I must admit, I was very disappointed when I saw our room. However, the biggest issue that I had with our suite was corrected by Frances (sp?). I won't go into details, but just know that once made aware, the staff handled the situation. FYI, the staff here is trying their best to accommodate guests, so just be patient with them. Our room was definitely outdated & although the refrigerator wasn't aesthetically pleasing, it worked. The grounds are beautiful and the breakfast was good. As far as lunch and dinner goes, you will need a car to drive about 6 mins aways to some decent restaurants. The resort has a very limited menu which is basically bar type food. There are cats galore on the grounds, but they don't really bother you. The beach was cool, but there aren't any umbrellas. You do have an umbrella in your room, if you want to try and use that. It's almost like Marriott forgot about this location. This place could be 4 stars, but it needs some major work and a hiring event. A lot of the balconies do not have screens up which is a problem if your room is on the 1st floor. You may have a cat or 2 that wants to join you. You can also still see hurricane damage on some of the buildings. You also have to drag your luggage from the parking lot to your room. We were lucky as our room was near the parking lot. But, I saw a lot of folks struggling. I would've gave this location 2 stars, but the spirit of the staff is what is keeping this resort from hitting rock bottom.

Hotel's Favorite
The resort is located very privately and secluded on the north side of the island, in itself that makes is heaven on earth to me! Entrance is gated with a guard on duty 24/7 to restrict entrance to guests and authorized parties (and currently is also doing temperature checks on everyone entering in accordance with Covid regulations). Due to its location a rental car is pretty much a must unless you are planning on just hanging out on the resort's beach or are willing to pay the $30 one way taxi fare to get into Christiansted or Frederiksted. Parking is free in the guest parking lot just across from the lobby and within easy, though slightly downward sloping (or upward on your way back to the car) walk on paved walkways that are easily navigated even with luggage or a stroller. It is set right on a wonderful sandy beach with just enough coral and a couple of tide pool areas to make it equally nice for sunseekers as those that like to snorkel and enjoy some sea life... the beach teams with crabs, the tide pools hold urchins, tiny fish and snails, the water teams with tropical fish such as tangs, damsels, angelfish and even stingrays. There are beach chairs available for use (beach towels available at the front desk) and a volleyball net set up for those that like to be a bit more active. And though all beaches on St. Croix are public this beach certainly at least felt private and probably doesn't get much outside traffic due to it's location. There is a hiking trail that leads from the resort up a steep hill through dense foliage (very pretty) to a rocky beach and a set of gorgeous tide pools to the west of the resort... well worth the hike! The 2-story buildings are spread out over beautiful and well maintained resort grounds, providing an open feel with a sense of privacy not often found. Our room was on the ground floor and the patio just steps off the beach... we kept the patio doors wide open day and night to let in the ocean breeze and the sound of the waves, truly exceptional! Inside it was clean and comfortably furnished including a king bed and a separate sitting area (both of which had a TV though other than watching the Bills play on Sunday we didn't turn either one on). There were 6 units in our building (3 ground level, 3 on 2nd floor) and they were so well insulated that we couldn't hear any other guests at all. Due to Covid restrictions housekeeping was reduced to Mondays and Thursdays but if needed fresh towels and/or supplies were available through the front desk. The pool and spa were sparkling clean and set right off the Beach Bar with a gorgeous view of the beach. There were plenty of lounge chairs as well as tables with chairs and umbrellas set around it to offer guests room to sunbathe or even work from their laptops via free WiFi. The Saman restaurant was unfortunately still closed due to renovation, however, a breakfast buffet was available daily and the Flamboyant Lounge & Beach Grill was open daily from 4-9pm. Though it was not a full up restaurant it offered sit down service with a selection of appetizers as well as pizza and a small selection of entrées. Food was good, staff friendly and accommodating giving off a warm island feel and working hard to keep customers satisfied. There was a full bar with a sufficient selection of beer as well as wine, and the mixed drinks were great (the Cruzan Confusion being my favorite). There are several really good/excellent restaurants within a 15 mile radius though a few were closed due to Covid... two are an absolute must for dinner, AMA at Cane Bay (about 2 miles from Carambola) which is right on the beach with the waves literally crashing at your feet) and Savant on a quiet street in Christiansted away from the hustle and bustle (about 12 miles from resort). Both offer an amazing atmosphere and excellent food (fine cuisine) with full bar and ample wine lists. Other great restaurants we tried were The Beach Cafe at Sandcastle, Louie & Nacho's (both on Dorsch Beach Frederiksted), Leatherback Landing (Cane Bay), and The Mill (Christiansted boardwalk)... food and drink as well as service was good at all of them! In conclusion, we were more than happy having chosen the Carambola Resort as our accommodation for our trip to St. Croix. It fit our bill to the T and exceeded our expectations. Is it for everyone? Certainly not if you expect to be in the middle of the action, crammed into a hotel bunker with rows upon rows of multi-level buildings and entertainment presented to you every moment of the day. But should you be like us and seek a tranquil, intimate retreat to just relax, take in the natural beauty of the island and make your own plans, to explore St. Croix as you wish... all at a very very reasonable price... then it doesn't get any better than this!!!

Arrive with Island Time in mind. The resort’s lush tropical flora & fauna is beyond amazing. We are in a beachfront suite located furthest from the resort’s lobby (to the left) - it’s so beautiful; peaceful & quiet. Our suite has a small fridge; microwave; sink; 2 burner ele cooktop but no utensils (at all). Tap water is not pleasant, couldn’t drink it! We arrived yesterday (Sat, 6.12.21) and drove to the St Croix market for supplies (cases & cases of water); beer; cold cuts; napkins & basic treats (they have liquor there too). A rental car is highly recommended if you are staying here but driving is on opposite side of US roads. Roads are decent (unlike Jamaica’s roads) but slow & steady to avoid occasional potholes. I am still rehabbing from knee surgeries and am using a cane, request 1st floor unit if you have physical challenges. The resort is widespread so lots of walking involved. Yes they are short staffed but friends humanity is slowing awakening from this awful pandemic and the islands have been hit extraordinarily hard since they were on the heels of recovering from two back to back hurricanes. The staff is very kind & friendly, please be patient & don’t arrive with expectations beyond what can be provided in light of the current conditions. I’m sitting on our outside balcony overlooking the ocean & palm trees and enjoying this Marvelous breeze - this is heaven on earth, let’s enjoy what God has given us.

The customer service is bad at this location. Only one person was nice. No shampoo, no water, uncomfortable bed. The location is far away from everything. Cabs are expensive. The beach is amazing though. The landing beach bar food was better than at the hotel.

This place is better than the reviews would lead you to believe. The finishes are not updated and have some wear, but the rooms are big, clean, and well-appointed. No bugs or dust or evidence of past guests. The rooms are more like suites than regular hotel rooms. There is a kitchenette, a really roomy master-style bathroom and a walk-in closet. There is also a balcony/patio with ocean views. I think you will be unhappy here if you are not prepared and have unrealistic expectations. The area the resort is in is extremely quiet and scenic compared to Frederiksted or Christiansted. That means you are not walkable to restaurants or activities. You will need to have a rental car and drive to get to those things. Personally, I like it that way. You have beautiful views of undeveloped nature and you aren’t woken up by traffic noise or crowing chickens. Cane Bay is barely 5 minutes away by car and there are several restaurants there on the waterfront at different price points, as well as a dive shop and one of the best beaches on the island. You can also hike to the tide pools from the resort grounds, and Mt. Eagle (highest point on the island, another scenic hike) is less than 10 minutes away.

Hello Dbp47, Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback! I am very happy to read that you thoroughly enjoyed the size of our room, balcony, location, seclusion, best beach and endless ocean views. There are definitely lots of activities to keep our guests occupied on the island, as you mentioned diving and hiking are 2 of the most popular ones. Guests can also indulge in kayaking, sailing to Buck Island, and ziplining. Various dining options are also available to temp the palate. I would be delighted to welcome you back as I am sure there are some things you did not have the chance to discover. Thank you again! Warm Regards, Gerardo
