Location: Parking area was easy to locate using the waze app and very secure. Though the resort is one boat ride away, you'll never worry about the vehicle.

Boat Transfer: One of the points of improvement they can do is upgrade the boat, atleast to have a tarp roof on the ones that they use for bad weather. Good thing it was only drizzling when we arrived and that the boat ride is only about 10mins.

Resort: Superb. Nice mediterranian-ish interiors. Clean. Peaceful. Relaxing. Great view of the sea. Loved that they have a game room/area and that is separate from another area where guests can hang out. Both have a very nice view of the sea.

Room: Loved our room, the topdeck seaview. It may be hard to reach since it is at the top floor of the resort, but the view from the balcony is breathtaking. Bathroom was clean. They also provided the toiletries and towels, so no need to worry about that.

House Reef: Very nice. No need for a boat ride to see marine ife. Deep and shallow ones can be found right at the front of the resort. One suggestion is to place a raft in the middle of the sea tied up to the shore so snorklers can take a rest without the need to go back to the shore.

Food: Limited choices but all are really good. Loved that they included 3 meals in the rates and does not have any corkage for any food that you will bring. I find this very considerate of them with their guests.

Staff: Very friendly and courteous.

Overall: Very recommendable place when you just want to getaway from the hustle and bustle of Manila. Rates are not cheap, but aren't too high either considering their amenities. I would definitely come back!

We've dived in quite a few places in PH. I found the price/value for this resort to be much too high! But it is friendly and well-run.

Rooms with a/c were priced the same as the 5 star hotels executive level rooms in Alabang or Makati that we stayed at... which also included food and free-flow alcohol in evenings. Yet the rooms at Portulano are just basic. Food is good and plentiful but also very simple.

The best part is the chilled and quiet setting of the resort. It is very comfortable to lounge around. The communication with email and booking is very quick and thorough. They keep the customers informed about weather and if it is possible to dive, etc. This is quite important as the resort is only accessible by boat and located around a bend. So bad weather means it is not possible to get there.

We dived end of June and caught some early monsoon weather so there were only 1 dive per day possible and it was quite rough. We only stayed the weekend for 2 nights.

The dive shop is professional. We had our own gear. Cost was almost 1500 pesos per dive plus daily park fee of 150. So a 2 dive package with equipment rental will cost you just over $100usd. For SE Asia, this is quite high and compared to Puerta Galera also much higher.

Getting there is quite complicated and also the only logical choice for a weekend was to rent a car. The location is a bit remote and took quite some time to arrive on the smaller roads after the pay highway ended. But their directions on the website are precise and very helpful to print out and then use with a mobile navigation app like: WAZE.

My feeling is that the prices that they are charging reflect their aspiration to become a 5 star resort, not a 3 star resort (as I feel it is).

While we make every effort for guests to see what kind of resort we are so that expectations are not only met but exceeded, this review only shows me that it is all a matter of knowing what you want and appreciating the difference. A HOTEL in the city and a BOUTIQUE RESORT are 2 very different things. I disagree that our costs are steep, in fact we have always been categorised by TripAdvisor as a value hotel. Our highest overnight rates for a double room goes up to 3,900 PHP per person, with 3 meals and single at almost 5,000 but with 3 meals as well. Now that is cheap even if you compare it to Manila 5 star hotels. Did I mention that this place is far from the crowded, commercialised resorts and areas? You get a full view of the ocean, right at your veranda, you jump in swim with the fish, most probably a sea turtle and get a glimpse of the center of marine biodiversity a few steps from your balcony. The remoteness is part of the charm. You don't usually get to a place like that, with abundant marine life at your doorstep just 2 hours away from the city. This doesn't compare to a 5 star hotel in Makati where you get an awesome view of the buildings, the shopping malls and a breeze of fresh carbon dioxide during traffic hours. You simply cannot compare apples to oranges as the saying goes. We are a BOUTIQUE RESORT that offers local charm and character. We are definitely not trying to be a 5 star or even 3 star hotel NOR DO WE WANT TO BE ONE. It's in fact our goal not to be "hotelish". We find that too typical, polished, commercialised and lacking in character. Besides, you can get that anywhere you go in the world. We want LOCAL CHARACTER, so our rooms are made local style, inspired by our own travels: concrete beds combined with local materials inspired by the mediterranean, carefully chosen decoration from native carvings of Palawan to antique windows and wind vents from 1930's old houses of Pampanga and even lamps from Egypt and Morocco. All this with a full view of the ocean, right from your bedside, you don't even have to get out of bed to your balcony to see it. Now, just to get things into the proper perspective, there are 5 star style resorts found along a beach, they cost PHP 10,000-20,000 per night with breakfast, more or less the same price you get in Shangri La Mactan Cebu. Some Boutique places charge even more like 25,000 per night. Maybe that would be the better comparison because you are at the beach not in the city.

There are so many dive spots near the resort. You don't need to ride for longer than 10 minutes to reach the next dive site. Loved staying on the seaside room. It's great to let your bedroom catch all that sea air.

During the labor day weekend, some friends and I went to Portulano Dive Resort to get our diving certifications. Portulano is a small resort located in Anilao, Batangas. It is approximately 2 hours away from Manila. The drive is easy and you will not really encounter traffic unless there is a fiesta in one of the towns you pass through. Portulano itself is not accessible by car. What guests do is either get dropped off or park their cars at the Portulano enclosed parking area. From Portulano's parking, Portulano has a boat that ferries its guests to and from the resort.

The first thing I noticed and loved about the resort was that it did not stick out. The resort looks like it's part of the landscape. There aren't too many rooms, so it's best to reserve in advance (usually, this resort is fully booked). They have rooms with air conditioning and rooms without. I chose to reserve a room without air conditioning. At first I was worried because it might be hot, but surprisingly there was a great breeze. Also, since the resort is small and multi-level all the rooms have a great view!

Aside from the rooms, there is a dining area and a veranda area. You'll find this on the 2nd floor. It's nice to relax a the veranda and just chat with friends. Portulano also has a game room, which you can find on the 3rd floor. In the game room there is a ping pong table, a billiards table and a dart board. There are also board games. Also on the 3rd floor is an area with hammocks, perfect for afternoon naps. On the ground floor is a pool where you can hang out and where the dive masters conduct their contained water dives. Warning though, the pool is filled with salt water!

Aside from the amenities, the staff is friendly. They are all accommodating and always have smiles on their faces. Service is prompt, food is good. Portulano doesn't feel like a commercial establishment, it feels like home. You will see the owners Carmela and Arnel walking around, talking to friends, guests and getting ready to dive. You'll also see their son hanging around the resort.

As to the diving part, their dive masters are great! The equipment was well maintained and renting equipment from them was easy as pie. Dive sites were great, very mild currents and perfect for beginners.

Can't wait to go back!

This was my 2nd trip to Portulano, the first was just a month ago ... It was barely a month ago that I came back and I was already excited to go back ... This resort is simply unique ...

It is run by a loving couple - Arnel and Camila , who are both passionate about diving ... They have setup this lovely little dive resort as though its a cosy home ...

Food here is served buffet style , hence you get about 4-6 dishes of home cooked goodness ... the deserts are also fantastic -- you must try the buko pandan and mango float ... Heavenly ....

Accomodation is simple, the room comes with two twin beds, clean sheets and AC , the bathroom is nice and simple ... perfect for laying those tired bones after a day of diving ...

Diving : The main attraction .... Portulano is blessed to have its own house reef .. just gear up and jump off the small pier and your into a beautiful coral garden ... down the slope and there is a sandy area that they have artificial reefs full with sea life ... Take a 5 minute boat ride and you arrive at sites such as Dive & trek and Cavern... Take a 15 minute boat ride and you arrive at magical sites such as Cathedral ( the cross between the boobs ) and Koala .... Its been 10 years since I dived and these place have given me a renewed love for diving ...

The people ... As i mentioned Arnel and Camilla are great and friendly , they will treat their guest like family and friends , rather than as guest or customers ... But ... there is also a great team of staff members behind them that makes the stay all the more special ... You will get two amazing dive masters - Choy and Elmer who are very professional and very good at spotting sea life .. You get the Daisy at the FOH , who is extremely help ful in any of your request ... the kitchen crew ... I will always appreaciate anyone who can please my tummy and they have done well ..... Also you get the boat crew , who are soo hard working in pampering the divers, they will effortlessly carry your gear to the boat and off the boat each dive ...

Overall .... Portulano is an experience that should not be missed ....

This review is long overdue - been here few times in past 6 years and this place still amazes me every time. Why I will go back repeatedly are

1. Continuous effort to upgrade the resort - creation of little corners and leisure activities for divers/non divers to have a truly relaxing holiday. Even when the resort is full, our group including non diver friends had several options to hang out in many of the peaceful spots available. I love the little touches in the rooms and use of natural materials - giving a very rustic feel. the common areas were kept spotlessly clean including the sofas, cushions and food areas. Most importantly, there were NO mosquitoes. it takes a lot of effort to maintain those standards.

2. Staff - most of them have been there for years, remember our names and birthdays. I like their friendly smiles, attentiveness and professional service standards. Dive crew are very hardworking, the guides are protective of the reefs - which is good. Troy has bionic eyes - he spots many very tiny marine life - some smaller than size of rice grain at every dive.

3. Food - Simply outstanding. It gets better each time. And I love that brick oven. Buffet style means I get to eat as much as I can and struggle to fit into the wetsuit after.

4. The owners - who make our stay very special. Their warmth, personal touch makes us feel very much at home with each visit.

Just got back around 2 days ago from Manila. Me, my brother and our friend had great time in Batangas with 10 dives in 4 days and ate too much deserts from the resort.
We really planned this scuba diving trip for around 8 months and the email just back and forth around that time. The response was quick so we did not miss a thing there.
When we first arrive, it was about 8 evening and we were surprised that the resort was somehow had a thick SPANISH tradition design. The services there were awesome, everywhere you went, there would be smiles. The two mix breed labrador, Beuer and the smart: Tank, would welcome you too.

Best of all, this resort is located far away from other resorts and rich of its marine lives. I bet other modern resorts will have hard times in 5 years to come because starting to pack and the corals will be off. Lucky for this resort as there is no possibility for a road can be made there. Only by boat you will arrive there.

Every morning when I woke up, opening my eyes to the sea without rise from my bed, I really hoped to see something cruising by, perhaps dolphins or dolphins. But I was not that lucky but hey, our dives were awesome. Thanks to Choy, our dive guide. He was quick and knew good spot for dives.
Everyday was just chilling, swimming and diving, got back to the resort, and had our dines. Ahhh...then a bit of kayaking would help you for not spoiling the fun after food.
Life will never be so perfect.
If you are lucky, you could be the one who had perfect timing for dolphins and whale sharks cruising by. You never know......
If I go to Batangas again, this resort will be the one a yes sir yes sir stay place for me....not others.
Ah, one more thing, if you have a plan to have this trip, bring your couple. Super perfect for romantic scenes every single day to see sunset and to hear the voice of the sea. You out of nowhere there, so it will be so natural.
Not recommended for kids below 8 tough.

I decided to book a dive trip with some friends from work, we had a mix of experienced, new, and non divers and ended up with a total of 8 in the group with 5 rooms.

We arranged everything with the resort including transportation from Manila in a "12 seater" van which barley fit the 8 of us despite their assurances it would be good for a group of expats. We did all fit but if I had to do it over I would have split the group into two cars.

On arrival at the resort parking we were greeted by a boat but it was too small to accommodate the group so we had to call and ask them to send another. They may have had a boat out doing dives, I am not sure.

As I said we had a few non-divers in the group who decided they would take the discover scuba course which was conducted in a rocky area with a bit of surf (they did not really have a better place to do this). This environment created additional stress on the new divers and was not the ideal place to conduct training. I would not recommend this resort as your first dive site, though I do recommend it if you are already a diver.

They also grouped the more and less experienced divers together in one group which often led to shorter dives, they really should try to split the groups better.

Other than that I really enjoyed the diving and would probably visit again.

The hotel needs to replace things like their bed linens and needs to clean or replace the shower heads so there is more water pressure and a few other maintenance issues I would expect to find at a place like this.

The food was good and plentiful, and they made a really good mango banana shake.

Overall I would recommend them if you want a place to go diving, but not if you want a romantic getaway.

Response from diveaddiction, Owner at Portulano Dive Resort
Responded Oct 26, 2014
THE HOUSEREEF IS KNOWN AS A DIVETRAINING SITE. I strongly disagree with the conclusion that it is not an ideal area for beginner divers, many dive instructors with experience in the Batangas/Anilao area would agree with me. One primary reason is that there are less currents in the area and it is a cove making it calmer than most areas in Batangas. To make better conclusions on such matters, a little more investigation on local knowledge and circumstances would be best. Instructors, Divemasters and staff are always ready to offer insight into the local conditions. The area is known in the diving community as the ideal location for dive training. What made it difficult in this instance was that the training pool was under renovation so confined skills (confined 1 for intro dives) usually done in shallow water pool had to be done in the shallow shore area instead where the ocean floor is not flat and requires some adjustment. Other groups doing introductory dives did okay, so having the pool is really ideal, it also depends on the student's comfort level as well. The ocean, while less comfortable and reassuring to some, the shallow water is a well controlled environment well within safety standards. DIVE GROUPING SOMETIMES TAKES MORE TIME TO FIGURE OUT: This was particularly challenging because each diver had a demand for himself, his buddy and for the group, which was composed of about 6 divers. There was a main DM and a 2nd guide who served as a back up. This should have been more than enough but the plan of splitting the group up so experienced divers can stay longer did not work out for day 1 for many reasons. A different arrangement and even a change in DM had to be done for the following day which worked much better. Dive grouping usually smoothens out after the 1st dive, in this case there were more group & individual concerns and demands than usual, so it took at least 2 dives to fix groupings based on actual dives. We evaluate groupings not just based on license, number of dives, dive certification, but OBSERVATION OF SKILLS in an ACTUAL DIVE rather than what divers claim or present as experience. This is why adjustments are usually made after a dive or two. The first dive usually serves as an evaluation and is done in easier sites. ON SHOWERS & OTHER NITS: With facilities right beside the ocean in a more isolated area, maintenance of showerheads and water pressure are a big challenge but maintenance for this has been very good with hardly any complaints. Positive guest feedbacks really inspire and encourage us in this area. We’ve had no guest issues about the linens, but those in the wing referred to are really due for replacement and we have already installed new linens in the top deck. It’s important to know and expect that this is a Boutique Resort and not a typical 5 star hotel. Refer to room photos in the main website www.portulano.com to see details such as beds, linens, showers which are all made visible and clear so guests know what to expect. TRANSPORTATION: The initial recommendation was to have 2 vehicles and this was presented but the concern was that not everyone would be willing to pay for an extra car. After several re-arrangements the 12 seater van was recommended as a compromise, and conditions were made clear in email correspondence quoted and sent as follows... "You should fit since it’s for 12, but that would be tight. Space would be reasonable enough and okay to fit 8 people. It’s just that roominess as you know is pretty subjective." This is the answer to fitting 8 expats, a subjective but clear opinion and best solution with an assurance that it would be a decent fit. Just the same it seems to be the best solution for the group, as they opted for this same arrangement for their return trip to Manila and not 2 vans. In the end this was still the best arrangement to meet everyone's needs. On other matters such as not being a place for a romantic getaway, read reviews on this category as there are a lot of couples who come and enjoy some isolation. It may be harder to experience that if you come as part of a bigger group. LASTLY, we appreciate all the feedback we get, we consider it all seriously and find it to be such a learning experience! We use it as a means to determine what we want for the resort, for our guests, to improve our service, create a better system, present information openly and more accurately, as well as manage expectations better. Thank you so much for taking time to read this.

This was booked as a weekend escape from Manila. I went with two friends. It took about two hours to drive to the boat and then another 30 min. to reach the resort. An easy and hassle-free trip. We stopped in Tagaytay for lunch before catching the boat and to break up our drive. The hotel is isolated and on a cliffside.Tthere are all sorts of little places to chill out and feel like you have the place to yourself. The food is good and there is plenty of food served each meal. They were flexible with meal times and you could eat breakfast until 10ish....lunch 11-2ish and dinner 5-7ish. You could always talk to them and make arrangments for different meal times. You could arrange dives, snorkeling and hikes. There's a pool, but it's for dive training (not swimming and relaxing by). The beach is better to look at and not to lounge on. There's wifi available but it isn't hi-speed (nor is it always working). The rooms are simple and cute. I really enjoyed my stay here. It was simple, no frills relaxing. You are left to pretty much entertain yourself. I'd go here again "to just get away from it all" and relax.
