45 minutes. The walk back is up a very steep hill and is not recommended as some roads do not have pavements, it is a very hard walk. Taxis from the hotel into Funchal can cost anything from 7 to 10 euros depending on day of week and time. This is our 4th time to visit Madeira for the fireworks. We watched them from the pool already and although spectacular, we should have watched them from down in Funchal where we normally do as we felt we missed out on the atmosphere of it all, there was no atmosphere at the hotel, everyone had been to the gala dinner at the hotel and were all dressed in Black, you would think you was at a funeral, there was no sparkle and no fun. The hotel rooms are very clean, the only disappointment is that if you have a room with a balcony as we did, there are no lights on the balcony so you couldn’t sit out and read in the evening or have a drink on the balcony as it is very dark. There is no entertainment in the hotel at all that we saw and the restaurants are quite expensive. The buildings are very beautiful and the grounds lovely with a nice pool, although freezing, and tennis courts. The staff are a credit to the hotel and are very friendly and helpful. Plus a very friendly cat that likes to sit on the sun bed with you lol! Overall a very nice hotel however we would not stay here again as it is too far from the town and cost us a fortune in taxis back up the hill every evening. We however enjoyed our stay thank you.

If you're looking for a 'retreat', where peace, tranquillity and relaxation is paramount, this hotel will probably suit. It is in a location about 40 minutes walk or 10 minutes taxi ride into central Funchal. There's a regular public bus service close by, and the hotel operates a free shuttle to/from town several times each weekday. The hotel itself is an elegant former 'Quinta' in a lovely garden setting. The pool area is very pleasant and relaxing, with a mixture of sun loungers, towels, parasols, tables and chairs. There is a bar which serves drinks and snacks. The hotel is filled with an array of antiques which the owner has collected over many years. The à la carte restaurant is housed in a separate building in the hotel grounds. Clearly, the hotel was mothballed for a considerable time due to the pandemic. The friendly, helpful lovely staff are working extremely hard to bring it back to life. I fear they're fighting a losing battle, and, despite their very best efforts, this is, at best, a 4 star establishment. That said, we enjoyed a very pleasant stay, thanks to the wonderful staff - clearly the hotel's biggest asset, as nothing was too much trouble to them. Our air-conditioned [balcony] rooms in the annex were clean, spacious and comfortable, and cleaned and refreshed on a daily basis. The breakfast, served in the conservatory dining room was tasty and plentiful, offering a choice of fresh coffee, fruit, cereals, breads, pastries, juices and a hot buffet. Everything felt covid-safe, making for a welcome break in the Madeiran sunshine

As expected from previous visits to Funchal especially the seafront area we were not surprised to find a quiet mountain side residential location. However,a short walk up the quiet road you come across a large supermarket and other amenities including a very useful pharmacy for tests etc.
We stayed for 2 weeks and definitely enjoyed a lovely peaceful time amongst the swimming pool,gym/spa and beautiful extensive gardens complete with a friendly black cat.
During our stay we met various guests who keep returning to this hotel.
We chose to upgrade our room in order to enjoy the benefits of the morning sun, lovely view of the bay and a balcony.
The breakfast buffet arrangement was meticulously hygienic especially given present conditions. Dinner comprised of a excellent 4 course cordon bleu meal.My vegetarian option was well catered for every evening. In particular on one occasion one of the chefs created a home style cous cous dish which was really memorable.
The service was without exception exemplary from the reception,to the room service to the dining room and even the pool/spa area.
All in all we had a very enjoyable experience in the warm climate and equally warm hospitality. We do not hesitate to recommend visiting this hotel.

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable week at the Quinta to celebrate our anniversary. The room was first class as was every aspect of the Hotel. Very traditional colonial style building packed with antiques collected by the owners.
The staff at all levels were very helpful courteous and obliging. Although we hadn’t declared my wife was vegetarian (a mistake on my behalf when making the booking) the Head Waiter and all the waiting staff ensured she was well looked after. A big thanks to them.
The evening meal comprises of 5 courses if you go for the half board option. One always a soup and another being a fish course. The finale is of course dessert. The a la carte evening meal is served separately in the Mansion House part of the estate. We didn’t try it. There is a 30% discount if you decide to eat there.
Breakfast is very good with a continental cold meat and cheese selection or traditional British style bacon scrambled eggs etc choice. Plenty of fresh fruit etc available. As well as a glass of bubbly if that is your choice.
Also many thanks to Paula on reception for arranging the complimentary bottle of sparkling wine when she discovered it was our wedding anniversary.
All in all a very enjoyable stay and we would be happy to return

It's hard to give an accurate review of a hotel in these Covid-19 times. We stayed for a week, only leaving yesterday and unfortunately, the hotel was 90% empty with only 8 or 9 rooms occupied. Usually we were the only people in for breakfasts or around the pool or in the bar. So, at times, it felt a bit soulless, which was a shame.
The staff couldn't do enough for you as they were really looking for thing to do! We were only bed and breakfast and there was ample choice available for anything you would like. Even sparkling wine if you could face it in the morning.

I highly recommend upgrading to a room with a balcony, as the view overlooking the pool area and down to Funchal is stunning.

There is a nice bar area next to the pool where you can get lunch. We did this a couple of times and the quality was excellent. By the way, if you are a keen swimmer, I hope you don't mind a cold pool...it was freezing!
The room was a good size, with that lovely balcony, but overall, could do with upgrading. The bathroom was certainly dated. But this is a minor point to be honest. The grounds are stunning and well maintained. Its like being in a forest!

Overall, if you like being in a an all singing, all dancing modern resort, you will hate it. If you like a bit of 'old school' ambiance, service and decor, you will love it.

One point to note...its really too far to walk in to town each night if you are bed and breakfast. We got an uber each way at a cost of about 7 Euro. A regular taxi is a little more I think. There is a cheaper shuttle provided by the hotel but the last one down to town is around 6pm I think.

We are due to come back to Madeira in 3 weeks and I suspect we will be staying right here as we really enjoyed out stay.

If you're looking for serene elegance and relaxation with lovely food and a wonderful team of staff then this is a place to go. Being well out of the town in a peaceful hillside location does mean you may spend a fair amount of time in and around the hotel but the facilities are good and it has everything you need.

Our superior room had a small balcony in the main building. The air-con in the room was excellent, and the bathroom was steam free faster than any other hotel we have visited. We found the furnishings very comfortable, and there was a residents' lounge with sofas, books, computer, board games and a wide balcony overlooking the gardens.

The food was excellent. Healthy, varied, restrained on the carbs and focused on good quality ingredients in good but not excessive portions. We had the half board fixed 4-course evening meals. Each one had a starter, a fish course, a meat course and a dessert. Only a few wines by the glass but they were delicious and decent value.

The hotel staff, without exception, are friendly and quietly efficient, ensuring that all guests' needs are attended to as best they can. We were always put at our ease and very well looked after.

The pool is kept very clean by the staff who we saw clearing filters two or three times a day, removing leaves and flowers that had blown in, keeping pool towels and sunbeds readily available. There's even "Lucky" the hotel cat to keep everyone company!

The courtesy bus is handy, taking it one way is fine, and taxis down into town are not terribly expensive (7-10 euros depending on how far down you want to be dropped off).

Admittedly this is an hotel which will attract, shall we say, the more mature visitor but if you want a relaxing holiday this would be very hard to beat.

This hotel is in the west of Funchal, so unless you are fit, you will take the taxi service or the hotel courtesy buses. It has beautiful extensive gardens, and a pool overlooking the city. Impressive dark antique quality furniture are placed throughout, which adds to the sense of class that the hotel exudes. We looked at many other options and for value, and quality, this is an excellent option. Well worth spending a little more to get the space and tranquility. The staff are multilingual and charmingly helpful. It is the small details that stand out. A definite recommendation. It is Mostly an older crowd 60ish that stay here. But that is true of Madeira in general. They were people who enjoy good things in life. And this hotel is one of those good things.

From the silver service 5 course dinners to the antique desk in the sitting room every detail is carefully done. The chef amended the 5 course dinner menu to suit us as vegetarians. Every course was different every day. The recommended wines were ideal for the food. The waiters were efficient and made us feel comfortable and cosseted. Magda, Albino and Eusabio had a great sense of humour. The room was large and airy with comfy arm chairs. The balcony gave exceptional views across Funchal and out to the ocean. A quiet place to relax and wander through extensive gardens with amazing trees. Then have a drink and lunch at the pool bar. If you want to be surrounded by opulence, paintings, antiques, a piano bar and old fashioned chic, then go here. If you want glass, cement, disco, dj, brash entertainment go elsewhere.

Probably not good for walks as it's in a sort of suburb. Lovely hotel though with nice grounds, great comfort and good food. Splendid views over Funchal.
