The Sands used to be a tremendous value, but changes occasioned by the recession in 2009 and COVID as well as the recent affiliation with Holiday Inn, have changed all of that. Lines for the single restaurant onsite have grown to be ridiculous and prices have escalated greatly (along with weakening dollar against the peso). Units are dated, particularly the bathrooms, but staff are wonderful and the units and grounds are well maintained.

Hotel's Favorite
We've been coming to The Royal Sands for years using the all-inclusive package. The rooms are nice and all have balconies with views of the ocean. The place is always clean, the staff courteous and solicitous. The food at La Veranda buffet is very good and there are always many choices. A shout out to Javier Gomez for his special efforts to make us feel welcome. This year however there were a couple of issues that should be mentioned. First, is the sargassum problem on the beach. This issue has been well publicized and the Mexican government has tried various solutions but so far to no avail. This prickly, tangled seaweed is getting worse every year and this year it got so bad some days that no one could go in the ocean. It comes in waves so thick that it turns the turquoise waters dark greenish/black and is very unpleasant. The hotel had a machine rake sand over the seaweed that was deposited on the beach, so it would decompose, which is a good idea. But the machine can't go on the soft sand of the tidal zone, and each day at high tide, the seaweed in this zone was washed back into the ocean, to be redeposited the next tidal cycle. One idea the hotel should try is having some workers rake the sargassum during low tide, out of the tidal zone, so it doesn't wash back into the ocean. This would help a little. However, until the government finds a way to keep this stuff from reaching the shore, the great Cancun beach will become unusable more and more days. The second issue involves the all-inclusive dining options. One of the enticements of the all-inclusive package is the choice of several restaurants besides the La Veranda buffet. All-inclusive guests can call at 8 AM to reserve a spot at Conquistador, Captains Cove, Hacienda Sisal, and others, if they don't like a particular theme night at La Veranda. In prior years, including at full capacity before Covid, I'd call at 8 AM sharp, get an agent immediately, and reserve any restaurant I wanted. This year, I called at 8 AM and was put on hold for ten minutes, then told everything was booked. This happened day after day. I even tried going to the concierge at 8 AM to see if they had any better luck but they were put on hold too, then told everything was booked. I asked two concierges what was going on and they told me that Royal Resorts had a new rewards points program only for members, which allowed them to book up all the restaurants in advance, leaving nothing for the all-inclusive guests. If Royal Resorts wants to implement such a program, they are certainly within their rights to do so, especially since their time share members are their first priority. But they should let the all-inclusive guests know in advance that they will most likely be dining at La Veranda buffet every night, so as to avoid the frustration of not getting the promised dining choices. Hopefully by our next visit, these issues will be addressed.

Dear Andrew H, Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay at The Royal Sands. Sargassum arrivals are a natural occurrence, and during the past few years, we've seen unusual amounts of these algae coming ashore, which has become quite an operational challenge. We strive to clean in the early morning without affecting our guests, and we even clean twice a day to keep the beach in optimal conditions. While seaweed is a regular visitor, we cannot predict the date and time of its arrival. Royal Resorts is committed to providing our guests with a great experience, and we’ll continue working to maintain the beach as clean as possible. We sincerely apologize if you couldn't reserve with day in advance a spot at one of our restaurants. Our concierge team works hard to find availability for our non-member guests, but regretfully, it is not always possible to find a spot on the day and time desired by the guest. We regret that you felt this way about our concierge service and rest assured we have shared your comments with our Guest Relations Manager to find ways to improve this process for the benefit of our non-member guests. We will continue working to deliver a better experience on your next visit. We hope we have the chance to welcome you back soon. Warm regards.

Nice size villas, nice pools, food could be better. My family has been coming for 25 years and have loved coming all these years. I hope it only changes for the better with new ownership, but time will tell.

Everything was lovely. The rooms and gardens well maintained. Lovely pool area. Employees worked hard but being diabetic they had no special food and drink items. Only diet coke. I wanted to eat waffles in the all inclusive breakfast but they had no sugar free syrup until I talked to manager and they obtained a bottle on day4. I wanted to have some alcohol drinks but they don’t have sugar free tonic. Also no sugar free desserts on the huge display on dessert buffet. They are not set up for diabetics.

Very disappointed with the Royal Resorts purchase by HolidayInnClub.com. Many policy changes have reduced the value on non-member, all inclusive benefits. Off-site restaurants all inclusive benefits have been limited. Guests are constantly being bombarded with upsell recommendations. In hotel market prices have skyrocketed. Frozen Pizza was $20 USD, Name brand ice cream pint was $19 USD. We brought our entire family of 11 here in May, prior to the sale to Holiday Inn, and were very happy. My wife and I returned late November and were very disappointed. Will to return. I looked up Time Share Resales for Royal Sands All Suites Resort & Spas and found many one-week prices as low as $7,000 with annual maintenance costs currently at around $1,100 annually according to the sales offer. We did not pursue.

Dear Denverrez, We appreciate your feedback about your recent experience at The Royal Sands. At Royal Resorts, our guests are of the utmost importance and we continuously look for ways to improve their experience. However, we regret not meeting all your expectations on your recent visit. We understand your concerns and want to assure you that management does their best to keep our prices to a minimum. The increase is mainly due to the exchange rate and rising cost of services. All your observations are duly noted, and we have forwarded them to the proper departments, as they help us to identify areas for improvement. In our commitment to continuous improvement, we have sent you a private message via TripAdvisor to learn more details about your stay. We hope to welcome you back soon at your home away from home and deliver a better vacation experience. Warm regards,

My family of 5 came to Royal Sands and stayed in the 2 bedroom suite. There was plenty enough room for the 5 of us and the suites were very nice! We had a ground floor room (I would now never not get ground floor) it made it very convenient to go to and from the beach, pool, and room. We also were able to get drinks and food right on our patio as long as we flagged one of the waiters down. Beaches were very nice and clean. We are not huge drinkers however while on vacation I thought I’d like to get a mimosa with my breakfast….. nope! We were told no alcohol could be served until 11 am which would really turn out to be almost 11:30 by the time they were ready and taking orders. Also the beach/pool bar closes at 6 pm. If you want a drink/food after that your options were to go to a restaurant or order room service. They do have a sidelines bar but if you have teenagers like we do we we’re told no kids after 7 pm. For most of the week the beach and pool area service were very slow (most days we tipped around $30-40). The last 2 days we found Moises (beach/pool) and he was amazing!! Never once did I have to put my flag out and he made sure to check on us multiple times! He also remembered that we were leaving on our last day by a certain time and made sure to get us drinks/food before we left. Mario at La Veranda was super sweet and made sure to come and check on us and ask about our tours and when we were going home each time we seen him. He called me by my name every time I seen him! Wendy Torres was also very nice to work with on the All Inclusive rates after they went up by a large rate. I don’t know that I would go back again and I definitely do not think All Inclusive is worth it. It is a lot of money to be restricted on when you can get drinks, the food was ok at best (breakfast was always good) and it was confusing on what needed reservations and what did not.

Dear JB190324, Thank you immensely for taking the time to share your recent experience at The Royal Sands. We are thrilled to hear that your family enjoyed the spaciousness and comfort of our 2-bedroom suite, finding it accommodating for your needs. It's wonderful to know that the ground-floor room added convenience, granting easy access to the beach, pool, and your suite. We're delighted that you found our beaches well-maintained and the service on your patio satisfactory, allowing you to relish in the serene atmosphere. Your recognition of our dedicated team members: Moisés, Mario, and Wendy Torres, is truly appreciated. We are overjoyed that their personalized attention and genuine care contributed positively to your stay. It brings us immense pleasure to hear about the outstanding service they provided and how they made your experience memorable with their attentiveness and warmth. However, we are genuinely sorry for any inconvenience caused by the restrictions related to the timing of alcoholic drinks service, the limited operational hours of our beach/pool bar, and the confusion regarding reservations. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will be sure to address these concerns internally to enhance our guests' experiences. Your feedback will be instrumental in our efforts to refine our services, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Warm regards.

We spent a wonderful time at the resort. As usual the lap pool was great, and so was the beach volleyball. The resort is still kept very clean. The staff were very helpful, from the front desk to the housekeeping. The waiters at the Veranda made us feel very welcome. I don't remember all of their names, but Pablo, Fher come to mind. Mario Alvarez was so pleasant! We also had the pleasure to see Angel again at the Bistro. We're looking forward to return again.
