I’ve seen, and parked next to, this hotel for many years but haven't stayed in it until now, preferring their big brother the Crowne Plaza near the station. When I have an early train to catch from Newcastle, I always find it easier to stay overnight in the city centre the night before to make things easy and i have to say, my experience in the Holiday Inn Express has ensured that I have another very good option to choose from.

As I approached the hotel, there was a group of Burton-clad work colleagues, obviously checking-in to what must have been a week working in Newcastle. Their priorities were the hotel bar, but mine were to check in and see my room. The reception staff were friendly and efficient, and I was then given a good room - right at the end of the corridor with a window view looking south down St James’ Boulevard. I would place the room at a level above Travelodge, Ibis etc, and maybe on a par with Premier Inn. It had everything I needed for a short stay of one night.

After unpacking I went down to the hotel bar which had gone from being populated with confident middle managers in cheap business attire drinking Stella, to being completely empty, so I was able to enjoy a couple of drinks in peace, sitting next to the window people watching the residents going in and out of the neighbouring flats. The area I was sitting in was obviously the place where breakfast would be served the next morning, and that brings me to one of the key benefits of staying here - the free breakfast.

Overall, I can see why this hotel must appear in a lot of corporate travel booking facilities and as well as that, it’s a good option for travellers and families who want a clean, fuss free and affordable hotel in the city centre. The free breakfast provides a great bonus too.

I stayed here for two nights for work.

The hotel is well placed for the city and the staff are very friendly and polite. Check in was straight forward with all COVID-19 precautions in place.

A reduced menu is on offer which is eaten in your room or you can bring in / order in your own food.

There isn’t a hotel car park but you can park in the multi storey next door for about £5 a day.

We stayed here as a family of 4 in April (2 adults 2 young children) as a base for watching the Dua Lipa concert. We chose this hotel due the location and positive reviews.
We were allocated room 407 which on first impression seemed excellent…until we realised it was next to the lift shaft which we could here humming whenever it was used. My girls are light sleepers so this room was no use so I politely asked to be changed to a quieter room. The next room we were allocated (212) was facing onto the main road so was actually more noisy than the first and unlike the first room, this room had a rancid chemical smell (possibly fabreeze?). I couldn’t be bothered to change for a second time and despite being on the brink of checking out the hotel and just driving home after the concert, we decided to stay. The hotel needs to apply a bit more common sense when allocating family rooms with young kids. Why not put them all on the higher floors facing the quieter court yard? Thankfully as the kids were that shattered after Dua Lipa we did manage to sleep ok when the traffic quietened at around 1am.
The next morning only cold water was coming from the shower so none of us were able to have a shower.
On a positive the location of the hotel is ideal for anyone visiting the Utility arena (5-10 min walk) and the breakfast was quite decent. The staff seemed friendly.
Maybe we were just unlucky with the rooms allocated however it has put us off returning if we were wanting a family room.

The hotel is surrounded by plastic sheeted scaffolding from street level to the top of the fifth floor. There are no signs indicating where the entrance might be so the unwary can walk around the whole block to find it. Comfortable rooms but Weekend noise in downtown Newcastle went on until 5am with drunk students shouting and yelling all night! I was in a room on the top floor but noise could be heard even there. Rooms a bit cold and thermostat difficult to adjust. Decent breakfast. Nice staff.

Hello LONGJOHNSILVERSS, Thanks for the stay and for taking the time to share your experience. I am happy that you found the rooms comfortable, but you had to endure noise challenges. I also apologize that you had a hard time looking for the entrance. This is not the kind of experience we want our guests to have. I have forwarded your feedback to our hotel management to work on these points raised in your review to give you the best hotel experience in the future. Once again, thank you for staying with us and hope you visit us again. Best Regards, John O Case Manager IHGService

Location was good for me, just a short stroll from the main railway station, on the edge of the city centre which meant it was a quiet place to stay however all the attractions and facilities were within a very short walk.

The service I received was nothing short of awesome; friendly, efficient and professional. Felt very welcome and nothing would be too much trouble to make my stay memorable for all the right reasons.

Staying during lockdown meant a lack of a few hotel amenities but this was not an issue and was expected.

The room was very good, well decorated and extremely clean.
The bed was very comfortable with good pillows and duvet encased in high quality crisp linen. Nice black out curtains.
There was a well lit work area, Wi-Fi network was very good, yet the TV was a bit of a letdown.

The bathroom was okay, water pressure was good and towels fluffy.

Covid 19 meant breakfast was grab and go, excellent good ingredients well cooked; all good except for the terrible coffee.

Overall excellent stay and I would highly recommend that you stay at this hotel.

We stayed here for one night 28th-29th feb, (stayed a couple of times before and was fab) turned up to an absolute messy building site. The hotel was covered in scaffolding, dirt and net/sheeting. No notice of this when booking or on the website. (Surely they should tell you this or warn you of the noise) Saturday morning after breakfast we went back to our room to relax before going to get our train home and the drilling had already started, right outside our window (5th floor) it was so noisy we had to go and check out! Couldn’t sit listening to that. Totally understand that buildings need to have maintenance done but why not pre warn customers when booking as we would have chose to go elsewhere or even come another weekend? Or even why not put us in a room on the other side of the hotel away from the building works? We were told the hotel “wasn’t that busy” this weekend by hotel staff. Room was lovely and clean though as usual, staff were lovely and breakfast was very nice, just wish we had been informed of the building works before hand! Pleased we weren’t staying for more than one night this time as couldn’t have stood the constant drilling noise, it was awful! I think the booking page/hotel staff should warn the customers about the imminent noise disruption at time of booking/checking in?

Room ok for the money but no hot water so could not shower, really noisy and breakfast staff complaining they had to work and the food was awful with some quite unsavoury and unhygienic people, equipment and cutlery. Get what you pay for and I would not recommend. Notified staff - never mentioned a problem with water till we left and each member of the team contradicted themselves. No doubt all 5 floors are flooded now so you wouldn’t be able to book

When I got such a good deal for this hotel on booking.com I have to admit we weren’t expecting such a fantastic stay. The hotel is about a 4 minute walk down the road from central station which is great and really convenient. Our rooms were really clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. For us the room was a bit hot, but reception sorted a fan out for us straight away, so this wasn’t an issue, the air con didn’t let us put it down lower than 22. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful and honestly couldn’t do enough for us, I want to thank Derek on reception especially who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and had a laugh with us which is just so nice in these depressing times! I didn’t even know breakfast was included so this really was an unexpected treat, breakfast was lovely! A really good choice of breakfast sandwiches (bacon, sausage), cereals, toast, fruit, croissants, and other bits and pieces. You can eat in the downstairs restaurant or bring the food back up to your room which we did as we didn’t want to be near people unless necessary. In terms of Covid:19 the hotel ensure you wear a mask when moving around and lots of hand sanitiser points so can’t fault their precautions in place. Overall a fantastic price, location, facilities and service. Will definitely recommend and use myself again! :)

Really pleasant staff at this Hotel. The buffet breakfast is off because of the Covid-19 restrictions and to be honest I expected a bit more. Bacon rolls provided but very dry and the bacon had obviously been cooked a while before. Our room was next to a busy road junction so was really noisy. Lot of dust (been there a while) between the window and secondary glazing. Thought that was a bit off - obviously no deep cleaning done in that room! Fine for a short stay. The best of this Hotel is most definitely the front of house staff.

Rest assured your comments will be passed to our Housekeeping department for rectification before we rent out the room again. I am sorry you were expecting more from our breakfast. This is an area that is always under review so hopefully you will see more items being added within the coming months. Stayed at Holiday Inn Express Newcastle City Centre for one night to visit the Uni.
Not stayed in one of these before so didn’t know what to expect. It was cheaper than the Premier Inn and I didn’t have great expectations for a city centre hotel on a Friday night in a party city but how wrong I was.
Room was nice, very clean, lovely soft sheets and comfy bed, had everything we needed. It was pretty quiet too, not as noisy as I’d expected in the centre of the city. Complimentary breakfast was good, nothing fancy but lots of choice, nice and fresh and options if you were in a hurry, such as take away coffee cups and paper bags to put anything you wanted to make and take with you.
Staff were what made it though. I’d forgotten to ask for the sofa bed to be made up but at check in Michael (I think that was his name?) was really helpful and sorted this for us, and at check out Derek was great, recommending where we should go and storing our bags so we didn’t have to carry them around all day.
I’ll definitely return here when we come to Newcastle again and would recommend this hotel without a doubt.

The hotel did have a few disabled parking spaces directly outside of the front entrance. The Grainger car park is directly next to the hotel but most spaces are tight for space in there. Parkopedia claims there are disabled spaces in the car park for free.
