We stayed in June, the hotels was very good in all aspects, we had a ground floor room which was very convenient, the breakfast was lovely and generous, there are extensive mature gardens with a heated swimming pool. It’s roughly a 15 minute walk from the centre of York depending on how fit you are.

Great looking character hotel, but one which looks tired. My wife and I booked a double executive bedroom. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very polite and helpful person, who explained to us that the car park was full up, but there was also a back entrance, off street, where there was room for two or three additional cars. He kindly took our bags in then directed us to this parking area. Access to the hotel was via the grounds. This is where I got a first glance of the outdoor pool, a vile dark green colour (algae) with large areas of mosaic tiles hanging off the inside of the pool! A haven for bacteria! The colour was a blend of not being looked after correctly, sunshine and the pool temperature was far too warm. Then we were taken inside and directed downstairs into a converted cellar (or dungeon depending on how you look at it). The room was damp (to be expected), no natural ventilation (the windows had been sealed) and worst of all, soaking wet carpets! The bathroom area looked tired and the shower cubicle was in desperate need of a refurb and the walls discoloured. On the plus side the bed was extremely comfortable. The bedroom fridge (given that it was 30C outside) was not working. Twice we reported this and it remained unfixed for the duration of our stay. The room (#23) was directly adjacent to the outdoor bar/patio area, so come 5AM you could hear the kitchen staff banging around and with breakfast started at 7.30am do not expect a lie in! Due to where these bedrooms are, the bar is open 24 hours, but the outside area closes at around 11pm, so if you get back from town an fancy a night cap, you'll be taking the drinks back to your room. But if you're thinking of stepping out of the room to get a late drink and you get the elderly Scottish gentleman, you're better off pouring your own drinks as he's as death as a post and does not like to be interrupted from his rest, as I found out, he prefers to work with his feet up! The highlight of our stay was the breakfast, this was superb. The hotel is a ten minutes walk from the main centre of town. It's a nice flat walk, unfortunately you'll have to cross a number of busy junctions and can often be stood waiting at traffic lights for a while and you will also pass lots of run down looking food outlets and grotty looking pubs, not the best part of town. Overall this is a nice hotel, but for what we paid for a damp sodden double executive room it did not represent great value for money and having looked around town there are much better places to stay.

Old-fashioned furniture, decor, fixtures and fittings - but very much in character with the building. But the 1200+ very high ratings is explained in large part by the staff who are cheery, very friendly and helpful, treating everyone as important individuals with courtesy and respect. The highest rating of customer service. Breakfasts are fantastic - very wide choice and the quality is excellent. Not a hotel for those wanting state-of -the-art decor and not best suited to children. But all the guests we spoke to, enthused about the hotel and I highly recommend it without hesitation.

We had a three night stay at the hotel and had phoned to pre-book - and found a good deal pricewise. A large room, with an equally large bathroom (separate shower and bath) and a dressing area with access to a balcony. Even in the middle of Covid, the room was serviced each morning with the bed made and the tea and coffee supplies replenished. The building is old and thus creaking floors (we quite like that!) were not a problem. The (outdoor, hot) swimming pool was rather uninviting, having a rather distinct green tinge! We were told it was being attended to when we were leaving. And due to Covid the sauna, hot tub and steam room were out of action. Breakfast was good, with a wide variety of options. Cooked to order and hot. There is limited parking, but we had a parking space the whole time we were there. Would certainly stay again if in York - and an easy walk into the City and its attractions.

A lovely sweet little hotel. The staff were all excellent, very helpful and friendly. We happened to be there while the football was on and they rearranged the bar so everyone could get in, provided very attentive table service and even provided a DVD player to my daughter who is not a football fan. I would also recommend taking a swimming costume. The pool is sublimely warm and like a little bit of Thailand in the garden. The food was also excellent, I would recommend the afternoon tea as well as the breakfast.
