The Dean Cork hotel garners praise for its friendly staff and pristine cleanliness, with most guests appreciating the well-maintained rooms and facilities. Its location is a hit for being close to the city center, yet some reviewers warn of train noise. The hotel's amenities, like the trendy pool and unique room features, are popular, though opinions on value for money vary due to high-cost extras and noise disruptions. While rooms are stylish, their size and soundproofing receive mixed reviews. The vibrant atmosphere is a highlight, though it may not suit those seeking tranquility.

This isn’t the most central of hotels but still the location is only 10/15mins from town centre and being to park so close at the train carpark was great. This hotel, for me, was a little style over substance.

The staff are lovely and friendly (check in, Sophie’s and cleaning staff) and I can’t fault them at all for helpfulness and friendliness.

I was surprised we weren’t told about the hotels facilities when we checked in as it would have been nice to experience them. It was only on leaving I noticed the advert in the lift for a pool.

We went B&B and I regret that. Given the cost, the food wasn’t great and when you just want a breakfast it was a bit pretentious (tasted better than Sophie’s in Dublin though).

The cost of the room doesn’t reflect what you get, it’s very basic. For just under €250 a night, I expect at least a facecloth and a wardrobe space to hang clothes. A few pegs in the room doesn’t work for dresses and shirts and just clutters a small space. Having the mini bar items exposed and on the wall just adds to the cluttery feel of the room and it looked like an upmarket Generator.

Also, is the bedside water complimentary? We weren’t told if we had water, just told we were to be charged for the mini bar if we used. In fact when booking no one mentioned that €100 that would be deducted from a credit card and not refunded until check out (and then it takes a few days to go back on your card). Good job we had it! I’m sure it’ll be argued it’s in small print but it needs to be made clear in the room booking section as it’s kind of blindsiding. Our room faced the train tracks so it’s very noisy at 7am but if you’re a good sleeper it won’t bother you.

The shower is AMAZING! Shower products are good and the towels provided are very nice - the robes and slippers are a nice touch. The bed is very comfortable and the TV is good quality with the usual Irish channels. I didn’t see the Wi-Fi code anywhere but may have missed it as I didn’t need it. Clientele attracted also seem decent - didn’t hear a peep outside for a weekend where the bar was very busy. It has a lovely relaxed vibe in the lobby bar.

The Dean misses the point on what other hotels just do as a matter of course. Also the Nespresso machine uses L’or capsule not Nespresso, in case that’s not to everyone’s taste.

We had a lovely time but it was part gifted and so I didn’t mind the above in this case too much; I’d have been a bit let down if I had paid the full cost.

Would we stay again? Maybe if knew what else it was offering we might as it just seemed so basic and there are hotels with better locations. I wouldn’t say never as it’s nice but it would be room only.

Fantastic décor and exceptional detailing from a design perspective.

However, as an expensive hotel, management & staff need to focus on the operational side of things, especially staff training.

An initial problem is that at check in customers are expected to queue through the bar area where other patrons are seated. The music is too loud to accurately hear the staff at the check in desk.

The female staff member could't really be bothered trying to find our booking at check in and made out that it was the fault of our booking engine, and sent us to one side while she and her male colleague assisted others behind us. After almost 30 mins (no comp tea, coffee or beverage or acknowledgement from the female staff member) we approached the male team member who apologised immediately believing his colleague had sorted our issue. It transpired that it was a problem with the hotel's reservation system!!!

We got to our room in time to turn around and go to Sophie's on the top floor to meet friends for dinner. Positives are the décor, views, and friendly staff. Negatives are the small menu, the loud noise coming from the speakers (which meant we were almost shouting to be heard), having to ask staff members multiple times for water, etc., the prices, and the chef's inability to cook steak to order.

Drinks in the bar afterwards brought up similar issues with inattentive / ineffective staff. It wasn't that they were run off their feet busy, but they were poorly organised and didn't appear to have distinct roles or sections. We went from being ignored to having 3 team members ask if we were ok for everything in less than 5 minutes. Also customers vaping in the middle of the room directly in front of check in went unnoticed and unchallenged.

Breakfast was a bit of a fiasco both mornings. Waiting in excess of 30 minutes for tea / coffee. One morning the cooked breakfast arrived before the hot drinks, which were eventually dropped to the table without tea spoons, milk or sugar. (We had to ask 3 times for spoons, milk & sugar) Both mornings we got the apology that they had "run out of coffee". If you can't get the basics right for the numbers staying there, then sell less rooms until you can cater for them properly.

The room itself (5th floor suite) was spacious, well decorated, comfortable and jam packed with gadgets, an array of over-priced munchies and a very well stocked fridge and minibar which would be sufficient to keep you in your room all weekend. But the poor seals around the windows meant we could hear traffic noise and shouting of revelers outside up to 4am both nights. For a suite/penthouse floor there is also extremely poor acoustic insulation between rooms - we can tell you how many sugars our neighbors have in their tea, what television shows they watched and how many times they went to the loo during the night!!!

On a more serious note, there were no notices displayed on the back of the bedroom doors of the procedures to be followed by guests in the event of a fire.

I’m just back from a lovely stay in the new Dean hotel - Cork’s newest and coolest hotel experience. So did it live up to the hype? Here’s some of the highlights and pitfalls of our visit:

Highlights:
1. The staff were really helpful and polite.
2. We got complementary Prosecco on arrival
3. The cocktail bar in the lobby was well designed and stylish and it was nice to have a pint….in a public place after the years’ Covid restrictions.
4. The rooms had a really cool retro feel with huge tv, large smeg minibar fridge and large range of snacks in the room (but these came with a price tag!)
5. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in - I’m not even joking!
6. The rainfall shower was out of this world! I think I was in there for 20 minutes!!
7. Sophie’s Restaurant - the decor and design is really well done. The view was incredible and the food was amazing. I had the nicest calamari starter and brownie for dessert. The pizza was a bit disappointing but it didn’t take away from the Sophies’ experience too much.

There were however some opportunities for improvement, but I think many of these are just teething problems as the hotel gets into its stride.

Pitfalls
1. The tap in the bathroom was leaking when turned on.
2. We made dinner and breakfast reservations when booking and none of these had been recorded. There was no table allocated for us but fortunately they found us a spot. That would have ruined the trip if there were no tables available.
3. The bar had no cordial for mixers! We had to change our drinks order because of this.
4. There was no Earl Gray tea available, despite it being on the menu.
5. The staff in the restaurant at dinner did not know the menu and could not answer basic questions. They had to run the chef for clarifications for simple things (e.g. what is on the pizza).
6. We ordered no cheese on one of the pizzas, and it came covered in cheese.
7. We were waiting 40 minutes for dessert after mains were cleared. We had to remind the waitress to bring them.
8. After dinner we went down to the cocktail bar and were trying to get the waitresses attention for 30 minutes! By the time we caught her attention, they had to stop serving.

Despite these teething problems, the pros definitely trumped and I really enjoyed my birthday at the Dean! Can’t wait to go back soon!!

Disappointing stay at the Dean. It was a 1 night getaway with 3 friends to celebrate our 40ths. 2 double rooms, including cocktail, dinner and breakfast at 420 euro. Check in 4PM- very late I thought and at that our room wasn't ready until 4.30pm, so we had to wait. In defense maybe with covid everything delayed? Checkout is 11. Rooms are tiny, matchbox size, no wardrobes, no bathrobes, just basic bath towels. Filled full of treats and drinks right in your face so very hard to resist and completely overpriced...most definitely not a good idea if you had kids! Awful temptation. We went to the thermal suite, we were so excited . Looks super impressive ,really cool pool with large jacuzzi, but it was FREEZING!! Even the jacuzzi, we sat in it shivering. Steam room and sauna open, they were lovely thankfully! I did not like the food at all, 3 course dinner included with the package. It was just bland, wine included with the meal was served in a glass jug, no idea what it was. We were hastily asked to leave the table after our dessert to go back downstairs. The rookie top restaurant is impressive with gorgeous views, I would recommend booking outdoor tables for dinner and breakfast. Breakfast was not nice at all, I had avocado on toast and it was covered in bechamel sauce!! Yuck coffee was cold. I do not like to write bad reviews but I feel when you are paying enough money for something we are all entitled to value for money. Big thumbs down for me. The positives are its location, right beside train and 5 min walk in the city. It has a very retro vibe, I think the instagrammers would love it. I felt very old!! Its def for younger clientele, most definitely not for kids.

Mid week package stay

Room was not ready on arrival , finally got key at 5.30pm; their was an angry exchange between accommodation staff member and receptionist right in front of us when she asked were their any rooms ready

Room was lovely, love inclusion of Cork based artists, bed clothes inside out, sheet just laying on mattress and room not cleaned to high standard. Finger prints everywhere & tiles in bathroom not cleaned properly (they’ll be a challenge with the matte finish)

Dinner was gorgeous although coffee afterwards undrinkable

Breakfast was nice but 3/4 poached eggs were hard ; waitress totally noticed but ignored

Finally : charges made to my card after leaving of items we certainly did not use. While this was rectified after a few emails exchanged , it didn’t surprise me that it happened. Room are “stacked” with food , drinks alcohol in a somewhat distasteful manner, with an air of wanting to “catch you out” with additional cost.

I was so looking forward to staying here and unfortunately was super disappointed.
Upon arrival, there was no signage regarding the parking situation, or advising you to park in Cork train station and paying 8 euro or so for parking. Perhaps this could have been mentioned on the confirmation email.
The queue to check in was out the door of the hotel and we didn't check in until after 4pm. This was not acceptable especially with covid guidelines.
As mentioned in other people's reviews, the deposit situation of 50 euro was also not mentioned pre booking.
I dont understand why they would stock the rooms full of these items, when they cost a fortune, almost felt like they were trying to temp you into buying them.
The rooms were small but decor was beautiful.
The cups which were in the room were dirty, we had to wash them several times with boiling water and didn't use them in the end.
Dinner was included in our package and the food was beautiful but the service was below par, our dessert order was lost, leaving us waiting a half an hour for dessert while not one waiter/waitress came to check us.
Breakfast was a disaster. We were told when checking in that 9.30 was the only time we could book breakfast as they were busy. We arrived for breakfast at 09.25 and was seated out in the terrace. Our order was taken and my cup of tea delivered but no tea was delivered for my partner. Noone offered us water etc. At 10.15 a waitress came and told us they had misplaced our order and they were sorry. They then brought tea for my partner and assured us the breakfast was on the way. 10.30am and still no sign of breakfast. We were getting ready to leave when breakfast was finally delivered at 10.40am. My partner who had ordered the fry, recieved no toast and we not no fresh pit of tea, but at that stage we just ate and left as felt there was no point.
Check out was again a queue out the door and a half an hour wait to check out. We told the receptionist about our stay and she gave us a 25 euro voucher but to be honest we will not use it.
Save your money, it certainly was not worth 340 euro.

I was really looking forward to staying here.
The first problem was trying to find the car park. An absolute night mare. Rang reception and they couldn’t even explain it to us and didn’t have a correct eircode. When we did find it and go to reception they laughed and said that always happens people. I suggested they go to the carpark and send their location to someone and get the eircode. They had no interest.
Next up we had to pay€250 in advance incase we used any of the totally unnecessary bar in the room ( will come back to that )
So we arrive up to our room. The room is so small it just about fits the bed and then there are all these unnecessary shelves stocked with sweets/crisps/alcohol and roses is the mini bar. There is also a fridge full and this is why we paid the €250 deposit.
We leave the room and head back to the lobby. They don’t want you to order your drink so you sit and wait for a bartender. Eventually they took our order and at this stage we are stressed out coz of the parking incident and the tiny room. When they come back with the drink the bar man throws a beer mat at the table. Followed by my husbands pint of Guinness. Unsettled and dripping all over the glass. Which he then places beside the beer mat. We nearly started laughing it was so bad.
We move upstairs to Sophie’s roof top.
Now this is where the story changes. Upstairs is amazing great staff and we had the most amazing 3 courses and lovely wine. This kinda saved the day until we went to bed 🤦‍♀️
The bed rolled in the middle and squeezed to turn left or right. Then the nose starts at 6am the train station across the street constant noise. Then the building site opens and my God the noise. Non stop beeping and big machinery.
Terrible nights sleep. What a shame. Maybe there are rooms that are not beside the noise.
Would not stay here again but would definitely come back to Sophie’s.

Hi jeanbellamario Thank you very much for the review and comments. It is really Disappointing to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. In terms of the deposit all we ask for is €100 so the price you mentioned in your review is including your room rate. In terms of the bedroom, we have placed the mini bar and munchies tray there for your comfort so you can enjoy some drinks and sweet treats without leaving your room. So happy to hear that you enjoyed Sophies, and we look forward to seeing you soon. Cheers Shane

Myself & my partner stayed here midweek and was so looking forward to the break away and dinner and some cocktails. I was told at check in that we would be able to have drinks until about 12pm/1am at the bar so I thought that was ideal. Dinner was booked at Sophie’s that evening but only not residents could sit & drink outside which was disappointing as we wanted the outdoor area. The food was great but I felt we were very rushed. After leaving the hotel & coming back at 10.30pm, we went up to Sophie’s to get a cocktail in hopes of sitting outside and was told we can’t be there and to go down to the reception area for a drink which we did, and that area was finished serving in 30 minutes. We just had one drink and left really disappointed in the confusion as we wouldn’t have come back to the hotel if they weren’t letting us drink at the rooftop ( there was plenty of non residents outside on the terrace with cocktails at that time! )
So then we went to the room to order some much wanted room service for a treat from the menu above the phone & was told that there’s no room service now even though the menu stated ‘late night bites - 10pm - 6am’ ? This was at 11.30pm.

Really disappointed as I was really looking forward to the stay & felt we didn’t get to enjoy it!

Hi U2430JQreginab, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. My apologies over the experience you had in the Lobby Bar and the fact that you could not get back up to Sophie's for a drink. With outdoor dining so popular at the moment our terrace is full of guests having dinner there. The terraces are so popular at the moment and they are booked out weeks in advance. In terms of the late night menu I am sorry for the confusion over this. We hope to see you very soon. Regards Shane

I booked to stay here as a post- lockdown treat and I was really looking forward to it. The hotel has a fabulous decor and has the nicest hotel gym I have ever used however, totally overpriced for what you get. The reception desk is definitely not obvious and wasn't big enough to deal with the amount of people checking in/out as we queued out the door for 30 mins just to check out. There was also an additonal €100 deposit required on arrival which was not mentioned prior to arrival. There is also a tray charge of €5 to have anything brough to your room which I have never seen before and I've worked in several hotels.

The dinner is Sophies was gorgeous and service was great. Our waitress Helena was brilliant and it was only her second day! Breakfast could have been made a lot tastier, the avocado and poached eggs was standard and definitely could be made a lot nicer for future. Our coffees came cold on the second day, we sent them back and received another round of cold coffees which is just not great. The main female supervisor in the bar downstairs was very friendly and attentive and the man (Sam) I think on reception was so lovely.

Overall we were very disappointed with our stay for the €300 each we paid for two nights it was not worth it at all. The rates charged are not in line with the standard of service delivered, I am sad to say I would not recommend this hotel to friends or family and the reputation of The Dean/Sophies in Dublin is doing a lot more this hotel than the hotel itself.

Stayed here as my first staycation away with my boyfriend. I’ve seen so many videos about this hotel online so I booked it with great excitement! I had very high expectations of this hotel.

The room is so modern, I loved it! There’s a very big TV aswell with Netflix and NOW TV which was great. The bed is also incredibly comfortable. Only down side about the room was no wardrobe but if you’re only there for a few nights it’s ok. Also- ask for a room not facing the train station or you’ll be kept awake all night.

The shower is also amazing! I must say house keeping do a great job as the room was absolutely spotless.

Had dinner in Sophie’s both night of our stay and it was just excellent. Special mention to Helena for being so kind and looking after us.

Only downside about the whole stay was the “ birthday package” I think it was €38 and it left me extremely disappointed. There was supposed to be “ a bubbly bottle of Prosecco and a bright beautiful chocolate dipped strawberry bouquet” delivered to the room. I rang the night previous to double check that it would be done but when I arrived at the room there was nothing there. I rang down to reception who said they would get it up as soon as possible but it took about 20 minutes and we were trying to get ready for our dinner reservation. What actually came to the room was a bottle of Prosecco and a cup of chopped up strawberries. I’m not one to complain at all but for €38 I was extremely disappointed as what I got was not at all what was advertised. I mentioned this to reception but it wasn’t dealt with at all.
