Famous Lakeland hotel & Inn perfectly located between Ambleside and Grasmere. Huge rooms with 4-poster beds. Woodland and mountain views all around, and a 2 minute walk to the lake. We have a relaxed and informal atmosphere, and take pleasure in serving good home-made food and local real ales

Our 40th wedding anniversary looming and we had intended to visit the USA, of course Covid put a stop to that so decided to come back to a much loved by us hotel in the Lakes. If you like modern and spotless then you won't like the Glen Rothay.......it's not your sort of place. If you like comfy and lived in and traditional decor then you will fit right in. Been here many times and love it. Informed on check in that rooms were not being cleaned each day unless specifically asked to......not a problem....fill in the sheet if you require a top up of anything and leave towels outside the door, never had a problem with any of this. Cannot fault breakfast ask for what you want and you will usually get it. Eating in the hotel at night was a bit different this time. We would normally eat in the traditional oak panelled dining room but because of Covid diners were spread between that room and the breakfast room. Very different but nice atmosphere eating in there. Food seemed much better than normal.....a change of chef......or more thought put into the menu I don't know but husband is still talking about the steak he had....unfortunately it was on the specials board and not available the following night....lol. Would we be back....of course....had a look last night in fact to see what was available when we can travel again.

We made a last minute dash to visit Rydal Water, Ambleside with our namesake Lakeland Terrier puppy, aged 11 months, Rydal. Her colours matched the Autumnal colours so vibrant at this time of year in our favourite National Park. We stayed in the dog-friendly Otter Room, not only warm and cosy but perfect for our planned 3 mile walk around Rydal Water. Wendy, assistant manager, responded to our last minute request with all the welcome we could have wanted. She even acted as an unpaid guide during our night time, darkness stroll through Dora’s Field which is next door to the hotel and maintained by the National Trust [Named by William Wordsworth for his sister and the place to view a host of daffodils in Spring]. Wendy, accompanied by her faithful border collie, led us on into walk aside the churchyard. Staff at the hotel made sure were were suitably imbibed with drink and good food and always with a smile. We just wished we could stay longer. Dinner and breakfast was perfect and our stay ended with lunch and a stroll along Lake Windermere before the drive home. We cannot wait to return! 5*

The hotel enjoys lovely views across Rydal Water. We received a warm welcome from the friendly and helpful staff. We stayed for three nights in a comfortable and spacious room with a modern bathroom. The food was very good, especially the large breakfast! The conscience staff were very Covid-19 aware and social distancing was observed throughout the hotel. We will definitely stay there again.

We had a lovely four day holiday here. The staff were amazing & made our stay very enjoyable despite the restrictions & the extra work it caused them. The food was excellent & we would love to come back & stay here again. Not forgetting the opportunity to watch the badgers feeding each night was very special. Thank you.

The room was huge with a standalone bath and comfortable four poster bed. Good wi-fi. Location is perfect, easy to access many walks straight from the door. The food is fairly standard pub grub and variable depending on who's cooking. Our first day's breakfast was stone cold and the dinner took 40 minutes to arrive, but on the second day everything was good. Staff were friendly and accommodating. My only niggle is the fact that on the sunny days, people from the beer garden were queuing in the Badger Bar to use the toilets without social distancing and not wearing face coverings. There are hardly any signs asking them to do so, and no sanitizer by the main entrance.
