So many issues... We booked 3 rooms at Royal Level. The reception staff checked us into buildings that they knew had NO AC (Building 20 and 21)! As we had folks in our group with health issues, we requested that we all be relocated to buildings with AC. I was persistent (based on what I had heard from other guests) that we be moved straight away. We were placed in Buildings 10,11, and 18. The room in Building 11 was fine; however, the room in Building 10 had no AC, no Wi-Fi, no TV, and the bathroom was filthy while the room in Building 18 had no AC. The Wi-Fi, the TV, and the bathroom were all fixed, but the AC in Building 10 and 18 never got below 80 degrees, despite frequent visits to the Royal Level reception. The water desalination system was obviously not working at all during our stay. Showering felt like bathing in ocean water, ice was salty and EVERY single person in our party became violently ill during our stay, despite the fact that we never ventured away from the resort. Needless to say, the infrastructure at the Occidental Cozumel is in dire need of an overhaul for the health and safety of their guests. In addition, do not look at the pictures Barcelo has posted on the website for the Occidental Cozumel in terms of the beach. The beach is relatively nonexistent due to a storm that rolled through in 2020. This was our 3rd visit to the Occidental Cozumel and we will NEVER return! We only stayed 3 nights (3 nights too many) and have never been so happy for the end of a trip!

We arrived late Sunday night, March 12th, and by Tuesday our entire group began to get sick. Our group spent most of our vacation in rooms very ill at different intervals. We were able to go to the beach together Saturday, our last day. We had one in our party require on site medical attention. Two other have sought medical attention upon returning home. The resort is clearly having major issues. They are currently denying any responsibility or wrongdoing. The only saving grace at this hotel are the staff. They are so helpful, kind and try so hard. Facilities Rooms are adequate and clean. Pool is dirty and we didn’t swim in it, once. Grounds, not cleaned regularly and garbage is left on the ground and around garbage cans. Mexican raccoons (coatis) jumping on tables outside while guest are eating. Bars- Bartenders and servers are fantastic and they do a great job with the quality and service of drinks. Victor at pool bar amazing! Entertainment staff are great. Zoleimc is an amazing beach server. Restaurants - food choices are limited but okay. A La Cartes(when we were not sick) are good. Service is good. Witnessed hand washing of cups at the bar. Not being sanitized via dishwasher at appropriate temperatures. Tables are wiped with water. Placemats are not changed between guests. There is not enough hand sanitizer anywhere including bars and restaurants. ******Beach - when chairs are broken they are not removed. Beach is dirty and not raked. Not enough shaded options. Beach is NOT as advertised. It has suffered hurricane damage(three years ago!) and is not like any of the pictures. This a complete form of bait and switch. The water is so cloudy you can not see your hand in front of your body while swimming. Forget snorkelling anywhere near this resort. Do not go to this resort.

DO NOT STAY HERE we booked 10 nights for a scuba trip and had one disaster after another. The second day here at least half the hotel came down with what we believe was Norovirus. We spent two days in misery and a $500 doctor bill for IV fluids, antibiotics anti diarrheal and stomach cramp meds. The hotel pretty much just pretended nothing was going on while everyone you saw said they had been horribly ill. 2 days with no AC, the room was over 80 Today the entire “resort” has had no running water for the last 5 hours.. Want to clean up after diving or laying in the sun all day? The only option Is the swimming pool. The food hasn’t been horrible (other than the likely source of our disease) but horribly repetitive after a few days you’ll be very tired of the same offerings. There are some good features. The grounds are well kept and generally it’s been quiet and relaxing. I can’t imagine ever coming g back here. The highest complaint is that the hotel just acts like there’s no problem. No apologies. No concern.

We arrived on the 18th Saturday, to celebrate our birthdays. everything was fine until my husband got a severe diarrhea this morning Monday the 20th. We had dinner at the Italian restaurant last night for his bday. He had steak medium, and salad bar( mushrooms and green pepper) . I had shrimp risotto, cheese and prosciutto from the salad bar, had water and red wine. I am not sick at least not yet . I normally eat foods that are fully cooked and fresh fruits. I feel sorry for my husband, we are going to move our snorkeling tomorrow as he is so sick. Tip: Be careful of what you’re eating, eat fully cooked foods. It could be supply chain that’s causing all this illness. This has been going on for few days now but I feel like nothing is being done. We will try another resort next year! 3 stars for all the hardworking team members at the dining areas.

We arrived Tuesday afternoon March 14th. We had three rooms for six of us. Reservations were made under my husband’s name, Leif Anderson. We were told upon checking into the Royal Club that there were no reservations available for any of the restaurants for the first two nights of our stay including that evening but we could get pizza starting at 9:45 PM. We could not even get into the Royal Club restaurant. What is the point of the Royal Club level? We later found out we could have gone to the main buffet had we known it was an option. Not a good look that you don’t reserve space of have space for your club level. We were never told but quickly realized we had no air conditioning in our three rooms and quickly reported it with in two hours of arriving. We later found out two buildings had no air conditioning that should have been communicated. We asked for other rooms and were told none were available. We asked to speak with a manager and were told none were available and we would have to go to the front desk the next morning. We asked extra fans and a bucket of ice and were told none were available. For dinner that night, we thought our only option was room service. When we hit the room service button on the phones we got nothing but a busy signal. We reported the issue to the Royal club office. We went to the Royal Club office to order our meals later that evening as our phones were still not working. The next morning (Wednesday) we went to the front desk to speak to a manager and we’re told none was available. I left my business card and our room numbers and was told I would be contacted. I never got an email, a text or even a phone call. Wednesday night three of us (myself and two others became very ill and were unable to even leave the rooms). Thursday, we are sick all day, no air conditioning, rooms have hit 27 degrees celsius, and still no word from management and phones buttons are still not working. By Thursday night the rest of our party has become ill. Friday night I was able to go to the front desk and was finally able to reach a manger on duty who actually sort of tried to help. She was able to find one room that had air conditioning and one room that we could have for one night then would have to move again and one room that still had not air conditioning but she said was “fresher”. I ask to be moved to another hotel and was told she was not empowered to authorize it. Everytime I tried to find the GM or get his name I was told I couldn't.

We thought the grounds were beautiful. The staff was amazing, especially Axil, Emalie and Jesus that were at the pool activities each day. And Guadalupe in La Carreta, the royal restaurant. Unfortunately , all of the reviews about illness proved to be true for us. We were there 3/3-3/10. We took 2 pepto every day, I didn’t drink water, used bottled for brushing teeth, I didn’t eat seafood, salad, fruits, vegetables. I purelled after touching buffet utensils and used Purell after touching anything. And I got soooooo sick. It was awful. I spent about 18 hours between the bathroom and the bed, then did venture out to sit at pool, but still felt icky and couldn’t eat for almost a week. My husband ate more than I did at the buffet and a la cart places, and he got it 2 days after me. I tried so hard to take precautions and still ended up sick. Such a bummer because we did like the grounds and the staff were all super nice. I let them know at the royal office when checking out and they wrote it down in a notebook and said someone would email me but so far, nothing. Fortunately we were in royal level so we could get room service and got some saltines and toast. We took Cipro and Zofran with us but couldn’t even keep that down. It was so frustrating because we read a bunch of posts saying this but we thought we would be fine if we were careful. It was our first time to Mexico and while we lived Cozumel, I wouldn’t stay at Occidental again. The current posts seem like even more people are sick.

We booked a king room but we’re out in a room with 2 full size beds. Food is not very good and 11 out of the 13 that went sick got violently ill with diarrhea and vomiting. Each day the cleaning staff would make the bed, but they never restocked the coffee supplies

Our group of friends (12) all got extremely sick on our latest trip to occidental Cozumel. We all got a bacterial infection from what is likely to be the good or water. We all had diarrhea and vomiting for 2 full days. Made for a bad trip.
