A gift to treat myself and my mum to a break and some relaxation, this has only been a nice trip due to the lovely treatment we had at the beginning of the stay and the company. The reception team were very helpful and the spa treatments were fantastic. The lady working in the garden bar this evening was helpful and kind. That’s the end of the compliments. We had to queue for 15 minutes to order our lunch today. The pool is tired and dirty on the floors. There are a few loungers but people hold them with towels and so there is nowhere to enjoy the “spa” facilities. The dinner was appalling. They took 30 minutes getting our drinks. By the time we had finished our starter, we finally got our water and we’re told they had run out of the wine we wanted. The main was bland and then they had run out of the ice cream we wanted. Every single glass and cutlery I have been given so far has been dirty. The loo roll holder and hook is broken in the bathroom. The neighbours are slamming doors constantly. There are dirty fingerprints everywhere. The tea tray is filthy as are the windows. The whole place needs better cleaning, provisioning and service. To be a four star hotel and not put water in each room?! Not a four star experience…. Not expecting much for the breakfast!

Let me say first of all that the hotel is magnificently situated, offers a lot of well organised leisure facilities and the rooms are very pleasant. But the service in the restaurant leaves a great deal to be desired. Our table of six waited almost two hours between our starters and our main course despite continuous and meaningless apologies from ineffectual staff and the restaurant wasn't even busy! In fact the biggest table in there was a party from Q Hotels Management who unsurprisingly were all served promptly despite the fact that they sat down after us. Disgraceful!

It really gets me when people criticize a hotel on the most petty little details- not only is it extremely unfair to judge the whole hotel on one thing, it has a major effect on people looking to book. We have stayed at Dunston hall before and we will stay there again. We recently stayed here overnight for my partners birthday, we stayed in a suite and we had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Firstly, yes the hotel is old- what else do you actually expect- look at the place- this all adds to the character of the place and how lovely it is. Secondly- why are you people moaning about the water temperature? It was absolutely fine- why would you want to swim in hot water? The pool area is well maintained, clean and the water temperature is just what you would expect if your a normal person. The food was great, great variety of food, quick service and reasonable costs. Breakfast was also really good- hot fresh food, great selection. Room was great- clean, spacious and lots of little extras as it was a suite. Overall, a great stay- a rare chance for me and my partner to get away without the children for a night and we will definitely be staying again. Well done to the team, you are doing a great job.

Dear Kirsty, Many thanks for your review. I am grateful for your kind words. Our pool is at a temperature of around 30 degrees which is a standard temperature for most pools. At higher temperatures the chlorine is not as effective and more would have to be used. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your meals in the hotel. The team will be delighted with your comments and I do hope to see you back at the hotel in the near future. Kindest regards David

I was so looking forward to our Afternoon Tea last Monday with my sister in law and my nieces mother-in-law as a special treat. I had come over from Dublin to visit them. Well how do I start !! The waitress ask us did we want Tea or Coffee that was it , no choices of tea or coffee offered , when we got the drinks I thought I had received tea instead of coffee as it looked so weak, we then went to the jug for the milk and there was none in it , so we had to wait until she arrived back in the room . The food arrived and sandwiches were basic , there was nothing special about them. There was then a big plate with three scones on it anywhere else I have been always had a fruit and a plain one, the scones tasted like they were bought in a supermarket definitely not homemade. Cakes weren’t anything like the beautiful pictures on the website. No one came and asked us if everything was alright or if we wanted more coffee or tea , in fact I had to go and ask for more as the coffee was cold. Would definitely NOT recommend Dunston for Afternoon Tea

Dear Lavina Heasley, Many thanks for reviewing the hotel I was sorry to read that you did not enjoy your afternoon tea. We have around 12 different teas to choose from I am so sorry that these were not offered to you. We have had a number of supply issues in particular with afternoon tea where we have not always gotten what we have ordered. I am so sorry that what was served on that day was not to your liking. I do agree that you should have had a satisfaction check about your tea and a top up of tea and coffee should have been offered, I will address this with the team. Kindest regards David

We regularly stay at Dunston Hall and we’ve always had a great experience until now. The checkin was great, afternoon tea was great but the things that frustrated me; we visited several times lately and most recently in November and January, asked at Check-in “is this your first time?”- doesn’t your CRM tell you we are regular guests? At check out I was faced with a much larger bill as we had a dinner, bed and breakfast rate - receptionist didn’t really listen and demanded I paid for our dinner until I eventually got through to her and a supervisor intervened. Breakfast seems to have gone cheap with streaky bacon and a lack of egg choices. Staying in a suite for the weekend wasn’t cheap, with the whole experience made me wonder if I want to return. Shame really as we used to love Dunston Hall.

Dear Fraser, Many thanks for reviewing the hotel. I was sorry to read about the issues you experienced. I note you had booked online via the website, unfortunately our system would not automatically pick up that you had stayed with us before. If booked with the contact centre they will be able to find your profile and match you to that. This way when you stay at the hotel we can see this information. I am sorry that this happened. We have recently changed the breakfast specification however scrambled egg, poached egg or soft boiled would all be available from the kitchen. We have done this to reduce wastage on breakfast. I do hope you will give us an opportunity to impress you on another occasion. Kindest regards David
