I had a nice stay at Ukuptupu from December 27th until December 30th, 2011.

Anyone expecting 5-star hotels, pools and buffets should be spending their holiday elsewhere in Panama! The Kuna Yala islands are beautiful, mostly unspoiled, and inhabited by an indigenous population very proud of its culture. Mass tourism hasn't been developed there, there are no big resorts on the islands, it's all very quiet and low-key.

Ukuptupu Cabins are located on the tiniest of islands, just several rooms built on stilts on the water, with a few hammocks here and there. They are very basic and have no locks, so if you're afraid for the safety of your things (which I wasn't, as it felt very safe there), bring your own padlock.
The bathrooms are rustic (a big bucket of water instead of a shower!), but hey, that's part of the charm.
Basic meals are served in a bigger hut, eggs for breakfast and rice and fish, mostly, for dinners. If you're lucky, you can get lobster for dinner!
The owners are a friendly Kuna family, and a pet parrot and well-behaved dog complete the lot.

Every day during my stay I was taken with other guests to a different island to spend a few hours on a beautiful sandy beach, swim and relax.

Depending on the island, there may be water for sale there, or it's also possible to request
the Kuna people staying on the island to sell us fresh coconuts. Delicious and refreshing!

Whatever previous reviewers have written, please don't miss the opportunity to stay at Ukuptupu.

It was somewhat hard to get to and very rustic. The manager/owner was very nice. They brought us on great excursions during the day. If you are looking to buy molahs, a family member of the owner makes some really nice ones. We expected rustic, so we didn't care, but it is unfortunate that they cannot figure out a better system for waste. Everywhere we went toilets were placed on decks that went directly into the water. I would not recommend swimming near inhabited islands. Other than that, the islands are some of the most beautiful we have visited.

I arrived the Hotel with couple of friends - I don't know if one can call this place a Hotel because definately it's not a place to sleep and stay -. We were showed the direction where we would be. The owner didn't care about us just left us at the shore and that's it. There are no room numbers but it wasn't the biggest problem. The doors don't have locks. The bed sheets were wet and couldn't sleep on them. So we put some towels on it. The walls are made of straws which would make the rooms stylish if they didn't have mold. At night we had to keep the lights on because we felt that something was moving around us. Later than we found out that they were cockroaches. Those huge ones. The hotel service comes with island tour. It lasted 30 minutes and when we arrived the island they left us there for 6 hours without water or any type of drinks. Meanwhile We didn't have water to drink so we stayed under the sun with no shadow around and with a terrible thirst. The water was supposed to be included the whole tour, it was on our voucher. They tried to sell it so can make some money out of our suffering (thirst). When we tried to induce the owner J. G. to make some changes. He yelled at us saying that we were the only ones who were complaining and with his own words he said " I don't like this kind of behavour". Well I don't know what kind of tour we paid him for but that seemed like survivor training or something. If you don't want ruin your Panamanian vacations don't go there. It's a nightmare!!!

A small hotel owned and operated by a charming Kuna family. It is very basic, set back on a small private island surrounded by native communities. From the hotel we were able to visit picture perfect tropical islands, with white sand, palm trees, and crystal clear waters.

For what we paid we got the best I think, from the time we arrived to the time we left the staff were very helpfull and booked all our trips with no problem, the rooms are most rustic than the other lodge in san blas islands that we visited by flight. Is a very very rustic place and is very cheap. The walls are made of straws which would make the rooms stylish if they didn't have mold
