Despite current Covid restrictions our stay at the Principle was second to none, with the bedroom being that of a high quality and the service from the staff being exceptional. The bedroom was clean, grand, and spacious. Outside seating was available with the staff members being attentive and helpful with recommendations of things to do in York. We will defiantly be making a return once restrictions ease. Breakfast was ok, pre packaged, made the most out of what they could provide in this current situation. We will be back to experience the full works soon!

We came for our anniversary, having had our reception here a year before which was brilliant. Our return though wasn’t quite as good. I can understand that COVID has an affect on things, but checkin was slow all over the place. Between the masks and the screens, we couldn’t hear what she was saying at all. There was no acknowledgement of our elite IHG status or the fact that it was our anniversary despite emailing ahead about this. The rooms itself was nice though - the only exception being that there weren’t any flannels and you can hear train announcements very clearly even with all the windows shut. This didn’t bother us too much, but be aware that you will hear these late at night and early in the morning. This aside, the hotel is still beautiful and hasn’t tarnished our fond memories.

My Partner and I decided to splash out and instead of going to Hilton or Marriott we would try something different for our 3 year anniversary. It was just a short weekend trip, we drove from Scotland and arrived late in the evening. Excited to go to our hotel bed, we checked in to the first room which was pretty much at the end of the hotel and underground. The pillows looked like they were slept on, walls were tearing off...the only thing that was clean was the bathroom. After spending a lot of money, even though at 11pm we thought we should check if there is another room available because this was not value for our money. We asked the reception and after tip tapping away at his computer for 10 minutes he found a room. We thought this is it, went up to the room and the guy had checked us into a room that was already taken. I walked into an old guy naked sleeping on the bed, shocked as ever I ran down to the hotel reception again to explain the situation. Trying not to kick up a fuss, he didn’t even apologise to us. He quietly again tip tapped away to find another room. He said he would discount our room, but it was paid for in full already. And we never received a full apology or anything to compensate for what we had experienced. The room we finally got was nice and big. What we were hoping for when we arrived...But I would never return, the customer service was horrible but it may just be that one night Porter.

Sadly had to leave very early due to Covid closure but the quality of staff and the fabulous public spaces were so impressive that would return at the drop of a mask. Special and honorary mention to Paul whose friendliness, enthusiasm and knowledge was a delight and the lovely Sarah Jane for her dedication to duty and kind and accommodating nature. Both gave wonderful care and their attention was one of the highlights. Rich

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel. York went into Tier 4 the next day and the hotel swiftly made alterations such as a grab and go breakfast to ensure that the experience wasn't hindered. It seemed very organised with the sudden changes and gave us a great experience!
