Nestled in a prime location, Banyan Tree Mayakoba earns rave reviews for its lush amenities, such as villas with private pools, and its exceptional service that guests find warm and attentive. The breathtaking atmosphere, complemented by vibrant activities and a stunning natural environment, is frequently highlighted by guests. While some travelers note the rooms could use an update, the cleanliness and luxurious touches are consistently praised. However, opinions on value are mixed, with some deeming the food and amenities overpriced, despite the overall experience.

Just returned from 4 nights at Banyan tree for my 10 year anniversary. My husband and I aren’t sure why there are any negative reviews at all about this place, we absolutely loved it. The grounds are beautiful and vast, the service impeccable and kind and the food and drinks absolutely delicious!

We stayed in the Oceanfront Veranda Suite - highly recommend. Having the ocean view and breeze was SO nice. They offered us an upgrade to the Lanai version that spilled right out onto the beach, but we preferred the second floor version for the privacy it offered. It had a large veranda with pool, beautiful woodwork and high ceiling, comfortable large bed, steam shower, outdoor shower and hot tub. It was truly part of the experience and so nice to hang in. It was also right on a private beach area and 2 minute walk to Sands and the main pool on the beach.

The grounds themselves are massive including 3 other resorts. We ran and biked a ton and still didn’t see all of it. So fun to explore and easy to get golf carts anywhere. The scenery was lush and beautiful.

Was the food/drinks expensive? Yes. But so is any resort or hotel it seems but in this case, the quality matched. We had unreal meals and the margs (which we are snobs about) were SO good, fresh and creative. Two unique ones I recall were black pepper and honey Marg and also Tamarind-chili basil passionfruit marg. Unreal!

At Banyan we had breakfast included with our package and found both the buffet at Oriente and A la Carte at Sands to be some of the best breakfast we’ve ever had! For dinner we went to Saffron (Thai), Cello (Italian) and La Copa (Mexican) and loved them all. We also ventured to Rosewood to Aqui mi Quedo for lunch (picturesque and delish) and Zapote bar (must visit - most of a ‘vibe’ in Mayakoba). Easy to get golf carts to anywhere on property!

The service was so impressive. everyone we encountered was kind and eager to help. No one shy’d away from any question or issue. You are given private concierges who are constantly in contact via WhatsApp and approach in person whenever they see you to check on everything and offer whatever you need. Shout out to Sonia and Gaby who we loved.

Also want to shout out Gilberto from the main pool - he was our guy.

Lastly highly recommend the airport transfer from the hotel (also included with our reservation package). The instructions sent to us prior were so professional and helpful with the process, the drivers so kind, cars so nice and we were provided info, comfort, food and drinks.

Don’t hesitate to go here! Even in the lower season it was amazing. Great for couples or groups. Loved it!

Wow...we had the most amazing week at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. The resort was recommended by someone, and he said it was the best resort he'd ever visited. We have to agree, it's just perfect in every way. We are not fans of all inclusives, and the fact that Banyan Tree isn't one was a positive from the outset. Being part of a private, gated community (with great security), where you have access to all four resorts' restaurants and amenities, just sealed the deal for us. We stayed in a Beachfront Lanai room, and we loved every part of it. The beach is quiet, with each suite having their own dedicated loungers. Each has its own private pool, as well as an outdoor shower and hot tub. Being on the ground floor, we had a large outdoor living area as well, with a large sectional and table and chairs. The rest of the resort is beautiful as well, with jungle and lagoon view rooms. Each unit is provided with bikes, which makes it really easy to get around the community. In the evenings we took golf carts to the various restaurants and other resorts. Their pickups were always exactly on time, and the drivers were great. Every single employee we interacted with went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and provided for (shout out to Edwin, our wonderful beach server, and Laura, our concierge!).

I could go on and on. The food is amazing, the activities were wonderful, and the weather was perfect. We are planning on a ten day stay next winter and can't wait. Banyan Tree, you've really raised the bar on Mexican resorts!

Absolutely top tier experience in all areas. Beautiful property, welcoming and attentive staff in every position.

For example, we were walking on the side walk and the irrigation sprinkler was spraying partly on our path. A grounds keeper ran over and blocked it with his hand so we could continue without getting wet. That deserves a big WOW.

The food was good, the beach was lovely. multiple private pools and pool bar. Diamante at the pool bar was great and should be a certified mixologist as he created some impressive unique drinks for us.

The villa was both spacious and private. The serenity villa had a living room that was detached and worked well for us when we were trying to squeeze in some work.

The gym was well equiped with free weights, plenty of cardio equipment and some space for functional training. I should have taken pics to post as I could not find good pics prior to booking.

Most important mention goes to Juan and Rene our resort hosts. They made everything better. We were contacted or visited frequently everyday to make sure we had what we needed, coordinated transport, reservations etc. Juan even thought to do things to make a boat dinner extra special that I should have thought about but neglected.

We visited the other properties in Mayakoba for dinner but I can’t imagine the experience to be any better than at Banyan tree because of Juan and Rene.

The Banyan Tree Hotel and Resort near Playa del Carmen is a five-star property located about 45 minutes from the main airport. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and taken by boat across the scenic Mayakoba River to the check-in area. We were offered a room upgrade, which we appreciated. However, during our stay, we noticed several areas where maintenance and improvements were needed.

For example, the light switches in the restroom didn’t function properly, and many of the outdoor light bulbs were out, including the LED lights above the bed. While I understand that proximity to the ocean can cause wear and tear due to saltwater exposure, I believe that management, especially the concierge team, should ensure that rooms are thoroughly inspected before guests are allowed in.

On a positive note, the dining options were excellent, and there’s convenient access to nearby resorts with the option for room delivery (with a small fee). However, from a management perspective, I noticed a recurring issue with staff members frequently being on their phones. I recognize that this may be for communication purposes to keep staff informed of activities around the resort, but I would recommend a more discreet approach. For instance, hosts standing at the front of a restaurant should avoid being visibly on their phones, as it can come across as unprofessional, especially in a four- or five-star environment. A discussion between management and staff on maintaining a professional presence in front of guests would be beneficial.

Lastly, when I shared my feedback regarding these areas for improvement, the management responded promptly with some thoughtful service recovery measures, which I appreciated.

Banyon tree Myakoba is the nicest property I've ever seen. The villas and suites are surrounded by perfectly immaculate grounds and waterways. We stayed in an oceanfront ( top floor) suite with plunge pool, jacuzzi, stream
shower and sprawling bathroom. I prefer the oceanfront to beachfront. Though you have to walk upstairs to the room, the view when the shades open, is all ocean and therefore more private than beachfront ( where you are literally able to walk from your room on to the beach.)
You transit the property by bikes (right out front & assigned to your room) or golf carts. So much fun and beautiful rides. There is more to do here than meets the eye( complimentary) eco boat tour, snorkeling,2 glorious pools) nature walk, yoga, spa, tennis, archery)
The service is first rate! Everyone there ready to meet your needs. The beach is cleaned all morning to get rid of any sea weed or other debris. Water was clear, light green and warm. The beachfront pool at the sands is very warm, reflections pool is a bit cooler.
Food: yes it is expensive but given the size the breakfast ( included in our package) you can skip lunch or have a small snack and then you are really just paying for dinners. We loved Saffron, great atmosphere, Sands, perfect fish and we ate 2x at La Copa ( less expensive) but wonderful dishes. Chicken with mole as fabulous . We had one lunch at the shack on the beach with the executive Chef (Alfonso) and it was splendid.
All the staff were simply amazing! Special mention and thanks to our concierge Laura ( that's for what you did) and Sonia, Marco at the Oriente breakfast, Victor and Francesco at the Sands beach.
By the way, the breakfast buffet - you must go at least once! If you are not a buffet person you can order a La carte there as well or try the quieter breakfast at the Sands Beach club.
I always like to try new places but this was so spectacular, I can see returning. Not sure any place could surpass Banyan Tree Myakoba!
Thank you!
PS we had 5 days of glorious weather!

This is an amazing resort. We had a Beachfront Terrace Pool Suite, so we were right on the beach, with a large patio with plenty of comfortable furniture as well as our own small pool. Each day the staff would set up our beach chairs on the sand just outside our room, with towels, umbrella, and bottled water. The bathroom was quite large, with a jacuzzi tub and shower outside it. It was a very comfortable room, and we ordered room service a few times and sat outside enjoying the view. The staff was genuinely nice and very warm and helpful. We called for a ride to the main lobby many times and never had trouble getting one in a timely manner. The resort did not feel crowded, and I don't know if it was a slow week (just after New Years) or if it always feels that way. We enjoyed hanging out on our patio or the beach so much and found it so relaxing that we didn't do much else. The Mayan dinner was quite good, and it's a small group of people around one large round table, so that felt special. The Thai restaurant was OK. Do be prepared for very high prices everywhere. We went into town a few times for lunch and to walk around and enjoyed doing that and felt very safe. There are many restaurant options in town, which gave us a break from the same resort food over and over. Just a few things that could be improved - they are great about giving you plenty of bottled water (in glass bottles, which I assume they sterilize and refill), but it would be great if they gave you a reusable, sealable water bottle and had places all over the resort where you could refill it with filtered water. I would also very much like to have more casual options for meals and snacks - there was no place to get just a muffin and coffee for breakfast or an afternoon snack like a smoothie. Also, we could have been given more info about the resort and the area. This is a common problem I'm finding at all hotels - they took all of the printed info out of the rooms during COVID and never put it back, nor are they good at telling you (at check in) where to get info. All in all, we really enjoyed our vacation and would definitely go back, especially if we could get a beachfront room again.

Our beachfront suite with private pool was divine. The room had stellar views, and we appreciated having our own beach set up and not having to rush in the morning to save spots at the beach and/or pool. Housekeeping typically came late in the afternoon (eg, around 2:30pm/3pm) which was a bit late for practical purposes, but wasn't fatal. We experienced amazing, incomparable service at the resort, particularly from Marcos, Monica and Gena. They were in constant communication as to whether we were having an enjoyable visit at the resort, and whether anything could be done to enhance our experience. Further, the gentlemen who drove the golf carts to and fro (24-hour service) were always friendly and patient and never made coming to collect us (even when we ventured off property to the Andaz and Fairmont for dinner) seem like a bother. For the price(s), the food options were below expectations. We chose a non-all inclusive in hopes to have better food options, but that wasn't the case here. The beachfront offerings were tasty, and the buffet breakfast was comprehensive, but the quality of the food at dinner was a bit lacking. If you are able, it's worth it to try Tauro Steakhouse at the Fairmont which is also on the Mayakoba compound grounds (you can get a golf cart lift to the resort) as the food there was exceedingly good and the bill is charged to your Banyan Tree account as the resorts have a reciprocal arrangement. Although we did not play ourselves, the golf course is impressive looking. The private airport shuttle service was easy to book as was the private day excursion to Chichen Itza (2 hours drive each way, with a private tour guide). The spa services are extortionately priced. I did "enjoy" a 90-minute massage, but the experience wasn't worth it for what turned out to be USD $620 (including grats) bill. Lastly, there are jellyfish in the ocean and we each suffered stings. Overall, not a big deal, but the initial reaction to us inquiring about the prevalence of jellyfish in the water was "there are no jellyfish). Not sure why this (e.g., denial) was the chosen response, but Roman (the lifeguard/first aid responder) was brilliant and treated the stings efficiently and expertly. Oh, and book the eco tour around the lagoon as it's a great way to see the other Mayakoba properties, along with wildlife, in their "natural habitat".

The highlight of the trip was the beautiful pool set on the picturesque beach. We spent most every day, all day there and the kids club was smartly located nearby. My 5 and 7 year old loved the kids club and not for what it offered but because of who worked there. Maggie and Narni are amazing! I told Maggie I wish I could bring her home with me. Three things prevented this from being 5 stars. Our 3 bedroom villa was a far distance from the beach. Your methods to getting there are either bike or golf cart. At popular times you have to wait 10/15 minutes for a cart so we found the bike fastest and a scenic ride however with a 3 year old there was no way for him to join us biking (no trailers or toddler seats) so we’d split up. Second is the price of some of the meals. The Mexican night was $175 per adult. I had chips/guac, 3 tacos and a churro with no margaritas. It was great fun, a piñata for the kids and a mariachi band however still pricey for the food. The Tomahawk steakhouse is also pricey however, at least comparatively it’s somewhat worth it. Finally, there are only 5 beds next to the pool at the beach and people would head down early to save them. The frustrating part is some people would save them and never use the pool, but there were no other places near the pool to sit. As someone with kids we’d get a chair on the beach but spend our whole time in the pool.

While our first visit to Banyan Tree was certainly memorable, I would say there were some hiccups that made it less than exceptional. Upon check in I would have appreciated a more in depth introduction to the resort. We were given a paper map and sent a link to the website. If you’re in the villas, prepare for a 25 minute walk/15 minute bike ride to the beach. However, golf carts are constantly taxing people all over the resort. We learned that it was Mexican Night, which only happens twice a week, but it was fully booked. Many of the restaurant reservations fill up quickly, so I’d advise pre arranging these, as well as the boat tour, ahead of your trip.

Our room was not equipped with some of the amenities I had requested in advance; two kids’ bikes and a roll away bed and it only had towels for two people, not four. However, after informing Juan, our concierge, the issue was quickly rectified.

The timing of housekeeping was rather disappointing. At four o clock on our first full day they had not yet shown up and I had to call to request it. It must be the norm because most days they arrived in the late afternoon, which unfortunately for us, is when we return from the beach for some “quiet time” for our kids. Upon their last visit they did not leave any water or milk for coffee so they had to be summoned back. One evening our AC was also malfunctioning and we had to have maintenance come. It was speedily repaired, just another inconvenience to have to deal with for us.

The food is excellent, just get ready to be hit over the head with the prices. $240 for a steak, $200 breakfast buffet for two kids and two adults, etc.

The highlight for my kids was the boat ride. The captain, Jesus, was amazing and a great tour guide. The grounds are breathtaking and we were very impressed with the security and safety measures. We also did not eat at the Haab dinner, but we enjoyed the native Mayan drum circle that happens afterwards and it was awesome.

This is a property you don’t want or need to leave. And I say this as someone who typically does not stay at resorts because I usually like to venture out to options for dining and entertainment beyond where I’m staying. Four nights at this amazing resort and I could have stayed even longer.

From the moment you arrive everyone is so gracious and warm. Paulina and Cristiano were so kind and helpful when we checked-in, and everyone throughout our entire stay was wonderful. Everyone wishes you a good morning or evening, no matter where you encounter them on the property, and is truly so welcoming.

We stayed in the well-being sanctuary and it was massive for two people. Clean, spacious, and kept tidy and well stocked with water and coffee on a daily basis. We had a huge iguana living in one of our trees but he minded his own business and was a delight to see every day. At one point we had an issue with the hot tub losing water and someone came over to fix it as soon as I called, and not only fixed it, but also cleaned the pool for us while they were at it. As part of our room type, healthy snacks were also delivered to our room twice a day. My only suggestion here is to cover the well-being snacks with plastic wrap or something if the guests are not there to immediately enjoy it, as the first snack was usually delivered while we were at the beach club — and then by the time we came back to our room fruit flies were on the fresh cut fruit, which meant we could not eat it. The same happened with one of the spa type amenities they dropped off during turndown service while we were at dinner. They left it in our room and the spa mixture attracted ants, so we had to remove it and put it outside. The ants immediately left with it, so not a huge deal, but something for the hotel to consider.

We loved riding our bikes to the beach club every day and also rode all over the nature trails. Such a fun little path and a lot of different birds along the way. Speaking of the beach club! Wonderful service, very relaxing, and a great amenity to have overall. My husband also tried the paddle boarding and enjoyed it.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat!

The restaurants are all very expensive. We went into town for most meals. We had a rental car, however when you go into town you need local currency to park at their parking meters. The breakfast at Banyan Tree is amazing, it is a huge buffet and an enormous selection.

Banyan Tree is a lovely elegant hotel, however most guests wear casual clothes, and t-shirts and shorts are just as welcome as collared shirts or dresses. It can get very hot so comfort rules.
