Butuan has a pretty poor selection of hotels. If you are looking for a pool there are only three choices. Almont Inland Resort (a bit overpriced), Dotties Place (some issues) and the much less well known Balanghai. Sadly when we came here (Jan 2016) the pool was being cleaned / renovated. It's supposed to reopen in Feb 2016.

If and when they get the pool reopened it would be a reasonable option for those looking for a place with a pool in Butuan. The pool is large and deep (Dotties is medium sized and shallow - basically for splashing around. Apart from the pool the rooms are acceptable for the price. Reasonably comfortable bed and working AC. Its a combination hotel and museum so kind of unusual. A bit dingy from so,me perspectives but "interesting from others. The Breakfast is acceptable , nothing to write home about but OK. Its near the City haul about 10 mins trike away from the main drags o feels a bit out of the way however there are a couple of restaurants within walking distance. The gardens are an interesting place for a photoshoot but they have not used them to their potential lacking places to sit around etc.Overall a 3 but would have been a 4 and pretty good value had the pool been operational.

The rooms are supposed to have wifi but we never ot this to work and had to rely on our own pocket wifi

We had no choice but to stay since we got stranded in Surigao and this was recommended to us.

- Fast wifi connection even when it was raining thoughout the night.
- Big cabled TV
- 2 complimentary bottled water
- Food at the restaurant was OK but not great.
- Their mini museum had interesting artifacts.
- The woman at the front desk was good and so were the chambermaids.
- The A/C was working.
- It's PHP1500 ($35)/ night.

Dislikes:
- The dark color of the interior in the hallway was creepy.
- No hot and cold shower in our bathroom.
- They ran out of beer.

I booked a deluxe room with two single beds and got an extra bed for myself. I find the room a bit small for 3 persons, but reasonable for 2. Toilet facilities are ok, but when I checked in everything was wet, including the mirrors and the electrical socket. Staff were very accommodating, from the front desk to the restaurant and the pool. Wide parking area, and the hotel can be a bit busy due to various functions.

The hotel was venue to a number of activities when we stayed there. Since all the function rooms were full, we had trouble hearing each other. The function rooms were not sound proof. We were billeted in the new rooms. The room was okay with available basic amenities. Unfortunately, the bathroom drain was emitting a nasty smell. The food was also okay. The hotel staff were really friendly and helpful.

There is so much history in this establishment, however, I suggest that they put captions to understand the significance of the items well (specially for those who doesn't know the history of the place or the Philippines).
The exterior and lobbies are classy and vintage but the rooms are too small and dim. The floors squeak, giving you the feeling that you're walking inside an old house.
The pool is deep enough for swimmers to love. Kids will also enjoy swimming because in case the kiddie pool doesn't have water, the regular pool has a barricade to prevent the children from going to the deeper part of the pool.
Overall, I still think this is the best place to stay when in Butuan. The place itself is a tourist destination, plus, it's close to the National Museum in Butuan City.

When you arrive at midnight and look up at the facade of this dimly lighted hotel, your first thought is to back off. At least I almost did, but facing the friendly night receptionist at the front desk made things easier. I climbed up the circular stairs which reminded me of my grandmother's old house in the province.

On the second floor, stark gloomy characters on paintings stare down at you as you walk through a dimly lit, narrow passage. Wait a minute, it was a huge abstract painting that covered the whole wall. But from my camera, I captured faces. Fun!

My room was comfortably big as I shared a twin bed with a fellow photographer. The TV's remote wasn't working so housekeeping came up with two units to test which one works. Wifi connectivity was not so smooth at that time. I needed to work on my laptop and insomnia, but connection was slow.

Breakfast wasn't memorable in the resto. The lobby had an interesting gallery of artifacts dug from the owner's properties. Encased in glass, these ancient items were proof of Butuan's once flourishing kingdom, and as one of the oldest civilized settlements in the Philippines. It was also the center of trade and commerce in the 11th century, and one of the richest.

Let me talk about the driftwoods. The owner's reported fascination for this collection of driftwoods was on display, with figures ranging from amusing to the grotesque -shaped pieces of barks. You can't avoid them in the lobby.

Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center is an okay place to stay, but it is not as modern and upgraded as other new hotels in Butuan. Reputed to serve satisfactory banquet accommodations for several years now, it thrives on its distinct character, and you will feel it as soon as you step inside its museum-like lobby.

What do I like about staying there? The staff is friendly.

What don't I like about it? You mean besides finding an old vintage hair clip designed from a capiz shell and used by women during the Japanese occupation, and which my roommate presumed it left by a chambermaid on my window sill? Oh please. The bathroom with dark tiles and dark curtains, of course.

Some very interesting history there. Rooms are nothing fancy, but clean and well kept. In a nice part of town. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff. Pretty nice garden behind hotel. Great place for an evening stroll. It's not a 4 star hotel, but staying there was comfortable and friendly.

This hotel has a nice place where you can see the rich culture of Butuan City but the place in not well maintained. The rooms are comfortable but it smells rotten logs. For the food, I don't like it at all. For the basic breakfast they charge you so much that you will leave scratching your head.

This was my first trip to Butuan and not sure which hotel to book so my friend recommend me to try Balanghai since this hotel has some nice history. The hotel is easy to find and located near City Hall. It is quite near to Gaisano Mall. Transportation is either by Jeepney or Tricycle. The fare is only 8 peso for a ride which is reasonable cheap. The only trouble is that foreigner like me may need to ask which jeepney to take otherwise you may ride to an unknown destination. The room is simple and nothing to shout about. There is a free wifi but the signal strength is weak when more users are using the wifi. However they a nice swimming pool and a big garden. The hotel is quite popular for seminar or convention. Overall a nice experience.
