I have been in the hotel business for a long time , currently as a GM for a hotel on Cape Cod , MA . We decided to visit St.Croix for a 10 day vacation. We booked 2 nights at the Carambola Beach Resort to start our vacation. I did read the reviews and was a little skeptical of what the resort would be like . I must say we were pleasantly surprised and thrilled that we booked here . The ride from the airport via taxi was interesting and quite long, but we really enjoyed the sights of the rural areas . When we arrived at Carambola the front desk staff was welcoming, and friendly. They drove us to our room on a golf cart which was fine . Our room was nice , large , big bathroom, and porch . The room was clean and well equipped . We dropped our bags and walked to the restaurant for a bite to eat . The walk is not very long , but it is s little dark , we enjoyed the walk with ocean nearby we could here the waves and feel a nice breeze . We felt we were on a tropical island, very remote, beautiful beach , plenty of lounge chairs , nice views , friendly people and well kept grounds. This resort is perfect if you enjoy nature , relaxing and swimming. We had a very nice stay and we will definitely stay here again . C. Ladd

Hotel's Favorite
The resort is located very privately and secluded on the north side of the island, in itself that makes is heaven on earth to me! Entrance is gated with a guard on duty 24/7 to restrict entrance to guests and authorized parties (and currently is also doing temperature checks on everyone entering in accordance with Covid regulations). Due to its location a rental car is pretty much a must unless you are planning on just hanging out on the resort's beach or are willing to pay the $30 one way taxi fare to get into Christiansted or Frederiksted. Parking is free in the guest parking lot just across from the lobby and within easy, though slightly downward sloping (or upward on your way back to the car) walk on paved walkways that are easily navigated even with luggage or a stroller. It is set right on a wonderful sandy beach with just enough coral and a couple of tide pool areas to make it equally nice for sunseekers as those that like to snorkel and enjoy some sea life... the beach teams with crabs, the tide pools hold urchins, tiny fish and snails, the water teams with tropical fish such as tangs, damsels, angelfish and even stingrays. There are beach chairs available for use (beach towels available at the front desk) and a volleyball net set up for those that like to be a bit more active. And though all beaches on St. Croix are public this beach certainly at least felt private and probably doesn't get much outside traffic due to it's location. There is a hiking trail that leads from the resort up a steep hill through dense foliage (very pretty) to a rocky beach and a set of gorgeous tide pools to the west of the resort... well worth the hike! The 2-story buildings are spread out over beautiful and well maintained resort grounds, providing an open feel with a sense of privacy not often found. Our room was on the ground floor and the patio just steps off the beach... we kept the patio doors wide open day and night to let in the ocean breeze and the sound of the waves, truly exceptional! Inside it was clean and comfortably furnished including a king bed and a separate sitting area (both of which had a TV though other than watching the Bills play on Sunday we didn't turn either one on). There were 6 units in our building (3 ground level, 3 on 2nd floor) and they were so well insulated that we couldn't hear any other guests at all. Due to Covid restrictions housekeeping was reduced to Mondays and Thursdays but if needed fresh towels and/or supplies were available through the front desk. The pool and spa were sparkling clean and set right off the Beach Bar with a gorgeous view of the beach. There were plenty of lounge chairs as well as tables with chairs and umbrellas set around it to offer guests room to sunbathe or even work from their laptops via free WiFi. The Saman restaurant was unfortunately still closed due to renovation, however, a breakfast buffet was available daily and the Flamboyant Lounge & Beach Grill was open daily from 4-9pm. Though it was not a full up restaurant it offered sit down service with a selection of appetizers as well as pizza and a small selection of entrées. Food was good, staff friendly and accommodating giving off a warm island feel and working hard to keep customers satisfied. There was a full bar with a sufficient selection of beer as well as wine, and the mixed drinks were great (the Cruzan Confusion being my favorite). There are several really good/excellent restaurants within a 15 mile radius though a few were closed due to Covid... two are an absolute must for dinner, AMA at Cane Bay (about 2 miles from Carambola) which is right on the beach with the waves literally crashing at your feet) and Savant on a quiet street in Christiansted away from the hustle and bustle (about 12 miles from resort). Both offer an amazing atmosphere and excellent food (fine cuisine) with full bar and ample wine lists. Other great restaurants we tried were The Beach Cafe at Sandcastle, Louie & Nacho's (both on Dorsch Beach Frederiksted), Leatherback Landing (Cane Bay), and The Mill (Christiansted boardwalk)... food and drink as well as service was good at all of them! In conclusion, we were more than happy having chosen the Carambola Resort as our accommodation for our trip to St. Croix. It fit our bill to the T and exceeded our expectations. Is it for everyone? Certainly not if you expect to be in the middle of the action, crammed into a hotel bunker with rows upon rows of multi-level buildings and entertainment presented to you every moment of the day. But should you be like us and seek a tranquil, intimate retreat to just relax, take in the natural beauty of the island and make your own plans, to explore St. Croix as you wish... all at a very very reasonable price... then it doesn't get any better than this!!!

This picture while booking are amazing! Got to the hotel and the first room that they checked us into and it was a musty mildew smell. Furniture was very old. Checked into the second room had roaches and once again we had to move. Looked into a third room they had spider webs. Finally we went into the fourth room. It was better than the first three but bathroom was filthy. I couldn’t wait until my check out day. I’m Overall Mandy and Stevens were amazing. And housekeeping was slow. Took them hours just to bring us towels.

Property struggles with power going out on a routine basis. Nearly all of the shower faucet handles are installed backwards. Also, the rooms aren’t very clean, so you may see a roach or two. If you’re a Bonvoy member, you will not get points for your stay unless you submit for a missing stay afterwards.

My suite and stay was excellent. The room was a beautiful bungalow style. King size bed with a living room and kitchen. Not your typical Marriott. More of an outdoor style. It's directly on the beach and they have a pool and outdoor bar. The drinks were divine. The view is amazing. The water is warm. And the staff are friendly. I will be going back. People should arrive there with awareness that it's not your regular indoor Marriott. It's a whole different outdoor style. And the style has a great vibe. Come ready to have fun, be loud in the pool and on the beach and kind to the staff. I will say it took awhile to clean the room but they gave me free drinks while I waited. Thank you staff... Also, if you arrive Wednesday, come just a little before 5:30 managers reception. It'll last and hour and the booze will flow.

I am an ambassador elite with over 120 nights per year at Marriott properties and i’ve NEVER experienced such a neglected property as this one. The front desk associate was extremely nice and he really tried for over an hour to get us a taxi. I literally cried upon entry into the room when i realized the state of the room. It was con web filled, floors were dirty, couch appeared like it belong in garbage and this was meant to be an “upgrade” it was just Gross! We were coming from the Ritz in st.thomas huge mistake to switch but we figured we would island hop. Stay away at all cost in a desperate need of an upgrade and cleaning.

I was a bit nervous to book after reading all the reviews. Most of the negative reviews were regarding the actual resort itself being run down. I decided to book because the resort was taken over by the Marriott, so really, how bad could it be? It would have had to have been updated to some degree? Right? Well sad to say everything you read was true. It is an old resort. Our room was spacious and the mini kitchen had working appliances. The safe did not work, neither did the telephone. It wasn’t until the following day; did we realize that the phone needed to be plugged in. The patio was a nice feature to have. However, it was not screened in and there were too many mosquitoes to even entertain the thought of hanging out there. The cushions on the patio and on the couch could/should be replaced. The bed was very comfortable and the shower our room was updated. We did have towels, wash cloths and shampoo/conditioner/body wash. When we did arrive to the room however, outside was very muddy, the sandbags were broken. Needless to say, we had to step in the dirt then enter our room. No doormat was available to use. I wished that they would have cleaned up knowing that they were having guests stay there. The Staff was helpful and friendly from the moment we checked in. The Bar staff were awesome and had a smile each time we visited. Remembered who we were which is just what you like on vacation. The plantation punch was quite yummy. We had breakfast at the Saman. Note that it is a buffet service: eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt etc. as well as juices and coffee. The Chef made omelets to order. We sat on the patio listening to the sound of the waves breaking. The beach was quite rocky but if you walked over to the left, it became sandier. The water was a beautiful clear blue/green. I didn’t see a lot of beach chairs. They did have beach towels available for us to use. These looked well used LOL. There was a wash station for your body and feet as you came off the beach, but one of them didn’t work well. Lastly, the pool wasn’t open while we visited. I was a bit heartbroken because it is quite beautiful. They were do repairs from the last hurricane. Would I return, yes. I believe in writing real reviews but I also believe in being fair. Carambola isn’t on the caliber of the Buccaneer and will take some years to get there. We met some couples who were having a great time and to be honest so did we. The time we spent at the resort: the beach, the bar, the views, were made of memories. I guess this is why the reviews are so far left and right.

I checked in at this property yesterday (Sep 24-Sat). The reservation was/is for 4 people. Apparently the property is going through some renovations, but that can not be an excuse for the following. If the property can’t provide the basics to its guests then it should stay closed until the renovation work has completed. 1- There was NO mattress on the sofa bed. Now one may be able to understand no linens but having no mattress is just something else. After I told the front desk, an old / worn out mattress was sent which doesn’t even look clean. 2- When we lifted the blanket on the king bed, there was hair at multiple parts of the linen, similarly on pillows. Which means that linens were not changed. After another phone call to the front desk & an hour later, someone finally brought new linens, but didn’t know how to put them on. Apparently at 8pm there was no housekeeping available & the person who helped bring the linens was part of front desk. So my wife ended up changing all of the linens for the king bed as well as putting linens on the sofa bed. 3- With a reservation for 4 people, there were two bath towels in the bathroom & zero/no shampoo/soap/body wash. Two extra towels were brought, but we were told to wait for the shampoo & body wash the next morning when housekeeping is back. So we are still waiting to take that first shower ……

If you go here with high expectations thinking it is a typical Marriott property resort, you’re in for disappointment. The 5-star reviews must be fake or they’ve never stayed at a real 4-star resort, take time to read the detailed reviews. The Carambola has been on a steady decline for the past 5 years. It used to be beautiful, now it’s bug ridden, run down and over grown. There should be a note on the property website saying that this hotel is in a transition period. Management says that they are remodeling but I see no evidence yet. If I hadn’t been there for work, I wouldn’t have even unpacked my bags.. it’s dirty. Actually, don’t unpack your bags either way, keep them zipped tight, or you’ll end up with bugs throughout your suitcase. Definitely check your bed for bugs before sleeping in it. If you are lucky enough to have hot shower, watch out, the water is over chlorinated and you may end up with a rash. The pool is cloudy green and not maintained or cleaned daily. The pictures that are posted are not from recently.. they are very misleading. It’s unfortunate because I’ve seen how great this hotel can be, and now the only positive is the view/beach. Even the beach used to be cleaned daily, and now the property doesn’t have a ground crew to keep up with everything. The bar and grill have a very accommodating staff but that doesn’t make this a 4-Star Marriott property. Try somewhere else on the island until they can get it back together. Or be prepared for a modified camping trip at this Motel 6 with a view.
