Excellent first impressions are the chandeliers in reception. Staff were attentive & booking in carried out efficiently. Plenty of choice for food and eating places. Immaculately kept grounds with access to long sandy beach & palm trees.

Hotel's Favorite
We have never been disappointed in any Riu Palace we've stayed and the Mexico is no different! We arrived in the evening (I HAD TO check out of the Riu Yucatan - it wasn't good at all - you can read that review) and I wanted to go to any of the Riu Palace resorts in the area, and the Mexico was available. The hotel is beautiful. We met some wonderful people there, our favorite was Alejandra, who worked activities, who we met while watching the show on our first night and we chatted with her every time we saw her for the week we were there! She was so sweet! We had fun chatting with Israel, who we met by the pool and he had only been working there a week! The pool bar had some wonderful bartenders, Ermilo, Luis and Rosa made our drinks and were great to chat with! Joe had everyone busy with pool aerobics and German was amazing as our pool waiter! The shows (evening entertainment) were also very good. The beach is normally gorgeous in this area but unfortunately there was a ton of seaweed in Playa del Carmen so the hotel had no control over that (but definitely unswimmable). The pools were great. The grounds were kept beautiful, and the food was very good with lots of variety. You also get top shelf liquor at Riu Palace resorts which is always nice! The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking for a great experience. It also solidified that we will, from now on, only stay at Palaces when choosing Riu!

Had a nice break here in January, although the weather mixed, the room was huge, the service could not be faulted at all, and the food a high standard. The hotel isn't small so obviously doesn't have a boutique feel but has recently had a refurbishment so everything is in order and it sits on a huge plot so everything feels spreadout. One thing is for sure I have discovered that Americans know how to party too!

This was our 3rd time staying in playa del Carmen area and we found a great deal for Riu so decided to try it out but should have stuck with our usual hotel. Never again. The Riu palace Mexico has a ton of potential ruined by quite a few too many issues: Pros: - the food is really good and there are 6 restaurants to chose from at night. Service is great and no reservations are needed. - the hotel staff goes above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. Cons: - drug dealers walk around the beach and up to the stairs to the pool area to sell all types of drugs - nobody at the hotel cares and it gets really tiring for a family resort. - noise: the hotel is really loud (at night till 12-1am because of loud music) and in general there’s a huge echo in the hallways where the rooms are. Rooms are poorly insulated and if someone walks in the hallway you hear it really loudly. Housekeeping starts knocking at doors at 8am which given poor insulation will wake you up. - decor is just poor, very gaudy and tacky. Room really lacked of any coziness. Same for restaurants decor. - strict about mask wearing when ordering a drink at the bar (outside!) but not enforcing it at the gym and spa - Jacuzzi in the spa was cold - music at the pool is extremely loud from 10am, forget taking a nap. All the pools are next to each other so you can escape. - some questionable people engaging in pretty explicit acts at the breakfast table and in the pool. Not very family friendly.
