Detailed Reviews
The reception staff were very welcoming and available 24hrs.
The studio apartment was fairly typical of this grade. It was clean and the bathroom was well fitted with plenty of hot water. The kitchenette was fairly basic and compact but perfectly useable. Comprised fridge with freezer compartment, two hot plates, microwave, kettle and sink. Some of the communal areas were a little tired in places but didn't detract from the friendly atmosphere. Excellent location for plenty of quality restaurants although the hotel restaurant was very good too. Perfect location for the centre of Funchal being just a 10 minute walk. Would love to return.

An option for unpretentious tourists when the hotel is a place to sleep after a busy day. A three-story building, rooms with built-in mini-kitchen. However, the warning is frightening that the guests are obliged to take care of the cleanliness of the dishes, and there were no dish detergents, and was no shampoo in the bathroom. There was soap and broken cork in the bathroom, so you had to plug with your heel. Repairs were carried out a long time ago. Among the advantages in the room are large mirrors and wide beds, a balcony with a table and chairs. The hotel has a small but tidy rooftop pool with free sunbeds, ocean view, a good location on a cozy street with plenty of cafes and bars. In the same building there is a restaurant with rather pleasant service.

Centrally located, so only a short walk into Funchal Centre. Good sized clean and comfy room with well stocked kitchenette (pans with lids that fit, new non-stick frying pan, corkscrew, plenty of cutlery, sharp knives etc) for those who like to cook an evening meal every now and then. Quiet fridge with working freezer drawer. Helpful friendly staff. Great roof terrace with pool. Nice little unpretentious restaurant next door. Sea view. Hot powerful shower. No aircon, but it was January, so that wasn't an issue. As 3* hotels go, its one of the better ones. No complaints from me. I'd definitely stay here again.

Some members of this "family" have no calling for the service industry.
They aggressively argue instead of fixing a problem.
1. I planned about a month stay in the hotel, had to prepay for one week and 90 Euros to trace my deposit to the hotel account, they could not "see".
2. When I arrived, tired straight from the airport I was told I had to pay for most of my stay at inflated prices. Soon I realized how bad the hotel was and wanted to move out. I called my bank and was told that the money was immediately withdrawn and that it would be very difficult to recover it. Basically, the hotel runs a scam on vulnerable guests.
3. The hotel falsely advertises “one room left” at high prices on the booking sites when it is almost empty.
4. This place is seriously infested with ants nesting in interior covered wall openings. They feed on improperly cleaned rooms and garbage cans. Spraying rooms with "organic" spray is a sham stopping the guest from moving out right away and allows charging longer for infested rooms.
5. After the pool went through noisy renovations, it was improperly run, too cold and unusable. Other hotels have functional unheated outside pools. The guests are not compensated for this or even informed about other available facilities.
In general : Look at the other negative opinions here. The hotel’s responses are beside the point or simply untrue. Instead of writing long emails they should get honest and spend time cleaning up the hotel.

Response from ApartImperatriz, General Manager at Aparthotel Imperatriz
Responded Jan 24, 2020
Dear Tripadvisor member, It looks like our internal communication wasn't enough to clear your doubts. I will not loose time "arguing" about issues that are not of your concern like hotel management, for example. I transcript my reply given to you on the 5th January 2020. "Thank you very much for your feedback of your recent stay at our hotel. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, as we strive to improve with each and every stay. Regarding your comment we would like to add some details that we think are important. Allow us to reply point by point to your not so positive review towards us: 1-As explained by our team and by me, the rate given was an average for the whole stay with a considerable discount. Nevertheless, you insisted to know rate per day. It was explained that rates were dynamic, according to demand and occupancy percentage. The hotel has its own policy towards its business and we refuse any outside demand to apply whenever they decide it should be the percentage of discount. What surprised us is that you have accepted all our conditions the time you have confirmed your reservation. The hotel being nearly empty part of the dates of your stay is normal this time of year, most of the hotels, including five stars take this low season period to do some light renovations. Your opinion towards this reveals lack of knowledge of how hotel businesses are in Madeira. 2-The hotel is not seriously infested by ants, let’s make that clear, mrs ****. Again lack of knowledge. The spray used is a biological one and leaves no carcinogenic residue for the guests. We do suffer surprise inspections from Tourism authorities several times a year and pest control is one of the points. If we would not respect it, for sure the hotel were not be open. From what we could notice, according with your photos is that you have left an open package with cake crumbs, taking no personal measures to avoid ants to “molest” you. You were simply inviting them, no matter how many pesticides to be used, with some precautions situations like the one you mentioned could be avoided, a bit of common sense would be appreciated. We had our housekeeping team on it and no one found ants in the room after the “issue” was discovered. Attached are pictures from all angles of room 309, as you can see, no ants whatsoever. 3 and 4 - The pool was in fact empty due to a major unexpected malfunction, sadly all of this happened in Christmas season, finding hard to find maintenance stores open. Do note that even then we have done all it was humanly possible to have it working as fast as possible; the number of days closed were due to let replacing materials to dry in order to provide a full isolation. Regarding the noise you have to explain to us how to do repairs without noise. It’s allowed under exceptional situations like the one explained above. You could have gone to Quinta Penha França, an hotel nearby Imperatriz, at no costs and use their swimming pool. In the end that's where you have stayed the last part of your stay, we know that. About water temperature, it’s winter season, an exterior swimming pool. Ice cold water is a bit dramatic. Guests use it, no complains whatsoever. Common sense says water is cold, not iced cold – average temperatures are 16-18ºC in this period. Saying that it causes cramps and serious injury at this temperature is unfair. No one is obliged to use it if the water is colder than summer temperature; it is an exterior swimming pool. 5 – The hotel has the essential electric sockets, it’s impossible to any hotel to have enough electrical sockets for all guest devices. We have putted an additional electrical extension cord in your room, respecting all safety measurements. Once again we have done our outmost to help you. 6 – About bank accounts every company has it level of security access to anything considered to be of major importance and confidential. If the money didn’t showed up in our account we rightly assumed it wasn’t as we several times tried to explain you. If it’s a bank issue whatsoever it’s a thing we assume no responsibility, there is no reason for it. You should ask your bank not to us to refund you of the expenses for not making sure the money transfer was correctly inserted. Just by telling you it was ok does not mean that your bank was being very accurate. We find a bit hard to understand your words regarding the reception and management, we have given you the chance to change room but you declined since you have made your mind to check-out earlier (1st January), we have offered you a private fireworks view with no costs regarding all this “trouble”. The reception staff is a big part of our friendliness and after all the effort we had, it is hard to read a comment denigrating us like this. On our side we have done most of everything to help you. For the product and service we have offered you the hotel has only been partially compensated. To exist any kind of compensation, it should be the hotel, for earlier check-out before agreed time with no reasonable right to. You did not hit a wall, you have received a proper and polite reply to your demands but there are things we find unacceptable as explained in detail, with pictures documenting it. You were even given and additional discount to your original reservation (152€ less) but you kept insisting in compensations after compensations. We are sorry but we do not work that way." -Resuming, a guest with this kind of behavior is not to be welcomed anywhere, so we leave this notice to all who read this (having an accomodation to rent and other future guests) to realize how people sometimes can be "persona non grata", implicating and trying to get freebies. Using our hotel to "ghostly" keep a reservation since the other hotel was more expensive and/or with no availability and then using untrue arguments for early check-out and compensations, what kind of attitude is this, I wonder? In a general look at the other opinions here your arguments are beside the point and untrue. Instead of trying to "teach" hotel management, getting bargains and disrespecting agreed conditions, probably trying to live in an honest and positive way would be better. For what concerns us, this case is closed. Kind regards.

In the middle of a ten day holiday at this hotel. It is a lovely, clean, small and friendly hotel in an excellent central location. Our self-catering room with balcony is huge, with all you need to make yourself comfortable for a short or long stay. There is a very reasonably priced little supermarket next door .The beds are perfect for a good nights sleep and it's lovely to have a bath aswell as a shower.
The rooftop pool area is a bonus and kept very clean. The manager is very friendly and has a great sense of humour.
We are here during an unexpected heatwave and having to sleep with the windows and doors open ( fans are available) and yes there is traffic noise but I was aware that I was booking a central city location and have earplugs. If I wanted peace and quiet I would have booked a rural hotel. Having said that the hotel itself is very quiet, we can't hear other guests/staff coming and going.
Overall we are glad we chose this hotel for our first trip to Funchal .

My room was spacious and, once the blinds were opened was very bright. The catering facilities were really good, unlike many self catering hotels in some Mediterranean region hotels where you get basics, this hotel provided a good range of equipment including a microwave and even a toaster on request. Bed was comfy, bathroom clean. Location was about 15/20 minutes walk from the farmers market area. There is a restaurant on the ground floor which I didn't visit and a supermarket which is well supplied with a range of goods.
I was able to leave luggage in reception before check in and after I checked out.
A great place to stay while in Funchal.
If I had to find a grumble, there was no plug in the sink! But honestly, I'd happily stay here again.

This aparthotel really has all the facilities you could think of, as well as being close to shops, bars and restaurants. Reception is 24h, there is a safe, kitchen, wardrobe, phone, TV, fast internet. The balcony and terrace are nice to sit on when it's sunny (which is most of the time in Madeira!) The only thing it didn't have was air conditioning.

I have to say I was not expecting too much as the cost of the holiday was so cheap, but the hotel was really good, clean friendly and in an ideal location. We were in room 307 which faces the sea and next door to Bernini's restaurant which was excellent. The hotel has an outside swimming pool on the roof, and we only saw two couples during the week we were there which is such a shame as it was lovely. It was such a relaxing holiday, and we would definitely stay there again.

Great hotel, helpful and friendly staff, extremely convenient location. Room clean and with all the amenities you need. Continental breakfast is basic but all you need to start the day. Nice little pool on the roof. Bring a towel as you can't use room towels at the pool. Highly recommended and I would happily stay there again.

This hotel is one of the cleanest that we have ever stayed on. Staff are very helpful. The apartments have everything you need to make coffee or have a meal in. There are NO ANTS. The private balconies are a joy to sit out on in the evenings. There is a variety store with everything next door. The swimming pool on the roof has stunning views.
I advise getting the ocean view rooms for the little extra you pay. You can easily walk downtown. We are seniors and found this hotel to be a wonderful experience.
