A great location by the sea away from the centre of Funchal, not much to do close by but a free shuttle bus to Funchal during the day and taxis were not too pricey. All rooms have a sea view and we were over the gardens and enjoyed some lovely sunset views. Our second floor room was comfortable and serviced daily. The reception staff were efficient and welcoming on arrival. The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was generally good and value for money considering the price we paid.The pool was a bit chilly but we did swim a couple of times and also used the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Don't expect too much from the entertainment and you won't be disappointed;-)

We booked with First Choice as an all inclusive package and were pleasantly surprised with how nice this hotel actually is. Rooms are large and overlook the sea, so some fantastic sunsets, but the background noise of the waves may be off-putting for some. Everywhere in the hotel was spotlessly clean, rooms cleaned daily, pool towels were an additional bonus and all staff we encountered were very pleasant, cheerful and helpful. We made use of the free shuttle bus into Funchal and also the regular bus services reached via a very steep climb via steps and slope to the main road, but then this is Madeira and there are steep climbs everywhere. The town centre is about 40 minutes walk from Ocean Bay and you can also pick up a coastal board walk into Camara de Lobos within about 100m of the hotel. A really nice, relaxing holiday, thank you!

We booked this holiday 8 days prior to travelling and as such we were going with a very open mind. We arrived at 20:30 on the Monday evening and were told by the staff on Reception to go into the restaurant immediately as it was closing in 30 minutes. That done we were checked in within 5 minutes. The location of the hotel is perfect, right on the sea front, but unfortunately the walkway and tunnel allowing you to walk into Funchal town was destroyed by storms a couple of years ago. Fortunately, the hotel did lay on a free shuttle bus 6 or 8 times a day, which was a God send. The food was generally quite acceptable and, for a change, quite hot, although sometimes there was not a lot of choice, especially in the sweet department. Unfortunately the evening entertainment was, in my mind, at the lower end of the spectrum. Most started at around 20:00 and finished about 23:00 but when there was local dancers on they finished at 21:15 or before - not good when on of the nights was a Saturday (a main night out). The rooms are very clean and comfortable and are all sea facing so you don't end up like us, normally, overlooking the car park. However, of you're not used to noise at night, the sea will possibly keep you awake as it pounds the rocky beach. I can honestly say I have never found such friendly staff in any hotel I have stayed in, they were brilliant. Would I stay at this hotel again? Probably not but is only due to the location. The hotel in general was value for money.

This was our 5th stay at the hotel and we love it.
1. The rooms all have the most fantastic sea view and, as the hotel is right on the sea shore, you hear the waves. 2. The rooms are large and well equipped (kettle, fridge, tea pot etc) and the sea air flows right through as the bathroom window opens to the back of hotel (which is also attractive, a corridor open towards a sheer rock face covered with plants, sometimes scented). 3. The pool area includes jacuzzi and sauna (some hotels charge for the sauna). 4. The meals contain plenty of choice – the trick is NOT to eat too much and to be selective, as 3 full meals a day are included- in fact you could eat and drink for 15 hours a day, so be careful! Lots of salads and not too many maracuja liqueurs and pina coladas! Fantastic value of course. If you want to spend over €30 an evening per person eating, go somewhere else! 5. There is a relaxed feel to the hotel, very informal. You don’t feel you are walking on egg shells, as in some places, where they have lots of rules and charge for everything. When we came with kids / teenagers they too loved the informality. 6. Great location to walk along the sea (not high above it) – and also for buses to the central and Western part of the island without having to go to the centre 1st.
We would come back here every time when we can afford to come to Madeira.

We stayed at this hotel from 24th of August till the 1st of September, I have to say this was an amazing holiday and this hotel was definitely the best choice. The food is great, big variety, very fresh and healthy, we loved to eat outside next to the edge, so we could watch the lizards running around. The nature and plants around the hotel are incredibly gorgeous, with beautiful flowers and chunky aloe veras, if plants and flowers are your thing then you will definitely like it. The pebble beach is also very good, we found some patches with the black sand, or sometimes just put the towels on the stones, no problem at all. The sea its very wavy and I never had a chance to swim because of the strong waves, also special shoes are recommended, I used my old pair of toms and that did the trick ;) The sea view from the rooms is beautiful, and we liked to fall asleep listening to the waves. Our room was on the 5th floor, and we were happy with everything what was in the room. The beds were extremely comfortable for us, but if you don't like firm mattresses that probably wouldn't be great choice for you. The pool and sunbeds were great, we went there few times but as we preferred to be in the beach we didn't spend much time at the pool. There are 2 bus stops near by - one is on the main Estrada monumental road, but you need to climb the stairs and it may be a bit of a challenge, we found it no problem. Another bus stop is through the tunnel, once you pass it and a bit of more stairs the bus stop is right there. The bus no.2 goes to the city centre frequently. The ticket price to buy on bus is 1.95€, or you can get a giro card and top it up. Pretty simple. The location of the hotel in general is great, as if you don't want to take bus to go to the city centre, you can walk 15 mins to the nearest big shopping centre Forum Madeira, which has absolutely everything. We were really happy on our holiday and said many times that we couldn't choose better hotel. It may not be suitable for people, who don't like long walks or climbing stairs though ;)

Although I have visited this hotel for many years, this was the first time my family had joined me for my final week in order to celebrate two of our birthdays. As usual, the welcome was warm and friendly, with all the staff doing their very best to make the holiday special. Their thoughtfulness goes far beyond anything I have experienced in other hotels, and the hotel itself is always comfortable, with a very high standard of cleanliness. Two of our party were vegetarian, one had a nut allergy and another required soya milk. All of these options were well catered for without any fuss. The food choices were varied and perhaps breakfast was the highlight with an amazing selection of freshly baked breads, rolls and pastries in addition to fresh fruit, cold meats, cheese, cereals and of course the hot buffet. The youngest grandchild was delighted to find he could help himself to pancakes and a popular chocolate hazelnut spread! Rooms on the 7th floor have been refurbished and have air-conditioning and, of course, the wonderful views of the Atlantic enjoyed by all the upper floors. If you go, you will be well looked after by an amazing staff and I must mention particularly Mariana, Miguel, Sonia and Florentina.

Booked with TUI for family week away and was really pleased nice big rooms cleaned daily during your visit to a very high standard.Definatly worth going to wellcome visit and booking a few excursions we really enjoyed the West Island trip starts off at the second highest sky deck in the world great views through glass floor.You see so much on this trip and the tour guide was very good on history and information.Stopped for lunch in a great resturant where you can take a dip in the many large rock pools.Hotel staff from cleaners waiting staff and receptionist were so polite and helpful it really added to our stay to this lovely island.We was lucky as carnaval started the week we was here it was amazing procession of decorated floats and people dancing and singing great atmosphere. All the rooms look over the sea we loved sitting on the balcony listening to the sea. A week is not long enough to see the many attractions on this island we will definitely come back and would stay here again there is also a free bus service that runs between the Pestana hotels and it is very useful to get you too the local shops or into Funchal itself you can walk to local shops but its very steep roads on most of the Island. The basket taboggan and cable car are well worth doing also the 4 x 4 vineyard tour and winetasting experience.

Set on the beech, all rooms face the sea. The beach is a pebble beach, although there are sandy places. The rooms are good, quiet, comfy and clean. All rooms have a balcony and if you leave your door open, the breaking waves lull you to sleep. The team are all friendly and helpful. The hotel is all inclusive. There is lots of choice and the drinks flow as much as you want. Even the wine is ok. There is a gym, spa and outdoor pool, with only a massage incurring a fee. For a relaxing holiday with a beautiful garden and reasonable facilities, this is the place for you. There is a regular free bus into Funchal and it’s possible to walk to Camera De Lobos. The only drawback is the tunnel that links a walk into Funchal is closed, so the only way out if you want to go out and about is a steep walk or the free bus, unless you walk away from Funchal. We would recommend this as a place to stay for a relaxing break.

Before arriving (in a small group) we made a couple of requests to the hotel and they accomodated us without fuss in a professional manner, for that we are gratefull. The hotel is situated directly on the beach at Praia Formosa, it is a pebble beach not suited to sunbathing (there are plenty of sunbeds in the hotel gardens) but beautiful nonetheless. All the rooms face the sea and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach is awesome. Our room was fine (the tv's are a bit dated but we had netflix on our tablet so all was good) with a lovely balcony and a little kitchenette. The food was plentiful, varied and really quite good, there were several choices of hot mains with pasta and lots of fresh salad every day, (oh and the bread at breakfast was hot and fresh every day!) They have Coral beer on draught, which is good, the wine and Sangria was good, they had an acceptable gin and tonic but the cocktails were so so. The hotel is a little way out of Funchal and there is not much around it but there is a free shuttle into Funchal almost hourly, which we used on a few days, as an alternative taxis are cheap though. Overal the place exceeded our expectations, ALL the staff were friendly, efficient and polite, Manuella? in the rerstaurant deserves a special mention for being outstanding in looking after us though. I've not been disappointed in any of the Pestana hotels we've stayed at and we would return to this one without hesitation. Thanks for making our holiday great!!

Another return visit and there is nothing negative to say about the hotel. Welcoming, hard working, pleasant staff and everything spotlessly clean. Good meals with wonderful freshly baked bread at breakfast time and a healthy selection of hot and cold food always provided. The coastline in front of the hotel is made up of large stones and is not a beach as some people expect. There is a beach of black volcanic sand a short distance along the footpath to Camara de Lobos. The tunnel leading from the beach to the Funchal pathway is unfortunately closed for safety reasons and this creates a detour of about a mile by the road, up the hill, so best to make use of the convenient shuttle bus, even to go as far as the next hotel and walk to Funchal from there if that is what you want to do. Nobody goes to a lovely location to sit and watch TV so don't be disappointed to find BBC News 24 might be the only channel you can get in English. One downside comment is not to do with the hotel but with some of the guests who use it! I have never encountered so many people pushing their way into the buffet as if the food was about to run out or queue-jumping to get on (or off!) the shuttle bus! Good manners cost nothing and courtesy goes a long way! We stayed from 21st to 28th February and will return. Thank you all staff!

There is a lift outside of the hotel at the entrance to the garden leading up to the front door. This lift is on the left slightly hidden and takes you up fairly high to the street level above. I do not know if it is to the sister hotel but again you could ask the hotel by phone?
There is a bus stop situated around the bend after walking out of the hotel entrance up a step hill. I believe it is route 43 from memory. Hope this helps.

Sorry. I have no idea. We had a standard room with balcony. That said you can obtain hot drinks 24/7 from the dining room where they have drinks machines. Failing that ring the hotel and just ask them.
There are more places to choose from in the Funchal area.
