The cellar gym is beautiful and fully equipped. Breakfast buffet was excellent and we also enjoyed items from the a la carte menu; the french toast for example was top notch. Our suite was quite luxurious and we liked having the two terraces; 608 is the smaller room but it has a killer terrace with views of the major clock towers and cathedrals; we had both 607 and 608.
The hotel does not offer courtesy pickup from the train station; a taxi with luggage is $30. They offered a transfer for $120 which I politely declined. This hotel is conveniently located to Globus and Jelmoli stores and is within walking distance to the train station if you don't have a lot of luggage. The Park Hyatt and Bauer au Lac are past the Paradeplatz closer to the lake.
The main advantage of those two hotels is a better food situation on property. I wasted $200 of F&B credit that I had at this hotel because there was nothing I could eat on the meat-dominant menus either here or at their sister property Hotel Storcher a few minutes walk away. Also, the restaurants are all Michelin-starred which is not exactly family friendly. If that is important to you, it is a bit disincentive to staying at this property. I was satisfied enough with the discounted price I paid for the suite not to get all worked up about it, but I was unhappy that the only suggestion the hotel had for me was to drink $200 worth of drinks at the bar (I don't drink soda or alcohol). It would make sense for this hotel to make a deal for the use of food credit at a nearby brasserie; a 5-star hotel offering that amenity to Amex FHR and Virtuoso customers should do better. The hotel's manager was on vacation while we were there and I got an email about it from the hotel after I got home saying essentially Sorry Charlie. At other properties, the hotel would do something to make good such as offer a taxi to the airport or offer spa credit. They didn't offer a taxi when I suggested it, and they don't have a spa.
Anyway, Cafe Honold on the Rennweg street offered good treats, sandwiches and quiches and Bianchi was a great Italian restaurant a few minutes walk away that had plenty of fish items.
I also noticed you couldn't get a bar of soap here; it's all liquid or nothing at this point.
To sum up, it's a great city hotel but it has its quirks and it's not for everyone. Go here for location and a sense of place; avoid if you like things in hotels that are easy to work and if you want more complete food options on property.
I was kindly upgraded to an extremely lovely room with a terrace and they really made me feel very special indeed, for which I extend to all those whom I mentioned and also to all those I did not mention, because memory fades with the effects of time, my heartfelt thanks and this is my new home in Zürich and I hope to bring the family here one day soon.
Very rarely is one so impressed by a hotel but this one leaves me deeply grateful and without the words to fully encapsulate my views comprehensively. It Is a must stay place in Zürich and located in the charming old town, makes it even more special.
Well done all of you, hope to see you all very soon!
Our room was gorgeous; we got upgraded to the historic suite, and it was simply fantastic with original ceiling and floors, so charming. And it overlooked old town. The bed was really comfortable. Nice bathroom and good bath products. We had robs and slippers.
The food was delicious; we ate in the courtyard. Their restaurant on the street was always busy. And they had a nice breakfast offering.
The location is amazing, right in the middle of the charming old town but also close to the main shopping avenue. And it’s a very short walk to the lake through the old town streets with all the beautiful shops.
What makes this hotel even better is the wonderful service. The check-in was a breeze and so pleasant (I wish I remember the gentleman’s name at the front desk; he was so kind and professional). Everyone goes out of their way and always have a smile. They learn your name right away. And they had everything ready for our early check out even without us prompting them. They’re so well coordinated.
Even their pens and umbrellas are super cool, which they let us take with us. They even had a cool Tesla taxi for us to take us to the airport!
You should absolutely book here. This is the perfect balance of cool and elegance wrapped in great service.
We will absolutely come back. We even tried to change our flight so we could stay another night.
Virtuoso review: we always travel with Virtuoso program and this hotel knocked it out of the park. They let us check in early and had upgraded us about 3 levels up before we arrived; no hassling, no pointing out the program like at other hotels in Europe. Just fantastic. The only other hotel with this level of care in Europe for the program is Le Sirenuse; the Widder is that good. Thank you!
Breakfast was lovely and the morning service crew were very helpful when my daughter felt unwell and could not make it down to eat. They sent up a tray at no charge. I was appreciative of this extra effort.
The hotel is a good 7 to 10 minutes walking distance away from the hauptbahnhof. This is through the main street and can hence be a little tricky to negotiate with luggage. The last 500 metres or so, is through a cobblestoned lane and is uphill. This lane is essentially for pedestrians, though the odd vehicle or taxi may wend its way through.
The entrance is unpretentious , but once inside, the staff are cheerful, welcoming and eager to please. As usual, we were early for check in and hence had to wander around for a couple of hours. This permitted us to explore the neighbourhood, that is pretty upmarket. Among the many eateries that dot the area, there is a Sprungli Cafe about a 5 minute walk away along the main road and the lake is possibly about 10 minutes away at a gentle, unhurried pace.
We had booked a design city view room, but an upgrade by the hotel saw us on the 6th floor in a beautiful and spacious room. The room led to a small terrace with an excellent view of the city. The room was extremely spacious, well lit. The bed was in the centre of the room, with the sitting area occupying the farther part of the room. A Nespresso machine with an assorted selection of flavours was the icing on the cake. The bathroom was spotless and all the furnishings and accessories were top class.
Breakfast was excellent. The staff extremely cordial and friendly and went out of their way to accommodate the requests of the guests. Special mention must be made here, of Mr. Senthuran, who was pleasant, brisk and efficient. When my wife told him that she would like to have hot chocolate, without any sugar, he went out of his way to see that the request was fulfilled. Not only that, he saw to it that she was provided with a sufficient quantity of the chocolate pellets, that she could continue the practice at home.
Housekeeping was top class and maintained the cleanliness of the lodgings in an excellent manner. The hotel is in the centre of the shopping district and walking distance from Zurich’s iconic vegetarian restaurant - The Hiltl. The front desk led by the concierge - Katharina are extremely helpful. Katahrina had organised for us, at short notice, a most delightful dinner at the la Cedre serving Lebanese food on new year’s eve - a day when practically all eateries were packed.
Security was top class. The lift are discreetly tucked away and are card operated. Their all glass facade is a very nice touch, giving it a lovely spacious feel
All in all we were delighted to be at the Widder. It was the perfect way to end our holiday in Switzerland.
Please do eat at August Restaurant and at Widder Garden while at the hotel. They were some of the best meals we had during our stay in Zurich!
I'd definitely want to go back here!
I loved the bar , both indoor and outdoor are very cool and a nice welcome drink voucher too. Now I was staying in a single room so their smaller ones, it was not that large and a little out of date for my liking but I think that’s the look they are going for, bathroom was the same tiny and very dated. I guess the doubles are a lot nicer and brighter and the pics look more stylish , so maybe avoid the single rooms it was the deciding factor in me choosing a different hotel for my return tbh to their sister property the Storchen nearby which seems a bit more my style.
Overall I can see why it has good reviews, especially the service and restaurant etc, but perhaps avoid the single rooms if you can.
"My tip is wear walking shoes and pack cold and warm outfits Zurich is quiet unpredictable. ☺️ Don’t forget to eat in Zughauskeller."Read full review
