The Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - City Centre, an IHG hotel, garners positive feedback for its pristine and modern rooms, with comfort being a highlight, although a handful of guests mention the rooms can be on the smaller side and occasionally noisy. Its central location is a hit among travelers, offering easy access to local dining and shopping venues, despite a few finding the route perplexing.
While opinions on value are mixed, with some unexpected charges marring the experience, the hotel's trendy atmosphere and welcoming service are often praised. Modern amenities receive commendation, yet some visitors point out the bar service and room provisions could be improved.

Great location in the city centre. Bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was included - hot or cold buffet. Friendly welcome on arrival and lovely staff. Car park next door. Would highly recommend.

Pros: The hotel was clearly new and freshly painted. The guy at check in was very well natured and, despite having a queue, was extremely efficient, polite, unfazed and even had a laugh with us. The bed was comfy and the blackout curtain and windows were very effective considering the city centre location. Very central for everything we needed, especially the Mailbox and Bullring for shopping and drinking.
Cons: There was a very strange system where you needed a key card to get up from the 1st floor (where reception is located) to your room in the lift. But, we discovered you can use the stairs from the ground floor or the 1st floor and use the stairwell to access any floor without the need for a keycard. Puzzling!
However, the main con was the breakfast experience which was atrocious and like nothing I have seen at a Holiday Inn Express before. When we arrived (at 9am, because the posters in the lift said it was busiest between 10am and 11am) there were only one free table and we had to ask a member of staff to clean it.
This one guy was responsible for clearing all the tables and all he did was bring them back to a trolley in the middle of the restaurant that got fuller and fuller - until someone tried to move it and glasses smashed to the ground. We then watched 5 members of staff take plates/glasses from it and walk them into the kitchen...whilst someone else continued to pile new crockery onto it. I asked one of the young staff why someone didn't move the full trolley into the kitchen and bring out a new one - he had no answer other than they were very busy that morning because Strictly Come Dancing had been on the night before. Surely management knew how many people to expect for breakfast?
That said, the young staff can't be blamed - there wasn't a single manager to be seen until 10.50am when a young woman came out wielding a clipboard and doing very little.
I had to ask for jam and knives and the swing kitchen door was a constant threat to any guest trying to grab a croissant or muffin. By the time we left, there were tables and tables piled high with crockery and guests arriving with nowhere to sit.
So, despite the great hotel, at a good price in a good location, our lasting memory will be the dreadful breakfast experience which left us very reluctant to return.

Stayed for one night at this hotel and could find absolutely no fault with it whatsoever. Had a room on the third floor which was comfortable and scrupulously clean, particularly the shower/bathroom, in fact been in many hotel rooms other than this and at a much higher price and they have come nowhere near to the standard of this hotel. It’s basic no doubt, but everything you need for a comfortable nights stay. The bar was reasonably stocked and the dining area, again very clean, was more than adequate. Breakfast was of a very good standard as well, not massive choice of cooked (bacon, sausage, beans and scrambled eggs) but all well cooked and plenty of it. In addition fruit juice, tea/coffee and cereal and toast all available. Staff all friendly and helpful. Again as I say for the price, unbeatable and highly recommended.

We spent a very comfortable evening there last week as we were up to see a friend's daughter in What's New Pussycat? The hotel reception is on the first floor so can walk up or take the lift up one floor.
This probably the best Holiday Inn Express I have stayed in - very smart, clean and comfortable.
The bedroom was very well designed including power sockets by the beds and with USB sockets too. We were on the 17th floor and had a reall good night's sleep. Breakfast was the usual fare but is included in the price. Deanm on reception was very friendly and helful so a big shout out to him.
Will stay there again

+1
I needed a hotel which was close to New St Station, this Hotel is only 5 mins walk, so handy for been in next to the City Centre. I arrived at 2pm but was told check in wasnt available to 3pm, but they did take in my bags to save lugging them around. when i did check in it was fast and quick the staff are very friendly. My room for some reason was a one for people with mobility needs, as it had a wet room instead of a shower, but the actual room was excellent, very clean and tidy and smelt fresh, I used the Restaurant for evening meal, something for everyone i tried a pizza which was excellent and good value for money. It looks like a popular location for people meeting up before going to the theatre. My sleep was good, nice and quiet comfortable bed and felt refreshed in the morning. Breakfast was excellent such a big choice on cooked and cold offering, the breakfast staff where excellent so friendly and the quality of the food was very good, and some nice touches like faces on the boiled eggs. When im next in Birmingham i would stay at this hotel it ticks all the boxes.

Hotel in general is disgusting, I didn't last long in this hotel at all.
You enter there car park you have homeless drunks around there asking you for money then abusing you if you refuse to give them money, if you enter in on floor one you will also have homeless kipping on there sofas and it stinks of urine. I felt very unsafe it's like a crack den, after entering the lift which isn't cleaned, just has some pathetic attempt of covering/hiding the state of the lifts with some kind of material which is filthy. We arrive into reception the receptionist gave us our keys after paying and filling a sheet out etc. We then arrived at our floor, we walked down the corridor and all the way down it stunk of cannabis with pumping music people screaming and shouting, it was like walking through a block of flats thats been run down in the ghetto or out of a movie where it's rough as hell. I entered the room I could still hear it all it was terrible noise, it's was boiling hot, the aircon was very noisey it was not going to be a good night sleep at all along with a long drive the next day, I just couldn't stick it, so I went back to reception to get a refund as I did not feel safe at all to be told with attitude she couldn't refund it's my problem she could change room for me but that is not going to hide all the other problems. After 20 minutes of explaining the problems and the receptionist not giving a care in the world I was not getting anywhere, I decided to leave and loose my £65 and go else where for my own safety.

Hi neilcp2019 Thanks for using Tripadvisor. I am not sure you have the correct hotel with the review though. Some of the points made do not match our hotel. We don't have our own car park, You can't enter on any different floor, we don't have covering on our lifts. The hotel is only three years old so does not really match the description you have given. Hopefully this can be sorted. Regards Richard General Manager

I recently stayed at this Holiday Inn with my wife after attending a gig at the o2 Institute. The location is great, there’s plenty of local parking (as the hotel doesn’t offer any) and it’s within walking distance of the city centre as well as The Mailbox and it’s surrounding canals.
The guy on the front desk who welcomed us was great and gave us the option of a low floor or high floor room. A nice touch you very rarely see in these enormous city centre hotels. The room was small but suited our needs perfectly. It was clean, comfy and had a decent bed.
The only downside was I noticed on the morning that the walls are paper thin, I’d had a skinful of beer so it didn’t bother me in my coma but can imagine some people struggle to sleep if there’s any banging about from surrounding rooms.
You can’t miss this building if you’re looking for it - it’s an enormous building that looks like it was designed on Minecraft.

Booked a family double room at this hotel for a night away in Birmingham. First impressions waited in a queue where two couples in front also had issues regarding rooms not being ready and early arrival they had booked wasn’t available and wasn’t a guarantee even though they had paid for it. When given our key made way to the room where we were greeted to a small twin room, after booking a double family room. We came back down to address this with reception who argued we hadn’t booked it till we shown him the correct booking details another colleague interfered and said a room is getting cleaned and can be ready in 10/20 mins.
Got up to our room a lot better, however trays of food sat right outside which were still there the next morning … cracks and the lock on the door and metal lock was broken which made me feel they had issues with this room previously. Made me feel my valuables in the room were unsafe.
Next morning breakfast time !! Both gluten free there was a sign to say we do corn flakes and bread …couldn’t find it. We queued like a canteen for breakfast after getting pushed out the way 4 times for people who had waited for sausages to then eat cold scrambled eggs undercooked bacon and beans, while doing this on a dirty table while watching other people sit and was around half naked unwashed and not dressed with no shoes or socks on.
We had this booked for a weekend in august just for a place to stay when back in Birmingham but have cancelled both reservations.

Location was ok in that it was near Birmingham New Street train station, but the area the hotel was situated in wasn't exactly picturesque!
Disliked · Cleanliness of rooms - toilet in room one didn't flush (twin room). Toilet in room two (family room) had a broken seat; bedside tables had clearly previously been broken and were stuck/screwed back together. Hairs in both bathrooms and on bedding. Stains on sofa and walls. Manager was the least customer service orientated person we have ever come across in our many years of travel. We tried to change our booking a week before travelling as only one room required due to one traveller unable to travel - Booking.com were very accommodating and asked the manager of Holiday Inn Express Birmingham City Centre to waive the fees and cancel one of the rooms. Firstly the manager ignored all of their emails and phone calls. Then, when we arrived at the property and showed him the request from Booking.com he refused to do so and would only cancel the twin room if we agreed to pay an additional £30 to have our daughter stay in our family room (sofa bed included in the price of the room)!!!! Our advice would be to avoid this hotel - you will get a far better stay and quality of room at a Premier Inn.

We have reccently stayed in this hotel, we were impressed by the staff who were very friendly unfortunately the room wasn't up to standards we would of expected especially during a pandemic i expected the rooms to be alot cleaner and not have marks which look like sick on the carpet.. which was covered by a bin when we first arrived. Also marks on the curtains too.
We had no TV in our room either due to it being faulty we did tell customer service and they offered to move us rooms but this was at 5pm that evening, due to us unpacking and only staying 1 night we decided it wasn't worth the effort of moving. A nice drink on the house or even offer a late check out would of been a nice complementary offer but nothing was arranged.

Is there anywhere I can leave my luggage on check out day and return for it later in the day please?
I would check with the hotel, I did not have to use that service so I'm not sure. But I have traveled to quite a few places in the UK and they have all been helpful when I needed that kind of service.
No not far at all - about 10 mins max. You may be able to find shortcuts as well.
