This was our 11th visit to this resort, my 24th to the area. We keep coming back because of the staff. The grounds are beautiful, the activities are diverse, the food is awesome, but the staff is absolutely stellar. We even had friends meet us there this year. Already booked for 2021! Don’t believe any negative reviews. We are very particular, and look for a high-end experience; the Barcelo definitely delivers. Shout out to Angelica at the pool. She’s amazing!

Hotel's Favorite
We took a chance and came here with our two teenagers for spring break. My husband and I had been vaccinated for Covid but our kids had not so safety was a concern for us. I can tell you that they take safety very seriously here and all the staff did such a good job keeping the resort clean and safe. They all wore masks and some also with visors over the masks. There was no issue distancing in the pools or on the beach because the resort is massive! They also had really good spacing between tables at the restaurants. The food and drinks were really good! I honestly do not understand the negative reviews. Just make sure to order the top shelf liquors by name otherwise they will give you the budget stuff by default which isn’t any good. We had no issues getting restaurant reservations and the food and service at the al la cartes was top notch! We had a couple over cooked steaks the first night but after that we learned to be more specific (order rare-medium rare if you want medium rare) they do default to overcooking. Once we figured out how to order we had some really amazing meals! And surprisingly the house wine is totally decent! The pool is massive and was so warm when we were there in April. It was our favorite just to chill in the pool and order delicious drinks from the bar. We have stayed in Akumal in the past so we weren’t super impressed with the snorkeling on site. I think we have just been spoiled by better spots but you can see turtles here. Yes there was stuff closed. We would have liked to check out the big mall, gym, and spa but we also enjoyed the low occupancy. I’m not sure we would have enjoyed it being totally packed to capacity. That is just us. We did do the surf rider and mini golf that was really fun. I can’t speak more highly of the service which was just amazing at every bar and every restaurant. Even just sitting by the pool someone is always ready to offer you a drink. We only went to one show at the Colonial but the acoustics at that theater aren’t great. The singers and dancers were really good so it was a disappointment that we couldn’t hear them better. Covid testing was a breeze to return home and we all stayed healthy. No tummy issues either. I wish the anti maskers we had on the return flight had as much concern for our safety as they did at the Barcelo. Honestly we were treated like royalty there. Thanks for the great stay!!! I can’t wait to come back!!!

Trip report- the good, the bad, and the truth. Let me preface by saying that we have been long time Barcelo fans. We've been coming to Barcelo resorts since 2009- and have been to Barcelo Maya Palace 6 times, and Barcelo Bavaro in DR 2 times. I don't know if we will go back after this year's experience. The good: The grounds were beautiful as always! Workers work so hard to keep everything maintained and pristine. The waiters at the buffet & the ala carts were very kind & fun! There's always lots to see & do. The night time shows were really good- we especially enjoyed Broadway! The bad: The atmosphere or vibe was different. Of course there were lots of nice people... but a few can ruin it for all - let me explain. We witnessed multiple arguments- people cussing & screaming. My daughter heard screaming for help one night and walked out the door to see what was happening and a woman covered in blood ran to her for help being chased by her husband/boyfriend. Blood was everywhere- floor, walls.... Security & medical came to assist after about 45 minutes. 3 days later we still had blood on the walls outside our door. Another day a guy in our group accidentally elbowed someone at the swim up bar (it happens- it's crowded)... the next morning that girl's entire family surrounded our table at breakfast all bowed up confronting our friend. He apologized & told her he wasn't even aware he had done it and she said rudely replied YOU APOLOGIZE NOW BUT WHERE WAS MY APOLOGY YESTERDAY. These people were ready for a fight 😳. We were pool view premium, ground floor- people were in the pool screaming, cussing and partying till midnight multiple nights. Hard to sleep with the yelling going on. Our friends were on the second floor- their neighbors partied till 4 am screaming, slamming doors, and yelling in the middle courtyard. There was blood on the floor (a lot) the next morning in the walkway- and it stayed their for 2 days. Another day- blood in the elevator. At the swim up bar the bartenders were not friendly- at all. And before you ask- yes we tipped. They normally smile, laugh and make friends with you... not this year- not at all. We also tried to book our reservations for dinner the day we got there and we're only able to get 2- neither were the ones we hoped for. Never had this problem before. Reservations aren't a deal breaker- but the fighting and nonsense are. Upon checkout we told our lady that checked us out in the premium lounge. We let her know we weren't upset with her but wanted to let her know because we are repeat guests but if this is the new way at Barcelo we would not be back. She said she & management were aware of the problem - they see it too. She said that 2 other resorts in the area are still closed due to Covid and they are sending their guests to Barcelo- and they are a different type of clientele. She said another family the day before were also repeat guests and told her they would not return if things didn't change. She said they had a wedding there the previous week- that was booked at one of the other resorts, but due to closure got moved to Barcelo- and they had fighting, breaking things, and a big mess. She said the workers see it and are not happy about it either- you can tell- big time. I hope this review gets to management. Barcelo is so beautiful & special- it's a real shame this is being allowed to happen. This is not the Barcelo we know & love.

Ok, let’s start with the bad: 1. Our A/C was faulty from the moment we arrived- it was making a very loud rumbling noise. We called the front desk and they said they would fix it. We came back from the beach that day and the foyer floor had a lot of mess on it, uncleaned. The noise was worse, we called the front desk again. The girl that we talked to sounded so annoyed with us, and we were extremely polite. This was sad. She told us to wait in the room so that we could explain to the maintenance guy what the problem was. The guy showed up and had 0 English- from understanding to speaking. Then he called another dept and was making fun of, not realizing that I can understand a lot of Spanish. He didn’t fix it either, even through the sound became lower. 2 days before the departure the sound became louder than ever before and the vent cover started falling out (photo attached). There was no point calling the front desk and spending all of our vacation time fixing the room. But our sleep at night was horrible, we barely got any rest during our week’s stay. 2. The hair dryer at our arrival was covered in a sticky stuff, completely disgusting (photo attached). We called the front desk, then sent somebody over. The person who showed up tried to clean it and made it worse. But the motor was completely clogged, sparking when turned on. So I called again and then the next day they replaced the hair dryer. 3. We’re not picky travelers, but since I’m pointing all of this out, let me also add why this is not a 5-star resort: all of our ceiling lamps had a triple layer of dust and dead bugs and mosquitoes. I cleaned them out myself. One of sinks was clogged, so we barely used it. Under the sinks we found pills and a lot of blue foam. I cleaned it out too. The seal on the toilet door was falling off and was dangling when we arrived. The light on the balcony was sparking when we tried turning it on, so we just never used it. And we had a lizard in our room, that I caught myself and released into the nature. 4. Buffet food was very so-so, some ingredients not fresh at all. Definitely not a 5-star food. And there was NO Mexican food anywhere, except for the Mexican restaurant at Adults-Only, but we couldn’t go there. On top of that, it was booked 1 week ahead, so we wouldn’t be able to go there anyway. We came back home to the US and ordered Mexican food for 3 days in a row. 5. As we arrived, the front desk and guest services told us that ALL a la carte restaurants required formal dress code, where men had to cover their legs with slacks. (If you arrive there, check the signs all over the place). However, when we arrived in several restaurants, we saw people wearing t-shirts, jeans, sport crop tops, caps. And 15 yo teenage guys wore shorts and flip flops. And somehow it was ok. Also, the rules state that kids under 10 yo are only allowed in a la carte only before 7.30 pm. But we saw families walking in at 9 pm with infants. So, their rules are murky and they don’t follow them. 6. Please note that it’s hard to book a la carte restaurants, because the availability is low. We were only able to get into our first restaurant on the 4th day. One time, when we needed to print out our COVID test results, we were waiting for a newly checked in group to finish reservations (a group of 8), and they were in Premium Level and couldn’t get any reservation for all of them until day 3, and their group had to be split in 2 groups of 4 and spread through a bunch of restaurants through out the entire Grand resort. They were not happy. 7. Their Guest Services are open only till 5 pm (COVID hours), but there are no signs posted anywhere about the new hours. The main guest services office is located behind the front desk and the staff kept sending people after hours and they were turned away, as they just checked in. 8. If you want to print smth, please note that it takes forever: you need to go to the Guest Services of the main lobby, email your docs to their email that they will provide to you, and then they have to go to the front desk to get the print out, We were waiting for 1 hr to print out our Covid tests, waiting in line. 9. Wi-Fi is very slow, even though worked without interruptions. 10. IMPORTANT: if you’re flying back to the US, you will need a negative covid test, antigen is fine and faster. Book your appt. as soon as you arrive. You will need to go to the 1st ground floor- there is separate room across the ATM machine. To make an appt you don’t need your passport, but at the time of the test you DO. It took us 1 hr sitting in line to make an appt. Do you test 2 days before, not 3- in case your flight gets delayed. Our appt was at 6 pm. The clinic that Barcelo is partnering with ASSURED us that the results would be emailed by 10pm-12am same day. We were stupidly up till 1 am, then passed out. The results came at 8 am next morning. So please don’t expect the same-day results. Antigen costs $30USD/ person. 11. Rodizio A la carte restaurant had a buffet in the middle of it for salads and appetizers, so that was weird. I have never seen a buffet in such a restaurant. The Good: 1. Barcelo, as many indicate- truly has the most beautiful grounds. It’s really a heavenly paradise. Lucious gardens, a LOT of blooming flowers and bushes, amazing palm trees. Superb pools, amazing cabanas…. Just phenomenal! 2. We had a couple of days of a lot of seaweed on the beach. They were cleaning it out day and night. Not all resorts do that 3. We had an amazing time snorkeling with giant sea turtles, saw sting rays, manta rays, gorgeous tropical fish, coral reefs….. Make SURE you bring water shoes, believe me- you won’t be able to snorkel without them. Also, the reef ‘hides’ sea urchins, so please please be careful and do wear water shoes. Not all the beach is rocky/reefy, but it’s good to know. Also, wear rash guard long-sleeve shirts, as once you’ll see all that under-water beauty, next thing you know- an hour passed and you’ll be sunburned. We saw people in pain telling us “Man, I wish I had your shirts”. Maybe you’ll be able to find long sleeved ones in their stores, but we haven’t seen any. So be prepared ahead of time. 4. Their beaches are very clean, garbage regularly picked up, along with towels. 5. Barcelo offers a full spectrum of tours and water activities. We booked a tour to Chichen Itza. That tour also included a visit at the Mayan village. Make sure you bring cash and singles, as along the way they make stops at the bathrooms at random gas stations where they charge $1.00USD for 2 people. O_O At the mayan village, they have a lot of very cool and unique souvenirs, cash is preferable as otherwise they have to pay taxes, even though they are ‘natives’. They will also give you better deals if you pay with cash. At that village they have a Cenote cave, BRING TOWELS to swim and water shoes. The tour was great, it was a long day, but it was a lot of fun. Also, souvenirs are cheaper at Chichen Itza. 6. Barcelo has a double-decker open roof bus going around the entire Grand resort every 15 minutes. Great and convenient ride! You can see the entire property and you will be amazed by the beauty of the entire property. Just to let you know- our of all properties, Barcelo Maya palace is truly the best-looking. Tropical, Caribe, Beach, Colonial- are nice-looking too and still in the same ‘theme’- Mexican and Caribbean. Riviera (Adults Only)- is the one out of the theme- it looks like a giant hospital, white and gray walls, no art anywhere and it’s very isolated from the rest. So yeah, we made the right choice by staying at the Palace. 7. Entertainment is at the highest level: pool sports, dancing classes, dancing exercises, water parks for kids, evening shows, free scuba diving lessons at the pool- they have smth for everybody! 8. They have endless hidden trails to various small Cenotes (water holes) and walking around that tropical garden is so beautiful! 9. Brasserie (French Restaurant) was exceptional, just beyond delicious food and service! Coral Grill breakfast buffet had the best breakfast food out of all the buffets! 10. When you check in at the place, they attach a bracelet on you with a small oval card- to identify that you’re staying at the Palace AND it is your keycard to your room! That was SOOOOOO convenient, I can’t even tell you! We didn’t loose it and it didn’t break. 11. Overall, the staff at the resort was very friendly, polite and nice. Sometimes there is a slight break in communication, but that’s ok- it’s a foreign country with different mentality, and they all are generally trying to go above and beyond. We felt like there is a lack of general management, like there is nobody even following up to see if your requests have been complete/if stuff was working as expected. We saw a couple of managers walking around in the lobby, we tried to talk to them, but they ran away from us. wow… Just so you know- we’re not picky travelers, and we often close our eyes on things, but when you literally can’t close your eyes to sleep because of super noisy A/C, I can’t not tell about it. Overall, this resort can be true 5 stars. Maybe 3.5. Would we recommend it? It’s hard to say as the outdoors activities were fabulous, the room and food- not so much. We had a good time as this was our first International travel after COVID, so I was happy in the end. If you are traveling with kids- you may find it perfect for you. If you’re expecting a true 5-star luxury ‘treat’ - it’s is NOT for you. Will we come back? Hmmm… Maybe… But we’ll try to explore other resorts first…
