Detailed Reviews
My wife and I have just spent a month in this hotel which is located in a great part of Funchal. It is in a traditional style and not one of the concrete blocks found in other parts of the city and therefore has more character than most others we went in during our holiday. The surrounding gardens are wonderful and so well maintained. Staff are welcoming, helpful and above all very friendly and are always there to offer advice if needed. The restaurant was always busy at breakfast time, particularly over Christmas and New Year, but the ever attentive staff would always find a spot even relaying a table if necessary. There was never a shortage of food, either choice or quantity. We had 2 birthdays and a Wedding Anniversary during our time there and on each occasion - as did others we saw - received a (delicious!) chocolate cake and some bubbly when we walked in for breakfast, such a nice and thoughtful start to the day. We also had 6 evening meals there and on each occasion were pleased by the buffet choice (particularly lovely salads) and fish/meat on offer. Our room (6604) had a wonderful view across one of the swimming pools to the surrounding hillside which twinkled every evening with domestic lighting. My wife used the Spa for treatments on 4 occasions and was delighted each time and we also noted that the pools were checked daily for water quality. I won't post pictures because I could not improve on those on the website which do reflect truly the quality and cleanliness of the whole hotel and its gardens. The reason for my rating of "Very Good" and not "Excellent"? The WiFi needs improvement (forever fluctuating between on and off in the room - we had better quality WiFi in the restaurants we visited) and the Winter Garden (central entertainment area) was I'm afraid cold with through draughts which made it pretty unwelcoming. Apart from these 2 "inconveniences" I can say that we had a lovely month in a lovely hotel in a lovely country.

We stayed in one of the apartments and it was excelente. Staff are very polite and the housekeeping service is good however I would recommend less room service as no need for servicing every day. The indoor pool is small but great. The apartment has a small kitchen which is handy to do quick cooking.
If you are hiring a car unfortunately the parking is chargeable €6 a day which is the only downside but understandable due to the small car park, we left the car at night time in the blue lines parking at used the paying machine that counts for the next day so no need to wake up early to remove the car 2 hours for 1,50€.
Thank you for such a pleasant stay.

The resort is pretty good. Although it's a large, sprawling resort, it never seemed crowded. Always plenty of loungers round the pool, but (as usual) the prime spots go early! And the resort was usually pretty quiet. There was a bit of noise round the pools during the day as you would expect, but no riotous parties at night!. Staff were all friendly and usually efficient. Common areas are all clean and well maintained
Good quality accommodation with good quality fixtures and fittings. We were in a 2 bedroomed apartment which could accommodate 6 and roomy for 4, apart from the balcony which was on the small side. The apartment was well equipped with kitchen stuff for simple cooking. Oven & hob, toaster, kettle, microwave, juicer, coffee maker. No dishwasher. Bed was comfy, OK for me but a bit firm for my wife.
Housekeeping came in most days, sometimes just to do a quick service, make beds, change towels, empty bins. The towels may have been fluffy at one time but that was a while ago.
Air conditioning in our apartment, and all apartments I believe, didn't do too much except make noise. (End of July 2022) We had a couple of different stories from reception and guest relations but apparently they await the arrival of a substantial piece of equipment from mainland Portugal to fix the issue in their centralised air conditioning system. They had no idea when this piece of equipment was expected to arrive nor were able to give any update during our weeks stay... When we spoke to the resort about it, there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency in dealing with this issue.
Our apartment was on a low floor and right in the gardens, so we didn't want to open windows and attract any wildlife. This and pretty well no air conditioning made the apartment uncomfortably warm at night, making sleep difficult. The low floor also afforded little in the way of view.
The resort offer various meals packages for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I believe that the resort restaurants are good, but we didn't eat in the hotel simply because there are oodles of excellent options, from € to € € € € €, within a short stroll or taxi ride of the resort. I understand that many like the idea of meal packages, but I always enjoy a stroll in the evening to find a nice restaurant, and there are plenty of great restaurants in Funchal.
The resort also sports a hairdresser and Day Spa, if you need that sort of thing while on holiday.

We stayed at the Hotel Mirima over New Year week 19/2020 which was clean but the room was tired and in need of a refurb.
When we arrived we where told we had to pay 65 euros when we asked why we where told it was to cover laundering the pool towels which we did not use and use of the safe in the room.....a rip off.

As we struggle to ever find a suitable timeshare property in summer months we were so pleased to have been able to book Pestana Miramar. We have waited 2 years since it was originally booked due to Covid restrictions, and it was worth the wait. We had a 2 bedroom apartment despite there only being 2 of us but as we had the points we felt the extra bathroom was worth spending them. We were in room 7609 and our balcony overlooked the pool, the sun was on it in the morning but not in the afternoon. Housekeeping came in everyday to make the beds and empty the bins and the towels were changed once during our week.
We are both 64 and the walk into town was done virtually every day and took approx.30 minutes. We had purchased the Hop on hop off yellow bus tickets on line before we arrived and hadn't realised there was a stop opposite the hotel going into town, and coming back out just a short walk around the corner.
There is a small supermarket minutes away for the basics and a lovely restaurant we ate in twice. Having said that there are so many lovely restaurants in Funchal especially in town, we only used the kitchen are for tea and coffee and making some toast a couple of mornings.
Definitely will return if we can get availability again, Madeira is a beautiful island..

This hotel was clearly once a grand lady, alas this has long faded. There is no way this hotel is four stars, let me explain why: On our first night, I found the light above the balcony was VERY BRIGHT, so called to ask for the light to be disabled. My call was transferred to four different people, and when I spoke to the last man, I knew he was literally blowing me off. I waited two days, still the bright light on the balcony at night. I finally asked the lady at reception if my request was going to be met - I even offered to remove the light myself if someone gave me a ladder and screwdriver! The lady at reception told me it was too much trouble to remove the bright light! I have to admit that I did not expect such a response, especially when Pestana asked my wife and I to renew our Vacation Club, for a considerable amount of money! Ten minutes later, maintenance removed the bulb… It took the maintenance man longer to travel to my room than it did to remove a light bulb! Yet it was too much trouble?
I understand the hotel was moth-balled during the Covid restrictions and was told there had been a top to tail cleaning process. During our stay, my wife dropped some coins under the bed in our room… the floor was filthy! This is hardly four star!
We use a laundry service that is located in one of the nearby shopping centres. We were told the service would return our laundry, but it didn’t show up. The next day, we contacted the laundry service and discovered the laundry was dropped off at reception, as promised. Sadly, reception never told us our laundry arrived and it sat there overnight! Not what one would expect of a so called four star hotel.
Enough of the negative! This was not our first stay at this hotel and our room view was superb, great view of the pool and nice view into Funchal Harbour, handy to see when cruise ships are in town, so we could avoid Funchal centre! The staff manning the swimming pool were first class and nothing was too much trouble! (I kinda wished I had asked them to remove the light bulb over the balcony!)
The bar staff at Village and this hotel are world class, certainly worthy of four star.
It seems that Pestana standards have really dropped overall, and am relieved that our Vacation Club points will soon run out. We do have a choice in hotels that will offer a higher level of standard and thanks to Pestana’s “ too much trouble” standard of service, we will make new discoveries!

4 of us have recently returned from an 11 night stay for new year at the Pestana Miramar Funchal half board this is our 5th stay in Funchal firstly this is NOT a 4 star hotel 2 star possibly 3 star at most.
If you like old fashioned village style hotels then you might like this one it is very difficult to find your way as it is split in so many different levels you are supposed to get a proper map on arrival which would have helped we only found out about this on our last day as you can tell we did not get one, it is always cold in the communal areas if you want read, the safe is the smallest I have ever seen and you cannot get much in it for this you have to pay 2.5 euros per day to rent the lock not electronic which you do not get back you also have to pay 10 euros per week to hire towel robes unbelievable.
The food is very poor and never hot there is very little choice and they run out of things and no alternative is provided the breakfast opens at 7.00am but you cannot get an omelette until 8.00am? the baked beans are so hard you cannot eat them the evening meal we tried for 3 to 4 days hoping it would improve it went worse we then ate out every night there are plenty of nice inexpensive places to eat close by if you turn left out of the hotel across the bridge you have pub No 2 carry on Moynihans Irish Bar next to it the Grill at Istanbul all do excellent food koftas at the grill excellent.
The staff are excellent with the exception of one lady in the restaurant we could not get her name as the badges are so small and we didn’t like talking to her she is the rudest person we have ever come across in a hotel, Fabio, Diogo and Roberto Diaz were excellent Roberto asked us at breakfast on the last day why we had gone half board but not used it we told him he went away told the management he came back and said when we finished breakfast they would like to speak to us about it the lady who supervises the buffet and Micaela Nunes Guest service Manager were there they just said bye nothing else not interested Roberto was the only one who showed an interest.
We love Madeira and will return but we will not return to this hotel if you do choose to stay in this hotel go bed and breakfast as you will be wasting your money otherwise.

We have just returned from a week staying at The Pestana Miramar The location of this hotel is excellent, so central for everything Funchal has to offer. However, don't be fooled by the name, your balcony is very unlikely to have a sea view and w,still, will probably get no sun. It seems that most of these rooms are timeshare or the like and therefore
the rooms available for holidays are overlooking the pool and gardens and maybe a view towards the hills. The pool itself is lovely but unheated so was sadly too cold for swimming in January. Despite loving where the hotel is we will not be returning

The rooms weren't cleaned between occupancies. I found hairs in the bathroom along with a soiled towel, when I arrived. Makes one wonder whether the sheets had been washed. The balcony: rails, table and chairs weren't clean. The rooms were serviced everyday, not cleaned. One day I asked the receptionist whether the receptionist would send someone to clean. A maid came, but the maid wasn't interested in cleaning. She showed me around instead, and when I came back, the bathroom was the same as it was before.
There were no teas and coffees in the room. I had to go out shopping to get some. I prefer to have a cuppa in my room on arrival. There were no bathroom complementaries, no hand-sanitisers, no window blackouts. The balcony light shone in at night, reflected by a mirror. (On a timer.) The bathroom light was extremely bright. 2 canisters of soap-shampoo were attached to the wall, 1 high on the wall, not suitable for a bather in the bathtub; the other far from the basin.
I had ordered a picnic one evening for the next day, but wasn't given it until late afternoon. The bread was stale, so had to give the picnic back. And get a refund. Had been told that this picnic would be brought to my room same evening as ordered. The only reason I got it at all was I had kept asking for it.
TA: "microwave in rooms, hand sanitisers public areas, marked floors for Covid, masks required for guests not fully vaccinated, and for all in public places". Poppycock. No hand sanitisers and masks anywhere to be seen. No questions about Covid vaccination. No evidence that this hotel cared anything about Covid. Only evidence to the contrary. Many hands on the buffet tongs, in the crowded buffets. TA must have been talking about somewhere else.

We enjoyed a nice holiday at the Pestana Miramar and would certainly return to this resort in the future. Our accommodation was lovely with views out to the harbour and the sea and also over the pool, trees and flowers. The resort was operated and maintained by very dedicated, professional staff who were always friendly, helpful and had a smile. The rooms, the pools and the garden areas were clean, tidy and superbly kept. The food and drink in the A Vila buffet restaurant was particularly enjoyable - a good selection at both breakfast and dinner and plenty of it! The resort was located in a good position, not far from the centre of Funchal or from the harbour. We would definitely recommend this resort to others looking to visit Madeira.
