Detailed Reviews
We had a junior suite with a private whirlpool on the balcony, which was fantastic.
The view of the lake and surrounding mountains was amazing.
The room and bathroom were spacious but a bit lacking in character for us.
While the hotel and its location near the center of Luzern is great, we found the Service could be improved regarding some details.
Very annoying was the fact that there are not enough parking spots for the guests.
Reservation is not possible, there is no valet service or any other assistance but directions to the nearest public parking.
The staff was friendly but not very attentive.
We had to ask for our room to be vacuumed because the cleaning staff forgot.
And we were a bit alarmed that none of the staff was wearing masks.
The check-in service was minimal and not very informative.
The food in the restaurant Scala was excellent as were the wines. Top quality tuna, tender veal cheeks everything expertly cooked and very tasty.
The Tiramisu was nice too, although olive oil on a desert doesn't work for me.
Unfortunately, we didn't get the requested table, because the hostess (Irene von Atzigen) claimed that it was already reserved by other hotel guests,
with turned out to be untrue!
This is not what we expect in a 5-Star hotel and makes us hesitate in recommending this hotel.

We stayed at the Montana for 4 nights in the Penthouse Junior Suite with Lake View. From the funicular to reach the hotel, to check in, to the room itself, everything was flawless and made for a perfect, easy stay.
We were given travel passes to use around Lucerne, which has an excellent public transport system. We were also offered the use of bicycles to use for free.
The room itself is beautiful; it has a large bathroom with excellent amenities such as a Dyson hairdryer and bidet toilet. The bed is comfortable and has access to backlighting and plugs directly next to it. The minibar, included in the room rate, is well-stocked and refilled every day. The coffee machine is also well stocked.
The star of the show, the terrace, is large, with chairs, loungers and of course the hot tub. The view is absolutely stunning, even on a cloudy day.
As we were on our honeymoon, the hotel staff thoughtfully left a card in the room along with some chocolates which was a lovely touch.
The hotel staff also ordered Tell Passes for us, which we bought from the tourist office and benefitted from the 2 for 1 offer as we were staying at the hotel. This was a large saving and covered our activities for the whole stay.
The breakfast was extensive and delicious - we treated ourselves to breakfast in bed on our last morning and it was definitely worth it!
We also ordered room service dinner, and the meals were tasty and came with bread and butter.
All in all, I cannot praise this hotel enough - it is definitely worth the price.

We loved this hotel! Everything about it was top notch. The interior is classy and elegant with old world charm. Our room was just beautiful with two small balconies that overlooked the lake. There were two sinks, a real bathtub, a glass shower, a Dyson hair dryer and a nice marble shelf for all our stuff in the bathroom.
The room was large with a comfortable king size bed, desk area, two chairs and a small round table, and even an end table. A slight problem was finding plugs to charge our phone etc.
Location is high on a hill with a complimentary funicular to bring you down to the street. It’s maybe a 20 minute walk to town or take a bus. The bus is super convenient. We even rode the whole route as an unguided tour around the town. I’m sure the hotel staff can provide info on getting bus passes.
This hotel is one of the nicest we’ve ever stayed in. Our compliments to the excellent staff that made our stay so memorable.

Our stay at the Art Deco Montana was simply wonderful. We switched to a superior panorama room with seeview, even if the ‘normal’ room was already very nice. Breakfast was perfect, everything so tasty and of good quality, we had a lovely evening in the Hemingway lounge and our only regret is that we had not booked a diner at the Scala restaurant in time, so we missed out on that. The view from the room was just so amazing and relaxing, the people working in the hotel all friendly, professional and helpful, the little train to bring you up and down from and to the promenade makes the location up hill unproblematic (and that location makes the view so great and gives a bit more privacy when you are on your balcony): really nothing to complain about.
We come back!

We stayed in Lucerne over Christmas and were recommended this restaurant for Christmas Eve. I requested and received the menu for that night and booked a table immediately. When I asked for a table with a view I was told they could not do that but no reason given. When we arrived for our booking we were given a table 2 tables away from the window even though no one was seated at the table next to the window nor did anyone show up until we were leaving. Disappointing. The food was good though not amazing and we were surprised to be charged 7 francs for 2 jugs of tap water! Disappointing, would not return here.

Dear Guest Thank you very much for your review and the feedback! How nice, that you celebrated Christmas with us. We discussed the situation with the responsible departements. It ist correct, that we do not guarantee tables by the window. Unfortunately, this evening the guest with a table by the window was a no-show. Our restaurant is proud to be part in the project called "Water for Water". The sale of every glas of tap water at our property offers will be donated to the project. I hope that this explains the price of this specific water that was offered to you. We would be happy to welcome you again and convince you this time from the MONTANA. Your MONTANA-Team

Gosh, what a dreamy place! We loved everything about it, so it's hard to know where to begin. But yes, the funicular, which you call as you would an elevator, was tons of fun--it's the easiest way to reach the hillside hotel from the street in front of it. Owing to the hotel's position on the hillside, the views of Lake Lucerne/Luzern are spectacular, especially from the breakfast room (and presumably the restaurant, where we didn't eat) and the rooftop bar. We saved money by opting for a room facing away from the lake, but it was plenty charming and had a balcony overlooking a quiet and pretty residential street. The decor preserves the best features of the hotel's vintage, while still keeping up to date, with crisp and well-maintained finishes. The breakfast array was spectacular, to match the breathtaking view. The Old Town and the adjacent modern city are an easy lakeside walk away, though buses also run right past the funicular's station (and hotel guests ride for free). A favorite touch: the souvenir rubber ducky that comes with your room!

This is a very fine hotel with fantastic views across the lake and courteous and friendly staff. The breakfasts are superb, with individually prepared omelettes and fried eggs if required, though it would have been helpful to have been told on our first morning that this facility was still provided.
Hotels in Luzern are expensive, and prices at the Montana have increased considerably in recent years. As a couple who have stayed at this hotel multiple times over three decades, we were delighted to be quoted a special rate for our loyalty. 400 CHF per night, plus taxes but including breakfast, was still well above our normal budget, but in anticipation of three nights of luxury we accepted the offer.
The double room (218) which we were allocated was a massive disappointment. The hotel was built more than a century ago, when most rooms did not have private bathrooms. Clearly this room had been renovated at some point by adding a small bathroom in the corner, which of course reduced the size of the bedroom. The room key had another large key attached to it which, according to a member of staff, opened nothing.
218 must be the worst room in the building, though next door might be as bad, and it is a disgrace to such a prestigious hotel. The room is overlooked by other properties and is directly opposite the current renovation of a building.
The room wasn't cleaned on one day, but that was my fault. In nearly every hotel that I've stayed in, the 'do not disturb/please make up my room' card is colour-coded (usually red/green). Not so at the Montana these days. The cards are in German and English and the significance of the colours (dark blue and white) differ by language.
It was kind of the hotel to offer us the chance to stay at the Montana for what will probably be the last time, but we should have been warned that the offer was for a very low-grade room, the sort you wouldn't expect to find in such a splendid property.

Dear MelS48 Thank you for your feedback and constructive criticism. We have forwarded your critique to our hotel management and will discuss it further internally. We are very sorry that you have not been happy with your room. Concerning your key issue and the door card, it is true that we aim to stand out and not operate as every other hotel. Therefore, we are using a Montana-desgined color coordination as well as exciting accesoires like the keys that make your trip worth to remember. We still hope to being able to welcome you again in the future and wish you save travels. Kind regards from the Montana-team

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. We stayed in one of the new rooms on the 4th floor and as soon as we walked in you could smell the newness. Room was great and the view unbeatable. The staff in the hotel were first class from reception to restaurant staff - very friendly. Shout out to Markus who provided excellent customer service at breakfast and brought me even more oranges!! Would definitely recommend a visit to this hotel we popped in to see other hotels in Lucerne and none of them were a patch on Montana. Thank you and keep up the good work.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Montana Hotel. We felt comfortable and welcomed from the very moment we stepped inside the hotel. Our room was bright and welcoming, beautifully decorated in a modern art deco style. From our balcony we enjoyed stunning views of Lake Lucerne.
We began our first evening with drinks in the Jazz bar, followed by an amuse-bouche in the open concept kitchen where we watched the talented chefs prepare our dinner! We were escorted back up to the dining room where we enjoyed the most delicious meals we've ever eaten. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. This was the highlight of our vacation. We can't wait to go back!

The Art Deco Hotel Montana has considerable potential - good locations in a vibrant city. The hotel is dated and characterized by very poor customer service. On arriving for lunch, we were told it would be 15 to 20 minutes before someone would take our order because all the staff were in a meeting. We booked a Penthouse room, but it turns out that penthouse rooms are on several floors of the hotel. Our “Penthouse” room was a small room with a small balcony.
Travelers from the US are not welcome at the Art Deco Hotel Montana - at $500+ per night it would be best to select another hotel with a reputation for customer service.

Can't answer that, we didn't have a vehicle when we were there.
You can take the hotel elevator down to the lake and walk to the right. When you get to the bridge walk accross and you’ll be at the train station.
Hope this helps.

The Art Deco Montana is uphill from the lake and has a fabulous view. It also has a terrace restaurant and a rooftop bar that take advantage of this view. You access the hotel by means of a short funicular when walking in town. I believe the Grand National is lakeside which is convenient, but the view would be better at the Montana.
