Detailed Reviews
Our room was spacious and beautifully presented with the most spectacular view of Lake Luzern and the mountains (Pilatus and Riggi). We had a long balcony that accommodated a small round table and 2 chairs so that we could enjoy an early morning coffee overlooking the lake. inside the room, all facilities were available: large TV screen, tablet, Nespresso machine with as many pods as we wished. The bathroom was equipped with a very efficient hairdryer and plenty towels, Molton Brown toiletries, as well as bathrobe and slippers.
Excellent efficient and very friendly service too!

The Rytz Suite is grandiose and very generous but a bit old fashion.
The general switch for the light must be dimmable.
By arrival coffee machine and fridge were not plugged. Cablesalad behind the furniture. Not enough capsules.
The suite should be equipped with a separate shower. Difficult entry into the bath for the elderly.
Corridors and connected roms are very ringing. Check door and windows density.
The plastic sets in the Restaurant National are not worthy of a 5-star rating. At least white tablecloth
Very friendly staff on every level
Price performance relation is not quite right for us (fullrate)

Response from GHNGuestRelations, Assistant Front Office Manager at Grand Hotel National Luzern
Responded Jan 5, 2020
Dear 555Alain We thank you very much for staying at the traditional GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL and for giving us your honest review about your experience with us. First, we are very glad you enjoyed our Ritz Suite with lake view, which is our highest category, and the entire team appreciates your praising words. Also, it is great to hear about your visit at our Restaurant National, where stylish tables keep plain for environmental reasons, and we hope you had a tasteful meal. It is regrettable for us that we could not meet your fully satisfaction. But as our highest aim is a constantly improvement of our services, we take all feedbacks very serious and are always very important to us. Besides, we kindly point out that our staff would have had assisted you with any concern, like bringing more complimentary Nespresso coffee capsules or showing how to the dim the light. Moreover, if a walk-in shower is required directly, we recommend the categories “Deluxe Room Lake view” and “Empire Junior Suite Lake view” in which it is available. In fact we would consider this preference for your next stay. We would be happy if you take into consideration of our hotel again for your next planned trip to Lucerne and sending you sunny regards from the City of Lights. Victoria Kupke Assistant Front Office Manager

Best location to get to the train station or bus to get to the mountains.
Best customer service. 5 stars
On our stay we did the breakfast to start our day and the ala carte poached egg was delicious and the complimentary wine/beer/soda pop was a nice touch and we ended up drinking more wine because wine is so much cheaper in Switzerland for the quality than in the states for the same wine so we were like what the hey, let’s drink more.
It the room was beautiful and fantastic. Felt like we were royalty. We are hotel snobs and I will only write a review if it was magical.
I would say book it if you’re looking for a great room, great location and a friendly staff. But I am not sure how the interior rooms are like but the water views are magical

Originally booked two nights through booking.com, then was contacted via the hotel as I had some specific requirements due to my partners blindness. After discussion and reassurance about the availabilty of facilities, restaurants, parking etc., they persuaded to upgeade to a more expensive room and cancel my booking through booking.com
Well at over £600 per night without breakfast the level of service was appalling. Everyone was indifferent, no attempt whatsoever to engage with the customer. Given that my partner was visually impaired, walks with a white stick, we may as well have been invisible. We were left waiting 45 minutes for a table on the terrace when there were many tables available, but not set. When we did eventually get seated it was next to a party of 3 that were all smoking. We asked to move to the restaurant, but we're told we couldn't as it was already set for breakfast the following day!! This was as 20.45 in the evening! They kept saying they would move us and never did. We had a terrible meal, had to repeatedly aak for the wine we ordered which eventually came half way through our main course. All in all a very poor experience for a so-called 5 star hotel. To add insult to injury when we got the bill we had discovered they had overcharged us for the wine by almost €90!
The room was adequate, but small for a suite, the air conditioning didn't really work, the bathroom needed an update. But worst of all was the tiny terrace which had no privacy whatsoever as guests from other rooms could be seen openly, indeed it was easier to hold a conversation with the people from the neighbouring room than my partner largely due to the noise from the air-conditioning which was vented hot air straight on to the terrace making the already hot 35c temperature unbearable, hence rendering the terrace with the 'magnificent' view of the lake unusable.
The situation didn't get better, the following morning when breakfast arrived in the room. It was wheeled in on a trolley and unceremoniously dumped. No attempt was made to lay the breakfast our for us or to indeed check we had what we had ordered. We ended up with two lots of cheese, no eggs or toast and no cold milk for the tea. Laughable at €70 for the privilege of eating breakfast in the privacy of your own room.
I could go on. I did complain and asked to speak to a Manager and was told none was available. As they had without my permission already taken payment for the room and breakfast, there was little I could do, especially as I had a 6 hour drive ahead of me and was anxious to leave.
The receptionist was 'sympathetic' made all the right noises, but offered nothing by way of compensation. Though she did say she would relay my complaint to a manager who would respond by email. 4 weeks on no surprise, but I have heard nothing from the hotel, which sadly doesn't surprise me.
It was quite clear that this hotel is run for the staff and to a timetable not for guests. It offers all the outward signs of luxury and comfort, but it flatters to DECEIVE.

Dear GlobeTrotting703219 We thank you for staying with us at the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL and for taking the time to give us your personal feedback. Honest feedback is very important to us as it is our highest aim and the greatest source of motivation for the entire team to always do our very best so that our guests can enjoy an unforgettable stay with us. We certainly appreciate your honesty as only those critics serve as a helpful possibility to improve ourselves. Your described happenings are regrettable, and they certainly do not meet our standards to afford the most comfortable stay to all of our international guests. However, the more we also regret that we unfortunately did not have all information you are writing about. Only your comment about the smoker at the neighbor table and a non-possible seat change about what you already spoke with two of our managers that evening, received us upon departure which has been noted very well and was forwarded to the upper management directly. Besides that, these points as well as the additional ones we just have learned about on this platform, have been discussed internal to avoid similar inconveniences in the future. We do try our best to satisfy all our guest’s requests and wishes which we always respect and try to fulfill, especially in these special times. Furthermore, we kindly point out that the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL is celebrating 150 anniversary this year and we are proud that we can keep the building with its establishment very true to the original. This condition brings along that our property is protected as a historic monument and many facilities are originally from the past, like the balconies. Nevertheless, we do agree that some situation have not been working optimal and we do understand your point of view. You can be sure, that we have taken everything you mention on board and we will work hard on the specific points. Still, it would be a pleasure to welcome you again to the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL and we would appreciate you giving us a chance to convince you of our improvements. We are wishing you all the best and for further concerns, we will be always at your disposal. Best regards Tino Wagner Director of Business Development Member of the Board

We loved to stay at the Grand Hotel National Luzern. Our room view was amazing and service was exceptional. All the staff and Tino received us with a warm welcome, they were sure we had an amazing time in Luzern.
Property has many restaurant to choose from, also they have a Famous Lobby bar with a great atmosphere, one of the first bars establish in Luzern.
Grand National is a Historic Hotel in Luzern that blends tradition with modern, with beautiful views, super close, convenient and walking distance to the city, restaurants, cafes, old town, chapel bridge, lion monument and more.
Perfect for Family and Couples! Great Hotel in the heart of Luzern!

The location is great as it’s right on the lake with great views from the room. The downside is if it’s hot there isn’t AC and open windows allow you to hear the people all night. We also had smoke wafting in from an adjacent room (smoking on their balcony).
The rooms are good sized. The bathroom is quite large. Traditional decor. The bed was okay, not the last comfortable (but the temps may have impacted that).
The staff was all friendly and helpful (especially the woman working on the terrace - which is quite pretty).
Overall I’m not sure I would agree with the 5 star rating. It’s a good hotel but not great (the view is great).

We would particularly like to thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback about your recent stay. Our highest aim is to constantly improve our services, so feedback is always very important to us. For sure, we are 24 hours at your disposal to take care about a comfortable stay. The more we deeply regret that we had no information about your concerns which could have been resolved quickly during your stay. Referring the AC, we kindly advise that all rooms facing the lake are equipped with one, instead the rooms facing the city side have an air circulation. Should it still be to warm in the room, an extra fan is available on request. We are glad, you generally enjoyed a pleasant time with us and it would be our great pleasure to welcome you to the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL again some day. Best regards Victoria Kupke Guest Relation

This hotel was very lovely and a perfect location. We took our entire family for vacation. I communicated direct with the hotel for reservations as we needed 4 rooms and they responded quickly with quotes. They made arrangements for the family of 4 traveling with us to have a lakefront suite that they added extra beds to and it was lovely! The rest of us had two person room. We enjoyed the lakeside patio for after dinner sitting; we had breakfast included and the breakfast buffet was beautiful and you could order additional hot items from the kitchen. The staff was so helpful in providing bus passes and helping book reservations for the tour to Mt. Pilatus. Close to everything - we walked a lot along the lake and enjoyed restaurants, sightseeing, etc. There was an indoor pool that grandchildren enjoyed. Also a nightly turndown. I would stay there again! Thank you to the hotel for providing a memorable vacation.

My title says it all really...... I couldn’t fault anything at all during my four night stay here.... I just loved it!!
The whole experience, from first making the booking directly by telephone and email (direct is a must really) to leaving at the end of our visit, was just exceptional!
The room, a junior empire suite, was fabulous and the view over the lake is just one I could wake up and look at every day and see something different. The pair of binoculars provided in the room was just a great accessory to enhance that experience.
Look I could write so much but by now anyone reading this must realise I just loved it and would, and hopefully will, spend much more time in this hotel.
Thank you especially to the team on reception, they really don’t need to do anything as nothing at all was wrong, but they were so friendly and made it so welcoming every time we passed by the reception desk!
I first stayed here when I was 11 yrs old (now 60+) with my mother, I am so grateful she introduced me to this experience, which I have enjoyed a few times over the years.

When arriving the entrance had cones in front of it so we had to drive past - we thought there must be another entrance. However there was not and having turned around I had to phone them to ask how to get to the entrance.
Having sorted that the valet got all our luggage and took car of the car. We were pleased to get free valet parking because of booking direct with the hotel. Check in was great and we were offered a glass of Prosecco. We were then given a brief look around and actually shown to our room which was available well before check in time. What a lovely welcome. It was our wedding anniversary and they had gone to town with fruit, a bath bomb, petals and water plus a lovely card signed by the staff.
We had booked a standard room which was beautiful but very small. There was a fairly large writing desk in there that made it difficult for my husband to walk around his side of the bed. Everything in the room was quality but it was just small. The bathroom was actually pretty large and beautiful with a massive shower head.
The only issues we had were at breakfast. 2 of the 3 mornings the waitress took our order and forgot both times to place the order. The third morning we waited 25 mins and had to ask another waiter who was apologetic. The waitress actually came to us and said it was on its way and still nothing after 10 mins. Others arriving much later than us got their breakfasts. We did not think this was acceptable for a 5 star hotel. When mentioning this at check out we just got a sorry. Not really good enough when you pay a high supplement for breakfast here.
The hotel is in a great location. We ate dinner at the hotel all 3 days - twice in the National restaurant and once in the Italian restaurant Klinglers. All enjoyable meals although we felt expensive. We had rainy weather so it was just convenient to stay near the hotel.Otherwise we would have eaten more reasonably elsewhere.
You are offered water when you check out.
All in all a lovely hotel and we would not hesitate to stay here again.

From my point of view the National is much grander and better located
The only problem with the National is its room AC which is poorly thought but in September should not be an issue
Dear maryannbuckley23
The main electricity in our hotel is 220 - 230 volts. You should have a look on your device if it is compatible for 110-230 volts. We have adapters available fo these devices.
In case you have a device which is not compatible with 230 volts you would need a voltage transformer.
Best regards from Lucerne

Dear Merlion42
The hotel itself does not have a gym. We are working together with the Fitnesspark National opposite the hotel and the admission is CHF 25.00 per person/entry for hotel guests (special rate). The tickets are available at the hotel.
Best regards
