Very helpfull people on the reception, good strong breakfest, beautiful view on garden (5 days) an marvelous seeview, combinated computer and digital television free of charge on the room, good quied place surounded by bananagardens and close to the see and big hotels like Lido, close to one levadawalk (Dos Piornais); I enjoyded a daily swim in the clear but fresh 18-19 °) swimming pool.
We had a nice vacation with beautiful wether and milions of flowers.
Thanks Stan and Nicole from Belgium
Convenient for restaurants and local bus services.
Friendly helpful staff ,fresh towels daily, plenty of hot water and free internet access.
A good budget choice
The dogs next door keeps barking all morning (a lot of noise !)
It is obvious thet 'they' have given up, and now try to get the last money out of it !
Only if you can't finde something else..................
The hotel is advertised with a swimming pool it is there but not in use and the staff direct you to the Lido (I feel they should not advertise a pool at all).
The breakfast is continental and we prefer some cooked breakfast so we only had one serving which was ok but we decided to eat breakfast out each day.
The hotel (guest house) is nicely situated and getting about either by foot, taxi or local bus is really easy. There are lots of nice restaurants very close by.
A kettle in the room would improve things as we often found no one at the reception if we just wanted a drink hot or cold.
Louis and Peter were very friendly. I do think it might have helped us if we had been given information on the local bus service especially the fact you can purchase ten trips to travel around. We often walked into Funchal and then used the bus to come back. Peter said he was going to make some improvements in the future which should help. We enjoyed our stay but if we went back to Madeira we would go to a hotel with a pool. They also had free wifi which was a plus but was slow at times. Television provided a variety of stations. Hotel is situated in a nice area.
The hotel is a very simple place with basic accomodation facilities.
The room was cleaned everyday. Even tough the furniture is outdated, I consider it to be a good option in terms of cost.Breakfast is simple.
Here are some of the bad points. And this is despite my wife being Potuguese and a fluent speaker. Without a native, I sense things would be even worse.
- Staff are very rude. Always.
- Breakfast always opened at least 30 mins after advertised. On one occassion when we had a tour booked and needed to be out early, we had to go and wake the owner up and ask him to set out the breakfast. Although we apologised profusely for waking him, he never apologised for oversleeping.
- Breakfast is terrible. Stale bread, cordial orange juice and old bagels. After the first few days, we ate elsewhere even though breakfast was included in the rate.
- They switched the water off around 7pm when we were showering before going out for dinner. My wife had to streak down in a towel whilst I wandered around with hair full of soap suds. They switched it off to water the garden. Again, no apology.
- They don't answer the phone. Before streaking in her towel, my wife tried to call them. When she asked if they'd heard her calling, they said "yes, but they had other things to do".
After the stay, we filled in their Complaints Book. First time I've stayed somewhere bad enough in Portugal to justify doing so.
THE GOOD
- Monte Verde is reasonably situated for both Lido and heading into the old town of Funchal.
- The decor in the rooms gives you the opportunity to step back in time and see what furniture and decor was like 30 years ago.
- Rooms are, at least, clean.
