This Georgian ivy clad 4 star boutique hotel and restaurant in Suffolk surprises with a twist of urban chic. Our Suffolk hotel is right in the heart of Bury St Edmunds town centre and everything is just a step from here. Explore winding, cobbled, shop filled streets and a plethora of ancient architecture on the doorstep. Once inside, The Angel Hotel is a curious contrast of comfy contemporary design with touches of exotic grandeur. Warm leather sofas vie for your company in the lounge, which is filled with curiosities, pop art, eccentric oddities and cool vintage furniture. It is a hotel of many different aspects all artfully blended together into an exciting package and the bedrooms are no exception. The Angel Eaterie has a great reputation and dining here is a culinary treat.

The Angel Hotel garners mixed reviews with its prime location often celebrated by guests for being ideal for sightseeing. Despite praise for the attentive service and some stylish decor, opinions diverge regarding the hotel's value, with numerous travelers expressing that the room rates do not reflect the outdated conditions they encountered.
Amenities generally meet expectations, yet the atmosphere is occasionally seen as tired, and issues with cleanliness, including mold, are called out. Guests appreciate the convenient parking and the quality of food, although room experiences vary significantly.

Detailed Reviews
A big thank you to everyone at The Angel for a lovely one night stay last weekend.
The porter has a big personality and was more than happy to assist us in parking our rather large car in a very organised but small car park. He seemed to be taking care of several guests all at the same time and at great speed. A great character and an asset to the hotel.
All the staff were empiccably dressed and so professional and could put quite a few top London hotel staff to shame.
Hotel decor is top marks too, we stayed in the newly refurbished rooms which was very tastefully decorated.
Look forward to visiting again for sure!

While I acknowledge some disappointing reviews for this hotel, our 1-night stay was flawless for us. We were anxious about the lack of parking but the helpful porter spotted us and looked after this. We booked the room deal via 'Secret Escapes' so were happy with the price we paid for an ‘Original’ room in the courtyard (£109) – though we were alarmed to note the normal advertised price. The room was modest in appearance, had a low ceiling and was adjacent to a potentially noisy entrance, but once we settled in we found it comfortable, clean and well designed for hotel guests. There were many features that we do not get in some expensive hotels we stay in – an impressively large long mirror, adequate shelf space in the bathroom, particularly soft towels, plenty of table space in the room, shower plus bath, good lighting including reading lights, comfortable bed, proper soap, a comfy chair as well as a desk chair, a decent-sized TV which was well positioned in front of the bed, USB wall sockets, door hooks, good wi fi reception etc. This venue was buzzing (on a Monday night) with customers just celebrating life. The evening meal was amazing, and breakfast was really good. The staff were friendly and attentive. A special thank you to Rick the wonderful porter who is very helpful and a great asset to the hotel.

An elegant hotel in the centre of this historic city offers an ideal blend of modern comfort with history and tradition.
The Angel is a magnificent, old, ivy-clad building tastefully refurbished throughout inside. It's like stepping back in time without losing the creature comforts of the 21st century.
The restaurant is a sheer joy, whether you're wining and dining in the evening from its extensive and creative menu, or enjoying a hearty breakfast before a day's work or sightseeing.
The staff were friendly and efficient in the restaurant, cocktail bar and reception desk. Nothing was too much trouble.
Our bed was huge and afforded us a wonderful night's sleep - and the bathroom gave us a choice of rain shower or deep bathtub. The views across to the Cathedral and Abbey Gardens were spectacular too.
Car parking is at the rear, but we had trouble finding a space on the days we stayed so get in quickly. It fills late afternoon and eases off after check out time at 11am. There's a pay and display car park at the front which is free after 6pm until 8am.
I couldn't recommend this hotel more. It's slap bang in the centre of town, a short walk from anywhere you're likely to visit and a short drive from some of the other day's out which Suffolk has to offer.

Bailed via secret escapes and check in was 5 pm. There is a large car park in fro t of the hotel however it is short stay 2 hrs max and no return for 4 hours. There is small car park behind the hotel but it is near impossible to get a space for a large hotel the parking is ridiculous. We spent early mornings trying find on street parking whilst we had breakfast and when we returned each evening following a day out, there was no parking around the area.
The room we had was dark with poor lighting and overlooked the courtyard of the hotel. The mattress was well worn. The edges had collapsed and there was a dip in the middle making sleep uncomfortable. Unfortunately the bathroom had my pet hate of a shower curtain instead of a washable screen. We asked for the possibility of a room change and were told there was nothing available.
Temple spa toiletries were nice and we were startled to find that the rooms would not be cleaned by housekeeping during each stay. We have been in hotels since lockdown and this is the first time we have come across this. I paid £477 for 3 nights and to have to make your own bed clean your room and phone reception for tea coffee supplies clean towels toiletries daily and have them left outside your room is not 4* hospitality that we are used to. especially as reception rarely picked up the phone. We tried to book evening meal but they had no vacancies in the restaurant. Reception encourages breakfast to be taken in your room but we opted to go to the dining area and struggled to get a time slot for the 3 days. The breakfast was lovely well presented and served with offers of more toast hot drinks etc.
I would not give this hotel 4* and it’s definitely let down by not having some long stay places in the front car park.

Dear Vegasgal11, Thank you for your review. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to change a number of our procedures. This includes car parking and cleaning of rooms during guests stays. We used to offer concierge car parking, however, we are no longer able to offer this as our porter team can not get into guest cars. Housekeeping are unable to enter guest bedrooms during their stay to minimise the risk of transmission. This is all explained in the room information as well as on the COVID page on our website. The tables in the restaurant have also been socially distanced to ensure everyone is safe and as such this means that we have less of them available. We do advise booking in advance to ensure you get a table. Likewise breakfast times are busy which is why we encourage guests to order this as room service. Kind regards, The Angel Hotel

Deceide to have a short break of 1 night for my birthday celebration if all reviews And statements showed good Covid 19 proceedings were in place. The Angel Hotel, did this. We found the hotel on secret escapes and booked up , For a good size double room, in the 2nd band of castings. Room 109 was at the back of the hotel, very roomy fairly basic but comfortable. Lovely bed, stated it was a double but we were sure. But lovely, would have liked an extra pillow. But didn’t ask. Nice clean room and bathroom that was up 3 steps, loved the golds coloured floor tiles. Good working shower, small amount of noise about 12.30 ish by people living opposite the hotel, coming home drunk. But apart from that all ok. Very warm room, with restrictions on opening the window. But understand that. Found staff and hotel had reduced contact with visitors and amount of tables throughout the hotel, and all worn masks and gloves. Worked really well and safely, did make us laugh at breakfast this morning when all the food turned up at once, but we must expect it doesn’t all run perfectly during these times, and it was fine. Wonderful breakfast Very tasty and well presented. So Thankyou to all the staff whom work there. A very nice stay for my birthday.

Secret Escapes tempted us to our first post lockdown trip away. I must have called five times to check this, that and the other as the more I read of various hospitality precautions in general, the more it seemed all the luxury was being restricted and almost cancelled at the last minute but.....
Were we glad we went? Yes. Couldn’t have had a better time.
The check in was positive and welcoming, early room availability always a bonus thank you Chris. Our room as we selected, was light and airy, spotlessly clean, so comfy and well stocked. I’d be fibbing to say we didn’t miss the housekeeping and turn down services but fresh supplies were on hand and the staff all too willing to help if requested.
We would have used the dining room but as the bedroom and it’s view over the Abbey was so lovely we had breakfasts and afternoon tea up there. All came on time, on loaded trays with everything fresh and generally well covered. Staff as we did, wore their masks which we appreciated. Our one dinner in the dining room had some hitches (not sure what was going on with the chef but not his/her proudest moment) but the front of house ladies did all they could to make amends and the other diners seemed to be getting along well and we enjoyed the ambience in there and the lounge areas.
We were pleased too to see Bury itself has retained its buzz and charm so we had lots to do and enjoy getting out and about. Whilst adapting to the changes and precautions needed in and around the sights, shops and cafes the hospitality locally was positive and welcoming.
Check out by e mail and ‘phone again was efficient, polite and unhurried.
So, there were still the luxuries we hoped for, the whole stay was reassuringly clean and upbeat. All the staff we met seemed happy and helpful. We had the best time, felt cheered, up lifted and relaxed thank you The Angel. Susie&Els.

This recently refurbished hotel excelled itself from start to finish with easy check in and delicious homemade scones for tea. The dinner was of a very high standard. I had a delicious chicken dish. All the food was freshly cooked and served efficiently. Breakfast was superb with locally sourced apple juice on offer. The service in the hotel was second to none. I would strongly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is wonderfully central to the town with walking access to attractions. The outside of the hotel and it's common areas exudes class, character and charm.
The disappoint was the rooms small and average at best. Parking is a challenge and Covid precautions over the top. No valet parking, No room service, no cleaning of rooms on a multi night stay.
We paid over £250 a night for the rooms which frankly was poor value.
If you do stay book into the main hotel. If you stay multiple nights book each night separately to force a room service if that might be a problem and frankly no suggestion on parking other than feed meters, their car park was always full!
One highlight was the porter on multiple occasions he bailed me out on parking and room service that did not happen. You sir are a gem and the hotel better recognise you as I was so near to walking out. You saved our day by your service and attitude.

Dear Grandad_Sticky. Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you feel our COVID restrictions are over the top, however, the safety of our staff and guests is very important to us, especially in times like these. The room rates have been reduced to reflect the 5pm check-in which is to ensure the Housekeeping team have more than enough time to ensure your room to cleaned to the new higher standards, again to keep everyone safe. They are also unable to enter guests bedrooms during their stay for safety precautions. Additional supplies are available via reception and room service is operating, we will just deliver the food to your door, rather than bringing this into the room for you. Kind regards, The Angel Hotel

A 3 nights stay as part of our Golden Wedding Celebrations. From the moment we arrived we felt reassured by the Covid19 safeguards that were in place. The Reception staff were efficient and welcoming and already knew about our Anniversary! Check in was quick and problem free and we were able to park for free at the rear of the building. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and had a super view of the Tower Entrance to the Abbey Gardens opposite. A bottle of Fizz was waiting in our room in a fresh bucket of ice and we felt most welcome and grateful for a cool drink after a long car journey. We had a drink in the Bar and were very well looked after by Ruth, who was charming and we could see her smiley eyes above the mask that she wore to protect us (as did all the staff at all times) On the evening of our Anniversary we were greeted in The Eatery by Jasmine, who was delightful, she knew about our Anniversary too! The meal was lovely, the service was efficient and freindly and even the chef sent us a complimentary dessert to share, Complete with "Congratulations" written on the plate in chocolate sauce!!!
Every single member of staff that we met was smartly dressed, polite and welcoming and this really added to our first visit to Bury St Edmunds. We loved the Town, lots of independant shops and things of interest and so much history! I will be honest and say that our room did have a few signs that it will soon need an update, but we were perfectly comfortable.

I like this hotel and have stayed here on a number of occasions in the past. I am not sure about the redecoration inside which is a bit postmodernism in its jumble of new, shabby chic and old world. Not sure that it works. The hotel itself is great but the rooms, especially if you get one of the cheaper deals, can be a bit small and cramped, not to mention up a lot of stairs. Breakfast is very good, but somewhat overpriced for the area as there is a lot of very good alternatives available within a short walk at half the price. Still worth a visit.
