Detailed Reviews
Lovely location - right in the heart of the city of Funchal. Its an old building but the accomodation is comfortable enough with everything needed. The room on the top floor was big with plenty of space (nice view) and a good toilet/shower. Very clean. Old furniture, but does the job. I had a closet and a table, big bed. Plenty of space. Good WiFi and humble staff. Can't get better value for money than this in the location you get.
Disliked · The breakfast. Way to simple even for the budget price we pay for the room.
My room was facing a somewhat machine room on another building (!?) - difficult to sleep sometimes.

Stayed for a week on my first visit to Madeira.
I was a little unsure of what to expect, given the exceptionally low price of the accommodation. I needn't of worried.
Set right in the heart of Funchal (my room overlooked the cathedral tower) and only a couple of minutes walk to the seafront.
I was pleasantly surprised at the standard of the twin room. It was in excellent decorative order, had nice furniture, comfortable beds and was spotlessly clean. There was a TV with several English language channels, including a movie channel, if you want to watch tele? There can be some noise from the street at night. I never travel without earplugs so had no problems at all.
The shared bathroom was modern and clean with a shower that provided unlimited hot water. I didn't once find the shower/toilet occupied throughout my stay.
I really didn't expect of the breakfast at the low price paid. Again, I was surprised at the good standard of the breakfast room and the service. The breakfast is quite basic, with fruit juice, tea/coffee, bread rolls and jam served to your table. There were some people adding their own items to the breakfast, which is perfectly acceptable. Over a weeks stay it can lack varieity. For a short stay it's fine.
This hotel/Residencia is not perhaps for everyone. It's not a luxury hotel (I do those too), but it has a lot going for it. A great, comfortable base from where to explore the island. I will almost certaintly stay again on another visit.

I stayed there for 2 nights. It's on the back of Se cathedral. Rooms are on the 3rd and 4th floor - there is a lift, but small and you need to get up a couple of stairs in order to get into it. Location is the best deal here - it's In the middle of downtown of Funchal. I had a room with en-suite bathroom. Bathroom was pretty basic, no hair-dryer nor amenities and (as the room itself) showed its age. Room had quite old furniture and old, small TV set. No air-conditioning, but you can't expect it for the price you pay. Breakfasts were really basic - two dry buns, jam, coffee and orange juice. That's all you can get. Wi-fi didn't work or at least in my room there was no coverage at all. Fortunately in front of the cathedral there is a free wi-fi spot. If you look for a very basic, but cheap accommodation for a short stay in the centre of Funchal then this is the place. Money you save, you can spend in many restaurants around. No cards are accepted - only cash. Staff doesn't seem to speak English - or at least I didn't have a chance to find any person from the staff who spoke the language.

+1
Location 110% with extremely clean facilities throughout and a view over the Church/central plaza makes this accommodation option exquisite value. Note" however, that the breakfast is simple: orange juice/coffee/tea/2x bread rolls and jam. Would recommend for price paid.

Very clean and inexpensive. The room had 3 single beds but only me in it, so plenty of space. It was secure and comfortable. I found it perfect for my needs. IE mostly sleeping and getting cleaned up after diving. The cathedral bells may annoy some (right out side your window ). But, it is quite centrally located with a super Mercado 5 mins walk east and the sea front 2 mins walk south. I stayed 11 nights and paid 330 euros. Although breakfast was included, I hardly indulged. Just a coffee and a couple jam rolls on irregular days (which were very nice). All indications were good that there was more to be had.
Although situated on the 3rd and 4th floors the very functional lift makes getting to the room with luggage easy. It may take a couple of trips if you packed the kids however. Its not a big lift.
In conclusion I found this hotel an excellent base for a most enjoyable two weeks vacation. The only criticism I have is that without air on the room probably ought to have had a fan. I could see that many would find the heat and humidity a problem. I'm confident I would have been offered one if I'd have asked, but I worked in the tropics for a decade, so I kinda enjoyed it. Weird. Eh?
Good luck! And thanks to Pensao Astoria for a great stay!

It helps to know what a Residencia is to understand what is on offer. Astoria seems to be an amalgamation of four large old flats on the top two floors of an old block. The original rooms have been split up, many with basic en-suite. The rooms are simply furnished. It could not be more central and for this you pay about 30euros a night for two people including a basic but quite edible breakfast. It is astonishingly good value.
We found it clean and safe, there is a night porter. Remarkably for a residencia, it has a lift!
They had noted our requests on our advanced booking (we were arriving late in the evening) and were happy to look after our bags on the last day.

Cheap clean centrally located breakfast included well bread rolls jam coffee and juice all for less than £30 a double.
Absolutely great value for money would highly recommend. The staff were really helpful more pillows? no problem borrow glasses corkscrew? Nothing was too much trouble. If I ever go back would definitely stay there again.

Wonderful staff, wonderful location. rooms are a bit dated but comfortable and super clean, as well as the common bathroom - super clean! (they also have rooms with en-suite bathroom). Rooms have a flat tv and sheets and towels are changed everyday. Free wifi everywhere. Will certainly come back!

Due to flights, it was £140 cheaper for us to fly out to Funchal a day earlier than our hoel accommodation started so I booked us into the Pensao Astoria for our extra night. We arrived early and the cleaner who did not speak any English happily shoed us to our room (which had only just been vacated) so we could leave our bags and go out to explore the town. The room was basic, and the en-suite was limited to say the least. The shower head did not fit correctly into the attachment on the wall and it would have been possible to go to the toilet, wash your hair and brush your teeth at the same time had we wanted! There was no air-con (but I was not surprised). The room was simple but more than adequate for what we paid. We did not have breakfast in the morning, instead opting to sleep in as we had been up at 3am the previous morning. The only staff we encountered was the same cleaning lady in the morning, who was friendly and accommodating - even though we found it very hard to communicate with each other.
