The room double bed and a small TV with good English selection of channels including BBC and CNN. No AC nor Fridge. The bathroom was good size with running hot water and shower with good pressure. Our room had a balcony which was handy.
The breakfast was very basic. A supermarket located just nearby.
When arriving at Funchal airport there is a aerobus you can catch to your hotel for 5 Euro one way or 8 Euro return. It is located just outside on your right as you come out of the airport. It stops within distance of your hotel. Just pay the driver and tell him your hotel's name name and he will shout out when your stop comes. He will also give you directions to the hotel. I had no problem with the bus as I followed another fellow Tripadvisor reviewer's advise.
The hotel reception can also arrange Madeira minibus tours for you which we thoroughly enjoyed. They pick you up from the hotel. These tours are with Flora Travel.
You must do Cable car trip to Monte and a ride on Toboggan (famous baskets) from outside the church of Our Lady of Monte. It is worth the experience.
The hotel is recommended for it location, value and the friendly staffs. Only downside is that the breakfast staffs are not so friendly or welcoming.
I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel and would go back again
Room was all ready when we arrived including the cot which had been made up with sheets and blanket.
Good sized bathroom which featured a bath and shower hose.. excellent temperature and water pressure.
There was also a small TV with a good selection of channels.
Breakfast was basic as others have said... bread rolls with bread and cheese, cornflakes, coffee & orange squash. There were also yoghurts and occasionally a couple of croissants turned up! There is a little cafe adjoining the restaurant and on a couple of days we purchased a nicer coffee and a few extra food items. Food and drink were very cheap in there.. so for a few extra euros you could add a few items to your breakfast.
There is also a small garage attached to the hotel with 3 parking spaces. They sometimes allow a couple of cars to park in the entrance too. You have to leave your keys with reception and if someone needs to get out, they will move the car for you. It has a very tight entrance with a bend in the middle, but we had a large estate car and still managed to get in and out. It's not too bad once you've done it once! Alternatively you have to pay for on street parking nearby which is about €2 every two hours (2 hours maximum at a time)
The hotel is nice and close to the town... about a 10 minute walk down to the old town and there is a supermark 200 yard from the hotel which is convenient.
In need of some refurbishment
Balconies in most rooms, no air-con wouldn't want to stay here in summer.
Nice roof terraces, excellent view of fireworks at NYE. Roof lounge OK (WIFI) but furniture past its best.
Bathroom with bath, bidet and shaver socket.
Room compact and old fashioned, TV. Beds OK.
Lift
Breakfast rudimentary. Cereal (cornflakes), coffee, bread, cheese, ham. No hot stuff.
Bathroom towels are approaching threadbare.
Snack bar attached with WIFI.
Lighting (all over) was terrible, what probably were adequate lights have been 'updated' to florescent and the effect is terrible.
Cleaning excellent, cleaners were omnipresent and did a splendid job considering what they had to work with.
Staff helpful
Excellent value for money with central location for Funchal.
Another great plus is the location. It's very central, in the old town. A large supermarket is at 5 mins on foot and all major bus stops on the avenida do mar and the cable car are at walking distance (about 10 mins).
Definitely recommended.
There is a restaurant attached but I only took breakfast there. As other reviews point out the breakfast is simple. You help yourself from a selection of orange juice, coffee, bread rolls, cheese, meat and yogurts.
There is a lounge up on the 5th floor that has free wifi, the sofa's and chairs are a little tired, some of them have plywood beneath the cushions because the springs are past it, so it's probably not an area where you're going to want to sit for hours, but to catch up with your emails for free, it's fine. There is also space on the roof with garden furniture, I took a look but the weather wasn't really good enough for sunbathing the week I was there.
The rooms are a decent size, basic but comfortable, they have a TV but no tea, coffee, radio etc. The bathroom was also a decent size, that even had a bidet. The shower was not particularly impressive to look at but the temperature was stable and the water pressure was strong, so functionally it exceeded my initial expectations.
But, the best bit - for me - was the balcony. I was in room 106 - and the balcony was circa 15Sq Metres. With a table and chairs an plenty of space. Looking up, the balconies on the higher floors we much smaller, say 4-5Sq Metres. From the edge of the balcony, I could pickup the free wifi from the lounge on the 5th floor - so that was convenient. This room is at the back of the hotel which backs onto other restaurants and you are in the heart of the town, so there can be some noise. It was Feb and I could keep the door shut, so it wasn't a problem for me. But at the height of summer, with no air conditioning, you may need the door open and it could be a problem for some people, so keep that in mind,.
If you also keep in mind that this is a simple hotel, that is very reasonably priced I think you can have a perfectly pleasant stay here. I did. If you're visiting Madeira and plan to get out each day and do things, then Hotel Sirius is a great base. But if the hotel forms part of your holiday experience and you want to lounge by a pool and have waiters fetch you G&Ts this is not the place for you.
Personally, if the price remains reasonable, I'd be hard pushed justifying ever staying anywhere else. ( I would give 10 stars for value)
