Hi
From the time I called from Auckland to book a motel to attend a family bereavement I was super impressed with the thoughtful, respectful customer service. I spoke at that time to Lesley the owner. We duly arrived Wednesday and were greeted with the same excellent customer service at check in .... especially recalling while we were in Nelson and offering condolences. The rooms were very clean and tidy, amenities perfect. A very professionally operated motel.
I say 5 Stars.

Excellent motel in the heart of Richmond, Nelson. I stayed in a tidy studio unit. Close to a main road but extremely sound proofed. Friendly hosts also! Very tidy and clean. First time I have been here. Will stay again!

I've just returned from a work trip to Richmond, where I was put up at the Gladstone Motel. It was an enjoyable stay. Friendly hosts. Clean, warm, tidy, modern facilities. Comfortable bed! Nice shoer! Free (though limited) WiFi. Easy walking distance to the shops, restaurants and cafés, and kids playgrounds.
If I was to suggest one improvement it would only be to make the breakfast a bit fancier (a nice thick grainy bread and a more substantial muesli would've been wonderful).
I also thought it was a shame that the motel was overlooking the neighbours somewhat messy backyard... However, that's not a fault of the motel!
I would definitely recommend Gladstone to friends and family.

Thanks for your comments which are appreciated. Regarding the WiFi; we allow 100Mb free as an introduction. This is normally more than enough for guests to check E-Mail, web browsing, Facebook etc. However if you require more, you only have to ask. The only reason we limit it is to discourage illegal downloads of Movies, Music etc (Large files) for which we as the service provider could be subject for a $15,000.00 fine. Regarding the breakfast; we have surveyed our guests over the years and tried to tailor the continental breakfast to suit the majority. We have settled on a choice of two fruits, three cereals, two good quality toast breads, (Wholegrain and white), Orange juice and an assortment of condiments. Unfortunately it is not practical to stock too many brands of breads and cereals as the volume of consumption is not high and there would be too much waste. Because we are only minutes walk from cafe's and restaurants, most guests choose to eat there. Sorry about the neighbour's back yard. We have tried to drop polite hints that a tidy up wouldn't go amiss but it has fallen on deaf ears. They are very nice people but just don't seem to think that a tidy yard is a priority.

The motel is a budget accommodation, definitely not a 4-star motel as the managers claim and charge for. Shabby furniture, no air conditioning, no ventilation, noisy at night. Do not be fooled by nice pictures, glamorous reviews and high prices.

This customer has written the last 3 reviews just using different names. Unfortunately he booked the wrong type of room he needed. We were full at the time so I could not move them. I called 4 other motels to see if they could accommodate them but they were full as well. He was very rude and threatening to me. As we have many Great reviews I will leave it to other Guests to make up their own mind. Some people you just can not help. No matter how hard you try.

This hotel is listed as pet friendly. Since I travel with my dog, I searched for pet friendly. To avoid any last minute surprises, I always send a message to inform the hotel when I make reservations that I am travelling with my dog.
I showed up at the hotel at 5:00 for check in. They wanted me to write my credit card number on a piece of paper with all my other essential details. I didn't like that. I am told that they already have this information when you book with booking.com or other service anyway so there is no security issue. If they have it, then why do I have to write it? Having it in as many places as possible seems like a security issue. It's no longer behind the password on their computer.
There were three race car drivers that arrived while I was checking in. They took up the entire parking lot so I was unable to unload my car or even get to my room so I went to dinner while I waited. Each driver had towing vehicle, a car, and a trailer. They parked them all separately in the tiny parking lot. Others, presumably workers at the hotel, were parked perpendicular to the parking spaces so that getting out of the spaces was difficult for people in large vehicles.
I finally got settled in and found the note about not frying onions in the room rather funny since there were facilities for frying.
I started to take a bath but there was a sky light directly above the bathtub without a shade on it. In the old days, I'm sure that was secure too but for now, people have drones and are not shy about taking photos they shouldn't and posting them on fb, instagram, and other public sites.
The room was very noisy from the road so I slept with the television on.
At 7:00 am, I got up and took my dog for a two hour walk around the down and down the trail that heads to bright water. Just after 9:00, upon my return, I got a knock on the door. It was the manager. She was shaking with rage. She told me that I had not paid the deposit. I told her that I paid everything that I was asked to pay. She told me that she did not know that I had a dog. I told her that it was on my form. She told me she knew that because she read it. She told me that she didn't know how big the dog was. I told her no one asked. She told me that I had to keep the dog under control. I asked her what that meant. She told me that I had to take the dog out for walks. I said okay. She told me that I had to have it on a leash. I said okay. She told me that I couldn't keep the dog in my room. I asked where she expected me to keep it. She told me that house keeping was going to clean my room every day and that the dog couldn't be there when I wasn't there. I said okay. She told me that I had to leave and I had an hour to get out. I said I'd be gone in ten minutes.
As I was leaving, one of the house keepers started yelling at me that having a dog in a room that size was animal abuse. I would like to see how that could possibly be animal abuse.
They offered to refund my money for the nights that I had already paid for.
I was left with no where to stay on a weekend when most of the hotels were full because of the races.
As a parting shot, the owner added that she could have charged me for two nights.
I did nothing wrong. She didn't follow through with the questions that were important to her and held me to blame and I ended up spending the entire day finding new lodgings.
I have since reported to my employer who used to recommend this hotel to contractors that came in but other contractors have refused to stay there because of the horrible service as well.

We are sorry that your experience at the motel was not as expected. Everyone sees events from their own perspective and are free to respond in their own way. Most guests report a very pleasant stay and experience the environment quite differently from that which you have described. The owner did offer for you to continue to stay at the motel with some concessions from you regarding managing your dog which you chose to turn down. We hope things are going better for you now.

After reading the great comments about Gladstone Motel in Richmond, and how everyone enjoyed their stay and raved about the management, I felt this was the ideal place, so I booked a studio unit on Saturday 30th January for 1 night stay on the 7th February 2016. Nothing was mentioned at the time with regard to the cancellation policy (of course I wasn't going to need to cancel).
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen family circumstances, we had to cancel our holiday in the Nelson area. This was very late Sunday Night 31st January, too late to contact the motel direct.
I phone the motel manager at 7.45am Monday 1st February to cancel. He asked why I was cancelling? Odd thing to ask. He said he was going to be charging for the night unless he could fill the motel. He set up the Visa payment on the same day and it was processed two days later on the 3rd February.
I contacted him asking why this has been processed when the date I was going in was the 7th February. He said if he filled the room then it would be refunded. I pointed out I gave 7 days notice of cancellation. He didn't agree, consequently I have been charged.
I booked Saturday 31st January, cancelled Monday 1 February before 8am, charged Wednesday 3rd February, not due to go in until the following Sunday 7th February. I feel I gave 7 days notice considering I contacted before 8am Monday and one cannot get into a motel before midday on the check in day.
I know they are running a business but there has to be some give and take surely!!!

Hi Jude, Our cancellation policy is clearly spelt out in your reservation confirmation, on our website and on our partner websites. We went to extraordinary lengths to assist you even dropping our room rate to try and let the room you cancelled. We were unable to do this and therefore your room charge was not refunded. The industry standard is 7 days or more notice and in some cases no cancellation. During our phone conversation you conveyed that you understood our policy and were thankful for the effort we were making to assist you...now you seem to want to smear our efforts and business unfairly and unjustifiably. Please ensure you check all cancellation policies in the future so that other accommodation providers do not have this issue.

Hotel is next to busy road and only has sliding glass doors with no windows and no air conditioning.
Result is hot rooms and no windows to open.
Avoid staying here.
We were given ear plugs but still very noisy.

We called and reserved one room for 2 single ladies for January 27th. We called to let them know we would be a late check in, around 8.30pm. Someone called us back to tell us that the desk would be unattended and which number our unit was and that it was upstairs unit! We had told them we would had dogs with us (which would remain in our car) but needed to be close by them. After getting upset and being told that we would be charged anyway even though the room was NOT suitable. However we could have a room downstairs but would have to pay an extra $100.00, bringing the total to $248.00! We called them back and told them we are both getting on in years and one of us had a recent ankle operation and the other lady had a bad knee, the stairs were not an option. We eventually did get the downstairs room (not with 2 single beds however!) minus the extra $100.00. Who needs treatment like that and be potentially ripped off for a $100.00

This wpuld honestly have to be the cleanest motel I have EVER stayed in. There were roadworks going on and the host knocked on my door to advise me that they were happening overnight and gave me some ear plugs. Within walking distance of the Richmond Mall and shops. Great service. Will definitely stay again next time I am in Nelson.

Stayed here with a couple of friends while in town for a friend's wedding. Location was perfect for us, midway between the airport and venue. There was a slight mix up with one of the rooms on check in but was settled to our mutual satisfaction. Rooms are a decent size, impeccably clean and well equipped. The bed was very comfortable.
The motel is on a main road and there is a little traffic noise but nothing too disruptive.
All in all, a great place for our brief stay.
