Very clean and good Covid safety
Good location about .5km from town centre and park entrance
Friendly local staff (Niall serviced us a number of times and was very good)
Pool decent size and enjoyed by kids (you need to book slot in advance to ensure social distance)
Nice covered, outdoor area for drinks
Pet friendly
Decent pint of Guinness served (not perfect each time but good enough)
Minor downsides:
the breakfast options are good but taste a little disappointing (the smoked salmon was not great) and the servers sometimes only offered basic options but we had a better er service (eg Niall) get us the others eg kids wanted grapefruit juice which was available but required more effort from server
We were in room over the service delivery side. There was noise early morning from deliveries (including a noisy reversing alarm-not great at 6am!)
We did not eat in the restaurant so can not comment on that.
Overall I'd be happy to give a 5 star on basis I'd go back again.
We had dinner one night in the hotel and the food was top class but unfortunately the service let it down. We ordered red wine and when it arrived, it was placed on the table, not opened for us, not tasted, or poured, just left on the table. The starter plate had only been removed when the main course arrived. Such a shame because the food was so perfect. The staff were always friendly, even at dinner but the young man at dinner was nervous and needed more training on how to serve.
We had drinks in the bar each evening and had afternoon tea one lunch time in the bar and it was absolutely faultless. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. Shame there is no TV in the bar or anywhere down stairs. We wanted to watch the rugby and because of current guidelines we couldn’t watch it anywhere else. Every other hotel we asked at, would only reserve tables for their own guests because the match was on.
The room was nice and spacious and relaxing. The bed was big and cosy. Their is no tea/coffee making facilities in the room but I had read on the website that I could ask for a tea tray to the room so I called reception and she said no. I asked if she even just had a kettle I could use to make coffee in the room and she said no.
Toiletries in the room were nice but I would expect a shampoo and separate conditioner. Robe and slippers are a nice touch.
I would return to Randles again because of the fact that it’s within walking distance of absolutely everything and plenty of parking. Staff are nice and friendly and hotel was nice and clean and pool area was nice.
There was no guest information in the room about the facilities available in the room (pool opening times, menu for restaurant, WiFi etc). The bar appeared to have a very limited selection, while there may have been a greater selection available, no drinks menu was presented and the visible choice was poor.
The dinner was totally overpriced at €32.50 for a 2 course meal. While the food was very good, the same could be bought much cheaper down the road. The breakfast buffet was very limited, but the cook to order menu was extensive. When we returned on the second day from our travels, our room cards didn’t work, no worries that was sorted very quickly. When we got into the room, we found our room had been serviced even though we were told that it wouldn’t be, naturally we had left our belongings about in the room and I even had some wedding cake left in the room from a family wedding over the weekend. The wedding cake and my plate were nowhere to be found. I returned to reception to find out why our room had been serviced, perhaps some mix up with the booking as the cards also weren’t working. The housekeeper was at reception and got very defensive insisting that the new staff in housekeeping must have went in and serviced the room. I can’t help but wonder, if it is the hotels policy not to service the room of a guest, why did the housekeeper commit to cleaning when they seen our belonging scattered about the room.
We could hear the elevator from our room every time it went up and down along with every word our neighbours said as our room had an adjoining door - we even heard their 04:30 alarm. We went to the swimming pool but didn’t stay long as the algae and grime on the tiles at water level of the pool was mingin’ for a 4 star hotel.
On the third day, our cards stopped working after 12 noon again - another trip to reception to get them reactivated.
It wasn’t all bad though, the bed was very comfortable, the room was clean and a good size.
Given the amount of good reviews the hotel has, and that we stayed here before many years ago we were so disappointed. We won’t be returning for a another stay.
I am not being a crank when I say that they have definitely the worst food in any commercial establishment we’ve been in maybe ever!! Just scroll down and see others comments from this month to confirm the same. With rooms all over 175 a night it’s expected that dinner is at very least decent ( see photo attached) Their explanation was covid but as we’d been dining in FAR busier spots in Killarney all week we know that it can be done and done well.
The front of house are clearly doing their best and tried to accommodate us as we wanted to eat outside or in a space with decent ventilation (this week having seen a shocking Covid spike) . The problem is that the outside seating is for drinks only.
Outside they have safe space for seating easily 30 people ( the restaurant had no more than 15-20 stuck inside) so why not let people eat in the sunshine…
The wine with Dinner was excellent but our second bottle ( now allowed back outside) was corked . We felt embarrassed about having tried to get food served outside and now the corked wine so we slipped away from our table and kindly asked front desk where could we get a drink in town. She very kindly indicated a few spots but asked why we were leaving. We explained and she insisted on a new bottle on the house. Delighted we sat back down when suddenly another staff member arrived. He marched up and began to question the veracity of our claim loudly in a crowded bar. We were mortified ! We looked like complete dic*s after trying to slip out and enjoy Killarney. He made us feel absolutely terrible.
We drank quickly the gift replacement and straight away went to town.
Rooms are comfortable and basic many facing a courtyard which makes them terribly overlooked. We had to have the curtains closed at all times. The ventilation is clearly on low to save energy so the bathrooms are constantly damp .
We felt that this long rambling complaint was needed as it’s clear that the staff have a high turnover and the clientele is being robbed. The “Sommelier “ and our waitress made us feel like we had come uninvited and were basically in a strop. This suggests questionable management. ( bill for entire stay 250 euros) I cant see how they think this is a decent offer.
I would like to reinforce our thanks to the front of house, especially the woman who booked me in and later brought us to our table ( names cant be found as currently their site is down..)
The restaurant staff were kind and offered to bring the food to our room and the pool staff were both friendly and helpful.
No one person in particular are at fault its just not set up for a comfortable stay if you plan on bringing a pet.
The room itself was huge with large chairs, tables, window seats, electric fireplace and TV with soundbar and on all 3 nights we had the most comfortable sleep we have ever had in a hotel bed. The bathroom had a rainfall shower plus a tub with a TV built into the wall and luxury toiletries.
Cooked breakfast to order on all 3 mornings was superb with lots of variety at the buffet in addition. My partner is gluten free and as a result can be made to feel a bit awkward in some places and/or find it tricky, but Randles offered excellent gluten free options for both breakfast and dinner with zero fuss.
We stayed Wednesday to Saturday and whilst naturally much busier on Friday than midweek, there was no drop-off in the care and attention from the staff.
Location is literally a 5 minute stroll into Killarney Town Centre and therefore the perfect base for those looking to explore the centre or surrounds.
All staff we encountered along the way were lovely, from reception/breakfast/bar etc, and special mention to the lady working in accommodation on Friday and Saturday morning who was so friendly and did a great job in doing up our room long past the normal morning hours.
Unfortunately we didn't get to see the legendary Dexter Randles, although upon enquiry were told by a staff member that he was last heard from on vacation in Las Vegas! 😂
We were gutted to have to leave Randles and go back to reality, which says a lot about how good this stay was. From a frequent traveller who lives in Ireland, the "3 nights for 2" offer with a cooked breakfast included each morning in a property of this quality and in this location is one of the best value stays you will find in Europe, let alone Ireland.
We will definitely be back far sooner rather than later and are already planning our next trip!
