I booked this hotel because it mentioned gardens and balcony rooms overlooking said gardens. However, there are no gardens. A large strip along the front of the hotel, 2/3 metre lawn around two sides and the pool on the fourth. The pool was drained and would remain so until June, although that was uncertain because the owners were thinking of removing it altogether. My bedroom was clean but shabby, a bleach stain on the bedspread, chipped furniture, old tv, only Portuguese channels and not enough hangers. I knew there no tea/coffee making facilities so took my own but there were no toiletries either. I had to borrow a bath plug from reception who had been told not leave one in the room. The bath had been extensively patched and the curtain rail was a bit rusty. Only two sockets in the bedroom, both placed behind furniture and one high up in the bathroom. Dim lighting and no air-conditioning. Breakfast was adequate and fresh. Staff (all 3 of them) were helpful and one in particular spoke good English and was friendly. A computer room was provided and was a comprehensive book selection available in a little seating area on the first floor. Madeira is very hilly and I struggled up to the hotel, It is situated near to the Lido end of Funchal but would recommend staying further along towards the Marina and the old city. No beaches, only large pebbles, hence the need for the Lido.

We had booked a couple of nights for New year, but it got cancelled. We should have paid on arrival and had free cancellation. But the Hotel Monte Verde charged us the full amount just after booking in December and here 3 months later we still haven't received a refund. I would not recommend booking with them.

This hotel is not located very close to the citycenter. The swinningpool is only half full of water, and can't be used. The swimmingpool area is quite run down and dirty. No internet in the rooms. Not all the staff in the reception speaks english. The breakfast is VERY simple, and 100% the same every day. The charge 1 euro extra per day, for a key to the safe !!!
The dogs next door keeps barking all morning (a lot of noise !)
It is obvious thet 'they' have given up, and now try to get the last money out of it !
Only if you can't finde something else..................

This small hotel with 20 rooms is very basic but that is reflected in the price of the room, We found the rooms very clean. The beds were moderately comfortable although the pillows could be improved upon. Daily housekeepers attended.
The hotel is advertised with a swimming pool it is there but not in use and the staff direct you to the Lido (I feel they should not advertise a pool at all).
The breakfast is continental and we prefer some cooked breakfast so we only had one serving which was ok but we decided to eat breakfast out each day.
The hotel (guest house) is nicely situated and getting about either by foot, taxi or local bus is really easy. There are lots of nice restaurants very close by.
A kettle in the room would improve things as we often found no one at the reception if we just wanted a drink hot or cold.
Louis and Peter were very friendly. I do think it might have helped us if we had been given information on the local bus service especially the fact you can purchase ten trips to travel around. We often walked into Funchal and then used the bus to come back. Peter said he was going to make some improvements in the future which should help. We enjoyed our stay but if we went back to Madeira we would go to a hotel with a pool. They also had free wifi which was a plus but was slow at times. Television provided a variety of stations. Hotel is situated in a nice area.

Stopped there for a couple of weeks with the wife. This small hotel is more of a bed & breakfast. It IS simple and family run. Don't expect waiter service or luggage transfer. The room was adequate for what we paid for. Room cleaned and beds made every day except Sundays. Breakfast simple buffet and boiled eggs cook as required. There is a shared swimming pool which we did NOT use mainly because it was winter. There is also an outdoor cooking facility ( Barby) if you want to use it.. Only one room with 'sea view' Car parking IS at a premium but we were able to park up at night without to much difficulty. There are some excellent bars and eating places within easy walking distance. All in all we had a great quiet holiday for the price charged.NOTE There is a bus stop one minute away.

Due to our return flight to the UK being cancelled we had to stay a further four nights in Madeira. Most hotels were full but managed to get two rooms at the Monte Verde. Basic but clean and breakfast buffet okay. Back packers sort of hotel but even in the few nights we were there saw that improvements were being made. The hotel location was good and hotel has the potential for being great. They need to improve on pool area and outdoor sitting area. Seats on balconies should be replaced. The staff were so pleasant and again could not do enough to help. I thank them all for our stay and look forward to a re visit in the future.

Stayed for a week during a conference event i was attending. The hotel is located about 25 min from the center.
The hotel is a very simple place with basic accomodation facilities.
The room was cleaned everyday. Even tough the furniture is outdated, I consider it to be a good option in terms of cost.Breakfast is simple.

THE BAD
Here are some of the bad points. And this is despite my wife being Potuguese and a fluent speaker. Without a native, I sense things would be even worse.

- Staff are very rude. Always.

- Breakfast always opened at least 30 mins after advertised. On one occassion when we had a tour booked and needed to be out early, we had to go and wake the owner up and ask him to set out the breakfast. Although we apologised profusely for waking him, he never apologised for oversleeping.

- Breakfast is terrible. Stale bread, cordial orange juice and old bagels. After the first few days, we ate elsewhere even though breakfast was included in the rate.

- They switched the water off around 7pm when we were showering before going out for dinner. My wife had to streak down in a towel whilst I wandered around with hair full of soap suds. They switched it off to water the garden. Again, no apology.

- They don't answer the phone. Before streaking in her towel, my wife tried to call them. When she asked if they'd heard her calling, they said "yes, but they had other things to do".

After the stay, we filled in their Complaints Book. First time I've stayed somewhere bad enough in Portugal to justify doing so.

THE GOOD
- Monte Verde is reasonably situated for both Lido and heading into the old town of Funchal.

- The decor in the rooms gives you the opportunity to step back in time and see what furniture and decor was like 30 years ago.

- Rooms are, at least, clean.
