I stayed here for a couple of nights in January as a "Staycation". I really enjoyed the warmth of the staff and the cleanliness of the rooms and the public areas were exceptional. As a traveller of over 54 countries and a well seasoned guest in many a BnB/Hotel, I must say that this is amongst some of my most enjoyable stays! It has a very warm welcoming environment and it went beyond my expectation of a family BnB. I didn't expect that the television in the rooms would have working Netflix, this was a real treat, so I indulged and decided to order room service :) I was impressed with their scrumptious Spanish style tapas menu and their draft beer was another cheeky surprise that I would also highly recommend (bit tricky to find here in The Philippines). Overall, a fantastic stay ! ...Oh and I must mention before I forget....Drago - The Great Dane, is their free roaming pooch and he's the best companion for solo travellers...very friendly guy ;)

Stayed at Victoria's Haven with a few friends and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The rooms were pristine, the staff are warm and friendly, and the garden is stunning. The place is perfect if you're looking for a staycation that involves group yoga sessions in the morning and watching Netflix in the evening (yes, they have Netflix, too!). Planning to convince my family to stay here the next time we visit Dumaguete!

We stayed 3 nights at Victoria's Haven and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The place is inviting, warm and fantastic! The facilities are all top notch, rooms are spacious, clean and with AC. The bathrooms are large and the showers are wonderful. By far the best so far in the Philippines. The garden is beautiful as well, and adds a great atmosphere. Food is good and well prepared.
The addition to having Netflix was great for zoning out after a long day adventuring.

The staff were all so lovely, and very helpful! They even teased me a little (with a smile, I loved it) when I ordered for the third time one night (I was famished, hehe) , which made me feel even more at home. Kudos to them, they made the stay perfect.

Also what seals the deal here, is the fact that they were the first place with a real deck of cards. This sounds silly but we'd been looking all over for one and finally found one! They also offer other games (pool, pong and jenga).

There's some very, very minor con (that do no detract at all from the positives), such as the coffee at breakfast not being unlimited (or very warm?).. Which is about the only thing that I can think of that wasn't perfect. But that's so minor it doesn't really matter.

All in all.. STAY HERE! You won't regret it!

Hi sabbaiyosuke, Thank you for taking the time to write us a quick review. Indeed some of our rooms still carry the same design when it was still once a personal home - high windows with shutters to keep them open or closed with a height of about 2.5ft. The concept of our haven ins slightly different yet unique as we kept the traditional/heritage concept to commemorate the home for what it once was to the family who used to live here (our owners). Modern properties tend to have bigger, wider windows and high floors but we only have ground-level rooms accompanied with the wide open spaces which I'm sure you noticed as well. Nevertheless, we are happy you enjoyed the food and your time with us! We hope to have you stay with us again in the near future. Have a safe trip back to Japan!

Someone recommended this place to us in a backpackers group on Facebook. When we arrived we were met by very lovely staff behind the reception desk who gave us a refreshing glass of water. We had arrived a few hours earlier than our check in time so we had to wait around for our room for about 10 minutes but it gave us some time to take in the beautiful surroundings that Victoria’s Haven has to offer! The gardens at this place are beyond perfect, they are tended to daily and honestly the perfect chill spot! (A yoga lovers paradise!)

We were then shown to our room and as we walked through the beautiful dining rooms we totally understood why the other reviews had said that it just felt like Home! Beautiful, authentic decor...! We got to our room and was shown around and told how everything worked which was very helpful! A couple of things that made this place extra great was.... they had NETFLIX! Hot showers! Anddddd my favourite thing was 2 fluffy pillows per person in the bed 😍 (Home comforts!)

This place has so much to offer, after we checked in we went back to the lounging area, played some basketball, darts, table tennis and snooker! There are board games you can play too!

We went and got washed up and decided to go for a little walk, there isn’t much going on within walking distance so I do recommend hiring a bike from Victoria’s Haven. We did and saw some amazing water falls, went to apo island for snorkelling. (Although the hotel does offer tours so if you’re not comfortable with a bike that is an option!)

On our second night we met the hotel owner and finally got to meet the infamous Great Dane Drago! Firstly the owner, Rafa was very friendly and the most down to earth person you’ll meet in the Philippines. He offered us advice on where to go out for dinner, drinks and day tours, they offer these services at the hotel and unlike many hotel owners we’d met previously travelling around he actually just wanted us to enjoy Dumaguete and not keep us in the hotel to spend all our money there.

So at this point we was supposed to leave Dumaguete and head to siquijor but decided to stay another night at Victoria’s Haven because we genuinely loved it that much!

On our last day we hired the bike and went exploring, we got back and washed up for dinner... We actually didn’t eat out anywhere during our stay... because the food is AMAZING! I’m a vegetarian and they changed a few dishes to suit my needs... but the winner for me was nachos and guacamole! I had it 3 nights in a row 🙈 and the breakfasts served in the morning were delicious... they have BEANSSSS! My husband loved the lechon for dinner, he’s been telling everyone about that.

On our last night we had dinner with Rafa & his girlfriend Rachel (and obviously the amazing Drago) and they helped us organise our ferry ticket to siquijor for the next morning and actually were heading to the port themselves and gave us a lift to the port.

If you’re looking for somewhere that is chilled, extremely clean, extremely friendly and where the staff do all they can to make your stay enjoyable, then book this place!!!

Also I must add that during my stay in the Philippines not many people acknowledged me as a woman and they tend to ask my husband questions even if it was about my order, here at Victoria’s Haven was the first time I was acknowledged especially when the young man was taking my order for dinner. So if I could give them a 10/10 I would!!!!

Hi Aysh! We'd also like to say "Just... Wow" along with "where do we begin to even thank you"!. We are extremely amazed, flattered, humbled and happy at the same time, to know that this is what you had felt the entire time you stayed with us. We can literally say that we are left quite speechless for this review. We work very hard every day to ensure that all our guests are taken cared of and that our staff interact well and make everyone feel comfortable and at home aside from the amenities and facilities we have at our humble haven. Again, words cannot be placed here to describe our gratitude towards your review and it motivates us more to work just as hard to provide the same experience to all our other guests. Happy Anniversary again to you and Calum and we hope you had a safe trip back to England! :) PS: Drago sends his regards to your little man and hopes to meet him some day too!

We stayed 4 nights in a Deluxe Queen bed room. It was lovely. Hot showers, AC, Netflix and more. The facility is a bit out of town but easily accessible via Tricycle. It has pool table, ping pong table, games and lovely courtyard. We felt safe. The breakfast is delicious and included. There is a bar there and we had beers and late night appetizers that were also excellent. We never had to wait for our food but often we ordered our breakfast the night before to be ready at an early hour. ( they begin serving breakfast at 6am which helped us as we were traveling early to scuba dive in Dauin and it is a 30min-45min commute) I would say the only negative is it may be a little pricey for Dumaguete prices, but we were happy. We also had two sons arrive and stay in a two twin bed room for 3 nights. This room was a little less lovely but still perfectly fine for their needs.

Hi Leslie! Thank you so much for this rating and review! We can't be more thankful and happy that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us! We hardly got to see you guys as you were out practically everyday! But at the same time, that is something we always recommend to our guests - to explore and experience nature in Dumaguete because there's nothing quite like it! Reviews like this really help us know what we are doing right and helps us continue working on those aspects to provide great experiences to each of our guests. Thanks again and we hope to see you again some day! Have a safe trip back to the US! :)

This is a long review but please read to the end.

Having researched this "Haven" on the internet [victoriashaven.com] it looked ideal for a week's stay in a pleasant resort that boasted to be “homely” with breakfast included.

This review is factual, not personal Though beautifully furnished, the resort just was not what we expected from studying the web site.
Many will think it is a "Haven", a peaceful place, ( Cambridge Dictionary definition ) Unfortunately we don't.

We booked a "Manalo" room with the resort directly 3300 Peso a night booked 7 nights. 23100 Peso. Not cheap but it looked worth it. I prefer to book direct rather than have the resorts profits eaten by a booker firm. But we could have saved 1500 Peso a night with Agoda we discovered too late!

Arrived mid afternoon after 6 hours on a regular bus. The area around is not pretty, its industrial.
Check in, no welcome drink, not even water.
Allotted room 9, a Junior King room. No names or numbers on the door, so have I got the room I booked? No way to tell.
Room large, split air-con which is good, they are quieter than through-the-wall ones. Massive shower room and walk in wardrobe. Room is however devoid of a window, rather it is like a cell with borrowed light glazing high up through the bathroom and similarly through into the bedroom with 4 ill fitting Venetian blinds to blank some of the light.
Discover why there is no window, the room is on the highway, National Highway Route 7, used by buses, cane trucks, tricycles, emergency vehicles, 24 hours a day. And I mean right on the highway, its just the other side of the wall. So no ventilation for fresh air. Looks like we’re going to need ear plugs and eye shades to sleep here.

The garden is lovely, superb grass, no loungers or chairs allowed. A total wasted resource.
There are loads of good things, comfy beds, excellent linens, good bar, friendly staff, big smart TVs, Netflix, internet access everywhere, strong hot showers, ceiling fans ( though ours was too noisy to use) and 6 of the 10 rooms are not on the highway. And a really friendly Great Dane dog!

Bar, Kitchen and eating area is under a massive open sided industrial tin shed. Large noisy diesel loader shovels working in the mill the other side of the car park. The accommodations are a conversion of the family home inside the site of their current copra business.

Piped music. Muzak, jazz and rap, everywhere, to drown the noise of the diesel loaders and copra mill we are told when we requested it turned down. No other guests around that we can see.
Dinner menu is on the expensive side but we had eaten lunch so we skipped dinner.

Retired early, slept badly due to traffic noise and another couple arguing loudly somewhere in the house in the early hours when the road was a bit quieter.
Next night I had to bang on the next door at 2 am. They thought is acceptable to shout over the TV at that time!

The included breakfast is Filipino style, rice, fried tinned meats, eggs, pancakes etc., not what we westerners crave for. Made do with an omelette, requested plain, came with onion, cheese, potato and pineapple filling. Also had a nice fruit platter and 2 Americano coffees.
The breakfast seemed to be paltry, tea or brewed coffee included but an Americano coffee is an extra at 100 peso we discovered 2 days later.
Thing just didn't please us so we usually dinned out, and made the best of the breakfast fair.
We did eat one very good dinner on the third night, a roasted tenderloin meal and a chicken breast meal, beautifully cooked and served but without any vegetables at all, just meat.
Finally snapped and demanded an American type breakfast on day 4 and got it, as an extra of course. Two perfect eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, so why not have it on the menu?

After 4 days of bad sleeping and struggling with the menu we decided to leave 2 days early, had a long discourse with the owner, Rafael Miranda, a nice guy doing his best.
Parted on good terms, his resort simply did not suit us and disappointment led to dissatisfaction, it happens. He did kindly cancel our food extras bill, and stand us a lovely meal on our last night, thank you Rafael.
No refund offered or expected. Please make your own mind up about this resort.

Response from Rafael M, Manager at Victoria's Haven
Responded Jan 28, 2020
Hi Samuel! It was a pleasure meeting you but at the same time a sad moment after what you have experienced with us. We would like to tackle them in points so our readers can also understand clearly. 1.) In your first sentence, you immediately mentioned "resort" and perhaps that is where you expected something else upon arriving to our B&B. Our website does NOT mention anything about us being a resort but a B&B instead. Also, perhaps you considered our site to "boast" about being homely but our intention was to share with the public that this was indeed our ancestral family's home which was built about 35 years ago and has now been converted into an accommodation establishment with amenities that most local hotels/resorts wouldn't have (as proven in our previous reviews). We've considered ourselves a "Haven" exactly due to the fact that we openly let our customers know that we are located along the main road just like other hotels in the area (transparency) except that we have a peaceful and open garden ambiance which not a lot would expect to see upon entering our compound. In addition to that, it is also mentioned on the "About Us" section that our B&B is located inside the same compound and across the copra business of my father yet you indicate that this was something that bothered you during your stay. 2.) In regards to our rooms - we have kept the original design of Victoria herself to, again, continue with the concept of it being the exact design when it was once a home. Since you "studied" our website as mentioned in your review, perhaps you would have noticed that these were the designs of all our rooms (windows with foldable blinds included) yet you continued to book the room you had. In addition to that, there are laws (depending on where you are) about hotels having/not having windows that open up for safety purposes. We understand that you checked in at Essencia Hotel afterwards and I believe their windows do not open as well yet you didn't write about that in your review on their account? 3.) We would also like to correct your description of our kitchen/bar area. We are NOT located under a tin shed. In fact, the structure of our open area is made out of steel beams and a proper roof with insulation to deflect the heat and our readers will attest to that based on pictures of our show kitchen and bar uploaded on Trip Advisor. Moreover, our eating area there is different from the air-conditioned space that seats 30 people inside the B&B which you knew about as that is where we spoke. 4.) You mentioned that our garden not having chairs was a "wasted resource" yet you also tell us that you didn't want to stay out under the sun due to health concerns you had. We chose to not have lounge chairs in our garden since we spend a lot of money on maintaining it to keep it "lovely" and "superb" as you have indicated and use it as a great spot for photoshoots and simply leaving a nice view for our guests to see. Aside from that, we do not have a swimming pool YET which will definitely be a great addition to adding chairs afterwards so guests can cool off after some time under the sun. 5.) You also had quite a big demand to completely shut down our background, jazz music which we willingly did for you. We have never done this for anyone else but it seems that you had a lot of special requests during your stay which we happily accommodated. More than that, you did not bother asking us for anything special to be made for your breakfast until you "snapped" and rudely asked for a special breakfast. If you had just informed us of your requests, we would have gladly made you any breakfast you would have liked just as how we accommodated other special requests you had. Aside from that, our Breakfast Manu CLEARLY indicates that brewed coffee or tea was free of charge for in-house guests and that is why there were prices indicated on the other specialty coffees on the bottom part of the menu. 6.) Upon our conversation at the restaurant, you also threatened to write us a 1-star review if you "didn't mean the owner because we are reviewers". Starting off a conversation that way can also seem "boastful" as you continued to make rude comments about Filipinos and Americans which had no correlation to our topics of discussion. You knew that because I physically showed my disappointment on the condescending comments you made about different races of people and how you said you "have been in the industry long enough and know that Trip Advisor is owned by Booking.com" (which is false by the way). Moreover, you say "no refund offered or expected" which is completely false as you somewhat had a "role play" discussion with your wife by being vocal about your desire for a refund and then pretended for me to not hear it. Perhaps you were simply shy to ask me directly just as how you couldn't ask for a special breakfast made for you. I cancelled your incidental charges not by gesture but again by your request which I willingly did. You enjoyed showing off your knowledge about industry and tell us what strategies we should take to improve our business. Like how "we (Victoria's Haven) should not allocate all our rooms to Agoda to maximize profits from cancellations" but at the same time when I shared to you that nowadays, there is what we call a "Channel Manager" that manages our inventory real time to all our integrated channels and at the same time we can collect payments from cancelled booking, you could not understand and insisted that we were doing the wrong thing. You also mentioned that you chose to book with us directly so you can help hotels save on commissions to other agencies and we are thankful for your gesture. Yet, when I explained to you that Agoda seldom has these unauthorized discounts to get the best rates, you were delighted by the information and decided to book your next hotel through Agoda because you said the price was indeed cheaper. So it confuses me that you comment on things you do or would like yet you sometimes do the opposite. In addition to that, you approached me during my lunch meeting and told me that "Agoda doesn't know what they are doing because my first night at my next hotel is cheaper than the following night". First of all, it is not Agoda creating rates for the hotel - it is the hotel themselves and maybe they practice dynamic pricing just like airlines do. To be honest, Samuel, just as how you did not enjoy your time with us, I also did not enjoy having you as our guest. We have never received SO much special requests and complaints every day since we have opened our hotel - not to mention that "all knowing" behavior you presented as you scoffed and giggled when we had conversations. For readers and Trip Advisor editors, I write this not out of anger but, like him, I write based on facts on his condescending behavior to all our staff and racist comments. I would ask hotel owners to also consider or remember this review in protection of your hotel's online reputation as some guests can be very difficult to please and can hurt business by making things seem very 1-sided. Perhaps ancestral/family homes in provincial towns are not the types of accommodation establishments that suit your needs/desires. One thing we can fully agree and admit is the fact that you indicated that we needed more vegetables on our dishes and we are happy to say we have taken that advice and took quick action to add them to our dishes/menu. Nevertheless, we hope you enjoy the rest of your time traveling the Philippines! Thank you!

I stayed at Victoria's Haven recently back in late July/ early August for a holiday over 11 days or so. I had to make some extra bookings to extend my stay as the original booking was for 7 days and so I experienced at least 3 different rooms in that time. I started with the Junior King suite for a night before moving to Palmera Suite for 6 more nights. Then I extended for a further 4 nights and tried another Junior King while I continued to explore Dumaguete and Siquijor. Getting around was made easier via a motorbike rental for at least 8 days which VH assisted me with.

Overall I'd recommend VH very much and it is fairly rated as 3 stars overall. However some rooms could easily be found in a 4 star hotel. Really the standard of the rooms was exceptional for the price you pay. The Junior King was very clean and modern with giant TV, Netflix included, and very comfortable with large bed and medium firm foam mattress which supports your body weight well. All rooms are very spacious. Secure lockable safe also. The service from the front desk is very helpful and friendly and the owner Rafa is sometimes on hand to give a warm welcome and guiding hand. You will experience very typical hospitality here at VH Dumaguete.
You can ask for food delivered to your room and this is no extra charge. I was also ill for a day with a bad stomach and one member of staff provided some medicine from her own bag. I ate out most of the time for dinner but had breakfast there most days, as I had paid this included with room, as well as some lunch and dinner on a couple of occasions.

Overall positives:
*Beautiful manicured garden area
*Relaxed and pleasant atmosphere
*Good selection of food and drink
*Helpful staff
*Good quality American Pool table
*Very safe and secure premises
*High quality modern rooms and amenities
*Very clean, and Housekeeping also clean to suit your timing and the staff are very accommodating and respectful

Overall cons (but some not fault of VH):

*Power cuts in the area which happened a few times. This then triggers the emergency lighting in the room which can be quite alarming.
*Extensive road works nearby which held up traffic throughout my stay. However the two above may be related and I'm sure this will improve with time.

*The WiFi connection is poor in some rooms and better in others. Each room has different connection I think to spread the bandwidth a little to help customers. However I found myself coming out to restaurant area to use WiFi a few times. Again, though, I'm not sure if this problem is also to do with the geographical area and outwith VH control.

*Distance from city centre, however this was fine on a motorbike. Others may get impatient on a tricycle. There is a plus side about being away from the hustle and bustle though.

*The Palmera Suite is a bit of a novelty and a little too dark for my taste and I'd recommend VH invest in a microwave oven instead of the old-fashioned toaster machine for the times when guests are bringing back food or just making something microwaveable. I realise the accommodation isn't classified as self-catering but it would be a bonus for some. Also the aircon in that room I found gets very cold and the position above bed means that it can get quite uncomfortable at night. However, I'm not an aircon expert and there may have been a setting that I didn't know about. However the bed in there is gigantic like a super triple king and very good mattress. Linen also is good quality. I had a sink which collapsed from the wall in bathroom but this was repaired quickly by the handyman.

*My other recommendation is to install sanitary water hoses in all toilets as this is one device really appreciated by foreign travellers especially. I experienced it in one Junior King but not in others.

*Some items on food list a little expensive and some not included in breakfast so be careful. The coffee is refilled though. The food quality was different and a little less consistent on second half of my stay so not sure if a different chef was there.

*The motorbike hire was expensive compared to the exact same bike I hired on Camiguin Island (155cc), even with discount, but I was grateful to have a relatively new model with plenty of power to get past the traffic.

If I was to do it again, and wasn't island hopping, then I'd hire a bike every day provided I got a better deal in advance.

Thanks to VH for making my stay a pleasant experience.

Response from Rafael M, Manager at Victoria's Haven

Hi Duncan! It was a pleasure having you stay with us for quite a while! We thank you for writing us a very thorough and positive review about our little haven and we are extremely delighted to know that you had a memorable stay with us and that you would return again some day. With regards to your "cons" comments, we are very happy to inform you that everything you have pointed out has been fixed and addressed. As for the A/C, we completely agree that it being located on top of the bed's headboard may cause the air to flow towards your legs as you sleep. For this, you can easily change the vent's angle to point to a different direction if you are feeling a bit too cold with the breeze targeting your body. As for the motorbike, we were able to inform you of our rates as you requested a special/bigger scooter compared to our regular-sized scooter which is priced at around Php500/24hrs. We barely make any profits out of this specific scooter as we too agree that it is a bit pricey but we also want to make sure our guests get what they ask so we do not dissappoint. :) Other than that, we worked immediately on the points you had raised and we can assure that you will see a difference on the few issues you had during your stay. Thank you very much and we wish you a pleasant trip back!

About a 5 minute tricycle ride. You can get the tricycles right outside the port entrance. They are all lined up there.
