The hotel is located outside the old town. Most tours leave from the Old Town so it takes 20min by cab and costs between $7 euro's and 9 euros's each way to get there and back. The hotel is clean and they have 24 hour...More
I have visited the Gran Melia Fenix a number of times and have always appreciated the central location, high standard of accommodation and quietness of the rooms. That I keep returning is probably sufficient evidence that I like the place.
On arrival this time, I...More

This is a beautiful hotel in a location more convenient for shoppers than for visitors to the historic district.

Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights frame the neighborhood of Barrio Salamanca. With beautiful condominium buildings that make up most blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of
opportunities for shopping or checking out the stylish displays. The locals here are polished and fashionable, the atmosphere is leisurely, and the lush Retiro Park on the southern border is yet another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. A stroll through Barrio Salamanca is all about admiring the beautiful architecture, window-shopping, and people-watching in this upper-crust corner of Madrid.

We visited in May 2018. The red level lounge is somewhat small and quite average. the breakfast was good, with eggs made to order and offered a nice selection of other items. Service was good when staff could be found. The snacks and food were ok, but not always stocked. It seemed once snacks/food/drinks were placed out, no one checked to replenish. If you need something in the lounge, good luck trying to find a member of the staff to help you. On a couple occasions we just gave up and left the lounge. My disappointment was that the lounge is clearly under staffed and thus service and attention to detail suffer. So, overall it was just ok, nothing that one would expect from a 5 star hotel.
