The Occidental Cozumel hotel, a unique destination inspired by a Mexican hacienda, gives guests the chance to enjoy the treasures found in the Palancar Reef off the island of Cozumel. It takes just 45 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen to get to this idyllic island in the Mexican Caribbean, and is something that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Everybody was super friendly the room was clean the bed was comfortable I will rate the restaurants one through four the #1 The Royal level restaurant for dinner The food was great the servicer were very attentive we loved it #2 The Corral restaurant for dinner The food was good and the service was good # 3 The Mexican restaurant The food was good the service is very nice but slightly overwhelmed # 4 The Mediterranean restaurant The food is not good the food came out cold the service was terrible if you could avoid this restaurant you should the captain of the restaurant is far from friendly The main pool is a very nice area next to the beach the only complaint I have is that they run out of towels and close the towel station at 5:00 p.m. when the pool closes at 8:00.

Pros- location for water activities less than 15 minutes from Columbia reef and Palancar, about 20 minutes from the southern point. Nobody got sick so the aquifer tap water is probably ok. Cons- Royal Club at Occidental Cozumel is not the same "resort within a resort" experience that you find at Occidental Xcaret. Surly concierge responded to request for more water with "Don't you have enough?" No waitstaff brings drinks to the jacuzzi pool. All dinner restaurants except the buffet require reservations (again, unlike Occidental Xcaret). The "air conditioning" in building 20 appears to be a swamp cooler which doesn't really work when the dew point is around 76F. The coolest we got was 24.5C at 6:00 am. Would suggest looking for "refrigerated air" if you are not accustomed to sleeping in warm, wet conditions. Occidental Cozumel isn't as clean generally as the Occidental Xcaret. The activity pool plastic tables are rinsed in the activities pool. Saw many more coati entering trash cans in Cozumel, but fewer iguana and no sereque. Despite the iguana excrement at Xcaret, they do a much better job keeping their many paths and pools clean. The people cleaning the pools at Xcaret are visible and there are many of them. I saw one person remove the pool vacuum at the "relax" pool after the vacuum sat stationary for half an hour. The vacuums was not robotic - I would hope management appreciates that their accepted level of cleanliness is disappointing. Hotel-hosted beach pics are a gross misrepresentation of the current beach above the water line. The boat traffic starts coming down around 7:00 am, so if you are in the water, there is a lot of wake between then and sundown. Snorkeling in the beach swimming area is pointless. There is no good snorkeling at this hotel, you need to arrange a boat - plus side is there are many private options available and you don't need to go through the hotel travel desk to arrange for pickup at the pier. However, the hotel assesses a $14 USD pier fee for four people for private charters off the pier. $16 taxi ride for four people from this hotel zone to the central zone Mega, $35 taxi to airport four people and four bags. Finally, having walked several miles through town, dinner for four at a local seafood joint where you point at the fish that you want runs $60-70 USD plus tip. Again, nobody got sick. Kudos to Lupe, Felipe, Carlos Mena, and Armando. This hotel is one to which we will not be returning.

The setting is beautiful. The royal level is a must. I would not come back to this resort. The food is ok— drinks at ok- beach is poor- rooms are ok- service is good- scuba at international dive is spectacular but not enough to make up for the resort.

The Che k in area at the Royal level was chaotic. They kept telling about a dozen people “just 10 minutes”. Check in was at 3, but they didn’t get us to a room until 4:30, same for the other 10 people. We found out later that there was a “locals” wedding which filled the resort. Then we also were unable to book dinner reservations for a couple nights due to the wedding party and guests. Then my husband lost his room key bracelet (they tie it on your wrist and it fell off while diving), and yet they charged us $25 for it??. She wanted $50 but compromised on $25, for something that was their fault. No accountability, no concerns for making all of us wait so long after traveling 12 hours to get there. We had to find a manager just to get to a room. Food was good, staff is super nice, our only complaint is about the staff at the Royal checking area.

My husband and I spent 6 days at this resort. Our room was lovely, bed was super comfortable. Cleaning staff were amazing, room always stocked with water and soda. Royal level has its own restaurant. We ate breakfast on the little patio every morning. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice! And the breakfast enchiladas were the best! Staff were always smiling and happy to see us. We absolutely loved the Mexican restaurant. Shoutout to Danny who was an excellent host and who served us the most amazing special coffee at the end of our meal. The chicken mole was the best thing I ate at the resort. My hubby had the filet and he could cut it with his fork. Ambiance at the resort was perfect. Quiet and laid back especially at the Relax pool (adults only). Only issue is I think staff should remove towels that are “reserving” loungers. The entire week we had a group of divers that would reserve their loungers at 6 am and go diving all day. They’d show up at the pool around 1. So for 7 hours no one could use 5 of the 30 loungers at the pool. I watched so many older people come try to lay by that pool and leave due to no seats. I thought that group was incredibly selfish and was left wondering if there was anything staff could do to manage the practice of “reserving” loungers? Other than that, the pool was great for quiet time. Lots of wild life to see there as well. Beach was beautiful. They did suffer some major erosion but there are plenty of loungers and room to enjoy the sand. The buffet both at the main resort and the beach were wonderful. Stocked with traditional Mexican fare as well as burgers, fries and hotdogs. Salad bar, soups, desserts all left you wanting for nothing. Highlight was the ice cream machine with fresh flavors every day! Royal level check in is separate from the main resort. Accommodations are closer to the beach. Staff are awesome! You can make all your dinner reservations with them. Room service is available 24 hours and is included. This came in very handy in checkout day as there is nothing to eat at the airport and you cannot get food at the resort between 1030 and 12 (breakfast/dinner). We were leaving at 12 so we got room service at 11 for our pre-flight lunch. All in all, our trip was amazing, the resort was maxing, the staff were amazing. Would 100% go back!!

Worst All-Inclusive resort we have ever stayed at in over 20 years. Last minute trip but I spent hours researching and this one was rated one of the higher that was still available. Paid extra for the Royal level for two rooms as it was the 6 of us: my husband our three teenagers + a friend. I shudder to imagine what the regular rooms are like, because there was nothing royal or special that we experienced! Check in seemed fine - no line. When we booked, we requested that we would be in the same "tower/building" as our kids. They said "No Problemo". We booked directly with the hotel website. They were in building 20, we were in 18. Not ideal, but our kids are old enough and all cell phones worked. But, when we went to the rooms, it was mixed up and the keys didn't work. Easy fix! Finally, get to our king size bedroom - on the first floor Bldg 18 and it was swampy. As in, mildewy smell, damp sheets, and sticky floors. I've stayed in rural hotels/motels that were nicer. Screen door broken. I had mistakenly ignored a previous negative review that these floor level "Royal" rooms were uncomfortably humid, but disregarded b/c all the other ones were positive. Mistake; that negative reviewer was spot on. Rooms: window was left open, windowsill dirty, tub was stained and very narrow, mirror was rusted, toilet seat didn't fit, had to hold down the handle for a solid 10 seconds to flush and the one hand towel provided was actually ragged! I walked back to Royal Concierge close by to report the problem. They said they would send a dehumidifier and towels. 4 hours later, went back to dark, musty room. No dehumidifier, no rooms available to change until the next day. Next day moved us to BLDG 20; 2 doors down from our kids. Great! We excitedly went to the beach, returned ready for a shower and three hours later, still no suitcase. Two phone calls and two trips to Royal Concierge to ask for the one suitcase. They were not eager or apologetic. The second floor room was better, but still ranks as the worst room I've ever stayed in. The entire property needed a good cleaning and updates! The sheets were so scratchy and pillows lumpy. Again, not expecting the Four Seasons, but it was definitely motel quality. Food: Made reservations immediately at check-in for dinners at restaurants b/c heard buffets were bad. None available first night and the buffet was closed for another hour. We love food and we are not picky eaters. Yet, all the teens had trouble finding dishes, which was never a problem before at other AI resorts/cruises. Waited on the grill service b/c figured fresh grilled meat was better as what was sitting out was unappealing. The fresh grilled beef had a very spongy texture - as in a lot of injectable meat tenderizers I suspect. Every restaurant was mediocre and service was sloooow everywhere including the lunch buffet. I get that it is island time, but we always had to flag someone down for water, coffee, utensils, and even menus at one! La Carreta was the only breakfast restaurant other than a buffet, and it was good and convenient. The Coral restaurant for seafood was blah, 6 people, not one impressive dish. Same meh food at Los Olivos and the International Dinner (at La Carreta). We ordered a variety - nothing was delicious; again we weren't expecting Michelin stars, but we've always found other AI restaurants or most of their dishes impressive for resort food. We had to eat lunch every day at the beach/pool buffet bc nothing else was available. Beware of Coati droppings left on the sidewalk to bask in the sun for 5 days. This was the main sidewalk next to the Royal exit to the beach! When I told the lady about the one in between our rooms, she said "ok, there are wild animals that come". It sat out there for 2 days along with the leftover room service. It probably is still there... Pros: Axel, the towel guy, was nice. He gave us towels even though we did not have a card b/c at check-in she did not offer this or tell us we needed it. The pool drink servers worked hard and were very nice. Bartenders were great too! We kayaked, played pool and beach volleyball. The activities guy did a great job guiding the teams and players of different levels. It was fun! The beach court boundary ropes were tied down with a broken sharp branch. How much can it be to invest in four plastic or metal stakes? I put a plastic cup over them so we wouldn't get impaled if we went for a ball. Fortunately, everyone stayed on the positive side and made do. We spent as much time on the beach and pool. The resort has a very worn vibe. No activities - disco night was sad looking. A small strip of beach and chairs weren't too hard to find. We brought our own snorkel gear for shore snorkeling. Saw some fish, but not much. Also, we were lured with the time share tour (1.5 hours) with a promise of a VIP level breakfast and a snorkel excursion for 6 for $140. I knew it was a bad idea, but frankly, I was so bored and eager for a special breakfast since my husband and I are early risers anyways. It.was.awful. Arrived at 8:30am sharp for our lovely VIP breakfast and they were not open. Took us instead to the breakfast buffet. I had coffee and my husband took a couple of bites of his scrambled eggs. [insert vomit emoji] The timeshare presenter lady became condescending when she couldn't continue twisting our words. What an awful job to have so I bit my tongue and finally we resolved to just saying no thank you, no thank you to move things along. On the bright side, the tour they arranged was with Alberto's Water Sports. They were awesome! We snorkeled Palancar, Columbia?, some other area and El Cielito. Saw turtles, baby shark, tons of fish, barracuda and stingrays. They provided chips, fresh ceviche, beers and cold sodas and water. They were very helpful and fun and we would have been happy to pay the full $360, but feel a little better knowing all the money wasted on the "Royal" level at least got us Alberto's snorkeling excursion. Misc: Semi-private van for the 6 of us was $60. Buy tickets just before you exit the airport. We squeezed in. On our departure, the hotel bellboy was no where to be found, so we pushed our own luggage to the exit. Royal Concierge said it would cost us $25-30 since we needed a van, not a taxi. Authorized taxi showed up quickly, but said the fixed rate was $60 cash only. Luckily we had US dollars and he accepted that. Beer on tap at their lobby bar wasn't working. Hallway lights are dim; fountains broken, sidewalks dirty. Felt very worn and dated. Beach and pool was nice but go somewhere else.

Unbelievable. My parents, my kids, a special vacation, a splurge for the holidays. We arrived today. We made sure to pay extra for royal level. We have been told we can have dinner at the buffet or room service for the next two nights because everything is booked. Make no mistake. Royal and the grand are over rated. They trick you into coming here, say there are also carte restaurants and then BUFFET OR ROOM SERVICE IUR FIRST TWO NIGHTS. It’s Ike they want you to have to leave and eat elsewhere.!super disappointing.

Been going for 14 years in a row for the exceptional service at the Royal Club. The restaurant staff, Tomas, Rogelio, Lupe, and Carlos have always treated me like royalty. The ladies at the receptionist lobby at the Royal club, Cecilia, Odalys, Sammy, and Mayra were so helpful throughout the week. Will be returning next year for sure. Thanks again Royal club! Great spot for families, couples, and friends. Spectacular quality preparation of the food daily and nightly. Thanks!
