We travelled in a group. My partner and i got a fully equiped family room with kitchen and sitting area. We only slept here, hadn't much time. The restaurant is under construction, so we went out for dinner. Sunset and sunrise were beautiful here
I give Grunau chalets 5* because it is perfect for it's purpose. A well-priced budget self-catering stop-over when travelling through the area, large comfortable & clean chalets with a TV, Wi-fi & braai facilies. Friendly reception and a small shop next door at the petrol station where you can buy the basics for self-catering or a braai. Grunau itself is not a destination in itself and you would not spend a minute more there than necessary but the chalets are perfect for an overnight stop when travelling from or to the border at Noordoewer. One might even consider staying there for an extra night and use as a base to do a daytrip to Ais-Ais & Fish River Canyon and avoid the ridiculous cost of self-catering accommodation in those areas.
We booked two chalets for an overnight stay in April 2019. Each chalet is equipped with two single beds (which appears to be standard in Namibia) and a small kitchen unit which includes a small bar fridge, a twin hob stove and a sink. The kitchenette also has a kettle and microwave. Each unit has a dedicated braai (BBQ) outside. I would say that the unit is adequate for short-term self-catering stays, but I would not want to try to cook a full meal there. The beds were okay (a bit soft for my liking), but the bed linen was great. Although the rooms were generally clean, the shower floor and tiles can do with a good cleaning or new grouting. The basin units in both chalets have obviously been exposed to too much water (possibly from a leak), with the result that the chip-board base has started expanding, making them unsightly. Each unit is fitted with an old air conditioner, but I was informed by the owner that new units had been purchased and were waiting to be installed. I think this will be an improvement. The owner was very friendly and when she realised that we had opted for the budget chalets (so that we could have two together) instead of the more luxury chalets, she offered us a reduced rate for the night. The owner offers a very helpful service of selling braai-packs and wood on site. While I have some criticism of the Grunau Chalets, one must bear in mind that we stayed in the budget chalets and we generally enjoyed out stay there.…
I've set myself up on a barren campground. First, it was very easy to find, there was only the Shell petrol station and Grünau chalets. The four campsites were ideally located, each protected from the other. The barbecue area was sheltered from the wind and at an ideal height and the sanitary facilities were great. We were alone there one night, enjoying the sunset. Mrs. Marais is an incredibly nice and likeable woman and her freezer is well filled. We felt very comfortable there.
Clean rooms and relatively fast internet. They were welcoming even when I arrived at 1 am. Bring your own food to prepare as there is no place to buy proper food around, except if you'd like service station shopping (which does offer many choices). Gives great sunrise views.
We wanted to be as near the Ariamsvlei border post for our long trip back to White River. Called ahead and were assured there was a place for us to stay. Made very welcome on arrival and given some tips in terms of what was available nearby. Told there was a restaurant at the hotel in town but we already had a meal prepared to heat up. Convenience shop at the adjacent fuel station was reasonably well stocked with essentials. Camping/caravan stands come with private ablutions which we think is a big plus.
Spacious, self catering rooms, inside and outside seating. Comfortably decorated. Barbeque facilities and fully equipped kitchen. Free parking. Beautiful sunsets and stargazing. Friendly and helpful staff and a convenience store nearby.
Very good overnight stop from Cape town to Windhoek. the new section is good..much better than the older section. At least you have a lawn in the courtyard. Rooms need at least double beds and not two singles.
Very clean and cool rooms. Good Wi-Fi in the rooms. It's a perfect place to stop over being on the intercape bus route you climb off the bus and it is directly in front of you. Also very central for visiting most of the attractions in the area
