Detailed Reviews
The location was excellent, very central but we had difficulty locating the hotel as it is a single entrance door with reception on the mezzanine floor and rooms above. We were on the first floor.
Breakfast was really good with hot and cold food and coffee or tea made for you but you have to collect.
Rooms cleaned everyday and staff very nice.
Being central nights were a bit noisy (we slept around 23.00) but could still here noise from the streeet outside. Two days after we arrived the local council decided to erect 2 portable toilets directly below our room in the street which exacerbated the noise and with the toilets being cleaned at 07.00 in the morning we strongly complained to the hotel. Nothing could be done at the weekend but We saw action on the Monday and the toilets were moved further down the road so full marks to the hotel on sorting this problem for us.

Brilliant location in central Funchal, a short walking distance from airport bus stop 6 on Avenida do Mer and close to main sights and many shops, cafes and restaurants.
Excellent value We booked directly with the hotel. Rates vary according to the time of year and whether it is a festival time. Very helpful and accommodating reception staff. They have information about local trips and can book these for you. There is a 24 hour concierge so it felt very safe.
There are 5 floors of rooms, standard and superior. We were in 502, on floor 5, a 'superior' room which had a lovely small private terrace overlooking the mountains at the back of the hotel. There is also a larger communal terrace on this floor at the front of the hotel with wonderful views of the Cathedral and surrounding area and the harbour. It was fascinating watching the cruise ships come in and out almost every day. The lift is quick and efficient.
502 is a good sized room with two single beds pushed together (see previous review), a desk, two chairs, TV with some English programmes, ample storage, plenty of coat hangars, a small fridge, safe (10 euros extra + 5 euros refundable key deposit), a good clean bathroom with bath, shower over bath and bidet, hairdryer and good magnifying mirror. Wi-Fi and air-con were good. No noticeable noise when we were there either externally or internally. NB No tea making facilities in the room.
Very good choice of food at the buffet breakfast which was included in the price. There was always a lovely variety of bread, rolls and pastries which varied from day to day and fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, cheese and ham as well as boiled or scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages and a variety of teas, coffees and juice. Everything was replenished constantly and very clean. The only negative as has been mentioned in previous reviews is that the restaurant area is small and it felt uncomfortably awkward. However the positives far out weigh this negative and this hotel definitely merits 5/5.

Our third visit and as before faultless. Room clean and tidy. Breakfast enjoyable. Excellent location. Staff very helpful especially Maria. Hotel has a front facing balcony on the top floor which is excellent for watching the cruise ships coming and going and people watching in general

Superb value hotel right in the centre of Funchal with fabulous friendly, helpful staff.
The room (501) was large and airy with a huge balcony overlooking the mountains. The beds were firm and comfy, the bath and shower hot and high pressured and everything was spotlessly clean. Also, a very good buffet breakfast.

This was a last minute stay. Great location by the Cathedral in the middle of the city. Staff were friendly and efficient. Breakfast was included and excellent. Room was a little sparse. ‘Double bed’ was actually 2 singles so if important please verify beforehand or at checkin

This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel. The hotel is right next to the Cathedral, within walking distance of dozens of restaurants. 2 minutes walk from the newly re-furbished front. The hotel is very Maderian in style and if you want to feel you are really in Maderia, rather than a modern hotel anywhere, then this is perfect for you. There are only 2 rooms with balconies. Rooms 401 and 402 but there is an additional charge for these of Euros 10 -15 per night. The cost per night was around £40 for 2 people in November. There is a communal balcony and lounge area on the top floor. Unfortunately smoking is allowed in all rooms and this may put people off.The rooms were very clean but because of the heavy furniture they were rather dark. Cool in the hot weather but a bit claustrophobic. Each day the room was cleaned thoroughly. Every two days the bedsheets were changed. The towels were fresh every day. They were rather old but clean if a little thin. The shower curtain was also changed regularly. The rate includes breakfast. This is usually juices, cereals, breads and some hot bacon, eggs and sausages. Not five star by any means but very acceptable. The staff on reception spoke good English and were very helpful. The hotel has FREE parking for about 6 cars. This is a good 10 minutes walk from the hotel and took us rather a while to find. There is a one-way system in Funchal and that combined with roadworks made life difficult. To be honest, if you are fit, a car is not needed. Funchal is quite small to get around. There is a good local bus service and tours for further afield. The cable car is worth using, if your don't mind the heights.

My wife and I stayed at the Albergaria Catedral for almost one full week during our honeymoon. The hotel is a little shabby, but retains a great charm. The price was exceedingly attractive for us because we were traveling in the off season in early November. The staff was very helpful from the first day, and made sure we had "the best room" in the place for our honeymoon. we stayed on the fifth floor and had a great view of a Funchal back street from our private balcony. The fifth floor also features a large common sitting area with books and a TV, as well as a large patio that faces the cathedral, harbor, and busy street below. A truly fantastic place to relax, people watch, and enjoy a Coral beer or seven. A market operates out of the first floor of the building, making it very convenient to buy snacks and drinks. Wifi is also provided, but only in the lobby area.
This hotel is in a central location in the city, giving you access to anything you want to do. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling on a budget who wants to best possible access to Funchal.

Based on price and location, I arrived at this hotel with friends on our first viist to the island. A narrow entrance leading to a set of stairs taking to the next floor for reception is never a good sign in my books. Checking the first 3 rooms took a little over 30 minutes and took over 30 more minutes for the 4th. I had to go up and down more than 3 times complaining that the card doesn't open the door before the receptionist decided to show me how to use a hotel card. When he failed to use the card, only then did he realize that the door itself has been locked mechanically by the housekeeping staff. Then he got the master key and opened the door for me to enter. Not a very good start.
The hotel has no internet access in the rooms contrary to their advertisement. Having some business to run and emails to keep up with, this was not good news. Instead of getting an apology this dragged into a long saga. Hearing trickling water in a shower in the next room from time to time meant the walls were too thin. A wooden frame above the bed to house electrical wiring gathers all kinds of dirt that can't be cleaned. Even worse, there has been a couple of exposed wires chopped without any insulation at all. This is very dangerous and totally unacceptable. Due to an error in their credit card machine, my card was tried 3 or 4 times before they figured out there was an error on their side. Luckily there was a communication error from their side and hence my card was not blocked as a result of this. I had to go downstairs to withdraw the amount in cash using the same card from an ATM which worked like a charm. In a proper hotel, I wouldn't need to do something like this.
Rooms are on the smaller side, 2 single beds loosely pushed together, and a tiny little safe that requires a key was found in the cupboard. Overall this hotel is all about location and nothing else. I have seen far better hotels in the city and around the same area as well. I am very disappointed that we have booked in a hotel that is an ok 3* hotel advertising itself as a 4* hotel. It is definitely not a 4* hotel and the way of resolving issues with them has been very slow.

I only had a short time in Funchal and wanted a character hotel in the Centre rather than somewhere in the concrete complex further away...
The location was perfect for me - right in the heart of the Centre, opposite the Cathedral and literally just around the corner from restaurants and shops. The seafront is about seven minutes walk away.
I had paid to upgrade to a balcony room, and my room on the fifth floor looked out over rooftops. Sadly the weather wasn’t good enough to enjoy my balcony but I can’t blame the hotel for that! Being on the fifth floor, there was only one other room and I never heard any noise either from that room or from traffic passing the front of the building.
The room and bathroom were a good size with a powerful shower, a fridge, plenty of towels and a hairdryer. I remember noticing that there were plenty of hangers. The only thing missing for me was tea-making facilities - I knew they hadn’t been advertised as a room feature, but I would have really appreciated a cup of tea! My room was kept very clean and wifi was fine. The communal area on the fifth floor was comfortable, with nice views of the Cathedral area and, although it got quite busy late evening, I never heard anything from my room.
Breakfast had a selection of items but, although some of the hot items - scrambled egg and sausage - were hot, the bacon was cold.
Customer service was variable - from the younger lady being super-pleasant and helpful when I checked-in to being told off by somebody else for not using the coffee machine properly! As a solo traveller I like to pay my hotel bills in cash as soon as possible as I am always a bit nervous about possible problems with my credit card and, because I travel on a budget, I like to know that the rest of my money is spending money - this has never been a problem before but, when I tried to do this, it seemed to be a big inconvenience. It may just have been a language barrier but I felt quite awkward. Storing my luggage for a few hours on my last morning was no problem but arranging a shuttle to the airport was a bit of a challenge, even though the hotel had e-mailed me offering this service! Again, it may have been a language issue.
On the whole I enjoyed my stay - for value and location I would stay here again.

My husband and I came here to be near to the Ferry Port as we would have travelled to Porto Santo after few days. The hotel has a great location right in the center of Funchal, just a short nice walk from the Old Town, the Mercado de labradores and restaurants and cafés. The price is absolutely convenient, although the rooms look a bit old, but for the price you pay the hotel is very good. Hosts are friendly and helpful!
