Nestled in a tranquil setting, Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa earns rave reviews for its spotless, detail-oriented accommodations and serene, luxurious atmosphere. Guests frequently extol the stunning views and the high-end amenities, including a sumptuous spa and delectable dining options. While the staff's professionalism and friendliness are often highlighted, some travelers have experienced service inconsistencies.

Detailed Reviews
We have just returned from 4 nights at Aghadoe Heights. We normally go abroad so like many others this was an unexpected staycation for 2020! We were delighted with the stay and the hotel in general exceeded our expectations. Some of the recent reviews mentioned that the hotel was looking a little tired, but we didn't find that and our Lake View room was recently refurbished with a plush carpet, and new furniture including two beautiful armchairs that faced the lake. The only area that was showing any wear and tear was the skirting and architraves in the corridor, but that's being really fussy. Some other reviews said that the hotel wasn't really five star standard but we found the quality comparable to other five star hotels in Ireland, but perhaps shy of the top quality available in five star hotels abroad such as in the Middle East, Greece etc, so it depends what you are comparing it to.
The breakfast was standard but perfectly acceptable, but the evening meals (twice) in the Lake Room were excellent, with generous portions of high quality food (special mention for the chowder, which was delicate and fragrant). Service was quite prompt and the courses arrived at the time that you would expect during a relaxing meal. The waitress forgot to bring dessert menus one evening but apologised and discounted our bill to make up for it which was unnecessary but was a nice touch. The staff were friendly and chatty but not obtrusive, especially the concierge and the waiting staff at dinner. The hotel is coping well with COVID issues and we felt reassured the entire time. Breakfast could be booked for 8, 9 or 10am and we chose 8am each morning which worked out well as the breakfast room was quiet. While the thermal suite was not open, the spa was still providing treatments and the massage I received (from Aine) was excellent. The balcony was spacious but it was unusual that it didn't provide cover on a rainy day as the balcony floors above are open decking. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and will be back.

Immaculate rooms with breathtaking views of Killarney’s lakes and mountains as well as the excellent service provided by the lovely staff made this hotel experience a trip to remember. Starting from check-in to dietary requirements in the restaurant, everyone was making me feel welcome, safe and well looked after. The stunning lake view room was beautifully kept and the fast speed WiFi connection made the few work meetings I still had to join manageable. Will definitely be back and would recommend this gorgeous hotel & spa to anyone who’s planning a trip to Kerry and enjoys the comfort and standards of luxury accommodation.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
As someone who travels for work and a couple who holiday multiple times a year in 4 or 5star hotels frequently we have always said that the Aghadoe Heights was our favorite hotel in the world. I would have written a number of reviews to same effect.
Sadly I believe Sept 2020 was our last stay.
I don't believe this is still the standard of a 5 star hotel.
Our visit was during COVID. All staff wore visors and are all super friendly and still the hotels best attribute.
There has been a number of scale backs in terms of service:
Although it is advertised there was no turn down service.
We were not advised on check in that there was an option to avail of hotel shuttle to the town. We thought it was stopped due to covid-19 but did see it in use during our stay.
It was noted other guests were presented with a voucher for preferred rates in sister hotels upon check out. This was not presented to all departing guests.
The buffet breakfast is a very slim version of what it once was with little to zero effort to ensure continuity of service offering in given environment dispite the available space to be able to offer this.
Bread sitting under damp napkins for people to toast
Slim cereal selection.
Pastries left on open plate without screen.
Hot breakfast selection reduced.
When you once ordered pancakes you got 2 now it's a portion of 1and we couldn't help but notice bare presentation of breakfast since previous stays.
Bedroom had no water on arrival which at a 5star hotel would be a minimum expectation.
Bathroom toiletries voya but limited.
Bedroom getting tired looking
Our shower leaked all over our bathroom floor which was an accident I luckily avoided given I am expecting.
Bed is comfortable.
In room dining menu also scaled back version available.
Pool in need of refurbishment.
Again I can't stress how professional and pleasent the staff are.

Aghadoe review
We recently spent a few nights at the Aghadoe as part of our honeymoon.
Unfortunately the stay was extremely disappointing and I am writing this review to try and give others the opportunity to save their money and spend elsewhere.
We arrived on a sunny day and it must be said the location and the view from the lake view rooms are fabulous. The hotel has the potential to be great and I think that was what was so frustrating.
The reception staff were useless. When asked simple questions like for a map of the town or restaurant recommendations they didn’t know and would bleep a concierge (who would be running bags) to come. The concierges were overall helpful but for the front of house to be so unhelpful in a 5 star I found very surprising. We in fact got more helpful information from Tara in the spa than the front of house and I think a little enthusiasm and effort would go a long way here.
We ate dinner two nights: once in the heights bar and one night in the lake view. The food was mediocre and you certainly get a lot more value for money and tastier meals eating in Killarney so highly advise taking a short taxi into the town for food instead.
Breakfast was horrendous. The “avocado” on toast was clearly from a squeezee bottle, the fry had clearly been sitting in an oven for hours as was dry as a rock and didn’t come with the beans on the menu and the eggs Benedict came with a yellow stained water that I assume was supposed to be the sauce.
Dining service was always rushed and one morning after being seated we waited 45 minutes to give out breakfast order. We had a good experience with Maura in the heights bar and overall the waiting staff were polite but just appeared inexperienced and rushed off their feet. Food/ drinks were brought when ready but rarely did anyone “check in” on us so if you wanted something like a glass of water/ condiment you could be waiting quite some time.
The swimming pool is small but fit for purpose and the jacuzzi overlooks the lakes which is lovely (although if a sunny day has an outdoor terrace that people may be sitting looking directly in on you). I appreciate with the lockdowns this probably hasn’t has use in quite some time but there was still visible green algae on some of the tiles around the edge of the jacuzzi so a deep clean would not go amiss here.
The spa was excellent and one of the only saving graces of the stay. Both of our treatments were lovely, the relaxation areas were fabulous and all the staff here were excellent and couldn’t have done more for you.
Having stayed in other 5 star hotels throughout the country I can say that this is very subpar to their competitors. 5 star usually equals excellent service but that’s exactly what this hotel lacks. Please don’t be misled by others reviews swayed by the views and or spa experience. Do book a day visit to the spa but please otherwise do not waste your money staying here! A 5 star price tag but without the experience.

Firstly, I would like to personally thank you for choosing Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa for your family break away. I am so sorry and disappointed that your stay did not live up to your expectations. I have shared your feedback with our management team and each department here in the hotel.. We have taken all your comments on board and apologise that our service or food offering on this occasion did not provide our usual five-star experience. We strive to achieve exceptional high standards throughout the property in particular our cleanliness, service, quality food and facilities which we offer. I do take your points with regards to the service, your comments are very fair, and we will take them on board immediately and put procedures in place to ensure this poor level of service does not happen again.

We were told that we could not check in until 5pm because there was no electricity in the hotel, the manager agreed that we could have a late check out of 2pm which I was happy with. There was only one receptionist on the desk when my partner and I arrived at the hotel, we were left standing for over 10 minutes while she spoke to a customer about a dinner booking for next week. I believe she should have priortised the customer standing in front of her instead of continuing on a phone call for over 10 minutes about a dinner booking for the following week. She was extremely slow at checking us in and was not very friendly. She then told us that we could only have breakfast at 8am or 9am...which I was shocked at. We did not eat dinner at the hotel but when we came back we asked a different lady at reception about the breakfast slots and she kindly told us that we could order room service breakfast for any time we wanted free of charge as an alternative, why weren't we told this upon check in? this lady was extremely helpful and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable and the shower was also nice, the staff in the bar were very professional and the cocktails were delicious. The following morning our room phone rang at 12 o'clock and we were told it is time to check out, my partner had to inform the receptionist that we had a late check out and she said that we hadn't requested it, we explained that the manager had agreed a 2pm check out with us over the phone prior to arrival. This was completely unprofessional and shows poor communication between management and staff for a 5 star hotel. On check out the receptionist just took payment and did not even ask how our stay was or if we had enjoyed it...she was quite cold towards us actually. This was our first and last stay at this hotel and from our experience we would not recommend staying here. €300 - you are only paying for the view!!

We spent three nights here and couldn't fault the room, of indeed the housekeeping, all of which met the five-star benchmark. It is in other areas that this hotel fails to hit the mark.
Breakfasts were no more than adequate for a hotel at this level. Poor selection of cereals, fruit and juices. Cooked breakfasts were ok, but again this is supposed to be a five star hotel.
We tried dinner in the bar area on the first night we were there, intending to dine in the restaurant on subsequent nights if our experience on the bar area was good. We decided to go out for dinner on the other two nights, unwilling to pay premium prices for cold and tasteless food.
The pool area is of only token size, totally inadequate for the numbers using it. It gives the impression that it was built as part of a smaller hotel that was subsequently extended.
On the plus side, the staff were mostly very pleasant, and the young woman who played piano and sang in the bar area is a real asset. My partner also reported that the spa treatments were very good and that staff there were very professional and very nice to deal with.
All in all though, this hotel could be better if it tried, but maybe, given that it is in Killarney, they don't have to. For those prices though, you'd expect more attention to detail.

The hotel was alright, but for the price we paid it definitely was not worth the money. The view in the room was absolutely amazing, however there were a number of issues.
There were a few insects inside the room. There was also an issue with cleanliness regarding dust and spider webs. On the first night the room was missing a set of towels. On the second, cleaning had taken both our robes and only replaced one. The kitchen also forgot our breakfast the second morning despite us submitting the order for room service, reception said they had seen the order but didn’t know what happened. The hotel still charged us the room service fee despite breakfast being over an hour late and impacting our plans for the day. Breakfast was sub-par. It’s also the first 5 star hotel room I’ve stayed in that had wallpaper peeling in a number of spots on the walls. The bed was made up of two wooden frame twin beds screwed together and had a rather uncomfortable spot down the middle. On our first night we wanted to book at taxi into town at 8 for a dinner reservation, the hotel suggested we take their complimentary shuttle at 8 instead, however we were left waiting in the lobby until nearly 8:20 and wound up late for our reservation. It was a nice place, but the price didn’t match the room or the service.
I have seen a good number of other reviews here with the same or similar problems where the response from management is “your experience is not representative of our usual high standards”. I’m afraid they are. Standards have long since slipped here. Either lower your prices or raise your standards.

Having decided to go on our honeymoon in the Aghadoe hotel I contacted the hotel privately to arrange making my wife arrival special. I arranged with the hotel to have champagne, chocolates, petals and a bouquet of flowers in the room for our arrival only to arrive and find just the champagne and chocolates I sent an email to the hotel stating I was disappointed as this was meant to be special they replied apologising for the delay in the flowers and that the petals were to be on the bed in the evening when turning down the bed absolute nonsense.
The petals actually arrived 3 days later in the afternoon you could not make this up, just down to poor management and a complete lack in attention to detail that you expect from a 5 Star hotel. In the 5 days we were there no one came to us personally to apologise. The fact that I was also paying for this disaster it was not that they were not being paid for this special moment.
On checking out I told the receptionist that I was not happy with the hotel on how poor they were in making our honeymoon arrival special, she asked if I wanted the manager I explained no as it was to little to late and it would not change back what happened. I paid in full I did not look for any refund as my gripe was purely on how poor they were in arranging a special surprise on our arrival and money back could never compensate for the disappointment I felt on arrival.
The hotel needs to improve on attention to detail and an understanding of how important certain events are in peoples lives and the impact that their incompetence have on guests.

The hotel needs to improve on attention to detail and an understanding of how important certain events are in peoples lives and the impact that their incompetence have on guests.

Dear noelgaffney475, Firstly, may we congratulate you both on your recent wedding we hope you enjoyed a day packed full with wonderful memories and thank you for choosing Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa for your honeymoon stay. I am so sorry and disappointed that your stay did not live up to your expectations We have investigated your comments in relation to the flowers and rose petals not being in place upon your arrival. Having arrived at the hotel earlier then the check in time of pm our front office team made our accommodation team aware that you had arrived earlier and checked you in prior to the check in time of pm. The flowers which we had arranged via a local florist was requested prior to pm so hence the requested bouquet not being in place. Our turn-down service team works their magic after pm and with a Do Not Disturb Sign in place on your room door for two consecutive nights this added room amenity of rose petals on turn-down could not be put in place until day three. We fully take all your comments on board, and appreciate that the small touches which did not take place on the day of your arrival took from the overall enjoyment of your stay with us. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you both back to Aghadoe on another occasion in the near future. Kind regards The Management and Staff in Aghadoe

Had a really enjoyable stay in Aghadoe Heights Hotel, which was such a treat after the lockdown - this being our only break away this year. Every staff member we came in contact with was really warm, friendly and efficient, and it was good to see that the hotel /staff are taking Covid so seriously with sanitisers, face masks, etc. (which must be vey difficult).. We felt very safe! Rooms are very comfortable and the views/setting of the hotel is to die for - just stunning! We ate all meals in the hotel and found service excellent and the food delicious. We will definitely be back!

We stayed here for 3 nights in a lake view room to celebrate our birthdays. The staff are very welcoming and when friends sent bottles of Prosecco/Flowers to us the staff made sure they were sitting nicely in our room after we came back from the spa which was lovely.
The spa treatments were fabulous and we felt really comfortable that they request all guests to wear masks in the spa and the therapists wear visors. My therapist in particular had excellent hands and it’s clear she is well trained and very experienced. The thermal suite is closed for obvious reasons but I would still recommend getting a treatment.
We had dinner in the Lake Room one night and the staff were very accommodating by having our desserts delivered to our room after dinner! We also had afternoon tea which was lovely looking out over the Lake.
The only constructive point I would note is that more waiting staff are needed particularly at breakfast time and sometimes in the bar - but I think this is a teething problem with the hotel only having recently reopened since lockdown and a number of new staff having started. The staff are doing the best they can but it’s a very popular hotel which leads me to say more staff might help the guest experience in such an upmarket hotel.
Lastly - go for the lake view room if you’re staying here - well worth it! Thanks to all the staff forma wonderful stay!

Thank you for choosing the Aghadoe Heights as the venue for your joint birthdays, i am glad to hear that you enjoyed most areas within the hotel which contributed to a wonderful stay. We appreciate your feedback in relation to the waiting staff at breakfast, they were at the time adapting to the new procedure in place within the hotel to ensure the safety of our guest and staff but I can say they have now settled into the new routine and delivery a 5 star service at breakfast coupled with a warm welcome and good service. We look forward to having you back as our valued guest in the very near future.

The pool is open daily from 8am until 8pm and is complimentary to all guests. The Thermal Suite, Jacuzzi etc will remain closed as per the guidelines. Kindly advise if I can help you further. We look forward to having you as our guest in Aghadoe in the near future.
Any of the rooms on the lake side have stunning views. I think we were in room 303.
Our Lakeview suite didn't but it had a large walk in shower. Oppulent in every other way though.
Yes, every room has a hair dryer, robes, slippers, bathroom amenities, a safe and a Nespresso machine and kettle with tea/coffee supplies.
