We had an amazing stay at Secrets Royal Beach. The grounds are beautiful, the food and the service in the restaurants and bars was great and we had fun with Gasolina and the ETeam. We will definitely be back.

I am still at the Secrets Royal for another 8 days. Here is my review after 6 days here alone. On the positive side: - The staff is incredibly welcoming and super generous. There is so much staff that you will rarely wait long for service and they're all extremely attentive to your needs. I'm pretty sure their training emphasizes the fact that the client is the boss, because the amount of staff that have told me that I'm the boss is astonishing. - As mentioned previously the staff is amazing, but their are also very forthcoming and offer bonuses without them being requested (i.e. fresh fruit platter in my room while I was working, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine, above and beyond mini-fridge refill) - The contemporary look and feel of the hotel is very nice. I didn't want to be in a place overly "kitch" and was very happy by the overall aesthetics of the place. The room is very clean and modern. I felt at home (more on that later) and this felt like a 5 star resort. - The food options are quite enjoyable and the quality of the food is really refreshing. The breakfast buffet has nice options for every taste (I personally go for the fresh fruits and omelette every day), the lunch has 2 options, buffet or beach grill, to be honest the buffet is underwhelming for lunch but the beach grill over delivers. For dinner you have 5 options of restaurants and most of them have really good food (once you realize and accept the fact that you are not in Canada or the US). The staff is amazing and the service is beyond reproach (Sometimes though they are so quick on the wine refill that you are not sure if they really enjoy their job or if they want to see you drunk as a duck...) - Again, the staff is always so friendly and welcoming. Upon arrival, everyone said "welcome home" during my check-in which was very refreshing. No one is pushy (except maybe the entertainment staff, but I believe that is normal and to be expected) Now for the more constructive criticism. I would not necessarily say that these are negative aspects of my experience, but definitely things that could be improved by the management: - I had an amazing room on the first floor with a private pool and king sized bed. I found it strange though that when I wanted ice, I had to go up a floor. To my amazement, the ice machine on that floor was broken every day. So I had to go up to the 4th floor to get my ice. This is not a deal breaker, but definitely annoying when your goal is to relax and enjoy yourself. - The art in the room is made of plastic... again not a deal breaker, but not necessarily impressive either... - In the bathroom of my room, there is a scall, but unfortunately the batteries are dead and I cannot use it. Nice to have in a room, but would be best if it worked. - Specifically in my room, the shower and sink drain were loose... Basically they moved all over the place, again not a major problem, but still inconvenient. - Again, in the shower there is a rain function and a handle function, in my specific shower the handle function does not seem to work which is kind of annoying when you have soap on areas of your body that the rain shower doesn't necessarily reach properly. - This issue is a big one for me. As mentioned previously I had a private pool with a patio door, which is really nice. But once I would get outside, there was no handle to open the patio door to get back in... Which in itself is not a major problem, but I think should definitely be corrected in order for people to enjoy their private pool more. - Again in the room, the amount of outlets is limited but I can still work with it, but near my desk outlets there are 2 USB outlets, which are basically black holes... nothing can be connected to them as there is nothing on the other side. Again not a major problem, but a slight inconvenience. - Now this is not something that the hotel per say can control, but to be honest, the amount of seaweed in the sea is staggering... They even have seaweed nets to prevent them from reaching the shore and still you have to walk through 4-5ft of seaweed just to get into the water... I understand that this is not something the hotel can control, but I must say it is something I wish I knew beforehand. - Regarding my experience. I have booked a 2 week getaway during which they offered a complimentary "out of office package" which included better wifi, laundry service, spa, yoga and fitness access and upgraded room... This being said the wifi is amazing in my room as I was able to work and do meetings without any issue. The laundry service is another ball game as I had to inquire with the reception how to use it and they had no idea what I was talking about (24h later the finally had an answer that the laundry service was free for me), the yoga and fitness center are free for everyone, so not really a benefit to my 14 day trip.... The spa service, I don't really get any added benefit as I still need to pay full price to use it. But the coup de grace was the complimentary room upgrade which never happened, because (from what they told me) I already had the best room of my category, which is a king bed with a private pool. To be fair, I understand that this is the best option for my category, but then either give me the lower of the next category or give me a freebie, anything to be honest would have been better than "well you have the best room so we can't upgrade you... Finally, I must add that the service at the pools and beach really varies depending on which area you are in. If you are in the main pool (loud pool), service is quite fast, if you are at the beach or the quiet pool, then be ready to wait, there is no staff and service can take upwards of an hour. - Also, one last thing, I get that this is a resort and that you should bring everything with you because they will charge you a lot on the spot, but let's be fair, 52$USD for sunscreen is a ripoff... Anyway, to give my honest opinion, this is a great hotel/resort. If you are extremely analytical, as I am, you might not overlook the aforementioned things above. But the service is amazing and I would probably come back again!a

Background: I have been to 5 Secrets resorts, but this is my first time in the Dominican Republic. This trip was to celebrate my 2nd anniversary. We spent 6 days and 5 nights on the property. This is my full experience: 1. The room was not as expected. I have stayed at many of Secrets’ resorts, and I always book the same type of room. I did not know the layout of this resort did not have a true walkout to the private lazy River. I hurt my ankle trying to leave my patio and walk over rocks to enter it. It was instantly disappointing. 2. All of the bars pretty much close at 6 which is strange, but the ShowTime is open late. We stood at the bar for about 4 mins our first night, watching the staff talk and laugh with each other before anyone acknowledged our presence. They then gave an attitude as if asking for a beverage annoyed them. We avoided this bar for the rest of the trip, going to the preferred bar at check-in. Very inconvenient walk from our room but better than bad service. There aren’t any dance options here because they closed the lounge due to COVID, but the Casino, all restaurants, beach loungers, and others are open. 3. We booked an excursion telling the Sea Pro woman representative we only wanted to snorkel. Even after reiterating it many times and confirming the day of, we realized she still booked us for a speedboat tour and charged us for it, purposely misleading us. Trying to make the most of it, we hesitantly went. In the speedboat, the tour guide constantly, uncomfortably, and ONLY TOOK PICS AND VIDEOS OF ME. My spouse may have been in 2. Then seeing the pics we could purchase, it was only a small collection of the many ones he continued to take. A fellow boat goer even informed me that he was filming me getting off the boat while my back was turned. We were so uncomfortable my spouse had to demand he take no more pics of me with his camera. We ended up docking the boat and WALKING back to our resort from the natural pool area discontinuing the excursion. A total waste of money. AVOID THE SPEED BOAT SNORKEL. 4. Our butler (Rafael) was very absent most of the trip, and when asked for things, did not deliver….. for example, we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary. We got a happy birthday banner on our door on day 3 and only after me asking what happened to our banner and cake. As we ate lunch, he walked up and gave us a bottle of rum we already possessed in our room. Useless to us and interrupting our meal. We then came back to see HAPPY BIRTHDAY rose pedals and cake with my name. I was so embarrassed and my spouse was uncomfortable. After informing the butler of the huge mistake, he made excuses, argued I’m celebrating my birthday as well, and created a bigger issue. I asked that he NOT try to fix it as the damage had already been done. We put a red sign on the door to ensure no one entered, but he did it anyway to change the rose pedals and cake to anniversary against my wishes. However, even after that adjustment, the door still said HAPPY BIRTHDAY and he provided chocolate treats AFTER being told multiple times I can't eat chocolate. He forgot to book our agreed dinner reservation because I checked the morning of, and then had to remind him in person. We were penciled in and able to attend dinner but even that was disappointing. Our promised romantic dinner on the beach to make up for this inconvenience was redone due to the weather. He then arranged for rose petals to be on the table of the restaurant instead. (Rose pedals do not solve problems) Funny thing is, after getting to the seafood restaurant, we see the special table…. A waiter comes up and says “Happy Birthday!” That means he didn’t even bother to inform them of the change. After I spoke with management regarding my displeasure, I then was forced to listen to him beg me not to speak about my experience because negative consequences could come on him and he has children. There was no desire to truly find a resolve, just a desire to save himself to the point of following us around begging to talk. 5. We did the presentation with unlimited vacations because we were ready to purchase a membership. As stated Secrets resorts are a fan favorite for us and we desired the membership. We planned to visit Costa Rica next year. The saleswoman ONLY discussed the residence program neglecting any other options. My spouse felt insulted. We no longer desired membership and he no longer desires to visit your property in Costa Rica or any others because of this. We spent our money to be treated poorly here, our anniversary ruined. Overall this trip made me cry multiple times, upset my spouse, and fell below expectations when compared to previous trips. I do not want to only say bad things, there were some highlights. Ezekiel in the preferred bar in the lobby is amazingly kind and welcoming. Adorys at Olio went out of her way to give us great service more than once. The French Restaurant is everything and you must also ask for the manager Rod at Seagrill. Runners adventures (Edy) tried his best to make the city tour memorable, which it was. The shows at 9 were energetic and fun. However, we left with a nasty taste in our mouths for this place and will be filing a formal complaint with corporate for compensation. It is too expensive for this service. I never got to celebrate my 1st anniversary due to Covid, and they ruined my second. I guess 3rd time is the charm. I have reached out to a manager at Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana Preferred section, but instead of replying to me or seeing what can be done, the manager sent the asst manager to make me a bogus offer of two free nights back there. Even after denying the offer, there has been no follow-up by anyone. I live in California, why would I ever want to go back there and pay the airfare for this service? In addition, I tried to contact someone at AMResorts Collection and just got hung up on and put into a loop more than once. I am going to move to the BBB and see what can be done then.

Property is beautiful and the staff were fantastic and so fun! The food options had a wide variety and I enjoyed trying all their was too offer. Special shout-out to Angel at the pool bar and Yoyo from the activities. We had a blast playing beach volleyball. We were happy to have upgraded to the King Suite with the ocean view and appreciated the Honeymoon sign on our door upon check in! Definitely would recommend and plan to come back!
