Hotel do Carmo is 3 stars hotel right in Funchal's city center, with an ideal position to discover the city's main points of interest. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and shops nearby. This hotel is a very good example of late nineteen sixties interior design, which confers it an identity and style of its own. It has 80 bedrooms all equipped with a 32'LCD television with cable TV, free wifi, direct telephone and a private bathroom. They are uniquely decorated with photo panels with icons of the sixties. All of its furniture and decorations are also clearly identified with this period. Most of them (49) have a balcony. Hotel do Carmo has a Restaurant were breakfast and other meals are served. The Bar on the reception floor has a nice terrace and a television where clients can watch Sports TV channels and play Billiards. On the last floor there's an outdoor swimming pool with a wonderful view over the bay and the surrounding mountains. Free Wifi is provided is all areas of the hotel

Nestled in the heart of Funchal, Hotel do Carmo charms guests with its 60s-themed décor and nostalgic atmosphere. Visitors consistently commend the staff's friendly service and the hotel's spotless condition. While the rooms are noted for their cleanliness and comfortable showers, a few guests mention they are compact and lack air conditioning. The rooftop pool is a highlight, albeit with a few remarks about the absence of a pool bar and limited loungers. Despite the occasional noise complaint, many find Hotel do Carmo to be a cost-effective, well-located base for city exploration.

We stayed her just after New Year for 6 nights. I cn honestly say I have never fallen for a hotel quite like I did for Hotel Do Carmo. Everything about it is fantastic, and the atmosphere of the place is wonderful. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, the decor of the Hotel is fabulous, the breakfast each morning was plentiful, the room spotlessly clean, and the location just perfect for getting around. In addition to this, they noticed it was my other half's birthday whilst we were staying, and they phoned the room on the day to check if we were in and proceeded to being up some chocolate and a bottle of bubbly for her, which was so thoughtful. I was actually really sad to leave, and I hope to get back in the near future. I can't recommend Hotel Do Carmo enough. Thank you.

This is a 3* hotel which is clean, comfortable, convienient, with lovely friendly staff. The 60's theme, with dark wood and green tiles can make it feel dark, but the beds are comfy, the rooms are kept spotless and the breakfasts are more than adequate for a days sightseeing. I would not recommend half board as too many nice restaurant nearby to choose from.
The pool area and roof terrace have great views over Funchal and are really good for relaxing. We had a balcony room on the 4th floor which meant we got the afternoon sun, but was a little noisy first thing on a morning and during the evening rush hour, but after that was surprisingly quiet.
One of the main advantages of this hotel is its position, 5 mins walk will get you to the promanade, the old town or the main areas near the cathedral.
If you are looking for entertainment, a lively bar or similar this is not for you. This was our 4th visit, and we will be back.

Hotel do Carmo set in the middle of Funchal close to the market, the old town and the bus station. Which made it really convenient as the bus station was on the sea front. The hotel is a three star, exceptionally clean and well kept. The room was adequate with a balcony and really good shower. No fridge or kettle in room. Downstairs the bar was comfortable and relaxing with lots of space. Snacks & meals served in the bar were well prepared and fresh. The pool and terrace on the roof was very clean and comfortable with fabulous views over Funchal and the sea.

But, what makes this hotel special is the staff. They could not have been more helpful, they were really friendly and pleasant, the girl behind the bar was friendly pleasant efficient and professional. The reception helped immensely when we found our flight had been cancelled. The cleaning staff worked hard to keep the rooms up to standard (making sure the curtain which came off the rail twice was fixed).

Definitely would return to this hotel.

After a diverted flight to Santa Porto due to poor weather, followed by ferry, bus and taxi transfer, arriving at around 9pm (tired and in the dark) our first impression of the hotel location was not great. The check in was smooth and we were given a welcome drink and our key to 409 (Roger Moore...not my favourite James Bond but hey ho) The following day we quickly discovered it was an excellent location to get to the restaurants and bars in both the old and new town in around 10-15 minutes, a really good supermarket, the cable car station and the port. I can't add much to the most recent (positive) reviews
All of the staff we dealt with were excellent. I was loaned a 2 pin plug and offered an early breakfast (ahead of a 3am checkout, I just went with black coffee). A bottle of fizz and chocolate was delivered to our room as a birthday surprise.
The room and public areas were cleaned to a high standard. There are 2 lifts that worked well.
The decor is a little tired in places but there are also some quirky features and items like old radios and tills that really make the place. There is some noise from surrounding area but exactly what I'd expect of a 4* hotel in a city location and it was actually much quieter than many places I've stayed
The storage space in the room was fine for a week stay and there were plenty of hangers, spare pillows etc. The 'window' was a sliding (patio) door which opened from both sides and the blackout curtain/fan were fine. There were 4 usb charging points in the room which I didn't expect and several english tv channels
Options for chargeable extra eg fridge, room safe and pool towels are great to have. I would not choose to stay in the hotel during warmer months due to the lack of AC but it was perfect for a November stay.

The only disappointments were no kettle in the room or the choice to have one in the room. Missed that very much! Also it was not made clear a fridge could be had on request .

Paid an additional £100 for superior balcony room... balcony view was the street and never got the sun. When in-fact the 5th floor was open roof with all the comforts, therefore balcony was not required. So i think this should be told to customer when balcony requested. £100 was a total waste .

Menu needs revising!!’... soup varied but was always green, bland and luke warm
Would have been nice to have the choice of a Christmas dinner rather than a choice of pork/chicken/espitada, 3 roasties, veg and no gravy. Food was not always hot!

Otherwise:
Bed was amazingly comfortable
Plenty of choice for breakfast
Cleaned daily/fresh towels daily
Staff friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble
Hotel itself did not dissapoint.
Would i stay again ...Yes

Had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel do Carmo last week. It may be small in comparison to other hotels in Funchal, but it’s central location and facilities exceeded all my expectations.

The 70s vibe of the public areas is quirky, but fits the style of the accommodation perfectly. All the staff we came into contact with during the week were friendly and efficient. And the glass of fizz offered during check-in was most welcome.

Our room, on the fifth floor, was a decent size, as was the bathroom and balcony. It was cleaned and serviced daily, and towels were changed regularly. The two built-in 2 USB sockets, at each side of the headboard, were a nice touch. As was the ceiling fan, which we used on several occasions when we found the temperature just a little too warm. Not sure if the sliding doors of the built-in wardrobe were taken off deliberately, but it made this room divider feel odd. And if hotels decided to provide security boxes in bedrooms, then my opinion is that they should be free of charge, and not require an additional key to be purchased.

Our balcony faced a neighbouring building which has a large, noisy, air conditioning system. This was more noticeable at night. Closing the balcony doors suppressed the sound, but increases the overall temperature of the bedroom. I’m also not a fan of bathroom windows, from adjacent rooms, open on to other people’s private balconies. As was the case here. Why do architects think that’s a great solution?

The roof terraces and swimming pool are excellent, and offer amazing views over Funchal to the harbour and beyond. We took full advantage of these in the afternoons, once our main daytime trips etc were over.

As others have already written, breakfast was okay but felt a little samey. Flavours of yoghurt, types of cheese and cold meats, alternating days of sausage or bacon, and types of homemade cake were the only variations. I also feel the hotel is missing a trick with their lounge area. It’s marketed as a “sports bar” but I never once saw anyone playing pool, or watching the relentless football that is screened on their television. The hotel did show the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II though, which was not only a nice gesture, but also appreciated by many UK guests who congregated there to watch it together.

This is a 3-star hotel, which I can understand given the nice rooftop terraces and pool area. BUT the rooms, or certainly our room, were not of the same standard.
We stayed as part of a small group tour holiday, based in Funchal, so had no real choice about room type etc. Our room was, I’m assuming, one of their more basic doubles, overlooking the courtyard used at breakfast time. It was quite small for a double room, with a standard double bed (rather than two joined singles, which would have given us more sleeping space, but wouldn’t have fitted into the room). There was basic furniture but the wardrobe drawers were unusable as the sliding doors jammed in such a way as the drawers wouldn’t open. So we just piled our clothes in the base of the wardrobe. We hired a fridge (€3 per night) but didn’t bother hiring the key for the safe. We hired pool towels to take out on day trips where there was a potential for swimming etc; the deposit was refunded when returned so the hire was effectively free.
The bathroom was small and dated but functional enough, with a good shower (although it did tend to spray onto the floor even when we were standing right up against the wall).
The ceiling fan worked well in our room, which is why we didn’t ask to change rooms (others in our group had fans which didn’t work as well) but it literally only had any effect whatsoever in the area immediately under it, which wasn’t even all of the bed! So the room itself was incredibly hot, even with the window open all night, and the bathroom was so bad that you were soaked with sweat pretty much immediately after leaving the shower…
Breakfasts were very good, with a plentiful and varied supply of very nice fresh fruit as well as tomato and cucumber, breads, hams, cheeses, pastries and some hot choices too. The juices were a bit odd but fine; the cups were a very good size for getting a decent cup of tea in the morning!
Lactose free and soya milk were both available; I didn’t notice any gluten free bread though.
Staff were all lovely and most spoke excellent English. A nice touch is that you can use the pool, roof terraces and bar etc after checking out, including keeping hire towels until the last minute if wanted; this is very useful if, like us, you have an evening flight home. They are happy to keep luggage too but it wasn’t kept in a secure place, just in the corner of the bar.
The location is excellent, just a few minutes walk from the Mercado dos Lavradores and about 10 minutes from the Monte cable car station. There is a large supermarket, useful for snacks and drinks, on the way to the Mercado.
I wouldn’t stay here again, simply because our room was so small and hot. A shame.

This hotel ticked all our boxes. Excellent price, central location, clean, quiet, wonderfully helpful staff, generous breakfasts ... plus a rooftop pool and further panoramic roof viewing area with additional sun loungers. I really could not fault it.

It does not have the spa/gym amenities of the bigger hotels that are further out of town so if you are looking for a 'resort' type experience it would not suit. However if you want a base to easily explore the island while being minutes away from town for meals and evenings out it is ideal. And the pool is fantastic for a dip and sunbathe after a day on the levadas. Staff will bring drinks up to you there, also in the morning fill your water bottles (with ice!) ready for the next hike.

It is the staff who give this hotel the edge - they are genuinely helpful, professional and lovely to deal with and the place runs very smoothly.

But the hotel itself is lovely anyway. There are a lot of comments about how 'dated' it is but the solid wood fixtures, piano in the bar etc are things that millennials rave about as mid-century modern and they are certainly very well taken care of and well preserved here. And the bathrooms are proper genuine modern (and spotless). Rooms and towels are cleaned daily.

If you wish to have either a fridge or safe you need to hire these separately for a couple of Euros a day and it's worth packing a travel kettle for your first morning cuppa. There are flat screen TVs with some English speaking channels with subtitles for you to practice your Portuguese. We had a fourth floor balcony room and we could see down to the marina and the ocean and away to some of the mountains but of course you are in the (low rise) city centre so the view is busy. I would definitely recommend having the balcony.

Breakfast is buffet style, very clean and organized, had something for everyone really - scrambled and boiled eggs every day plus either bacon or sausages, all the bread, pastries (including local) and croissants plus cheese, meats you might wish for and fruit, yoghurt etc, a pod espresso machine and other teas and coffees also. There was always plenty of it.

I booked this as a bargain break not expecting too much but we really had the best time there and I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. You even get a glass of fizz when you arrive which is a nice touch. It's a great place and if you go there you will be happy.

The hotel has a very good, safe location, close to the city centre and main tourist attractions, which can be reached by foot. The breakfast is rich and diverse. The city view from the hotel rooftop is wonderful. The reception staff is extremely kind (thank you, Nadia Correia and Tania Capello!). Upon request, a safe transfer by taxi from/to airport can be arranged at a reasonable price from the reception desk. Also, various excursions for exploring the island. It is true that noise from other rooms can be heard, which is quite disturbing during the night. I experienced it one night, but after I called the reception, it stopped in a few minutes. So, do not hesitate...

We had a lovely week here in this friendly hotel. The hotel rooms are fairly basic and, as it is in a small side street, it doesn't have beautiful views, but it is clean and comfortable and was great value .It is in a great location for seeing the city being just a 5 minute stroll to one of the main shopping streets and only another 5 minutes to the seafront and all the restaurants of the old town. The roof top pool is only small, but this hotel is aimed at those wanting to sight see rather than sunbathe and in November there were always free beds. There is a small daily charge for the room safe. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore Funchal.

The toboggan ride (it's a wicker basket pushed down the road by 2 men) is nowhere near the hotel The cable car can be rode from the centre of Madeira - 10 min walk from the hotel down past the markets - up to Botanical Gardens or Monte Palace Gardens and from there is where the toboggan ride commences downhill back towards the centre. The toboggan isn't pushed up the mountain side from the town centre, it's pushed down the mountain roads.

Hi, yes it's true there is no air con. We had a ceiling fan but it literally only touched the area of the bed directly under it. We went in mid-late August and the room was incredibly hot and humid - hotter than outside and just as humid. It was very difficult to sleep and literally seconds after having a shower you were sweaty again.
