I would actually rate this 3.5 out of 5, so "good" but I think it only fair to explain the why. The resort itself is a little run down but the owner is making efforts to improve the situation. The standout facilities are without a doubt the swimming pool, the hillside accommodation and the staff. There are even better rooms if you want to stay closer to the beach. We found the location a bit remote, which would be fine if you have your own transport but it is problematic if you have to rely on tricycles or the facility's minibus. We found the presence of chained up and locked up creatures a bit bothersome. Hornbills, peacocks, Minah, parakeets, monkey, python and dogs. Some dogs and cats and chickens had free reign but really imprisoned animals in this day and age is disappointing to find. The food was a bit variable, some meals were superb, others a bit mediocre. It was disappointing to find the fruit options a bit limiting (pineapple, mango and melon) where was the papaya the pomelo and bananas? It was disappointing that fresh whole fish or local oysters, prawns etc was off the cards too. The staff are very friendly but they have a limited repertoire of things that they can and cannot do and many of the amenities like poolside bar, a functioning bar at the beach, all were non existent. Staff it seems had to traipse all the way to and from some control area in order to prepare or collect anything. There was a bit too much detritus on the property too, with some buildings in a deteriorating state and quite a lot of compostable stuff piled up in various corners - quite unsightly. The beach and jetty is a bit sub par. Bare metal spikes protrude from portions of the jetty and clutter of gearboxes or engines and boxes and cans are all over the place accompanied with some of the buildings visibly in need of new woodwork. It would be lovely to have a meal out here but that's just not practical. The beach is cluttered with boats and basically unswimmable because of this. The beach is also only semi private, neighboring pearl fishermen persistently tout their wares. Overall we stayed for several nights booking through Agoda and paying around £50 a night for accommodation with its own comfort room and shower which were detached from the sleeping area, we had pretty good sleep with a noisy a/c through the night and only waking at sunrise to the cacophony of the peacocks and the hornbill. Communication up until our arrival was good with most exchanges by email and Facebook messenger. Our steward/butler did his best - ArJan to accommodate our requests, though it seems making up the room was by his own words not part of his brief. Great views from our room, relatively low occupancy, meaning almost exclusive access to the pool and a sedentary time meant we were super chilled. Internet access was tricky, mobile data coverage is poor and though there is WiFi all over, it isn't particularly fast or reliable, accordingly manage your expectations. We've stayed in similar accommodation before and this is ok for the price but perhaps on the higher end for the region. Food could be better but as I said, the owner is working on upgrades all over the place, new steps and railings are in progress and the accommodation will no doubt get more attention as required. We would stay again but would need to see evidence of some improvements that would bring the property back to pre pandemic levels. If you're not too fussy you WILL have a good time.

We got shamelessly cheated by the resort management! We were assured of strong Globe cellular data which is why I agreed to book. Was clear with the staff we needed to work so needed confirmation of the connection. When we reached our room there was no data and the story suddenly changed to the cellular data comes and goes. The manager was the worst! She was pinning the issue to their staff and was cursing and shouting at her to be the one to pay us back. We ended up leaving with no refund at all. We booked 2 nights and they had no shame and kept the payment for the 2nd night too. Very selfish and inconsiderate behavior on Holy Week itself!

I booked a room for 3 nights months ago via Agoda for Aug 1 to 4. I was informed by the resort via Agoda app that guests who are non-Davao region residents need to present a negative RT PCR result (which I am more than happy to comply). So fast forward… 3 days before the trip, I presented our IDs. That’s when the resort’s reservation personnel, Ria, informed me that they will not be accepting guests from outside Davao region since it the LGU policy was revised. Imagine, we flew miles just to be told that you are not allowed to enter Samal? I mean… the policy was implemented weeks ago, and I have been reiterating over and over about the fact that guests are non-Davao residents. Plus, Ria was really unapologetic, unprofessional, and completely incompetent. I was just told that I will just have to cancel my booking. She can’t do anything about it. She kept on saying that she doesn’t have any idea. What’s more frustrating is the reason she provided: 1. They are on skeletal, and staff A didn’t inform staff B that guests are coming from outside Davao 2. The LGU’s policy is confusing After the encounter with Ria, her seemed to be boss called. Her way of talking is better, but still impose that it is not the fault of the resort because of the 2 reasons I mentioned above. I already requested for refund and cancellation to Agoda. I also filed a complaint through them. However, I want everyone to know how the resort poorly handled my case. Do not book Hof Gorei of you don’t want your vacation to be ruined. The emotional and physical stress that the resort is something that cannot be measured, and ultimately cannot be take back.

The round hut is very classy. You will see the whole Davao Gulf iff you peek by the window. The pool's cleanliness is well-maintained. Foods are cooked and presented very well, and very delicious. Kudos to the butlers and the entire staff, who are very attentive and quick to the needs of the guests. We'll definitely visit again soon.

This place is a little off the beaten track but the serenity is worth it. A nice garden like environment leading up to a hill with a spectacular view of Mt. Apo. A spring fed swimming pool. A clean, white sand beach with tables tastefully spaced. Very good food and very good service.

This one cannot be imagined. A fifty-meter stretch of waterfront not rockstrewn and mangrove’d and viola: you have the venue for a resort! Six ‘beachfront’ cabins (at 100 US dollars a night, if your hostess Frau April deigns to offer you a discount), with additional cottages stretching up a hillside where approaching the summit is located the office, only internet access point, and the pool. This place is accessed by boat only, from the Gorei pier, a substantial structure the likes of which gives pause to muse about Hof cash flows. Ok, why would you possibly want to come here? We suspect the name ‘Hof’ is like catnip to every native Deutsch folk passing through Davo: to a man they’re here with their filippina consorts. And your hostess has indeed fitted out the cabins into charming love nests: canopied beds, well-curtained and private, in the rustic functional style. The safe was not open, and we didn’t ask why. We have no criticism of the room itself: what more can you expect at one hundred USD a night on an island in the middle of nowhere? And you soon know where you are when confronted with 43 peso charges per each half-liter of water you consume. There is absolutely nothing on the extensive and ambitious menu that we would think of doing a repeat. Anticipate at barest minimum 1000 pesos couple per feeding, not including drinks. A limited breakfast is included in the room fare. With an employee assigned to each room, management does not miss opportunities to sell food and drink. We wouldn’t be surprised if each ‘butler’ had a quota. An excursions and activity menu is comprised of jetski or island hopping. There is a volleyball court which strangely is not raked, while the grounds in general are well-tended. We saw no evidence of the type of shabbiness noted by other reviewers, other than bird droppings, primarily the result of ducks and geese the presence of which seem to serve no purpose (they’re not on the menu) other than owing to the whims of Frau April, your hostess. A romantic weekend getaway to unwind? A once-in-a-lifetime experience? There did appear to be guests who’d been here before, which we could only imagine indicates a dearth of options an hour’s boat ride from Davao. Special shout out for lovers of cats and dogs that sit at your feet waiting for handouts while you dine: they lose patience, if you are insufficiently attentive, kindly anticipate a scratch or two. All part of the charm of the Hof Gorei.

It's been wonderful both times we have stayed here. The service is excellent, the rooms clean and comfortable. Food delicious, If I was going to be picky, the only thing I would wish for would be a few more available activities to do, Kayaking and Jetski are fun, but It would be nice to have snorkel kit for hire, as the sea water is so clear here. Maybe a pool table or a dart board. Not a big deal as relaxing is also the key thing to do here.

Going to this place will take 1-2 hours from Port of Davao using boat. Once you've arrived, your butler will give you refreshing drinks before you go to your room. It's so nice that you have your own butler, just ring the bell and dang!! Here she/he comes..hahahaha. There's a pool and jacuzzi (you need to take the 300 steps). The foods/drinks are expensive but still good (You have no choice). You can either eat at your room or at the beach. We prefer to eat at the beach which we can see that sunset/sunrise. BTW, we chose Bungalow for our room since we were 3. It includes 1 big and small bed, with Rest Room inside, AC, TV (no signal sometimes), and mini ref with drinks (It's not free). No free water. Chickens, birds, dogs are roaming around and fish pond. There's wifi but not that fast. (My data is faster than the WIFI!). We went there November 2018.

It has an exclusive feel! I didnt expect to go straight to the resort from Sta Ana Wharf. We were greeted with welcome drinks and headed straight to our room after. No more reception areas where you need to fill out forms. Our cabana is right in front of the beach, the one nearest the dock so it felt like we owned the place. Our bungalow was indeed a tiny house of our own. Very comfortable. I found it amazing as well that we eat our meals on our own terrace. The food was EXCELLENT. Everything we ordered was great, especially the grilled tuna. Our personal assistant (sorry, forgot his name) was very helpful without being too intrusive. He can anticipate needs, and is straightforward and timely. We had our toddler with us but it still felt like our honeymoon. The service is one of the best I have experienced. The place is completely serene that you'll forget all your worries. This is one of my most favorite vacations ever. Thank you Hof Gorei! Here are the downside for the sake of transparency. I am NOT complaining about the following things because the lack of these gave us a disconnect from our busy world and let us completely recharge, or didnt affect our experience negatively. I personally never slept so much in one day. Beach - almost non-existent during high tide, but gave us a good swim in the afternoon because in the morning til noon, the water goes as far back as where the boat stays Reception - one bar to none; only good at the dock No free bottled water - our PA offered to purchase large ones for us though No cable TV - only local channels No wifi - use your data connection near the port No restaurants nearby - the meal service, and the food itself, is highly exceptional though but a bit pricey-stick to seafood for better value Pool is too deep - not good for little kids
