I have just returned from a solo stay here and I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough. The food was varied and of the highest standard and the gardens are delightful. I went for a few days of relaxation and to reset and that’s exactly what I did. It was calm and peaceful from the moment I arrived. But what really made my stay were the staff. They were so friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. I felt so relaxed and cared for from the moment I arrived and definitely plan to return for more relaxation very soon.

Casa Velha do Palheiro Hotel is located in the north of Funchal next door to Palheiro Gardens and close to Monte Botanical Gardens and to the itinery to Pico do Ariero. Please note that a vehicle is required. The road to access this estate is a severe climb even for a car especially with our Panda...
We stayed in the Golf Wing building on the ground floor so that we could profit from the terrace in the evening (good choice).
The room is classic old english style but in good state with very good bedding and fresh linen. The bathroom (1 x small shower + 1 x bath + 1 x sink + 1 x Toilet) is under the 5* standard but not off putting.
The amenities pool, spa, tennis court, badmington, ping pong & kit are included for guests of the hotel which is nice.
The breakfast served either inside or outside is ok with a choice of pastery, fruit, savery, juices ect...however the filter coffee served every morning was not good a self expresso machine might be a good option...But I must admit that it was very nice to breakfast every mornin in the garden.
The staff are all very very good especially Lhuis, Sergio and little gesture (the Madeira wine bottle, Bolo, Mineral water) are always welcome.
We do recommand Casa Velha do Palheiro it is a nice place to stay.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for seven nights over Christmas. The accommodation is spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable, bathroom was also large and the decor very traditional. We were made very welcome by the staff who were all very friendly and helpful. Staying on a bed and breakfast basis the breakfasts were excellent with a choice of hot cooked or continental. Eggs can also be cooked to order if you require poached or scrambled. As we prefer to eat during the day and sample local restaurants we only had one evening meal at the hotel which was very good. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to and from Funchal which needs to be booked in advance. A shuttle also runs to the golf club - again advance booking is required. The hotel also organised some excursions and also a wine tasting all of which were complimentary to residents. The hotel grounds and gardens are lovely and all in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Having holidayed in Madeira for eight weeks each year since 2011, and having spent that time in a similar, but lesser property, we were overjoyed to discover this beautiful hidden gem.
Set in a 324 acre estate, this stunning Georgian mansion has been scrupulously maintained by the fastidious owners, one of the islands very wealthiest families. There are luxurious guest rooms, both within the mansion itself, and in the additional low rise wings, built in 1997, in the same architectural style as the original home.
There is a large outdoor pool, a lovely spa, complete with heated indoor pool with jacuzzi jets, a sauna, and a nicely equipped gym.
For those seeking a more active break, there are tennis courts, and an 18 hole championship golf course.
Gourmet level lunches and dinners are served in the hotel's beautiful restaurant, and in the elegant golf club house.
For garden lovers, the are the vast ornamental Palheiro gardens, famed amongst the most beautiful on the island.
This hotel is truly peaceful. There is never any traffic noise to be heard, and no planes fly overhead, and yet, busy buzzy Funchal is just a 10 minute cab ride away.
Don't leave it too late to book, this elegant hotel has just 32 rooms, so the very highest levels of personal service are assured.

I booked a deluxe 2 night package with quite a few inclusions that turned out to be worth every penny. This hotel caters to more mature guests age-wise and to golfers so you will not find any noisy parties at all hours and rowdy crowds. the place is rather serene with subdued elegance and all time tranquility. if you wish, you can stroll in the adjacent gardens or take a swim in of of their two pools (outdoor and indoor). All meals are delicious and served with care My stay included a Wednesday and thus I was able to take part of the complimentary wine tasting, sort of happy hour, during which I met and spoke to the hotel general manager Mr. Norberto de Sousa and his two close associates Sonja and Catia. It was a delightful experience.

Pleasant hotel in the forest, 15 minutes drive from central Funchal.
The property is a part of a large complex with a golf course and prÃvate residences. The hotel is located in a 2 centuries old building plus two new wings. The gardens around are wonderful and the place is quiet and addequate to rest.
The staff was efficient, polite and profesional.
My room had good size, a good bathroom (without bidet), good towels and bathrobes, very good bed, a kettle with tea and instant coffee, good storage space, safety box, tv with good international channels selection, a complimentary bottle of Madeira wine and some sweets on arrival and was surprised by an excellent complimentary cake as i spent my birthday there. The air conditioned should improve: not enough power, and they do not allow to leave it on when going out.
Small dogs are accepted for 10 euros / night, which is a very reasonable price.
The swimming pool was pleasant.
There is sufficient free parking space.
I did not had time to use the Spa. I did not visit either their restaurant at the golf course.
The restaurant at the hotel was good, however the menu had limited variety.
Breakfast was good but not the best in my life.
I consider value for money reasonable.

This unique hotel is set in the most glorious location imaginable. The views are stunning. Looking down from the hill top location you have wonderful views of Funchal and the harbour and the sea for as far as you can see. The staff are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them. We stayed in the garden rooms which are spacious and very much in keeping with the theme of the hotel. Breakfast is eaten outside weather permitting which is another nice touch. The gardens are really nice with lots of wild life and well worth a stroll around. The pool and spa are another nice touch and also worth a visit. For the golfer there is a very testing golf course and for the fisherman the hotel has its own boat. highly recommended.

Our visit to Casa Velha can only be described as perfect. The accommodation even though the main house was in the middle of a renovation was fabulous. We barely knew the building work was going on. The staff, well where do i start ? They were the most attentive we have ever experienced, nothing was too much for them. Louis the front of house Manager was just Brilliant. The food was amazing, and a fantastic wine list to compliment the food. I'm a little lost for words how good this place is. If you want culture, relaxation, and a service with the upmost attention to detail then book now. A massive thank you to all the staff we will absolutely be returning. The location is up in the foothills and offers breath taking views, and although it inst walk-able into Funchal, the hotel provide a free shuttle bus service twice a day there and back. And to be honest taxis are around 20 Euros so not over pricey. P.s The gardens on the grounds of the Estate are jaw dropping beautiful.

We visited his lovely family hotel in the hills above Funchal and were met with familiar friendly staff to begin our week of golf and relaxation. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, most have been there for some time which speaks for itself. Luis the restaurant manager cannot be more helpful and is one of the reasons we return year after year. The restaurant serves high quality food with excellent choice of wines. The facilities, apart from the undulating testing golf course adorned with amazing flowers, are very good including a large outdoor pool a little cool at this time of the year but a heated indoor pool in the spa area and tennis and badminton courts. The hotel is set in colourful gardens but is also next to the Palheiro gardens which one can step into easily to appreciate the tropical floral colours and scents.

This Relais & Chateaux Hotel & Golf is located on a hilltop with impressive views over Funchal. This beautiful property was first established in 1801 by the Count of Carvalhal, now owned by the Blandy family since the XIX century (120 hectares). Amazing well kept gardens and golf course, charming staff and excellent food.
