The Phoenicia is a luxury hotel with a human face.
We were on a package with a well-known budget airline's holiday arm, but I could detect no difference in the way we were treated by the staff and the wealthy international travellers with whom we were sharing the hotel.
The room, although smaller than some others we have been used to, was beautifully appointed, clean and well maintained by the housekeeping staff who accommodated our personal routine when it came to servicing the room. Particularly important was the air conditioning, as the temperature lingered in the mid-thirties centigrade throughout our stay.
Because of the heat we didn't go out and about as much as we had planned, making the quality and availability of the hotel's own facilities. We went to the fitness centre and spa every morning and the booking procedure made sure that the facilities were never overcrowded. The fitness equipment was state of the art and there was no difficulty in finding a vacant machine. Similarly, the indoor pool, sauna and steam rooms rooms never had more than a couple of people in them at any one time.
We also spent more time at the outside pool, which had more than enough sun loungers, chairs, etc. for all potential users. The catering was also excellent and we ate there three or 4 times during the week.
We also ate at the Beefbar and in our room during the stay and both experiences were excellent in their own ways. The meat in the restaurant was beautifully and imaginatively prepared, whilst the night-time room service menu, although limited, was tasty and rapidly delivered.
Being situated within a couple of hundred metres of the entrance into Valetta, it is a fantastically convenient location for a visit to a fascinating city and, given the opportunity, we would return in cooler times.

An excellent 5 star hotel situated in Valetta , Malta . This hotels offers quality and high standards in every aspect of the hotels facilities and functions. We were particularly impressed with the attention to detail and high quality guest service right through from reception/ concierge to dining , housekeeping , outside pool and associated facilities. Management are very visible and supported to the day to day running of the hotel and actively support all staff and guests in a friendly and very effective manner. The contessa restaurant offers a range of very nice dishes for all tastes and is supported by an excellent staff team who facilitate breakfast dining and evening meals . Breakfast offers a wide and varied choice with everything to suit all tastes. The staff are so attentive and friendly in the contessa as well as offering a wonderful service to guests. Our room was very comfortable and elegantly furnished with excellent housekeeping services that really did us proud in cleanliness and high standards. Often underestimated in reviews the housekeeping staff should be proud of their excellent work and it was well received by ourselves. There are so many facilities that is find it hard to mention but worthy of note is the beautiful hotel gardens and bastion pool / bar and restaurant area. Immaculate and well managed it caters perfectly for a relaxing and enjoyable time spent there, staff are attentive and nothing is a bother to them , excellent service. Overall, the hotel was perfect for our stay and we felt relaxed and well looked after in all the services and places we used . If you want quality and great customer service this is the place for you in Malta . Highly recommended .

I jumped at the opportunity to stay at this iconic classic 1940's hotel and it exceeded my expectations. The impressive entrance leads to the foyer with its views into the elegant circular lounge with walls adorned with the work of local artists. There was a professional, friendly welcome at reception and as we arrived early, we were offered a complimentary pot of tea in the lounge while we waited for our room to be ready.
We had a room with balcony overlooking the harbour and although not large, the room offered all we needed, was clean, bright and well maintained with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was well equipped with a shower over the bath and there were complimentary Acqua Di Parma toiletries. We ate breakfast in the ground floor Contessa restaurant conservatory overlooking the landscaped gardens and the good selection of hot and cold items available were fresh and tasty.
The peaceful Mediterranean gardens are a joy to walk through and lead to the Bastion outdoor swimming pool and terrace. The weather during our stay in November was changeable and the opportunity to take full advantage of this area was limited. I look forward to staying again at this beautiful hotel which is an oasis bordering the ancient capital of Valletta.

I was made to feel extremely special during my 5 day birthday celebratory stay at the Phoenicia. Every member of staff, from housekeeping to the therapists in the spa, were so professional and friendly. I loved the peace and beauty of the gardens combined with the very central location for visiting tourist sites and tours.

The Phoenicia, Valetta. Picked this hotel as it has a good reputation (TA reviews) and is very close to the main gate of Valetta and we were not disappointed. It is a very well run 5* hotel with 2 restaurants, both of which we used. Of the two, the hotel main Contessa restaurant was best in my view. Extensive breakfast selection of Continental breakfast items or hot buffet and also a “cooked to order” menu. Dinner in the Contessa conservatory overlooking the harbour makes a nice end to the day. The evening menu was very good and all dishes were well prepared. For variety there are many restaurants within easy reach (by foot or Uber) and the concierge is very helpful with suggestions.
Many rooms have a wonderful view over the Marsamxett Harbour and a small balcony with chairs and table. As the original hotel dates from the 1930’s the rooms are slightly smaller than some modern hotels, but well appointed, modern and very clean. Rooms contain a free soft drinks minibar which is replenished daily (v nice touch) and there was an arrival bottle of Champagne/Cava in the room. The hotel is also well situated for Taxi’s and the main bus terminus is close nearby (and no noise from these), if you want to travel around the island. We just used Uber/Bolt to get around the Island (v easy).
The staff here are very friendly and notably well trained, they always greet you as they pass.
There is a lovely pool area with sunbeds, bar and a small daytime restaurant, a short walk through the well kept gardens, which again overlooks the harbour. The pool staff are very attentive, supplying drinks, towels and moving things as needed, again very well managed. One evening a week there is a BBQ by the pool, which is worth doing (book early).
Only improvement I can think of would be if there was some way of heating the pool a little (solar panel?), which despite the sun beating down most people found freezing.
Overall I would recommend it.

Historical hotel recently renovated combines charm and comfort with useful practical situation for visiting both La Valletta and the whole island. The hotel it si located a few steps from the city gate and also from the bus stops which allow visiting the whole island and about 15 minutes from the airport which can be easily reached by bus (bus stop a few steps from the hotel) or by taxi at a sensible price. At the same time the ample gardens, the pool, the magnificent views over the city bastions, the city gate and the Marsamxett harbour, the spa and the ample hotel spaces make the hotel a place where you appreciate also stay and rest. its location allows visiting the city center of la Valletta and coming back any moment if weather changes, you are tired or you just want breaking visits with a moment of rest. We stayed four nights during Easter period. We found excellent the breakfast as well the services, very comfortable the room (ask for a room with balcony and view over the bastions).

Our stay at the hotel started and finished on a fantastic note . Here the staff are second to none ! The manager too found out it was my husband’s birthday and he together with the receptionist sang him a happy birthday song ! We were given a complimentary bottle of champagne and cakes . The staff everywhere worked with pride and everyone we met was always ready with a smile and served us with such a friendly yet professional attitude . The food at dinner was fresh , delicate and seasonal . Rose and Walson really took care of us at dinner , Rose too at breakfast . The staff by the pool knew what they were doing and were ever so attentive to everyone who needed their drinks or food . Violeta and Roberta at the spa were very knowledgeable and confident in their jobs too. Cleaners at the indoor pool were constantly making sure that the floor was wiped clean so as not to leave water anywhere where it could be hazardous to slip. Towels, robes etc were always handy, even the lockers were orividdd with wooden hangers. The porters too would always open and close the doors for us . This hotel is beautiful, elegant , timeless but it is the staff who made us really feel welcome here . One last thing : the breakfast is toooo good . Everything so fresh, colourful fruits and veg, any type of egg cooked in front of you . Well done to all at the Phoenicia .

Superb location within a stone’s throw from centre of town, wonderful facilities, great pool and super friendly staff. Room - albeit on the smaller end - was nicely appointed with quality toiletries (while not environmentally friendly, I didn’t mind taking them home with me!). The infinity pool area was stylish and so relaxing, and the gardens immaculately maintained. A fabulous base for exploring Valletta and the island.

Perfect location for our week in Malta. Couldn’t be closer to the old town but the hotel is a welcome oasis where you can escape the bustle with lovely gardens and a quiet pool area. The welcome from Craig on the door was enthusiastic, warm and friendly after our long journey. The hotel is elegant, rooms are quite small but immaculate - we had a balcony view of the harbour as a bonus. Service throughout we found friendly and responsive at all times. Only once was service a bit slow at a very busy breakfast- but generally the staff were a credit to the hotel and very well trained. The attention to small details is excellent with lovely touches such as Prosecco in the room and a surprise birthday cake on my birthday (we didn’t tell them!). Food in the Beef Bar and the Pool Bar was excellent and not that expensive compared to UK 5 star or London prices. The atmosphere is relaxed, discreet and calm, mainly couples and a few kids but it’s not really geared for families. It’s more expensive than other hotels in the area but in my view was worth it for the location and environment. I would definitely go again but skip breakfast - it was great with a huge choice but if you just want a coffee/ snack there are loads of places nearby. If pushed to be really stupidly picky I’d say please more coat hangers in the wardrobe…and as non drinkers an alcohol free minibar would have been good with fresh milk in the room for coffee ..but I’m sure if I’d asked all that would have been sorted. Overall we really enjoyed it. Would go back! Extra bonus was meeting a member of a very famous pop group in the lift! It’s that kind of place!

We were a group of 7 who stayed for a week in May and we all thought this was a fabulous hotel, high end but not stuffy. The rooms were maybe a bit small but had everything we needed including a complimentary mini bar and tea/coffee making facilities. Bathroom was nice with lovely toiletries and a bath with shower over which was great as I’m not keen on the shower only trend in hotels.I would recommend paying the extra for a small balcony as it makes a real difference. The restaurants and bars were also very good and the food was delicious, dinner was very reasonable and the setting in the conservatory was beautiful. The pool staff were exemplary and nothing was too much trouble, the limited selection of food was good and nice tables and chairs to have lunch at before going back to your sun bed. The only slight criticism was the spa, we had to book a 2 hour slot there are only a few beds by the pool and they had towels and gowns on them so we had nowhere to sit and then when we went outside and the occupants of said beds were sitting upstairs vaping which wasn’t particularly pleasant for us to sit next to. The facilities other than that were very good and spotless. This hotel is in an excellent spot, you can walk out to some lovey bars and restaurants and wander the streets of Valletta within minutes. The concierge (Mario, I think) was especially helpful in booking trips and recommending restaurants, all the staff were brilliant and made us feel very welcome. All in all would highly recommend this hotel
