The DoubleTree by Hilton London Excel enjoys acclaim for its strategic location near transit options and popular venues like the O2, making central London easily accessible for guests. While the rooms are generally celebrated for their cleanliness and comfort, a few guests have noted issues with temperature control and noise.
The hotel's array of amenities, including a generous breakfast and special touches for children, receive positive mentions, though opinions on value show some divergence, with additional costs sometimes a point of contention. Service at the hotel is largely commended for being friendly and attentive, contributing to the welcoming atmosphere.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favorite
As part of his Birthday present, I bought my son some ringside tickets for the WWE Smackdown & Money in the Bank events at the 02 Arena on the evenings of the 30th June & 1st July respectively and was looking for a nearby 4-star hotel with great connectivity to the Arena. As we were driving up from home in Wales, on-site car-parking was also a 'must' for us. After assessing our options I decided to reserve a twin room for 2 nights stay through Booking.com at the Doubletree London Excel.
I emailed ahead to the General Manager, Richard Mackie and asked if it was possible to be allocated a room with a waterside view. I also cited my Hilton Honors number. I was delighted to be emailed back by Richard to say that they would do their best and then again he emailed on the day of our arrival to say that we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a Deluxe Twin Room with Water View.
We easily located the hotel using Satnav and found ample parking space when we arrived around 4pm. Externally, the property presents as a pleasing, modern six-storey building next to Royal Victoria Dock. It is one of several major hotel chains with properties nearby. On entering the smart lobby area, there are several reception desks, with a Restaurant and comfortably furnished Bar to the left and right of the foyer. We were given a friendly welcome, with check-in being efficiently handled (accompanied by Doubletree's signature warm cookies). As I turned to enter my vehicle details in the ipad provided, I was informed that Richard had arranged for our parking to be complimentary for our stay.
We were allocated room 530 and we took one of the two elevators to the 5th floor. We entered our spacious room and were delighted. To the right was a spacious shower room with walk-in shower, vanity washbasin with huge mirrors and shaving mirror and w/c. As this was a Deluxe room, we had been left 2 luxurious cotton bathrobes and matching slippers. There was an array of complimentary toiletries in pump action dispensers, shower caps and a good selection of fluffy white towels of various sizes. Lighting was excellent.
Moving in to the bedroom, we had two very comfortable Queen beds, bedside tables, bedside lamps with integral reading spotlights, easy chair, swivel chair, desk, wardrobe, table lamp, digital safe, iron, ironing board, hairdryer and an extra-large wall-mounted flat-screen TV (with hotel information and Freeview TV channels along with a 'casting' option to view programmes from your personal device).
There was a kettle along with tea-bags, coffee bags, Biscoff biscuits, two bottles of Mineral Water and also a Nespresso machine with a variety of coffee pods. We were provided with two mugs and two tumblers.
We had also been left two beautifully gift-boxed cupcakes and a handwritten Birthday Card for my son. Shortly after we arrived in our room, the Duty Manager called to check that we had settled-in and that everything was to our liking. Lovely personal touches that I would normally expect to find only in 5-star Boutique Hotels.
The attractive view from the large picture windows was directly over the waters of the dock, looking left to the London City Airport; looking right to the 02 Arena and beyond to the soaring buildings of Canary Wharf. The acoustic insulation of the windows was excellent and we enjoyed two great night's sleep.
Both in our room and throughout the hotel, housekeeping was immaculate and all staff pleasant, helpful and genuinely friendly.
If attending an exhibition at the Excel Conference Centre, it is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. The nearby Prince Regent Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station is a 5 minute stroll and offers immediate connectivity to the 02 (a 15 min journey, changing at Canning Town). It is also it is your seamless link to the wider Tube network across Central London. There is also a Cable Car 15 mins stroll away that offers a fun alternative option to take you to direct to the 02.
Between our 02 events, we spent a pleasant day exploring Greenwich, with tickets to the Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory, Planetarium and National Maritime Museum - a 20 minute journey by DLR & Tube.
In summary, a modern hotel, perfectly situated for both venues and events in East London. Top marks to General Manager Richard Mackie and his wonderful staff for making my son's Birthday stay at the Doubletree so memorable.

We stayed here a few years ago and were blown away by the hotel and it's wonderful staff. Ever since it's been super pricey so have found more affordable accommodation however this visit was extremely good value for money and we didn't hesitate in booking.
The beds were exceptionally comfy and together with the air-conditioning and blackout curtains, we all slept very well. The breakfast was first class and the staff were all very attentive. The food in the bar was incredible too which we'd been a little unsure of due to reviews however it was far from "ding meal" standards. Everything was freshly cooked, beautifully presented and so reasonably priced. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the cleanliness was to a very high standard. We asked for an extra hour on top of our checkout time and this was given without a problem.
The area itself is very quiet and for our aviation mad son, the occasional low flying aircraft was a dream. I should add that you don't hear any noise in the rooms. The airport is a very short walk away so this hotel, with its free parking, would be an ideal location for those using it.
We'd like to send all the staff a very big thank for making our mini break so amazing!

The Hotel is located about 5 minutes walk from the DLR Prince Regent station, and a 10 minutes bus ride from London City Airport. The hotel is definitely up to the high standard I have come to expect from Hilton. I was appreciated as a diamond member and received a warm welcome from Courtney at reception. On check in I was given the signature cookie and 2 bottles of water.
As a Diamond Member I received an upgrade to a suite, with the most wonderful views. It was equipped with A/C, 2 TV's, a coffee machine, Kettle for tea & coffee. The bathroom had a really great rain shower and seperate hand shower, with the little touches like bathrobe and slippers, Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries. The Bedroom room was spotlessly clean and the bed exsteemly comfortable, Breakfast is a buffet service with hot and cold food, and a chef on duty to prepare omelettes etc. the coffee is excellent. The wifi in my room was good and more than adequate for emails etc. I was certainly made to feel at home and very much a valued guest. The Hotels location is excellent, and is certainly excellent value for money.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and I wanted to surprise her so I upgraded the room to a balcony type which came with an extra charge of £40 which was understandable and wasn’t a problem. The room we upgraded to had a broken air con system so the room didn’t get warmed up and the room temperature was cold as soon as we arrived. The hotel then got a technician to look at it and he couldn’t even fix it either. We was then provided with a portable heater which took longer to heat the room up. The manager being made aware of this didn’t even come up to apologise for the inconvenience or offer an alternative. We as hotel guests had to go all the way downstairs from the 6th floor to ask the manager what he can do for us as the technician already told us there are no other balcony rooms available. He also told us they have a lot of problems with the ac system in a lot of their rooms. We then had to haggle the manager to provide us with something complementary which he took the extra charge for the room off. They also charge an extra £50 for the balcony key Which was an automated security payment which you get back once you depart. After departure it had been a week and I still didn’t receive back the refund for the extra charges. I then had to phone up customer service, the first advisor I spoke to didn’t even understand the situation or knew about the hotels policy for the balcony key nor could provide me with a solution. Finally I got put through to another advisor, I explained what had happened with not receiving my money back for the extra charges and was told to email them the screen shots of my bank statement of the money they had charged to my card. Only then did they refund me back the £90 meaning if I didn’t call them addressing my issue they were happy to overlook the situation and they weren’t even apologetic about it. I wouldn’t stay here again too much trouble.

We've stayed at a number of hotels around ExCel and this one is simply the best!
Excellent location with plenty of parking and a few minutes walk to the venue.
The staff are all lovely, polite, and attentive, and the views from the rooms are just amazing.
I would consider staying here for a long weekend, as the path along the River Thames is just to the right of the hotel entrance, and there is plenty to see and do in the area, so it's not just a hotel if you are attending an event at Excel.
We had an evening meal in the lounge which had a good choice of food, was reasonably priced, and very tasty and we also really enjoyed the breakfast buffet which was well-presented and very nicely cooked and prepared.
The dining room is adjacent to the river and is lovely and sunny and just a very pleasant place to sit and have a leisurely meal.
The original room we were given did not have a bath tub, so we rang down to reception and spoke to Mohammed , who was very courteous and kind, and changed our room with no fuss whatsoever to a room with a bath tub and also an amazing view of the river!
This made a business trip extra special and really made a good impression on us that a staff member was so helpful and accommodating to our needs.
Thank you Mohammed. We really enjoyed out stay thanks to your excellent customer service!
We will definitely stay here again whenever needing a room in the Docklands area. It's great location, combined with value for money, lovely staff, and good food is a winning combination!

After staying here for 1 night with my wife I was disappointed. Checkin service was not good or i expected - had requested an upgrade if possible when booking but this was not offered or mentioned when i tried to check in. The room was tired. We ordered room service only to find that the one if the sauces in the pots they provided had been opened and half used. Poor considering the health situation at the minute. In future would not stay here but look at the other hotels in the area. I have been booking Hiltons for the past few years in order to build up points but this was very disappointing.

Not Hilton standard, it’s normally my first choice when booking a hotel be it local or on holiday. Not this time. When I say I would be ashamed to have this property as a Hilton branded one, I’m not saying it lightly. Upon entering the hotel the entire place needs refurbishment as it is very old and falling apart, the carpet is literally falling apart with fibres coming out across the hallways. Check in was smooth no hiccups. Got to the rooms and apparently it’s still Covid as no toilet paper. Ok possibly an oversight no issue. Jumped in the showers and proceeded to unroll the rubber mat BIG MISTAKE it was covered in mold. Already by this point I’m annoyed but chalk it up to a bad day. Get into bed and realise it’s abit chilly so go to turn the ac off and even though it showed off it was still on. No matter what I did I could not get it to work. So a very restless night ensued. The following day after the rooms are cleaned no towels or complimentary tea/coffee/water was refreshed. I wish I could I say that was it for the sorry fiasco that is DT by Hilton But no there is more. We ordered from the salt bar for dine in. The sheer audacity to charge £5 for a tray charge and not leave a small dine in table was atrocious. We ate on our bed. Now the food. Fish and chips is an iconic British dish very simple. They charged £14.50 PP so you are expecting quality. The fish was not cod but a very cheap mushy fish. The chips were so undercooked they were nearly raw. Worst of all food was luke warm, which does not make any sense, as it’s not like it had far to travel. Worst £34.00 ever spent on a meal that is so basic. I would never recommend this property. Definitely not Hilton standard. I could have spent half the price and got similar service at Ibis, premier inn etc

We stayed at DoubleTree Hilton for one night after a day at a trade fair at London ExCel.
The overall experience was good. It was a nice little touch to be greeted with a lovely warm cookie at check-in. I checked in a bit early and that was no problem for them.
The room was as expected: A good size, spotlessly clean and well maintained. There was a kettle in the room with tea, coffee and milk. The best part of the room was the bathroom with a full size bath and with the standard toiletries.
We had first a drink at the cosy bar and then dinner at the restaurant. we were pleasantly surprised by the food. It was better than what you often get a hotel restaurants and reasonably priced. The maître d'hôtel was experienced, pleasant and efficient. The young man taking our order and delivering our food clearly was a beginner but corrected any mistakes quickly.
The breakfast was fantastic. There was a lot of choice, the items were replenished instantly and the quality of the all the items we tried was high. The best of all was the waffle, it was among the best we have ever tasted.
The only tiny complaint is that the lady who checked us out promised to send a copy of our bill via e-mail but I never received it. Still, I want to give her the benefit of doubt and say to myself that maybe I did not write down my e-mail address clearly enough and she was not able to read my handwriting. I checked the amount on my credit card statement and it seemed correct.
We would happily return to DoubleTree Hilton. It would be worth it just for the bath and the waffles!

+1
We arrived into London City Airport and we walked to DoubleTree by Hilton ExCel which took just under 15 minutes. As we had already chosen a room online and had a digital key we went straight to the room which was accessible via the lift at the far end of the restaurant.
The room was fairly spacious and comfortable enough however being Diamond status we were probably entitled to an upgrade if I had enquired at check-in but we were tired and happy with what we had chosen. There was everything in the room to provide a confortable stay, there wasn't a great amount of storage space but fine for the short duration of our stay. The bathroom was fairly small with a midsized bathtub and a powerful shower.
We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was nicely presented but took quite a while to arrive. We also had the buffet breakfast in the morning which had a varied choice of hot and cold items.
It was a good stay at Hilton by Doubletree by Hilton. It is close to ExCel Exhibition centre, London City Airport is also close by and walkable. Royal Albert DLR station is short walk from the hotel.

The hotel room was fine , the location is what it is , a bit far from the centre but ok for excel and 02 . But we have to give this place a 2 star due to the levels of service . Our time in London has been great and with the exception of the Hilton everybody has been great ( see other reviews )
We ordered room service at a premium charge and 1/2 the order was missing and what did arrive was cold , we sent it back . We had booked 2 nights which they did know but was locked out of our room the second day . We had to go to reception and re check in .our stuff was still in the room etc , she said oh sometimes our system does this and reset our keys ( very strange ) the bar staff ,2 miserable guys were awful . No smiling just barely finctional . Not just to us but to everybody . We were going to eat and drink there for the evening , but did a trip advisor and went to the custom house bar /restaurant down the road ( part of the ibis styles) they were great we had a good meal and we stopped there till it closed
Our checkout was as you would expect , not good . After waiting for 10 mins plus whilst the receptionist was chatting to a friend , I finally got there attention . I use starling bank so had already been notified of a the charge to my account on arrival and the charge to our room taken at 2.30am on the departure day . I was then told incorrectly that the charge would be adjusted from the initial deposit , therefore taking the balance . I told the guy that both the deposit and charge had already been taken , he assured me several times this was not the case . I showed him my transaction receipt from the bank at 2.30am . To which he said oh well it will sort it’s self out within 5 business days . And was dismissive . There was another couple next to us arguing basically the same point . So expect the charge your card £50 to start , then charge again anything you have spent in the early morning of departure ( before you can check your bill ) . I’m sure the initial charge will drop off eventually but be aware as they are trigger happy with your card . The hotel needs to get its service levels in order . Would we return -no .

I can’t remember specifically, but I remember it being expensive!
Prince Regent DLR station is a 2-3 minute walk away.
Hello,
I’m sure if you have a word with the manager, this should be something they are able to arrange. I have heard in the past of friends who have done something similar to this. Give the restaurant a call from your room or ask down at reception. I hope he has a lovely birthday!
