We stayed here on Nov 2022 for a temporary work assignment. Sad to say that there was no emergency power generator or emergency lights as there was a power failure in the area when we arrived. There was free breakfast. Good for a night sleep to pass by.

First of all, and we stayed in one of the suite rooms, we would stay again, this is a clean place and quiet place, good staff etc, but some unusual issues:

As per website, and after a long, hot, and tiring day, we finally arrived to our room where my first action was to open the minibar for a beer ..... There's no beer and there is a sign in the room, and it is written in their rules, that dring, smoking and gambling on the premises are strictly forbidden and they will fine any offender PHP1,000.00.

I can understand smoking, perhaps gambling also, but when the make a can or few of beer illegal then I might take such a rule seriously!

Please note the website reads "hot and cold shower" whilst making no mention of a bathroom or shower room. There is a shower room but, to be honest, I've seen larger cupboards, the shower room probably measures about 1.5m x 0.9m and contains a toilet, where there isn't even enough room for a man to stand immediately in front of it, and a sink and, if taking a shower, everything gets wet whilst one is spraying water in very close proximity to an electric light switch.

We had booked for 3 nights but, alas, when we returned to our room on the 3rd evening there was a brown out, a neghborhood power failure, and, surprisingly, Gloreto do not have so much as a standby generator to maintain even the basics such as electric light thus, for safety reasons, we were unable to occupy our room and had to book alternative accommodation.

When mentioning to the staff that, only a few weeks ago, I had bought a 6.25KVA generator for a mere PHP20,000.00 and I've seen generators in their local hardware store they made excuse that the manager had a generator on order ... yeah right, and my name's Bjorn Yesterday!

We were initially booked at the other "older" Gloreto Hotel but since we were travelling with a 1 1/2 yr old daughter, we opted to transfer to the more accessible T. Calo branch. I understand that this is newer and when we checked had a bigger bathroom than the other one.

Amenities provided were toilet paper, clean towels, soap and shampoo but minus the toothbrush and toothpaste. In case you need one, you can easily buy from them. The room has hot and cold shower, a sink, a dresser/vanity table with chair, tv and a lampside on each side of the bed. It also had an open cabinet with hangers if you want to hang your clothes. The room can accomodate an extra bed (cost is about 250 pesos) with still more than enough space to move around. The one thing we didn't like (I guess this is true for the whole province because we also noticed this in one of the restaurants in the city) is the smell of the water. It had a rusty smell to it. Maybe because people were saying that water is from deep wells? It's still good and tolerable even for brushing teeth but use mineral water instead to avoid any problems.

The room is clean and tidy with clean sheets and a very comfortable bed but contrary to one of the reviews here, there was no generator. The town had begun rotating daily one-hour power interruption since about 4 days before we arrived. On the day we checked-in, the interruption came at around 2 pm when it was awfully hot! We ended up taking turns fanning my sleeping daughter to make it more comfortable for her. Tip: If you happened to visit during the summer months, don't stay in Room 101 like we did (this was one of only 2 rooms available when we arrived)because the curtains were not thick enough to block the heat of the sun. Plus, this room was right in front of the driveway where plastic roof was installed which made the heat more unbearable. Ask for a room away from the road and cooler suroundings.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and was a choice from among 5-6 set plates, nothing special but good enough to last until lunch. It was also served quick. Breakfast rate for an extra person is only 88 pesos.

Staff were helpful on both locations and understood why we needed to transfer. They were quick to assist us and brought us to the other hotel via local transport free of charge. They were respectful and always greeted guests with a good morning or good evening. Oh, and the hotel had free wifi , too! Access was swift even from the room. Also, if you are Catholic, chapel is just in front of the hotel. Although its construction is still on-going, mass was held nonetheless on the Sunday we were there. Transport to and from the hotel is easy and cheap even if you can't speak Cebuano. A mall, several restaurants, convenience stores and banks are very accessible.

I would love to stay here again given the chance but hopefully they would already have a generator in case the need arises.

This is a horrid hotel to stay. Down a muddy path is the only way in with a pond looking thing over looked by the balcony. You can see rats running all over the place. The staff are rude and 1 is gay. I have no problems with gay people but he stares you up and down looking at your private parts. I asked my girl to witness this to see if it was just me but nope she agredd 100 per cent. The owner a youngish filipino girl would visit often and asking her about dripping and cold showers she said I can always find another hotel if I was not happy. I know some hotels are given bad reviews but this one is just shocking. The toilet is locared so close to the shower you cant swing a cat in there. Tiles a badly stained with black mould. I went out to eat to return to see the maid had fallen aslepp on my bed. I stayed all over the philippines from Davao to bohol, palawan cebu and boracay but this by far is the very worse. Do not stay here.

I stayed on this hotel 2014 as this was the only one available. The hotel is located down a muddy track road so clean shoes is not a good idea. There are 2 ways into the hotel but both have muddy paths. Breakfast is edible but I didnt know what I was eating so I declined and went to mcdo. Furniture is basic and at the gate way is a large house with daily karaoke music. Never again I stay here.

Response from GloretoGuestHouse, Manager at Gloreto Guest House
Responded Apr 17, 2015
Thank you for your comment Sir! We actually have 3 branches in Butuan and the one you stayed in is only muddy during rainy season. It is a barangay road and the management already requested to have it cemented. As to the complimentary breakfast we have lots of choices and we apologize if it did not meet your standard. The big house near the stablishment is not a karaoke house. It just so happen that there's a party going on during that time. Again, we apologize for everything.

There was a gay staff here who was very rude to us. When we arrived, he was already raising his voice telling us that he was calling us 20 times already and we were not answering, thus he gave our room to another group. When my friend checked her phone, the staff only called 20 minutes before we arrived. She missed to answer the call because we just got out of the bus and we were carrying our luggage and other stuffs. It was ok if he did not raise his voice to us, but we were really offended, and instead looked for another place.

We ended up staying in Wayfarer Hotel ( a couple of blocks from Gloretto), which looked much new. And the staff were nice.

Just last week, we booked a dormitory room at Gloreto and they said that no deposit/ reservation fee is needed. When we arrived at the guest house, even before we asked if we could already check, one of the staff said that they already cancelled our reservation since we did not answer their calls. We were very tired at that point coming from a couple of hours of travel, the least that the staff could do was offer us other rooms or other branches of their guest house where we could stay. Saying that it is our fault that our reservation got cancelled is definitely not what we expected!!!

I stayed in one of their suite rooms for a week as everything was booked out. The room was large, with a nice lounge area and the decor was nice. The rooms arent luxurious, but are well appointed and everything works.
The staff are friendly and the breakfast is nice.

In our previous review we mentioned the absense of any generator, true to their word we stayed again during June 2012 and observed a generator in their car park ... credit given to where credit is due :)

Although not so often we'll happily stay here each and every time we may happen to be on business in Butuan.

Just one "ask" ... When staying at such an establishment as Gloreto, and without in-house dining/dinner facilities, it's a problem where to find international standard cafes/restaurants in Butuan ... Please post any recommendations of where to eat here please ... Thank you.

"Our 2nd floor room is the one nearest to the street hence quite noisy. But, the perk is the WIFI reaches the room w/o one going down the lobby and the signal strength is pretty good in this place."
