The hotel occupies a historic building dating back to 1920. Recently refurbished and restored to its former glory, in line with the NH Hotels philosophy, it is within walking distance of the "Art Triangle", formed by the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.

The NH Madrid Nacional garners appreciation for its excellent service, with many guests commending the staff's helpfulness and efficiency, though there are occasional mentions of service inconsistencies. Despite the central location being a highlight for its proximity to attractions like the Prado Museum, some guests note the downside of street noise.
The hotel's comfortable rooms and cleanliness receive high marks, but opinions on room size and noise levels vary. While the amenities, including a coffee facility, are generally praised, the cost of the minibar and breakfast is a common concern among travelers.

I am normally a big fan of NH hotels, and I try to stay in them when they are an option and the hotel stay isn’t the central element of my trip. Therefore when I wanted to have a weekend away, I chose this property. I wanted to be near the Prado and the other art museums so it seemed like a bit of a no brainer. Check in was easy, as a solo female traveler I felt safe, and while I would normally say for what I paid this was great; however, there is one big issue....the beds! I don’t know from what torture device magazine the beds were purchased, but I don’t think I have ever slept on so hard of a mattress. There was no voice, no give, nothing. Sleeping on a board wouldn’t have been that different. I normally like firm mattresses but this took it to a whole new level. Also don’t waste your money on the breakfast. There are so many amazing places near by where you can have a feast for a fraction of the up charge option.

+1
This was indeed a first class hotel with eight floors in the heart of Madrid. Excellent location on the Paseo de Prado in Madrid's famous Art Triangle. It is across the road from a large park, within easy walking distance to the Prado Art Museum (Museo del Prado) - a first class art exhibition - and the Botanical Gardens (Jardin botanico). The hotel can be noisy if you care to open your window, as there is a great deal of day traffic and an abundance of sirens. However, with windows closed, no problem. Other art exhibits are int he area, with artists ready to sell their wares.
The room itself is rather smallish with little room for moving around especially with two large suitcases. It is an updated, clean facillity with everything you need - a divided bathroom, fridge, safe. The room was rather hot, and we couldn't figure out how to adjust the heat/cool system.
There are a lot of eateries in the area from Spanish to Thai to Chinese... even McDonalds on the corner. We didn't eat supper at the hotel, but heard that it was very good. The breakfast was amazing, with pictures to prove it! More than you could ever want.
The bathroom is very modern with a rain shower head and a handheld. However, the beautiful tub is very slippery, and there are was a lack of safety bars to help. We used a towel on the bottom of the tub before we got in to shower, and that solved the problem.

We stayed two nights in this lively hotel close to Prada Museum and restaurants.
The breakfast buffet was full of delicious fresh fruits, cold cuts and hot items.
The bedroom was facing the main street so it was a little loud with car sirens, etc
Otherwise the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very clean.

Walking distance from the Atocha train station we came in on, reception was quick and trouble free, the room was bathed in sunlight and with a large openable window. Comfortable beds and a very good bathroom. Minutes away from the Prado and the Botanical Gardens and easy access to city centre.

Perfectly located for those who would like to explore museums (Prado, Reina Sofia) and contemporary art galleries (commercial and not), this hotel has an efficient and very pleasant staff, always ready to help. The rooms are basically functional, but well appointed - good showers, good beds, and while small offer enough space for work if necessary, with a stylish desk light. As usual, rooms on the upper floor are better, more specifically the ones facing the botanic garden. 3 options: superior with view on 5th and 6th floor are a bit bigger and more quiet (there are 2 doors that isolate from the corridor; standard on the 8th floor (very sought after, I suppose) and standard with terrace (7th floor), which are probably the most quiet. I guess for 2 people, Superior with views is the best choice. As always with NH, the breakfast is excellent. Here, it is served in a spacious and airy room with plenty of natural light. The restaurant on the ground floor is quite pleasant as well. So all in all, a very good 4* hotel ,very conveniently located for cultural tourists and professionals. I have been returning regularly over the course of the past 6 years, and enjoy every visit. Only improvement I could suggest: the pillows!

We stayed 2 days and reception were vey helpful. The breakfasts were excellent. If you want hot food ask a waiter and they will get it cooked off for you from a quite extensive menu. The food available from Tablafinca restaurant is excellent. We had some really good Tapas and they major on cheese. If you want a more formal restaurant there are many in the vacinity.
The location is brilliant for the train station and seeing the art triangle and much more. I think the shops are some way off. It is a working hotel but with a good atmosphere.
My gripe as a wheelchair user was the accessible room 307. It is very difficult to get into in a wheelchair. The shower in the wet room is useless if you cannot walk as it is very narrow and there are few hand rails. The bed is lovely but cannot be split even though the queen matress is on two single bases. My legs kick at night so I had to book another room for my wife - no discount offered. Is this discrimination? The view is onto a central well so very dark and no sunlight. You do get a fair sized room though.

The location can’t be beat. Very close to the train station. Museums and buen retiro park close by. Rooms are small and minimal fitness facility - not a reason to remove a point, however, as it’s appropriate for the price.
As other reviews have stated, the breakfast at the hotel is pricey. You can definitely get a cheaper breakfast if you go outside the hotel. That being said, this is on par with other hotel breakfasts. You are paying for the convenience of not leaving the hotel.

This hotel is perfectly located for those travellkng through Madrid to other parts of Spain. Travellers arriving by air may use the frequent 203 Aeropuerto service from all terminals to Atocha station, 50min and €5 per person. The bus stops in the departures area of Atocha station, under 10 mins level walk from the hotel. Rooms overlooking the busy Paseo del Prado are surprisingly quiet, and most traffic is hidden by trees. Local bus and taxi facilities are close at hand.
Rooms have been recently refurbished and are of adequate size with tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfasts are served in a large area with ample seating and a wide range of food options. The hotel bar serves a range of food but the local area provides a wide range of meal options through the day and evening.
Staff are helpful and housekeeping is efficient. At peak times, lifts can be a little slow.
The hotel is under ten minutes on foot from the three main galleries... Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Bornemisa, or about 20 from the Gran Via shopping area. The large Retiro Park and Botanic Gardens are on the opposite side of the Paseo del Prado from the hotel.
