A real shame as we have eaten here several times before and had had good food and service.
Our room was pleasant but a bit on the small side; the bed on the other hand was huge and comfortable. We decided to have supper at the hotel as the weather was too inclement to explore Moreton for an alternative. The hotel advertises two restaurants; a brasserie and the Mulberry Tree. They are given separate write ups but have the same menu and the same prices which are fairly hefty across the board. My Sirloin steak was very nice but at £27.00 did not represent value for money, in my opinion. The starters were nice and my wife’s salmon from the specials list good but not great.
After a decent night’s sleep, despite creaky corridors (it is an old building), we had a very good breakfast before booking out.
We enjoyed our stay to a degree but would probably shop around in the area before deciding on our accommodation next time we head for the Cotswolds.
Would I go there again NO steer well clear especially if not wearing labels
However, we need not of worried as the amazing, loyal and enthusiastic staff team have kept the character and good standards of this lovely hotel going.
The hotel building and grounds are well maintained and attractive. Our hotel room (very good room) was well positioned and delightful. The floor boards are creaky but that is part of its charm. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. The room was not serviced during the stay due to COVID but fresh towels etc can be requested. There was a coffee machine and tea making facilities in the room.
We ate in the Mulberry restaurant on both evenings and despite the menu being the same as all the other hotels/pubs in the chain the food was superbly cooked. The quality of food , presentation and cooking was far superior to the other hotel that we had visited. The service was also of a higher quality and it was evident that the staff enjoy working at this great hotel. The staff were all friendly and keen to talk to the customers. Breakfast and lunch service in the garden (due to the heatwave) was also very good.
We took a 3.5 mile walk across fields to Batford and walked past the falconry centre and the deer enclosure and across fields back to Moreton-in-Marsh. It was a great walk even in 30 degrees.
We also bought some delicious cheese and bread from the town’s super cheese and deli shop.
I wish we could have stayed longer but we are having a series of mini breaks to make up for not going abroad this summer. We will be back though.
We liked the hotel the gardens were beautiful and we enjoyed having a drink on an afternoon and night.
We ate in the restaurant both nights and although it was fairly decent the menu was quite limited and some of the food lacked flavour, it was quite expensive.
We enjoyed breakfast in the conservatory it was tasty and prompt.
We would stay here again but will probably try somewhere else next time.
On arrival, we went straight round to the car park at the rear of the hotel, rather than trying to park at the front and then walked back round.
Check in was easy, we booked breakfast for 9.30 on both days, paid the room and were given a key to room 47 which would be available around 3pm.
The room was small, very clean and comfortable, overlooking the terrace garden and conservatory. Complete peace.
The bathroom was good and the shower more than adequate. Be warned, the doors slam shut on leaving though.
We slept well on both nights.
Breakfast was served in the conservatory and was a choice of cold buffet items, full English or vegetarian breakfast and various egg dishes, with toast, tea and coffee. Very tasty indeed.
The absolute star of the place is the garden, it is BEAUTIFUL. 3 separate lanes, apple trees, a Pagoda, absolutely beautiful. We had snacks and drinks here in the sun. It isn't cheap but it is a lovely setting.
For our evening meals we went to the White Hart Hotel (decent enough but I wouldn't rush to go back) and The Black Bear (stunning, see my separate review
The rooms were tired and dated, room 8 had a shower of sorts in the bath which resulted in you having to stop low to get under it plus it had no shower gel. Room 31 was on the 2and floor accessed by stairs or a lift. It was facing the main road and was noisy with passing traffic.
It had a proper shower and loads of Molten Brown gel and soaps.
The pillows were very soft so no good if you like firm pillows.
The bar and restaurant are nice and friendly with a good range of beers, wines and other drinks.
We had pre booked for evening dinner. We were put in the conservatory not the main restaurant.
Good options on the menu, everyone enjoyed their meal, all well presented and tasty.
They have a silly face covering rule in reception but the staff don't wear one in the same area. Something to do with them bring behind the desk, but so were we just the other side??
Breakfast was nice, a waiter with his own style and sense of humour!
All in all a nice but expensive stay.
The Room generally was large and nicely equipped however one of the small tables seemed dusty, and the on suite is small.
The restaurant is nice but a couple of chairs did seem close however were back to back so probably met covid rules but most guests appeared elderly and some did seem concerned,
The food in the main was very nice but one of our stakes contained gristle and given the price that is not good enough, to be fair to the hotel they did offer a replacement but that meant one of the party would be eating after the other so the offer was declined.
Overall whilst the hotel is nice it did not live up to its 4 star rating.
