The room was quite dark and we could hear everything outside the house. The beds were loud (every movement made the coil springs go mad) and hard. The breakfast was okay. The Hotel itself was good located and near the city centre. We're still not going there again.

The hotel is fairly basic but nice and very close to town. Our initial reaction on our arrival was not very good but the staff at reception soon put us to ease. We didn't like the initial room allocated to us so I went back to reception for other options and I was offered further two choices. They were only able to give us choices because we arrived on Wednesday when more rooms were unoccupied.
The room double bed and a small TV with good English selection of channels including BBC and CNN. No AC nor Fridge. The bathroom was good size with running hot water and shower with good pressure. Our room had a balcony which was handy.
The breakfast was very basic. A supermarket located just nearby.
When arriving at Funchal airport there is a aerobus you can catch to your hotel for 5 Euro one way or 8 Euro return. It is located just outside on your right as you come out of the airport. It stops within distance of your hotel. Just pay the driver and tell him your hotel's name name and he will shout out when your stop comes. He will also give you directions to the hotel. I had no problem with the bus as I followed another fellow Tripadvisor reviewer's advise.
The hotel reception can also arrange Madeira minibus tours for you which we thoroughly enjoyed. They pick you up from the hotel. These tours are with Flora Travel.
You must do Cable car trip to Monte and a ride on Toboggan (famous baskets) from outside the church of Our Lady of Monte. It is worth the experience.
The hotel is recommended for it location, value and the friendly staffs. Only downside is that the breakfast staffs are not so friendly or welcoming.

Excellent location. Airport shuttle bus, city centre, market, restaurants and shops are in 5-8mins walking distance. Breakfast buffet is decent, filling for starting the day with. Roof lounge is comfy and accommodating but enterieur may need refreshing. Roof terrace is great and furnished with chairs and sunbeds. Room is clean and with good size of balcony(at least those at the entrance front, with view to the street and hills behind)
I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel and would go back again

A very wonderful time I had at Hotel Sirius. I stayed there for 10 day's this month, I would definitely recommend Hotel Sirius to everyone. I had a very nice Ensuite room with a balcony, My room was cleaned every day, The Hotel as a very nice restaurant attached to it where I eat every night, The Hotel is central to everything and only 5 minute's walk to the promenade.. The staff on reception where always there and very helpful when I needed information about tourist attractions and working out when and where I needed to get public transport, A special thanks I must give to Bianca on reception because when I went to check in I had a problem with my credit card that She sorted out. Looking forward to staying at Hotel Sirius again and hoping it will be in September. Stephen

We arrived in our room which we thought was ok for backpackers (not quite what we hoped for from the pictures and reviews, I'll put in some pictures) and clean enough, but the bed was horrible. It was so hard I could not sleep, trying to find a good position that would not hurt my bones. The door to the hallway did not keep the many sounds out of our room unfortunately, and when I finally got to sleep from pure exhaustion we missed the breakfast which was until ten, so I cannot comment on that. We requested another bed, and the people at the reception (although none spoke much English) were ok with us checking other rooms to see if the bed was to our liking. We saw three rooms in total, and none were refurbished or looked any better. The furniture and bathrooms are old and worn. We ended up on the first floor, where the wifi did not reach us. Also, the windows to the balcony did not close well so sound from the street is loud, especially in our room where we were next to a garage door opening and closing. All rooms did have a balcony which can be nice, but the roof terras was very nice, good view both into the mountains and towards the marina. I imagine watching fireworks here is very good. So if you are just looking for a cheap bed and good location in the middle of town, this could be your cup of tea.

We stayed at the Hotel Sirius for 5 days as some family stayed here last year and recommended it. As the other reviewers have said, the hotel is simple and fairly basic, but our room featured two good sized single beds (pushed together to make a double) plus ample room for a cot.

Room was all ready when we arrived including the cot which had been made up with sheets and blanket.

Good sized bathroom which featured a bath and shower hose.. excellent temperature and water pressure.

There was also a small TV with a good selection of channels.

Breakfast was basic as others have said... bread rolls with bread and cheese, cornflakes, coffee & orange squash. There were also yoghurts and occasionally a couple of croissants turned up! There is a little cafe adjoining the restaurant and on a couple of days we purchased a nicer coffee and a few extra food items. Food and drink were very cheap in there.. so for a few extra euros you could add a few items to your breakfast.

There is also a small garage attached to the hotel with 3 parking spaces. They sometimes allow a couple of cars to park in the entrance too. You have to leave your keys with reception and if someone needs to get out, they will move the car for you. It has a very tight entrance with a bend in the middle, but we had a large estate car and still managed to get in and out. It's not too bad once you've done it once! Alternatively you have to pay for on street parking nearby which is about €2 every two hours (2 hours maximum at a time)

The hotel is nice and close to the town... about a 10 minute walk down to the old town and there is a supermark 200 yard from the hotel which is convenient.

The Sirius hotel was clean and staff very friendly the breakfast was very poor as the choice was very limited to bread rolls processed cheese coffee and orange squash we did both have the three course meal the first night however once was enough very large chicken bones in the soup around 2 inch long so if you have children beware also the main course the salad came covered in insects and the sweet came from the window display which is used to show the menu to passing trade , thanks but no thanks , if eating out in Funchal it is wise to carry a full wallet and we did notice eating at the same restaurant on three separate nights and ordering the same meal always resulted in three different prices you have been warned it got to the stage I showed the manager the my previous nights bill to shame him , or do what we did walk away , the local coral beer is very nice and ranges in price from 2.10 euros a pint to a whopping 6.10 euros be warned .also do not panic and hire a car from the airport the buses are really cheap and once at hotel they can help with the car hire for you watch taxis always haggle I did and it works walk away if not there are huge numbers of taxis , also when arriving in Madeira as you leave the airport on your right you will see the coach pick up point all the hotels will be listed on the shelter just wait in line with everybody pay you 5 euros each the coach driver shouts a number out when he stops and soon as your number is called you get of no stress and no need to join the masses of people being ripped of hiring cars at the airport. The hotel will arrange tours for you this is a must they pick you up from the hotel at 9 am and you return at 5 pm worth every cent of the 29 euros per adult

Cheap and cheerful and doesn't try to be anything else.
In need of some refurbishment
Balconies in most rooms, no air-con wouldn't want to stay here in summer.
Nice roof terraces, excellent view of fireworks at NYE. Roof lounge OK (WIFI) but furniture past its best.
Bathroom with bath, bidet and shaver socket.
Room compact and old fashioned, TV. Beds OK.
Lift
Breakfast rudimentary. Cereal (cornflakes), coffee, bread, cheese, ham. No hot stuff.
Bathroom towels are approaching threadbare.
Snack bar attached with WIFI.
Lighting (all over) was terrible, what probably were adequate lights have been 'updated' to florescent and the effect is terrible.
Cleaning excellent, cleaners were omnipresent and did a splendid job considering what they had to work with.
Staff helpful
Excellent value for money with central location for Funchal.

I stayed 5 nights at Sirius hotel. Although rated 2 stars, it would most definitely deserve at least another star. It is very good value for money; my room was squeaky-clean, spacious and bright, with a lovely balcony. All toiletries provided, hair-drier, phone, cable tv; computer in the lobby for guests (1 euro per hour). the only downside was the very limited choice for breakfast -- but this is really a minor point, considering how little I paid and the already great facilities.

Another great plus is the location. It's very central, in the old town. A large supermarket is at 5 mins on foot and all major bus stops on the avenida do mar and the cable car are at walking distance (about 10 mins).

Definitely recommended.

This is a simple 2 star hotel. I've just spent a 4 nights there and thought it was great value for money.
There is a restaurant attached but I only took breakfast there. As other reviews point out the breakfast is simple. You help yourself from a selection of orange juice, coffee, bread rolls, cheese, meat and yogurts.

There is a lounge up on the 5th floor that has free wifi, the sofa's and chairs are a little tired, some of them have plywood beneath the cushions because the springs are past it, so it's probably not an area where you're going to want to sit for hours, but to catch up with your emails for free, it's fine. There is also space on the roof with garden furniture, I took a look but the weather wasn't really good enough for sunbathing the week I was there.

The rooms are a decent size, basic but comfortable, they have a TV but no tea, coffee, radio etc. The bathroom was also a decent size, that even had a bidet. The shower was not particularly impressive to look at but the temperature was stable and the water pressure was strong, so functionally it exceeded my initial expectations.

But, the best bit - for me - was the balcony. I was in room 106 - and the balcony was circa 15Sq Metres. With a table and chairs an plenty of space. Looking up, the balconies on the higher floors we much smaller, say 4-5Sq Metres. From the edge of the balcony, I could pickup the free wifi from the lounge on the 5th floor - so that was convenient. This room is at the back of the hotel which backs onto other restaurants and you are in the heart of the town, so there can be some noise. It was Feb and I could keep the door shut, so it wasn't a problem for me. But at the height of summer, with no air conditioning, you may need the door open and it could be a problem for some people, so keep that in mind,.

If you also keep in mind that this is a simple hotel, that is very reasonably priced I think you can have a perfectly pleasant stay here. I did. If you're visiting Madeira and plan to get out each day and do things, then Hotel Sirius is a great base. But if the hotel forms part of your holiday experience and you want to lounge by a pool and have waiters fetch you G&Ts this is not the place for you.

Personally, if the price remains reasonable, I'd be hard pushed justifying ever staying anywhere else. ( I would give 10 stars for value)

What's the best way to get to hotel Sirius from the airport
Answer from Sat599-2
31 contributions3 helpful votes
Ask for one at the back of the hotel away from the main road (Rue das Hortas) and one away from the lifts and the stairs(since noise will be evident here). I asked for a quiet room and got room 327. Little noise and plenty of sleep with only the surrounding neighboring community making little noise in the night.
