The resort itself is the ultimate chill-out location. Simple, clean and simply relaxing. Arnel and the rest of the staff are so nice and friendly that it actually feels more of a home than an accommodation. Also, the food is great and they even prepare finger-licking good snacks in between dives. They even have a pool table and tv room on the roof top so friends/couples can open a bottle of wine and just spend a nice, relaxing evening there. This place really makes one feel so at home. It's also possible to take a short hike from the resort to the village at the top of the hill. Once up there, you get a great view of the sea.

As for the diving, Arnel and the other divemasters are excellent. I took my PADI Advanced OW with them and it was completely fuss-free. Good equipment, good and clear explanation and instructions from Arnel the instructor. The dive sites we went to had minimal to no currents hence it's perfectfor beginners. The sites around this area are great for macro critter photo opportunities.

I definitely recommend Portulano as a dive resort of choice if one goes to Anilao! I visited 4 months ago but I often reminisce my time there. Hope to visit again soon!

i just simply did some reading on tripadvisor then i made the reservation. It turned out to be a very good experience and i will go back one day. It is not a 5 stars resort with luxury room, fine crusine restaurant and 5-star services But i have no complaint at all. In the 6 days, we woke up with lovely sea view, nice breeze in the morning, then went diving with experience dive crews, eat, rest and sleep without worry at all. The dives were superb, equipments are in good condition, experience dive master and dive crew member; the dive master Choi has really sharp eye sights that he could easily spot very tiny macro like 3,4 mm nudibranch, stone liked juvenile scorpion fish (less than 1.5 cm), rare species juvenile frog fish. The only downside (but we see it as upside), there is some distance from the popular dive sites like secret bay, layag-layag... but the furthest boat trip is still within an hour, better than squeezing with big group of divers, more over, there are good dive sites around the resort. Will definitely come back here again, 6 days were just too short.

Randomly decided to go back to the Philippines again for a dive trip and Batangas popped into picture. Situated 2 hours away from Manila (and coupled with cheap promo fares from Cebu Pacific). I made a impromptu booking for a room at Portulano.

The place was simple but well kept and cosy. Love my room that was right at the corner of the resort. Yet not too far away from the lounge and dining area. Thanks Carmela for arranging that! Much appreciated! =D The view from my room never ceases to amaze me each day. From the time I wake up (sunrise) till sunset. And getting little creatures 'visiting' me just proves to me how clean the ecosystem is at the resort - fireflies. Butterflies. Drangonflies. Geckos. Lizards and spiders. And yes. I actually slept with the balcony windows/doors open every single night coz it was just so cooling.

I stayed for 7 days and in a span of 6 days went for 16 dives. I think I'm a little crazy and addicted to diving but it was all good fun! Choy was an awesome divemaster and being new to the diving scene. I felt safe while diving with him. =)

Meals were prepared buffet style (but they cook as needed - not over piling the pans and making you feel nauseous just looking at them) and I must say Neknek and her team of cooks can really whip up some good stuff! Meals for all 7 days and I never had dishes that were repeated at all! And the dessert! Mango and banana float - simply mouthwatering!

Besides diving. Snorkeling and chilling at the lounge with a book or your gadgets. There isn't anything else one can do there but it was indeed a relaxing trip.

Ask me if I'll go back again and I'll say yes without a doubt! =D

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to book this trip. We were supposed to go on a company outing that weekend but some couldn't make it so it was postponed. Since we've already filed our leaves, I thought, '"why not go out-of-town, anyway?" Im glad we did!

Portulano was rated as the no.1 diving resort in Batangas in 2013. We didn't actually dive but we went snorkeling. The resort didn't have a beach and it was riddled with rocks right upfront but once we took a peek under the clear water, less than 5 meters away, we immediately saw a variety of sea creatures.

The scenery was breathtaking and the setting was simple and intimate. What I loved most was the sunset. Despite the selfies and photo shoots, we still had time to relax and see the sun go down in the horizon.

The owners and their staff were nice and accommodating. They even take the time to chat with their guests to get to know them.

Our overnight stay was not enough though. We plan to come back and hopefully, stay a few more nights.

Thank you, Arnel and Carmela, for your warm hospitality!

The Portulano Dive Resort is not accessible by car. I had to take a short 5-minute boat ride to get there. The resort is very well designed - down to the smallest details. The owners Arnel and Carmela designed and built it. It is rustic in appearance but in reality it is a very comfortable place. It is a perfect place for meditation and relaxation - just to get away from the big city. There were several local guests there for exactly that reason. The resort has a large recreational area and a huge game room with a pool table and hammocks on the terrace. A large TV and a well stocked library. There was never any problems with wi-fi. All the rooms face the ocean. It was nice to wake up in the morning with the soft sound of ocean waves and cool breeze. This is the closest thing to Shangri-la.

I cannot say enough good things about the staff. They were all very attentive, helpful, friendly and competent. That's more than one can say for many resorts. Arnel was there for a couple of nights and Carmelia was away. Daisey ran the place in their absence with a firm hand and a smile. The kitchen staff was incredible. All the meals were excellent, fresh and tasty. They even cooked my favorite dish pancit for me one day. The dive staff was helpful and made sure I had everything I needed for my dives and they handled all my dive gears. Choy was my dive guide and he was finding things (nudibranchs, etc) that I would never have found in a million years. We had fun looking for the elusive glowing nembrotha under my fluoro lights during our night dives .We did find it couple of times. Choy is the BEST dive guide ever and i have been diving for almost 40 years. The boat dive sites are all very close to the resort and the shore dive was easy with plenty of small creatures for my macro camera.

The cost is very reasonable and the staff arranged the land transportation for you. The best thing is that there are no hidden charges. You know upfront how much you are going to pay. Many dive resorts in the area have hidden fees.

I would highly recommend this resort to anyone who needs to relax and get away from it all. It is only 2 hours away from the Manila Airport. As I said, it is about the closest thing to Shangri-la.

just got back from one week here. Great reef, best for smaller critters, not much large fish, except for turtles, which we saw on our very first dive! one big one and one small one. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Pool table and lots of movies if you need a break from diving. good food, simple but always enough to go around. Amazing soups every night too! Great shore dives. I watched the seahorse, who lives right off the dock, for 20 minutes one day…great trip.

Great resort that I really don't mind going back every year. Most important aspect should be their every rooms are seaview rooms and privacy as it's only accessible by resort arranged boat. It was not crowded at all for the past 2 times I visited so I enjoyed a very quiet and relaxing stay. Staffs and resort owners are very friendly and they will help you with whatever they could. Additional points for divers especially macro lovers, house reef itself is already a super muck site that various kind of nudis is very common, very high chance of spotting bob-tailed squids and frogfishes by eagle-eyes dive guides. Looking forward for my next visit.

I'm a US resident but nevertheless manage to be a regular at Portulano. I obtained my advanced open water certification from Arnel ca. 2008 and have been back two more times since. Arnel and Carmela are perfect hosts--warm, laid back, and knowledgeable--and that's reflected in the great crowd of divers they attract. It's easy to show up solo and have dive buddies instantly. The house and boat staff are all excellent, as are the dive masters that help out now and again (Winston led most of my dives on the last trip and was great all around). There's tons to see in the house reef and surrounding sites. I'm eager to see the new additions and renovations to the facilities on my next visit.

There are plenty of places to dive in the Philippines, and even in Batangas, but I keep coming back to Portulano. Highly recommended for divers.

- Mike

Choosing Portulano was more of an act of serendipity. I had a selection of resorts but for some reason Portulano's website, reviews, and photos drew me in. I was there to do a little soul searching read books during my two night stay. I didn't want a TV nor did I need it for the first time in my life. I just wanted a place secluded and quiet where I could think and find joy in nature. And I did. The room I took was P2,800 a night and included all meals, buffet style. The room was the least expensive of them all and did not have any air conditioning. And for the first time again, I didn't mind not having air conditioning (when I'm the type that loves the cold). The breeze was perfect and the sound of the waves so gentle, that tranquility began to set in. From the verandah, dining room, and from my bedroom the most glorious sunset one could imagine would take your breath away every single day. In a land known for sunsets, this place blessed me with the most beautiful ones. And for that I'll go back to Portulano. The service is good and the owners Anthony and Carmella are so personable and friendly. It is a great place even for non-divers like my self, an ok place to snorkle, and a truly romantic spot. The only drawback is the food which isn't so great. Aside from that - go there!
