#3 of 8 in Looe
Travelers' Choice
The Portbyhan Hotel is situated in an unrivalled position right in the heart of Looe, allowing guests to relish the panoramic views of the vibrant harbour with only a short stroll into Looe town. The Edwards family, who operate an award-winning holiday company in South Wales, purchased the hotel in June 2013 and have since invested over £2.1 Million in a full-refurbishment of the exterior, bedrooms, restaurant, bar and public areas. These renovations, the location and the excellent services that the hotel offers have all contributed to the Portbyhan Hotel recently winning “Best Individual Hotel” at the prestigious National Coach Tourism Awards. Our public areas are also open to non-residents therefore if you are passing and wish to meet the team, sample our locally sourced cuisine or simply relax and enjoy a cold beverage on our roof top garden, please feel free, we would love to see you!

Very confined space for a double room and the shower room even worse. I requested a bath but there are only 2 in the whole hotel one in a family room and the other in a luxury suite, There was very little space to put stuff in the shower room (2 tiny glass shelves, one over the toilet). The shower was not fit for purpose, You could not bend down in it without banging your head and it was that tight that the grab rail was put on the wall outside the shower (what use is that?) We asked for a quiet room and had noise on and off all night from either flushing toilets, running water, mechanical noises and something similar to a ship's horn. There was also a light on in the room all night (exit light?). The room was planned so that the dressing table had no light and was in the darkest corner. There was one chair for a double room and no table but there was no room for either, Evening dinner was school meal style with peos as the veg for every meal. I did not expect sausage and mash, cottage pie etc for restaurant hotel food. After 3 days I was offered another room at the back of the hotel next to the kitchen fans which we declined, Our room was also overlooked by several houses where people sat in their gardens and could look straight into our room. Hope they enjoyed the view! The positives were that there was always hot water so when you had to leave the shower door open and sit in the tray with your feet hanging out you did have hot water. The hotel was very clean and in good order. There is no car park. They did deliver on the early moring call.

My friend and I stayed here in April 2016, our first coach holiday with Barnes Travel of Swindon. We had a lovely stay, and I said as much on TripAdvisor then, when I left a review... We decided last October, when the new Barnes brochure was published, that we would come back for a second visit. I am so happy to say that it didn't disappoint after those 6 years! Well done to everyone involved in our stay. The food was just as good as we remembered, and the rooms as clean and nicely decorated (new furnishings, too!) And.... the attitudes of the staff were just right. Like last time, everyone was so cheerful and happy in their work, that I guess they must enjoy being there? We certainly got the feeling that it was a happy workplace, (both times we visited!) which indeed is passed on to the guests! Bar staff were friendly and helpful, and waiting staff, and reception, also. Thank you all for making this another memorable stay in The Portbyhan, and who knows, perhaps in another 6 years' time, we shall return? I certainly would love to! I shall, meanwhile, recommend you to anyone coming to Looe.

Room Tip: If possible, try to get a table by the large windows looking out onto Looe Harbour, and enjoy...

Came for a Sunday carvery, we are locals and had nephew and partner staying with us. The carvery was very tasty (although could have been a little warmer). Staff were extremely friendly and helpful as always. Our only gripe was that our nephew only wanted 2 of the meat choices but we still had to pay for 3 as he was aged under 60!! Why do you have an adult, 3 meat price and a senior citizen, 2 meat price? This seems very unfair (and ageist) Why can’t you just have a 2 meat or a 3 meat option and priced accordingly, available to everyone?

Dear JulieC43, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I have discussed the comment with regards to food temperature with our chef. My apologies for this shortfall. I am afraid that we could not adopt your suggestion. The reduced price for senior citizens is something we have always done, and with a age limit of 60 this is below the retirement age threshold set out. The full price is for anyone under the age of 60 and above the age of 12. The price allows you to pick and choose as you want, regardless of how many of the meat options you opt for, we still give the appropriate amount for the price paid. We do not give less just because you do not go for all three meats. Thank you again for your feedback and suggestion. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Thanks Chris

We had a night out in Looe, a nice drink and a great meal in the Salutation pub with resonable drinks and a great atmosphere with friends, then we came here, very disappointed £12 for a glass of wine in a bar with no atmosphere really! What a ripoff we live locally but won't be back

Dear Linda H, Thank you for your review and feedback. As you are a local, we have a locals discount membership system that is free to sign up for, this entitles you to discounts within the Brasserie and Restaurant. You would be very welcome to sign up to this, all details are available at reception. All of the prices are available on the menu that you would have used to make your selection. This is a lot of money I agree, however, there are other options available on the menu for large (250ML) glasses of wine. It is not very often you see the higher priced wines available by the glass in restaurants, we offer this to our customers as we want you to have the opportunity to experience a premium product without having to buy the whole bottle. All of our wines are handpicked, tasted and then listed by quality first, we do not opt for the cheapest version just to have a wine list. We are passionate about our offering, as hospitality professionals we have knowledge of trending products as well as the best wines to choose from. We always aim to look after the locals, as we value the potential of repeat and regular business. I do hope that you will visit us again. Kind regards, Chris

We visited here for dinner rather than staying in the hotel. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We managed to sit by the window after most of the residents had eaten their dinner. Lovely food and a great service by all involved.
