The receptionist was most helpful on my arrival. I messed up my on-line booking date, and she fixed it all in a flash. I was on my way to the Nakop border post having been on a motorcycle trip through Namibia. Supper needed advance notice because the meat is frozen, and breakfast was extra - two important aspects for bikers. If you want to run a "hotel" as opposed to self-catering, I would suggest you lift the meal side of your game. Other than that, the room was clean and quiet - perfect stopover rest.
We pit_stopped at this extremely cosy, cute, quaint little hotel on our way in and out of Namibia for a quick legg stretch and drinks. On each occasion the personnel receiced us with so much warmth and friendliness. This place has a cosy, old town atmosphere, we can just imagine staying over will be joyous. It is perfectly situated about 2 hours from the Ariamsvlei borderpost.
At first we were sceptical when we saw the hotel from the outside but when we entered we were pleasantly surprised. They were very friendly and professional. Great restaurant with good food for your money and nice neat rooms. I would recommend the hotel for anybody.
Great for staying over on road trips. Good food! Arrived late, on a double booking from booking site but was helped anyway. Rooms are neat and clean. Overall, i would recommend this place as a convenient stopover.
Quick drop off turned into a “Lekker kuier” Reception was warm and Welcoming. Service was second to none... Beer, Colder than the Ice queens heart. Conversations with the managing couple Stefan and Susan was enlightening and Humorous, Lovely and Friendly people that will go off a limb to assist making your stay as joyous as humanly possible... The FOOD oh my goodness the FOOD .... Chips .... Crispy on the outside, Fluffy on the inside ... It’s like having an culinary Orgasm.. Union Rings like no where on the planet .. Not even to mention the rest of the platter.. A Must Visit, a MUST eat ... ENJOY !!
Grunäu is not on my normal back from Namibia. This time due to curfew restrictions, COVID tests and the very high rainfall we were forced to stay close to the border. Stefan and his team went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We had excellent food, very good accommodation and a very convivial evening in the restaurant area with other travellers. I will definitely go back there!
Namibian accomodation has become rather expensive for what you get, especially paying in Rands. Big was our surprise at the cost of the room : simply furnished, but clean and spacious. The bed was particularly comfortable . The cherry on top is of course the food on offer , really well prepared and tasty. The hotel has a very relaxed and no- frills atmosphere, We arrived late , staff was friendly and efficient , and we were able to order a meal, even though the kitchen was practically closed. This is a very good alternative to accomodation on the border.
An unexpected gem in southern Namibia. The rooms were clean.Supplied our group of 40 with dinner and breakfast at very short notice. I have never tasted a pumpkin dish so full of flavour! Excellent and friendly service.
We've stayed at Grunau Country Hotel before and we were a bit disappointed with our last visit. The room furnishings hasn't changed since previous owners but something new and disappointing is the notice that "we've gone green" with no electrical supply to the solar geysers and that you will most probably not have warm water in the morning. Many people prefer to have a shower after a long day on the road and in the morning. We have a solar geyser and it is only switched on for 30 minutes early morning to provide us with hot enough shower water. One waitress attended about 15 guests at the dinner table and food delivery was slow. If one offers rib-eye steak, it is expected to be tender but it wasn't. Every addition (chips, veggies, salad) to a steak or a potjie is extra and then it becomes an expensive meal. We'll revert to Noordoewer for overnight travel accommodation…
It drives me nuts that European tourists to Namibia will fly in, hire a 4x4 with all camping equipment, including a rooftop tent, and then spend almost their entire holiday in lodges and chalets. After our intended overnight stop was again packed out with these people, we had to stay at The Grunau Country Hotel. However, it was a surprisingly nice place to stay, nothing fancy at all, but the shower was very warm, the bed comfortable, the bar quite gemutlich, and you can play pool or snooker if you want to. The highlight for us was dinner, which really made the whole place very much worthwhile. I had the lamb potjie, which is a very traditional country meal, and because it has lots of gravy I opted for the addition of mealie pap (or thick porridge). It was quite a filling combination, more than enough for the hungriest tourist. My wife had the lamb tjops which was also delicious. Please have a look in their freezer if you need to stock up on meat. We bought Springbok biltong and dried sausage (both was R120/500 g) and it was delicious as well. Oh yes, you can park inside a locked yard so your vehicle is safe.…
